@@aboutashow I think there was likely a certain amount of complacency at the root of the issue. Kate may have been deeply unhappy with it, but she likely at the time thought that he was still a joke candidate, so why not go along with the joke for one episode to stroke the ego of a high-profile guest, and go back to lambasting him later. I've only seen a couple sketches from this episode (I, like many Americans, cannot stand to hear Trump's voice) and all of them have been absolutely devoid of comedy, or joy, or interest. Allowing Trump to host was a great disappointment and from both a political and comedic standpoint, the episode was a colossal failure. I expect the writers were told that they could not write anything outright critical of Trump and that the sketches were vetted heavily before rehearsal by his people, because I cannot imagine a single human being who would be proud to put their name on those scripts. The cue cards issues change depending on the sketch, some sketches are switched in at the last minute (usually after the noon dress rehearsal when test audiences see the show), so a really strong sketch that has had few rewrites over the week will usually do pretty well versus a sketch that was brought in at the last moment after a worse idea was struck.
I always felt bad for the actors and writers on that episode because you know they didn't want him there and that he was a nightmare who didn't get any of the jokes and is incapable of actually poking fun at himself. Give the SNL guys a break, they a re well trained improv actors, but everyone who worked with trump tells you its like a talking to a bag of cats on crack. Very hard to work with, you can be sure that Trump needed the cards and if he has to use them, everybody needs to use them.
They always stare out into the audience and at the cue cards, they never look at eachother naturally and perform like with the time with will Farrell performed and Chris Farley.
Chris Farley and Will Farrell would look a que cards everyone did, Chris was so nervous he would look to remember a line, unless it was a character he knew, alot of the cast are good in their own respective ways, but sometimes you need a que card to just remember where you're at, sketches are written at the beginning of the week and work on It form there, and with every actors different life styles it would be assumed not everyone would remember your lines, even Dana Carvey and Mike Myers read their cards once in a while, but one of the best for not reading their cards was Phil Hartman, he was a legend in his own right.
You probably weren't asking for realsies BUT just in case - the cue card reliance is supposed to be part of the "scrappy, last-minute appeal of the show" that Lorne Michaels champions for SNL. Could be misremembering. It has been a bit since I've watched the show or read up on its history (and I think the sketch you're talking about was the sketch I decided to stop watching the show on). Awesome video as always Leo!

I watched a different one of yours yesterday and took note of your then subscriber count (that being related to the topic of that video). Quite the phenomenal growth rate you’ve got going there, pal. Well deserved, too.
Just clarifying the reason they haven’t memorised line is because for a good chunk of dialogue of the show they are reading for the first time on the teleprompter. The writers often change chunks of the script from the one rehearsal to the live show. To keep it fresh and to throw the actors off.
The only writer I’ve heard of deliberately trying to throw a cast member off is John Mulaney for Stefon. Yeah I agree that the scripts change and get edited before the show hence the need for cue cards in the first place but the performers typically get a heads up about that happening.
Not defending what SNL did as I feel like I agree with you a lot here, but it is important to know that whoever is SNL's host has almost complete control over that weeks episode. Most hosts ignore this responsibility and let the cast and crew do their thing, but no person running for public office (and especially if their campaign manager had anything to say about it) would let that power slip through their fingers. It is also important to realize that "the pendulum swings both ways" in that while this episode purposefully portrayed Trump in a very positive light, there have been many others which favor democratic candidates, more often now than before the 2016 election. Don't confuse this comment as disliking your video, I cannot stress enough how much I've enjoyed your channel since I found you a week ago.

Give the SNL guys a break, they a re well trained improv actors, but everyone who worked with trump tells you its like a talking to a bag of cats on crack. Very hard to work with, you can be sure that Trump needed the cards and if he has to use them, everybody needs to use them.
Look at the old episodes of SNL and how they worked with the cue cards. Huge difference.

I am so enjoying this channel. first 2 (and a half) videos have been fantastic! Keep it upppppppp!!!
this made me mad and sad...like a lot of entainment it'll do the 'right' thing as long as its in line with profit

“i know it happens all the time but that’s my point” god damn ur just a straight talented writer.
I definitely wasn't sure where you were going at the beginning of the episode but I liked where you took me. Excellent job!
UA-cam finally did something right by recommending you to me :,)
Awesome video Leo, can't wait to see what else you have in mind now that it seems like you have a bit more freedom!
Simpsons hit and run music at the end??? I have whiplash from how quickly you took me back, man.
All the people in this sketch looks like they have guns to their head
I wish I could have had this conversation with my family a long time ago.
This is the most hilarious youtuber i found in a while, love you!
Leo referring to trump as a Cheeto isn’t original, but I just find his use of “dastardly” and “orange” so funny. 1 the delivery is pretty good, 2 dastardly is funny word, and 3 all Cheetos are orange
Man, and I thought I was caught up with all the Trump memes. Clearly not, because I missed all these sketches. Awesome video dude. Keep it up

Somehow I'd never known about this until now. This really sucks.
It’s nice that you take into account people like me who convert videos into audio files to find the funniest jokes. It really helps!
I just found this channel today (congrats on pleasing the blessed algorithm btw) and have already watched most of your videos and they are all amazing, but I think most of all I'm just happy that I have finally found someone that hates snl as much as I do.
Oh god, literally every moment of that snl episode shown was so painful...can't believe that happened
This did not age poorly...
I just recently found the channel & UA-cam is suggesting some of your older content. Good stuff. Thanks for sticking with it!
I expect a part 2, now that Elon Musk is gonna host. I’m expecting the exact same kind of energy with Musk.
Leo is the single trusted source of news in my life now
you are a cross between Chris Pratt and SirActionSlacks. This is a compliment.
I really wish both this and them recently ripping off a Joel Haver sketch would be the final nails in this shows coffin.
It's funny how all the people who gave him a platform and definitely helped him win the election turned to shitting on him every second they could
Even at that, they're not even trying
I dont need your videos but the manic energy genuinely counters mine so well that your videos make me productive.. like my adderall youre videos are addictive
Glad this popped up in my recommended, Great video man!
8:52 he's labeled as "tax guys", they may have accidentally made that part funny(or sad) in that it was shown later when his tax records were finally revealed that he hasn't paid taxes in years
Pretty sure Lorne Michaels makes them do the card reading thing.
Currently binging your videos after getting recommend the now you see me video. Great channel!
This aged well.
Awesome, well thought out and argued.
Great work, and I'm more excited than ever to see what you do next
Just found this channel tonight, glad I found it before it blows up cuz I'm positive it will
I watched a different one of yours yesterday and took note of your then subscriber count (that being related to the topic of that video). Quite the phenomenal growth rate you’ve got going there, pal. Well deserved, too.

My favorite new channel. Binge watching.
Love how you used the portal 2 grid transition
Leo with 6k subscribers yesterday. Leo with 9k subscribers today. It's time to buy buy buy, because Leo's stock is on the rise!
Why would they deliberately try and throw the cast off why would they actively try to make the show bad???
@@carysbebard3690 because it’s funny when they mess up

Low key your videos are fantastic. You deserve so much growth.
Everyone calls him orange but I've only ever heard me call trump "cheetoman" until now. Someone else has seen the Chesterness in his skin

If you put Simpson's Hit & Run music in your videos, you're gonna get a like.
I knew that sounded familiar lol
The actors of the older (70's, 80's, maybe 90's) episodes did NOT live off the cue cards. There's been a huge decline.
I can't believe I didn't know about this. I mean I don't watch SNL in general but i'm just surprised it hasn't come up before for me. Fantastic video.
SNL is no longer funny anymore. The guys who host weekend update are literally the only good part

Michael Che and Colin Jost are tbe only good part of SNL

@@TheVoidisEternal the act allows non violent offenders to get out early if they have good behavior and since there are bad drug problems in poor communities in general it does help black people quite alot and he also refunded the hbcu so the good things trump has done for the black community should not be overlooked.
