I used to have panic attacks created by nightmares that happened the minute I fell asleep so of course I wasn't able to sleep for many days in a row. It was beginning to cause hallucinations. During the day at work or when driving I realized that I could close one eye and not move that same side of my body at all for 10 minutes to get some relief. Then I would switch sides. After doing that a few times I felt better. I could feel the hallucinations and nightmares "unwinding" in my head, but they were unable to take over that way. Eventually I accidentally discovered that I could sleep peacefully as long as someone else was sleeping in the same room.

I thought they might include the news in the end, of possible war in Korea. Showing that while they are rid of the virus, this means that the usual problems will remain. But Isaac Asimov included this in some of his sci-fi novels: an alien form of life controlling the larger life forms on their planet, for total peace, where nothing ever develops because no one feels the need to compete. Life will never reach the stars, and won't survive in the distant future. He concluded that a world with the instinct for competition was better, even though it also leads to strife.

Honestly, I would say that one of the functions of this "virus," rather, bacterium, is to prevent a person's "fight or flight" system from kicking in, among other neurochemical receptors, given human beings experience emotion because of the neurochemicals our brains and bodies create.
However, the lack of sleep would doom humanity, as we can not go longer than three weeks without sleep. When that happens, we suffer psychotic breaks and we no longer recognize what is reality and what isn't.

Nah, not bacteria. It seems more like a fungus. Probably the closest on earth is Ophiocordyseps unilaterialis.
Cordyseps are able to mindcontrol insects. F.e. they make ants to climb up trees and stay there, high above the ground, until the fungus burst out of their bodies and can spread it's spores over a larger area. So for me, the mindcontrol thing looks more like a fungus 🤷‍♂️

Interesting that this similar scenario is just like the indie game “The Final station” Aliens, Gas to infect that make humans smarter and better while the weak turns into zombie like creatures , Kind of similar in some aspects especially considering that both of this topics and situations of their world is very unique so some of the similarity is quite intriguing

I had seen references to invasion of the body snatchers but like in that you could at least run and keep yourself somewhat safe as long as you don't sleep near a pod, but in this all they have to do spit in your face and it's over, cause you can only stay awake for so long
