For you non trombone players I don't think you know how hard this piece is. Joe Alessi plays it best if you want a really good recording.

Not the revised version, but the recording of Arthur Pryor with the susa band is fricken dope and really technically accurate. The sound recording really high quality for late 1800s early 1900s

For some backstory, Arthur Pryor probably the single best trombone player to ever live wrote this solo for himself to play with the Sousa band. All the solos Arthur pryor wrote were for himself to play, and they were tailored to his insane skill level. Also, the first time he played the Bluebells of scotland solo people thought it was fake and that he wasn't actually playing the solo. So to play the solo you have to be as good as him. Also, just a fun fact but Arthur Pryor when first learning the slide trombone he practiced 10hrs a day. Maybe that helped him increase to a crazy insane skill level. You all should check out some of Arthur Pryor's recordings, even though they are from the very early 1900s they are still very crazy.

Honestly, Chriss could have done so much better on this. As a freshman trombonist in high school, this piece is hard (especially the third variation which I cannot play a lick of at any tempo), but the second variation isn't as hard as it sounds and really, It is just the same thing over and over again. Chris is a great trombonist, but I can tell he half-assed this.

Ben Ice well it’s still very hard and you can’t say he ‘half assed’ it when you admit you can’t play it (and you’re a freshman so shut up)

@@yourname6486 he really Could've done better, I believe he focused more on other pieces. You can tell he didn't care much to play this piece perfectly, It is Chris after all(if he wanted to sound like Mr. Alessi he would've done that). So in a way he did haft ass.

Ben Ice you need to consider that he had been playing for a while before this and his chops were shot. Also, the conductor kinda screwed him at the end

Winston Then he shouldn’t have programmed this piece. People pay money to see a consummate performance, and it’s an insult to the audience to be this unprepared. Your job as a performer is to serve the music and serve the audience, and this unfortunately did neither.

Jude Folmar this appears to be not a paid concert, but a performance with novice musicians. This is more of a recital concert than a real paid gig, and it seems to be more in celebration of the band, and they decided to bring in a “celebrity” out of good faith. I agree he could have been more prepared, but this isn’t a concert where people paid to see excellence, but to support their peers in the band
