I’m a driving instructor in nsw Australia and you’re pretty spot on with all of it. Learners here must complete a minimum 120hours which include 20 night hours. I have an additional income where I test senior drivers. Once reaching the age of 85 you’re required to take a test to keep your licence. I’ve been teaching for 26 years and testing for 10 and still love it. Everyone says it must be really stressful and you must have lots of patience, but no, the trick is, to keep your student in an area that is suitable to their ability, and all will go well.
Hi Richard, both my sister and I passed our tests today first time, and your videos helped a hell of a lot. Some visual learning worked great alongside all of the practical lessons we had with our own instructors. Thank you for having such a great channel!

That was a really good video, thanks. As a non-instructor I found it interesting that one of your downsides wasn’t the stress of having to constantly be alert in case your pupil randomly decides to accidentally try to kill you both. I’m glad this channel is doing so well for you. It’s well-deserved.
Thank you. It's quite safe although a disadvantage I forgot to include is that any claims on my driving instructor policy have to be declared on my personal policy even if I wasn't driving or even if I wasn't in the car and it was on test.
Just started teaching my niece to drive because her driving instructor doesn't take her anywhere that won't be on her test. I've just watched all your videos in one run and find them so helpful. This is what makes youtube great. People like you. Thank you very much.
Your comment about holidays is spot on and relevant to all self employed people. It's hard to justify taking time off when you always know that you're losing money doing so. Work/Life separation is so hard when self employed but it's critical you take the time for yourself.
I jsut wish there were more instructors like you where I live and I don''t even know you! Just goes to show how serious and well you approach your job if you can tell it from your videos alone, you have helped me immensely. I got my license this September thanks to your videos and I'm still learning from them at the moment!
I've been driving for 30 odd years, currently a bus driver training new drivers and, at the moment, teaching my 17 year old nephew (the reason for watching your videos). I've also taught my 4 children and another nephew, 3 passed first time and you're right to say it's a great feeling when they tell you. I thought about becoming an instructor years ago but never followed it up and too old now, but the joy of watching them go from driving up and down an empty car park with their hands glued to the steering wheel to being able to navigate a multi-lane roundabout is better than...well, a nice bowl of soup! So far everything in your videos, as far as I'm concerned, has been spot on. There's been a few "Aaahh" moments for me as well that's helped greatly...the "I was today years old when I found out" kind of thing. It's true what they say about everyday being a school day. What's your thought's on the Smith system, just in case you're not familiar with it, here it is. 1. Aim high in the steering. Average driver looks 3-5 seconds ahead, I get them to look at least 15 seconds ahead, or as far along the road as they can see. 2. Get the bigger picture. Look around, not just in front. Helps them see potential hazards and signs earlier, making use of their peripheral vision. I think it's this one that says to check your mirror every 5 t0 8 seconds, but for the average car driver I don't think it's that necessary. Check your mirrors at the obvious times M.S.M and when you feel like it needs checking, it doesn't hurt. I do use this for larger vehicles that don't have a Centre mirror though. 3. Keep your eyes moving. Don't focus on something for more than 2 seconds...Trust me, this one works! 4. Leave yourself an out. Surround yourself with space (more of a large vehicle thing, but still handy) 5. Make sure the see you. I encourage my 'pupils' to make eye contact with other road users who may be pulling out from a side road or a roundabout. Also use your horn, when appropriate, and your lights. F.Y.I. I have never used my horn because someone has cut me up...never! Anyway I'm ranting on a bit now, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on it though. Thanks again. By the way 8 hours, passed first time in the car and 2 weeks first time in a bus😎😎

Hey man! Been watching your videos for the past 2 months since starting to learn how to drive and I can gladly say that with the knowledge I’ve taken from your videos I passed today with only 5 minors!! Thanks for everything dude! Cheers
I used to be an instructor and was genuinely thinking about going back to it. You’ve just reminded me why I left it in the first place. A lot of work for very little reward. Great video btw & all the very best.

My instructor worked with me as a civil servant for many years before moving into driving instructor work. I got my licence yesterday and I just wanted to thank you for your help when my instructor wasn't as helpful. Your videos do make a diffrence so keep up the good work!
I just need to say I’m 20 minutes in watching this video, you made me laugh about the guy who followed you around the roundabout and stopped after you that smelt. Oh Richard, you are funny. I love following your channel.. I’m still doing my lessons, that’s how I come across your channel. Your great. Thank you 😊
I usually never speak in a lesson myself, but if my instructor starts a convo I will join in and have it. I also never cancelled a single lesson, in fact it was the complete opposite where my instructor had to cancel lessons and move them to another day.
Only recently discovered your channel and even though I have been driving for 41 years it’s fascinating to see how some techniques have changed and some are the same. It’s interesting you said it seemed that less lessons were taken in the 80’s and I can vouch for that. I was put in for my test after my first lesson, had 7 further lessons and then took my test and past first time 😀. Lessons only cost £7 back then too 👍
Example of how it goes here in Germany at the driving school where I got my license: Driving lesson from 10-11:30. Driving instructor picks you up wherever you are (within reason), you tell him in advance. Towards the end of the lesson we drive towards the location of the next student. Next lesson starts at 11:30. You stay in the car and get dropped off where you'd like. Next student does the same. 90 minutes lesson, they pick up the next student and get in the backseat and get dropped off. My driving instructor basically had back to back students per day. 5 in total for a total time of 7 1/2 hours, or 6 students for 9 hours which is the max they can do. 90 minutes cost 116 euros. My driving instructors car was a golf 7 or 8 with 300000. kilometers. You could cancel lessons up to 2 days in advance, otherwise you'd have to pay unless they got another student in.
You helped me a lot to pass my driving test. I m from Sri Lanka & we also drive on the right side. Your instructions helped me a lot. Thanks Mr. Richard
Hi Richard, I've just found you on YT and I'm just about to start my teaching (pink licence)... I've been binging your videos as you have such fantastic clear information videos, they have been fab to watch and pick up all sorts of helpful information, so basically just wanna say big thank you, you have no idea how helpful and confidence building you've been to watch.😊
I had my first CRASH with an instructor (wasnt my fault and got some payout). Passed my test after 40h. Now I am driving everyday to actually LEARN HOW TO DRIVE. Thank you for your videos. ❤
Fascinating channel to view. I have been driving since '95 and am now aware of some bad habits i got into over the years, thanks to me watching conquer Driving. Many thanks buddy, from a fellow UA-camr....
I recently started taking driving lessons, my driving instructor actually shared with me that he does apparently 6 sessions of 2 hours with his many students, and thanks to your reference, I've got newfound respect for my instructor, considering he works 6 days a week. Also your videos have actually helped me a lot! My instructor hasn't really explained what I should do in great detail and your videos have helped me to realise where I'm right/wrong! Thank you very much!!
VERY imformative and I have massive respect for people that can say so much info with next to none "emmm's or ahhhh's" Thanks for sharing these stats..
100% about the hours thing it took me ages to get test ready, but once i passed, i didnt have much issues, i value the time i spent learning and for those still learning once you pass, no one cares how long it took you to learn 👍
0:37 When I had my driving lessons (in the 1980s in the Netherlands, … yes, I know:), my instructor would pick me up with a pupil and we would drive her/him home and at the end of the lesson we would drive to the next pupil’s home. Very efficient. 23:52 I had only 18 lessons and passed the exam. That was quite fast (even back then) but I didn’t need to learn how to operate the car, I ‘just’ needed to learn how to move in traffic.
Hi Richard. Your videos are awesome. Thanks. I am just learning to drive, but should have done it years ago lol. I see we both love the colour blue. I too love having a laugh and having fun. Life is short and we have to make the most of it. Being in the present is good. Lol I too used to deliver papers a long time ago.
eminently likeable guy. enjoyed listening to you just talk about your life. nice to hear that you sound like a good person, re your thoughts on pupils who make nasty comments on passersby.
If someday I'm able to live in the UK, you will be the one that I will choose to be my Driver Instructor. By watching and learning your video lessons, your skills to teach are above and beyond. Nice video, thank you very much Richard for your lessons, you deserve all the success.
Dear Mr. Fanders, even though I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, this one trully compelled me to comment. You are by far the most genuine, honest and entertaining person in this niche of youtube and my personal go to channel in my free time. I'm a teenager from Croatia and I first found your channel when looking to get some additional advice when taking driving lessons. I passed without a fault and continued watching your videos with even more satisfaction. I agree with everything you've said because my instructor also told me about similar problems. Also, you're absolutley right about differing amount of lessons needed by different pupils-here in croatia the minimum is 35h and despite me being an allright driver at 35 mark, it took me until 45-50 h to really get confident and consistent behind the wheel. I must say, I've watched your videos so much that couple of times I found it confusing to switch back to driving on the right side in real life:)) Thank you so much for putting out such great content over the years and as helpful as your videos are while taking lessons, I've come to appreciate and follow your channel more closely after passing my exam as I'm sure driving is one of those skills you never quite master 100%, there's always something more to learn. I'm sending you cheers from Croatia and wish you all the best in the future!:))
I already have watched a lot of videos of your and it helped a lot. But after watching this video, you have now earned a subscriber. I respect you a lot.
Im currently doing my ADI training - Have my stage 1 on Wednesday and this videos given me the boost the push on through all of the training and mocks. Im also a similar age to yourself and coming from a job and carear that i'd settled into over the years and have taken the opportunity to retrain.
I use to be a taxi driver for 14 years, from the age 36-50, so I can testify to how I allowed it to affect my heart physical health. I will be 60 next year, I am considering this path, but will take steps to put my health first so I don’t suffer with metabolic syndrome again. Great video.
Thanks for the video mate, I passed my exam today in a completely different area! a lot of your videos helped me progress and simply keep my nerves cool, when I passed (first time) I sent my instructor £60 as a tip and I was wondering if maybe I didn’t need to do that, however your video put my mind to ease as I’ve had a few cancellations and some times of frustration when it seemed like I was a lost cause and my instructor stayed calm and got me to pass, all the best my friend keep up the great work!!
Took each of my hour long lessons on a Saturday at 17, in 1976/77. Much less theory, no separate theory exam, but I was an enthusiastic learner, had a very good instructor (BSM), MK2 Ford Escort, no PAS. 20 lessons, passed first time. You're correct, there is no "average", it's down to many variables, age, aptitude, ability to follow guidance, the instructor and perhaps a bit of luck with the traffic on the test itself. Like many, I love to drive today, as much as I did when I began 45 years previously.
past my test last friday and wanted to say thank you! your videos helped me a lot. im still going to watch your videos as im sure i can learn a lot more thanks.

Really appreciate your content, you have such a quirky and kind personality. This vid was very informative and interesting. Your personality and humour makes the vids so helpful and entertaining. You deserve everything, keep it up!! P❤️
Your UA-cam channel is doing great (current estimated yearly is 57K), even if you are in a holiday, as long as you have viewers then it all sorted :). Your videos are informative so I am a subscriber.
Hi Richard, you are keeping me Sane! We are teaching our twin daughters to drive ourselves 🙀😱🤯 as here in the far West of Cornwall we can not get an instructor. I've tried everyone but most do not have spaces on their list! They have tests booked in March. We are all watching your video hoping we have gained enough information to get them through 🙏 Looking forward to more videos I love the clutch control one really makes me 😃 Take care xx
Talking about members of the public that think they know the HC back to front, I was chased by a van while with a pupil. We were driving in fog and I'd had a chat with my pupil about the HC, fog lights and when to use at the start of the lesson. The van driver came out to lecture me about the fog lights. I took great pleasure in correcting him when he tried to suggest visibility should be less than 50m!
Hi Richard, Just stumbled across this video whilst thinking of a career change would love a video on the first year of going it alone etc. First student, first test pass and fail. Things to watch out for mistakes made in business etc? Love the videos I'll be getting through a few this week I think.
My instructor changed his certificate every 10 years. Well except 1 that got wrote off. I was lucky to drive the new replacement kia rio which replaced the wrote off kia rio. It had 8000 mile on the clock. 6 months later it 24,000 miles on the clock. I did 16 hours of lessons and 5000 miles in my mums corsa including a 200 mile trip out. And passed 1st time. But I'm a car bore. How many hours of lessons a pupil takes depends on a few things. 1. If they are a car enthusiast. 2. If their parents regularly drive (both mine do). 3. If they have practice under supervision.
I've been driving for +20 years in Sweden and I found your videos very interesting. Since I don't live in any of the big cities the driving here can be very different from the situation in your videos and I'm far from certain that I would pass a test in these conditions.
Loving the comment about the average time needed to learn to drive. Thank you for making me feel like it is normal to feel not anywhere near ready to drive after 15 lessons!
I had 10 years prior experience as a motorcyclist before passing a few months back, and even with all that experience and "road knowledge" i didn't feel wholey ready. but that experience is the ONLY reason i was able to pass at 15 lessons. So don't let it get you!
hey just wanted to let you know as an american who had been driving automatic for 10 years, your videos were instrumental in me being able to purchase and drive the manual car I now drive as a daily!
You're a funny guy and I imagine a very chill instructor. Started watching your content a while back as I have just started 'learning ' again after a 25 yr gap :/........ doing maneuvers in lesson 2 :D You can teach an old dog new tricks and it IS like learning a bike.
I like your honesty about the dislikes. My worst pupil came straight from work and he emptied dustbins for a living. I had to drive with my window open even in cold weather. I suppose I should have asked him to shower before the lesson but didn't have the nerve.
Although yu dont know there are thousands of people passing driving tests all around the world because of your videos sir.i am one of them from sri Lanka
You say about boring cars.....but an instructor not far from me has just changed his training car. He is now rocking around in a Peugeot RCZ with huge alloys, bright red calipers, duals and a roof box. The examiners were surprised with the choice of car, but said the all round visibility is actually pretty good. 🤣🤣Although he does do LGV and trailer training too.
That is an interesting car to teach in. I was tempted by a TT myself but rear seat space is also important and the high window line will make learning to manoeuvre harder.
@@ConquerDriving very true. Yes, he's unlikely to be able to accompany a pupil on test with that one, although the RCZ does have a better rear visibility than a TT. But then again, you've got the likes of Ashley Neal teaching in a 3 series, another slightly interesting choice of training car 😂.
You've clearly thought your business model though, very impressive. I worked in libraries and the NHS and agree about the dealing with the public thing -- it only takes one bad apple to spoil your day.
I passed last week first time at 33 🥳 I went from 0 experience to passing 4 months (don’t know how much hours) Your videos helped so much to break down anything I struggled with in lessons so thank you for everything, I have recommended your videos to anyone who asks 🚘
I passed my part 2 a few days ago. I’m taking the pink route & can’t wait to start teaching. Your videos are honestly helping me along my journey to be an ADI.
This was a really interesting video! Hearing about what is involved in being a driving instructor and the pros and cons of doing so. I could relate to some of what you said as I am an instructor and self-employed, but I teach Excel, Word and Outlook rather than gears, indicating and roundabouts. One significant difference between us, however... you were BORN in '87 and I passed my driving test in '87 (Hendon test centre)! On the subject of how many hours it takes to learn to drive, I live in Australia now and in my state, learners have to do 100 hours of supervised driving before they can take a test (if they are under 25). They get 3x credits for time with a qualified instructor for up to 30 hours (so 10 hours gives you 30 hours). They also have to do 10 hours between sunset and sunrise. For some I suppose this could be frustrating if they take to driving like a proverbial duck to water, but for most it's probably a good idea. Another thing that was nice about this video was your casual friendly demeanor throughout. Felt like we got to know you a little better!
My instructor spoke to me about considering becoming an instructor myself down the line as he said I had the right temperament but when he’d open up his diary to book me into the next lesson and it was just solidly filled out for 14 hours a day from 7am because people needed to work the lessons around their own already full lives and the instructor was accommodating them it just seemed like too much. He seemed to enjoy the job but he was putting in a helluva lot of hours, either through not having set boundaries and being a people pleaser, or just through sheer necessity. I couldn’t do it.
No matter how much money you earn, you've at least fully earned my respect with how helpful and interesting your videos are!

Love a good chat with Richard! Doesn't matter what you're talking about, I could listen for hours!
As a Driving instructor myself (15years in the game), this is excellent advice. Great videos all round.
Lessons only cost £7 back then too 👍
You are just Amazing. And how eloquent you are! Keep up the excellent videos you are providing us!
I recently got a manual, and I just can't keep getting enough of your videos! I think I've spent over 3 hours this past two week watching them :D
Example of how it goes here in Germany at the driving school where I got my license:
Driving lesson from 10-11:30.
I’m really jealous of that money in the thumbnail, he be ballin’. Very in-depth and interesting video, keep up the good work!
You helped me a lot to pass my driving test. I m from Sri Lanka & we also drive on the right side. Your instructions helped me a lot. Thanks Mr. Richard
Had driving licence since 1997 but still I enjoy watching your videoes and it's good to keep up to date :) Very good video!
That's great to hear, thank you.
I passed my driving test yesterday! 🥳 (auto) Your videos helped so so much you explain and display everything so well, thank you!
That's great to hear, congratulations on passing!
I passed my driving test from first time last Friday! I am really grateful to you🙂
Congratulations on passing!
Many thanks buddy, from a fellow UA-camr....
im a new driving instructor - you are a breath of fresh air to learn from..
When I was doing 8 hours a day fatigue would set in and my lessons would be lower quality than the days I did less.
VERY imformative and I have massive respect for people that can say so much info with next to none "emmm's or ahhhh's" Thanks for sharing these stats..
100% about the hours thing
it took me ages to get test ready, but once i passed, i didnt have much issues, i value the time i spent learning and for those still learning
once you pass, no one cares how long it took you to learn 👍
Please do more videos like this, very enjoyable to listen to how genuine you are as a person.
Kudos for your strugle johny. I admire your fairness with job and the way you teach.
Thank you for sharing this relevant essential information. I’m currently studying to be an ADI and this is super helpful. Best wishes to you.
Great video, thank you for sharing. I am currently considering training to be a driving instructor, and this video has been very helpful.
Nice one should've been. Longer thankyoi for your openness a d transparency. I have had 35 lessons and still struggling. Hopefully soon I will.
Excellent informative and well presented video. Thanks for posting and all the best.
Congratulations on passing!
I am 10 years older than you. I learn a lot from you through your video. Thanks you for your teaching!
Watching this from Sydney and being from Ipswich my ears pricked up
Thanks for the insight
Great video
Very interesting video.
Happy you answered my burning question of what jobs did you have before.
I watched every second. I don’t usually comment on videos as I feel they don’t get noticed. Still waiting on my test but been watching your vids for under a year now. Really appreciate your content, you have such a quirky and kind personality. This vid was very informative and interesting. Your personality and humour makes the vids so helpful and entertaining. You deserve everything, keep it up!!
P❤️
This was really interesting thanks for doing this video. Any job that comes with a Seat Leon FR has got to be a good one!
Your UA-cam channel is doing great (current estimated yearly is 57K), even if you are in a holiday, as long as you have viewers then it all sorted :). Your videos are informative so I am a subscriber.
And I also like the fact that there is not a single dislike.
Thanks for what you provide us with 😊
Lovely video ... Lots of respect for you ... Keep winning
Great video on a very difficult and diverse subject!!
Hi Richard, you are keeping me Sane!
We are teaching our twin daughters to drive ourselves 🙀😱🤯 as here in the far West of Cornwall we can not get an instructor. I've tried everyone but most do not have spaces on their list! They have tests booked in March.
We are all watching your video hoping we have gained enough information to get them through 🙏
Looking forward to more videos I love the clutch control one really makes me 😃
Take care xx
That's great to here! I wish your daughters the best of luck.
Hi Richard,
Just stumbled across this video whilst thinking of a career change would love a video on the first year of going it alone etc. First student, first test pass and fail. Things to watch out for mistakes made in business etc? Love the videos I'll be getting through a few this week I think.
Thank you for your suggestion, I may do in the future.
Did you ever do this video? I just passed my part 2 and I’m trying to figure out the same thing
You are like a best friend to me 😊🤩I feel like something missing when I don’t watch one of your videos...
Top man, I’m looking at being a driving instructor. Just trying to gather some information and figure out what I need etc cheers Bro, very helpful.
Thank you for your videos, it helped me a lot,now I can drive
You're a funny guy and I imagine a very chill instructor.
Started watching your content a while back as I have just started 'learning ' again after a 25 yr gap :/........ doing maneuvers in lesson 2 :D You can teach an old dog new tricks and it IS like learning a bike.
I like your honesty about the dislikes. My worst pupil came straight from work and he emptied dustbins for a living. I had to drive with my window open even in cold weather. I suppose I should have asked him to shower before the lesson but didn't have the nerve.
A very interesting video. I like your work ethic and how you apprach your work. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I respect how honest you are
I find Fiestas anc Corsas boring too, but a Fiesta ST is a lot of fun to drive, you should try it :).
I passed today but was still interested. I'd also be interested in a video where you talk about how you came to be a driving instructor.
You're great, thank you for your videos.
Don’t worry about the long video, I could watch you talk all day my man
Although yu dont know there are thousands of people passing driving tests all around the world because of your videos sir.i am one of them from sri Lanka
I worked in libraries and the NHS and agree about the dealing with the public thing -- it only takes one bad apple to spoil your day.
this is a brilliant video man. so interesting. thanks!
Thorough and articulate 👍
I passed last week first time at 33 🥳
I went from 0 experience to passing 4 months (don’t know how much hours)
Your videos helped so much to break down anything I struggled with in lessons so thank you for everything, I have recommended your videos to anyone who asks 🚘
That's great to hear, congratulations on passing!
I passed my part 2 a few days ago. I’m taking the pink route & can’t wait to start teaching. Your videos are honestly helping me along my journey to be an ADI.
That's great to hear, thank you.
what is pink route? can you please explain? thanks
@@kiranrijal4282 pink route is trainee licence
Great, insightful video Richard.
