- I have never seen this version of this song online anywhere and it is, without a doubt, the best version of "I Cover the Waterfront" I have ever heard Ms. Billie sing.
This is my favorite version, the piano work is especially great and wonderfully complements Billie's singing.
AGREED.
" Will you remember, will you return " brings tears to my eyes every time.
This song has been a quarreling in my heart since I was 10... Thank you Billie... 😚😚😚
This version of this song is really what turned me on to jazz and blues singers. And Billie. I wish I could find this whole album I checked it out from the Ottumwa library in April of 1978 at the age of 16 and never looked back.
Best version, just with her piano man, Bobby Tucker. Recorded live in Boston in 1951 on a shellac record. Released later in a compilation narrated by Tucker that includes four1937 live NYC recordings as well as 4 tracks from Boston in 1951. Billie Holiday, "piano man" Bobby Tucker tells the Lady Day Story. Trip, Jazz TLP5024, 1977.
there's bass and drums they are just low in the mix
I agree this is the best version anybody has ever sung.
The immortal Billie. She died around about the day I was concieved...
Incomparable innovation. Sweet Lady Day...
(Live (1954/Cologne-Germany)) =D
Love you Billie. I always will.
This is my favorite version!
This version is on the album "Billie's Blues". Been listening to it for many years; not so rare! It is my favorite version, however.
It's always funny to me when people put stuff up on youtube and title it "Rare blah blah blah.." It's not rare anymore!
Delphine Kirkland I think that they were referring to the images . . . I was expecting footage of the ‘live performance’ of “I Cover the Waterfront,” like the film of Louie Armstrong singing this fabulous song. You’re so right about people taking license to say “rare” this and that!
When they say "rare" it's just because it is something uncommon and unknown to most. After all, this was a personal presentation, which makes it a "rare" collector's item, a most valuable piece. I wonder who could get it and how, but this is a reason to be even more thankful to whoever did it and shared it with us. Thanks to this channel!!!
By the way, I forgot to add that this particular version has an introduction that the recording I had did not include. This was a surprise to me and that's another reason to consider it rare, although not so much to us because now we know.
Mine too!!! Ohemgeee my introduction to this version was a la Malcolm X movie 🥰🥰
heaven would be to have been able to see this live
I discovered this album (and bourbon) at sixteen. Changed my life. And yes, I totally agree, this is the best version of this song I've ever heard, by Billie or anybody.
I'm so glad that you posted this version of the song...No other version can compare to this one as far as I am concerned.
Thank you--this is amzing, i think this is from her 1st tour of Europe, she was stil in good voice...a few pics i have never seen. Again thanx for this great video...Long live Lady...~~~
entranced i was when i first heard this. my body may be here- in the now. but my mind is somewhere else, in a different time plane.
Away from the city that hurts and knocks,
I'm standing alone by the desolate docks
In the still and the chill of the night
I see the horizon the great unknown
My heart has an ache
It's as heavy as stone
With the dawn coming on, make it last
I cover the waterfront
I'm watching the sea
Will the one i love
Be coming back to me
I cover the waterfront
In search of my love
An i'm covered
By a starlit sky above
Here am i
Patiently waiting
Hoping and longing
Oh how i yearn
Where are you
Have you thought back time
Will you remember
Will you return
Will the one i love
Be coming back
To me
hurt and MOCKS.
Loving her voice 😢 sad but sentimental
Best I've ever heard her voice.. lovely.
This is beautiful thank you so much
I love this song but I've never heard this version before. Wow! She nailed that dead on. Give it up for the fabulous accompaniment too.
When I first got into Holliday as a teen just getting into jazz, this was the version I'd heard on the cassette I bought with a collection of her best songs on it. Always liked this because it seemed so much modern than her other songs, and I always thought it could have made a good movie theme, since it's a nice, sad, beautiful song.
It's so nice to hear the rarely performed verse to this tune. The only other people I've heard do it are Jacqui Naylor and the Dutch group Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
wow that is so good of a song
Beautiful, simply beautiful.
I am uite old lady and i love her she mâles me Well when i liste to her
Beautiful fantastically beautiful!
best version by far.
My favorite version
1954, from her European tour(:
Thank you so much for posting Lady Day at one of her best vocal times! xo
This is my favorite version of "I Cover the Waterfront". Just Billie and Bobby Tucker on piano...always gives me chills. Thank you for posting.

Superbe ! Mille mercis !
You can also find this version on the Se7en soundtrack...
Happy Birthday Lady Day, beautiful!
Wonderful Billie Holiday. Such a terrific, emotional voice. Try Louis Armstrong 1931 Copenhagen for the same song. RIP Billie and Pops.
BILLIE HOLIDAY: Deliziosa.Anche dopo settantanni!💕
THANK YOU
This version is available in the movie soundtrack "SEVEN".
So good. She was impeccable in her early years. The drugs ruined her
Not that rare, just that special. Took me a while to find this particular take on here, my favorite for 30 years.
Yeah, transcendent. The piano player kills it as well.
Carl Drinkard, Piano.
Creo no equivocarme que al piano esta Carl Drinkard
She lost her voice!
