Great representation of Sharm! I've been to Egypt 12 times, 6 times Shark and I love it the most, although every place is great!
About the hasslers; just say politely La, shukran and they'll say ok.
As a blond female I got a lot of them but they never really bothered me.
Thank you for this, I needed it more than I thought

    Hello John,
I am a male from Egypt, but I have been living in Seattle, USA, since 1980. I have also spent some years living in London, Nottingham, and Birmingham. I wanted to reach out to you to express my admiration for your videos about Egypt. Your personality shines through your videos, and they are a pleasure to watch. I appreciate that you have an open mind about the country and its people, and you showcase Egypt in the best possible way. Your video editing skills are excellent, and you manage to keep your videos exciting, regardless of their length. Keep up the great work!

I've been to Sharm multiple times and just love it. I want to add a comment about the amazing friendliness and hospitality of the Egyptian people you will meet. Yes it will be predominately men, however as a solo female traveller they are always nothing but kind and respectful. Also, seeing how they interact with parents, and especially the children is fantastic. If you have young children don't be concerned by this familiarity - which can include picking the kids up and showing them a lot of positive attention. It's just the way people are in Egypt, and the Middle East in general..... kind, caring, respectful, and so very generous.
Btw the vendors will harrass you, but this has been their way of working for more than a hundred years (read Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile which also mentions it and was published in 1937).
For me - the #1 draw is the underwater world... however Sharm has so much to offer as your video shows.

      Are there many restaurants

    • @sarahwalton2662
      @sarahwalton2662 8 місяців тому +11

Kam: yes there are. I'm going to break this down below into outside, and inside, of the resorts. Here you go:
Outside: There are two main pedestrian areas which have many restaurants and fast food chains (KFC etc.). These are Naama Bay, and Soho Square.
The old market (souk) also featured in the video will also have cafes etc which are likely a bit more 'local' in feel.
There is also a huge restaurant/cabaret venue in the El Hadaba area of Sharm called Alf Layla Wa Layla (1001 Nights..... remember Ali Ba Ba and the 40 Thieves?). As well as food they have entertainment including belly dancing, and the whirling dervish etc.
Again do do back to my point above that when you're out and about you will likely be approached multiple times by restaurant, shop, stall vendors to go into their place. The best way to let this not annoy you is to make the decision not to be annoyed (haha) It is perfectly okay to just keep walking past, even if someone is still talking to you, and don't engage if you're not interested. You can even add a polite 'La Shukrahn' if you like (no thank you in Arabic).
Also, taxis to and from each location will be needed and are not the cheapest. If you don't want to barter/haggle a price then have the hotel reception to arrange a hotel for you, and you can arrange with the driver a pick up time and place for them to collect you and rake you back to the hotel. Bear in mind the price you pay outbound is only one way (I.e. you will have to pay the same amount on the return journey).
In the hotel: will have one or more buffet style restaurants for your All Inclusive package. They usually have a wide range of food and desserts, and alcoholic and non-alcohic drinks (hot and cold). Some hotels are better than others when it cones to quality and taste of food. Although you can never go wrong with Middle Eastern dishes. Most also have 'snack' and 'beach' bars open throughout the day. Snack bars often have cakes, sanwiches, ice-cream, and hot/cold beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Beach bars do chips/fries, burgers, pizza etc; again with the full range of drinks.
Most hotels also have a few separate 'A la carte' restaurants which are typically a dedicated type of food. E.g. Italian, bar-b-que/grill etc..
Most All Inc. Packages allow one or some visits to the A la carte restaurants for free during your stay. But outside of that you will have to pay. Do check what your All Inclusive package includes for visits to these as it varies from hotel to hotel, or chain to chain, and how long your stay is. For example, on a 7 night stay one hotel may only allow you a single free A la carte restaurant visit to one of their restaurants and you will have to choose which; whereas another hotel may have a better deal where you get at least one free visit to each of the resort's a la carte restaurants during your stay. The a la carte restaurants need to be booked in advance and this can be done at somewhere in the hote reception or your hotel room phone.
Honestly though... personally I have found that the food isn't really that much better than the All Inclusive buffet at the a la cartes i have visited. The only difference really being the table service, more intimate setting, and food presentation on the plates. But that's just my opinion/experience :)
Finally, do expect to come back from your holiday a few pounds heavier 😁😁

We're actually in Sharm right now. This is our second year here. My husband and I were laughing at the "do not enter a shop, or the door will be closed and the family will come down." This happened to us last year- we entered a shop after being asked to go in, and he closed the door behind us. It was a bit scary, but he made us tea and showed us just about everything for sale in his shop. In the end, to make a getaway, we bought some (horrendously overpriced) camel milk moisturiser and a massive bag of loose tea leaves. The forceful approach is a bit much, but we learned our lesson and won't be entering this year 😂.

We were in another country some 25 years ago, where some shop/restaurant owners had a similar sales ethic. We were lured into a restaurant on our first day...and he wouldn't let us leave! So we pushed our way out and he threatened to shoot us if he saw us again! But we walked past his place on a number of other occasions and he didn't recognise us. All talk..thank god!

That happened to my family in Turkey! We got locked in a carpet shop. They made us apple tea and tried to get my parents to buy a carpet. My brother and I weren't very old (I think I was about 8 and my brother 6) but my parents were forceful enough that after an hour, they not only let us go without buying anything, they took us on a small tour of the local mosque by way of apology. It was not my parents' first rodeo to be fair though and my brother and I were used to spending whole weekends in the travel agency amusing ourselves so it wasn't that different for us 😂

Thanks Tim, it brings back some memories. We had a boat trip to Tirana Island in 2015, when it was still open to public, we stoped for snorkeling at almost the same spot as you did near the shipwreck, and my little sun was given a chance to drive the boat a bit on the way back ;) Our hotel was the one with a lighthouse 11:06 , it was very inexpensive, but surprisingly good, and convenient (small territory, few steps only to the beach), and more importantly, it had one of the best coral reefs in Egypt. Later that hotel was sold to Sunrise hotels chain and now its name is Sunrise Remal Beach. We moved to Australia in 2017, and Egypt is out of reach for us now. Literally crying :(

Travelled to Sharm in 2013 and it was the worst holiday of mine and my young family’s lives.
From the moment we landed it was harassment non stop until we got back on the plane to come home!
To top it all off, all four of us along with most of the hotel guests went down with food poisoning after the fourth day of fourteen.
We were prescribed Antinal which is banned in the U.K. and used only for animal use.
Such a shame as the sea life is undeniably some of the best in the world, as are the beaches and weather!

In Egypt or Turkey or many places outside the EU the best bet is to simply buy a local SIM card or a tourist SIM, which is preloaded with loads of data and is usually not very expensive. You can get them at arrivals in the airport or in some shops. Turkcell is best in Turkey, Vodafone usually best coverage in Egypt. I think in Egypt it is something like £7 for 10GB or £15 for 30GB which you'll probably never use even over a couple weeks of holiday. Reason why this is so great in Egypt is because Uber exists! In Hurghada, Cairo, Alexandria and a few other spots you can hit up an Uber- no haggling, no arguing or tips- just cheap taxis. Sharm has yet to have Uber so that's a shame but wait and see.

There is somthing about Egypt that gives me anxiety, everyone i know personally who has gone has absolutely hated it and some even came home early, your video has been some what of an eye opener for me, it looks absolutely beautiful, but there is just gut feeling in my tummy telling me i wouldnt like it 😢, i went to Turkey and absolutely fell in love with it, but it seems like all the things i was terrified of in turkey (mainly the strangers and shop owners approaching you and not taking no for an answer) seems to be 10xs more amplified in Egypt 😣 shame really, because it looks absolutely beautiful but i dont think its somewhere i could see my self going. On another note, your videos are absolutely fantastic tim, keep them comming 🤗

Only problem is I can't stand being hassled, walking around shops etc. Don't want to be put in a bad mood on holiday haha and I like to look in the shops as well and being hassled just spoils it. Be interested to know it they do that to the locals, bet they don't, just the tourists. Would rather go Greek islands or Spain myself, the sea in Rhodes is great 🥰

Greetings. Ibrahim in Canterbury UK here. I am British, Canadian...and Egyptian! Yes seriously. Born in Cairo but left at age 18 months. Have not been back for a visit since 1987, so your video holds quite a fascinating for me. Interesting the number of "Mohamed's" in your video, as my father's name is Mohamed, as is my middle name. I can still speak Arabic almost fluently, though never learned to read of write it. Still have lots of family in Egypt. Anyhow, watching this right now as I type, totally fascinated. Your night time footage was a huge eye opener for me! I could not believe how modern it all looks.
I have been subscribed to your channel for quite some time, after watching a video you made regarding Christmas in Bournemouth. This is quite a contrast...and in my country of birth too!
Enjoy the rest of your stay, hope my fellow Egyptians treat you well and safe travels back to Blighty.
    Merci & Shokran!

It was a good place to aim for as there were a couple of places you could get water there. I think maybe one or two Hotels. It's been amazing watching it grow over the years and revisiting on diving holidays.
