Another reason is not off signal which failed me yesterday
I failed yesterday because I was too close to the parked car on the left while I was driving away from it on the narrow and short road.
@@joymaxs2874 oh i think that's mentioned there in the 9th item. I literally did a stupid thing of stopping in the middle of the road when i entered it from a junction. The area where you turn in right onto the road 😓 cry silly and i dis my menouvers and everything else with hust 2 minors overall. This was last year in the pandemic and had to redo my theory so now finally will try again. I was also a new mum at that point left my 3 month old with my 18 year old brother whilst my mum had gone in hospital with covid. Thanks soo much Richard for all of your content. I managed to pass my driving test on first attempt. I don’t think it would have been possible without your videos
Passed at first attempt in South Africa, thanks to this channel.
I'm happy to hear that! I wish you the best of luck.
These videos are so helpful for an American trying to learn manual. Instead of the typical "this is how you shift - the end" videos, your videos actually teach you how to approach common scenarios everyone encounters while driving. That is the key to confidence while learning to drive a manual in my opinion. At least as someone who learned on an automatic.
I'm very happy to hear them video is helping you ☺️
Don’t even live in the UK but I find all of your videos very interesting and packed full of information for new drivers and old drivers as well.
Same here.
Thank you so much :)
Alhumdullilah passed my Practical driving test 2 hours ago at Isleworth driving centre. Just wanted to give you huge round of applause for your wonderful videos on driving test. It really helped a lot.🎉💐🎈🎊 Keep it up.. Keep doing mate
That's great news! Congratulations on passing!
Hi Richard - thank you for this comprehensive list of most common fails on the UK driving test. Everyone of these mistakes are the same for driving tests in North America. Two differences I would posit between North America and the UK. Traffic is busier in and around metropolitan London and streets are way, way narrower which gives new drivers challenges. And the second factor is that most--if not all-UK drivers are taking their test is a manual car. In North America, I would say that most new drivers are taking their test on an automatic car which makes moving off a whole lot easier. All the best, Cheers Rick
All very true. You're welcome.
Sounds like a US Government advertisement to move to the country. Is it you there Mr Biden?
Americans don’t drive manuals?
@@ethansmith4202 considering that there is over 1 billion people in the Americas.... I'm pretty sure at least a few of them drive manuals cars.
Even if you just mean the 350million in the USA, some of them would most probably still drive manual cars.
@@ethansmith4202 They're just not popular in the US. It's sort of a self replicating issue. Most younger people learn how to drive in their parents' car, and since their parents drive an automatic transmission the younger people don't learn how to drive a manual. Of course that means that when they buy their own car, they buy an automatic, and eventually when they have children, the children don't have a manual to learn in.
Some Americans do learn how to drive a manual. I'm from the US, but I've only ever driven a manual when visiting family in the UK, which means I'm used to shifting gears with my left hand. In the US, shifting is with the right hand.
Another item to point out is that in the US a manual transmission means that it is less likely for your can to be stolen since fewer people know how to drive them.
Lastly, one other item to note is that in the US there is no differentiation between a licence to drive an automatic versus a manual car. A person in the US can have their driving test in a car with an automatic transmission and if they pass they are legally allowed to drive either type of car, automatic or manual. That's the main reason that if an American moves to the UK, he can only switch to a UK driving licence limited to automatic cars, but he must pass a UK driving test if he wants to be licenced for manual cars.

With the DVSA cancelling tests Thursday and Friday this week, and putting together a contingency plan due to Coronavirus, very fearful my test will be cancelled. Until anything is announced will continueto watch these videos though!
I'm sorry that your test was cancelled. It has happened to many people and I doubt driving tests will go ahead for 12 weeks or more.
@@ConquerDriving Needn't be, would much rather my test be cancelled and pushed back 3 months than risk transmitting the disease to a vulnerable person, anticipated it would happen anyway! People sometimes can forget observations when moving off after an emergency stop too.
That's true.
That's how I failed my second drivers test. Did an emergency stop and forgot to check my blind spots when moving off, I would have passed if not for that. Did pass the Third time though because I just kept my observation constant, even when my car stalled three times it was good enough.
Excellent video. I have driven i20 5 years back in Dehi, India with not a single ticket but yesterday I had my first driving lesson in Slough, UK and I realized how things are different here. The instructor kept telling me to not slowing down the vehicle just because you are seeing a pedestrian coming your way, its your side of the road and they have to stop they know. I was just being extra careful.
He also kept nudging me about having the left hand on shift and right on the wheel and controlling the steering single handedly all the time as if I am always ready to change gears. I have realized it becomes very difficult for the instructor to train someone who has already driven with own techniques in their country. Its also difficult to unlearn bad techniques as a driver when you were always confident driver back home.
It is very true, teaching a beginner is quite different to teaching somone who is experienced. You have to approach it in a different way.
I love how honest you are
I’ve passed my driving test this Wednesday.. your videos were very helpful..thank you ❤

Passed my driving test 2days ago, First time... these tips are paramount... Thank You So much Mate... for taking your time to give us these tips... they are a great help. KEEP DOING what you are doing, people need these...10min into my test "My examiner asked me to Park on the left and drive of when ready" ... I accidentally put the gear i reverse, it went back for a splut second, I was terrified, though ita was fail, I didn't dwell in it though, composed myself, carried out my observations, signalled and drove of... inside I was scared, but I knew I had to focus, 20min into my test he directed me back to the driving centre, in my head I thought he had seen enough and I have failed, when we got to the center he asked me to reverse into a bay... I did that perfectly, turned the engine off, couldn't belive it when he said you've passed, with 1 minor, that silly reverse mistake...
I'm so happy to hear that, well done!
Your teaching/instructions are brilliant mate. I’m getting more confident by the day in preparation for my test soon.
An excellent video that many qualified drivers would benefit from watching. Observation and road position are critical to safety as of course is appropriate speed for road conditions.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly. This helped me so much. Test tomorrow I feel more at ease
I completely understand how so many people can fail their test on daydreaming at a traffic light - I zoned out at a traffic light since it was notorious for taking the mick, and then my lane's filter light went green without me realising and I was at the front of the queue! Luckily I noticed before anything happened but I remember my examiner said I was about two seconds away from failing for that!
If I'm honest I zone out at the longer lights too. Can't stare at a red light for nearly 2 minutes without day dreaming.
Just passed my test yesterday!! I’ve been watching your videos for months, thanks a bunch :)

I like watching your videos becaue i feel like i am learning the basic principes of how to drive properly. 2 or 3 of your top 9 fails (especially not using mirrots when changing lane) are more or less SOPs in Thailand, and the less said about motorcycle delivery drivers, the better. There's a joke going round that all fighter pilots for the Royal Thai Air Force have to do 6 months as delivery drivers to sharpen up their reactions!

In my locality the fails were revenue gathering by a corrupt testing office who were found to have the highest fail rate in New Zealand. Both my sons were failed twice at the local place but then passed first time at another testing centre. @@ConquerDriving the kicker was apparently that examiner has failed everyone one of my instructors students for the passed 3 years. so when they saw I had that particular examiner they were doubtful. So I’m definitely sure you played a part in me passing. Thanks again
Extremely thorough, professional and helpful information, excellent graphics, delivery and presentation thank you.
Worth mentioning Richard, that having observed 100s of tests over yrs, I've noticed a lot of observation faults, could have been listed as a different fault, which may muddy the figures a bit.
Take a pupil emerging on to a roundabout heading 1st exit left, they look to the right and see a car approaching in the right hand lane of roundabout. They wrongly assume it's OK to proceed as they are staying in left hand lane, not realising/understanding that the approaching may need to move into left lane to exit roundabout (and often does).
Examiners often mark this as 'observation', when in fact its a lack of understanding fault (no area for that on test sheet) or possibly judgement fault.
This causes confusion when pupil explains to their instructor that, they did see the car coming.
Also (as you mentioned) pulling out on a vehicle at a T junction causing them to slow too much, can be a progress or again a judgement fault, but very often recorded as observation.
This doesn't alter the fact that these are serious faults, but the trainer may well wrongly concentrate on the observation side post test. Thank you for interesting video again.
Very true, many of my customers assume they can do that.
My test will be in an hour time . Have the last check on this video . Thank for the videos . Fingers crossed for my test .

I failed my first test on 'moving off safely', because I put my indicator on before moving off and there was a cyclist on the road. Cyclist didn't change speed, I pulled off fine, only had 2 minors by the end of it, but they gave me a serious.

I actually failed for putting the indicator on for moving off when I was learning too.
So when you’re moving off after pulling up on the left you shouldn’t indicate ?
