There is a saying in Finland from the Winter War, "Kollaa kestää". It literally means "Kollaa holds on". Even though Finland lost the Winter War, the Kollaa region held on until the end. The saying represents Finnish sisu and also Spirit of the Winter War. These concepts are not commonly known anymore especially by youth, but they are an essential part of Finnish identity.

That's actually a nice saying. Young people also should know that in my opinion. Thanks for the info!

I've always been of the mind that Saimaa area is *the* hidden gem of Finland when it comes to travel. Especially as Finland suffers a lot from the same tourist-effect that Japan suffers from, both when it comes to international and domestic tourists: Areas outside of the capital area don't get a lot of that tourist exposure (and the money that people bring with them and the visibility that tourists take away with them back home through videos, photos and word of mouth). So if anyone reading this ever finds themselves in Finland: Please, please, please visit the Eastern Finland area. So much nature, so many lakes, extremely friendly people.

@@DAIKIFinlandLife Koli and Nurmes both have Sokos Hotels in them, along with some really cool spa's! I've taken my Singaporean friend to the Sokos Hotel Koli Relax Spa twice now whenever he has visited Finland. And Koli itself has fantastic views from the very top. You can see a glimpse of those views in a painting that is located in the Helsinki main railway station's Burger King, right above the food order counters!

Nice video again. I have a strong family background to South-Karelia even I have never lived there myself. Even my parents met in Imatra long time ago and were married there. That Citymarket in the video is visible from my mother's window.

It was interesting how you noted that in the east you could see more of the war related museums etc. I am from Turku but i spend my summers in Imatra because my relatives live there. The difference in culture is notable in many areas, but i've always noticed how the people in the east never really liked or trusted russians in the way the south-west does (even before the conflict). No one anywhere in Finland will be able to forget the wars, but it is no doubt a fact that the east suffered the most.

I went to see that sculpture park in late 90's. The statues look creepy even in bright daylight. I heard that the artist got lots of fake teeth from some dentist to use as his sculptures teeth. The sculptures are made of concrete so they will not last forever, but they still look to be in good shape.

War history you can come across through out Finland. The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress in Helsinki is one of the most popular tourist sights in Finland and E.g. Vyborg's athlete club Viipurin Urheilijat relocated to Helsinki, when during the WW2 Vyborg's population was evacuated and the town was ceded to the Soviet Union as part of the peace terms. Some Japan related war history. During the Russification era of Finland, Russia and Japan fought the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). Finns celebrated when Japan won the Battle of Port Arthur in Manchuria. At the same time new district was being built in Turku. The story goes that when a mason working there was asked what he was building, he answered that he was building Port Arthur. The name stuck and that's how there is now Port Arthur in Turku. A song from that era: "1904 - Finnish song about the Russo-Japanese War [ENG/FIN]". Russia failing in the war gave rise to internal restlessness in Russia, and historically significant things were brewing in Tampere. Later Tampere became one of the main stages of Finnish Civil War: "Miksi Tampereella on Lenin-museo?". Mannerheim fought in the Imperial Russian Army in the Russo-Japanese War and was promoted as colonel. Later he led the Finnish forces against the Soviet forces in the WW2.
