Grew up at a Bible believing (Gospel Preaching) Church for 21 years, then I left to join a Church, I found out to be, seeker sensitive Church. Last week I returned to my Church of 21 years and am not looking back. All I want is Scripture, not fog machines, ted talks, or movies.

It’s the doctrine of Total Depravity/Total Inability that says that we are unable to repent and believe the message that is the power of God unto salvation unless we are first effectually graced, regenerated, and given a new heart and faith in order to believe. That’s what Total Depravity/Total Inability is. It isn’t the teaching that all have sinned. It’s the teaching that all have sinned and are unable to receive the reconciliation that God has provided for them in Christ.
The doctrine of Total Depravity/Total Inability does not “make us realize how much we need God and how blind we are to our sins that we don't even realize that we're sinning”. Jesus even said those who don't believe do so BECAUSE they are not His sheep, they refuse to believe. Notice the order: He didnt say that they refuse to believe and therefore are not the sheep. Other way around. He purposefully doesn't reveal truth to some, he even says so explicitly to the disciples. This is why John MacArthur never knows if he is saved or not, he believes his works would save him. Or at least he hopes his works saves him.
    Calvinism is bad theology.

What do you mean by "TOTAL depravity?" Calvinists always leave the phrase of "total depravity" more or less open ended because they have no biblically based definitive absolute interpretation or explanation as to what it means.
    >> T - "Total Depravity;"
Calvinist claim that no one can act in faith until they're born again, yet people did; see Hebrews chapter 11 (not to mention the whole Old Testament filled with records of non-born again people acting in faith contrary to Calvinist false doctrine). Jesus strongly refutes the Calvinist false doctrine of "total depravity" in this scripture as clear as it as it can be...
"Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" - John 1:47 KJV
    Or...
"Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" - John 1:47 NKJV
NOTE: Nathanael was a man of NO guile, NO deceit; he was NOT "totally depraved." A person without guile is a person of innocence, honest intent, and pure motives, whose life reflects the simple practice of conforming his daily actions to principles of integrity.
Also, David was called "A man after God's own heart." "The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart” (1 Sam. 13:14). The second time was by the Apostle Paul who recounted Israel's history, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will” (Ac. 13:22).
Calvinism claims that man is totally depraved and cannot choose to believe, the Bible says man can “do good.”
Luke 6:33 - "And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same."
The Bible says man can believe...
Revelation 22:17 -"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."
Yet, believing is not a good work...
Romans 4:5-7 - "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered."
ALSO, no one was born again UNTIL Jesus rose from the dead...
1 Peter 1:3 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
NOTE: "by the resurrection of Jesus Christ"... no one was regenerated UNTIL Jesus rose from the dead.
"begotten" is the same as "born again," "born of God," "regenerated," etc. David, as an example. was NOT regenerated (born again) until Jesus rose.

14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion,2 but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump done vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory- 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?

Fortunately God already provided us with the script - the Bible, Old and New testaments. Some are able to memorize it, some can’t, but study it so that you can, know where to look, and reference it, read aloud to others. The Apostles in the days following the Resurrection eloquently presented the message and folks were inspired to write it all down. Worth repeating over and over again. And praying for God to work in the lives of others rather than burdening ourselves with worry about our own perceived inadequacies and failures.

The reality and gravity of sin may be the most hated biblical doctrine. Total depravity is the most hated false doctrine that masquerades as biblical doctrine. MacArthur, Washer, et. al. are blinded in their Calvinism and enslaved to their Augustinian interpretation of John 6, Romans. They cannot leave Calvinism unless they are willing to more neutrally study the Scripture.
We are spiritually dead and blind in our (not Adam's) sin. But the biblical remedy is accepting the gospel, putting trust in Christ, and repentance toward God. Nothing in the Bible indicates that it is impossible to hear and receive the gospel.

I fully trust in Jesus for my salvation, thank you. Just as Jesus asks. Just as Peter preaches. Just as Paul instructs.
I think you misunderstand my post. I never said nor implied that I can save myself. I only said that what makes me unable to save myself is my own sin done out of my free-will choices, rather than a divinely-imposed total depravity (T.D.). The inability of the sinner to save himself is not dependent on the doctrine of TD. Since all sin, all need the Savior. I just believe that our sin makes us guilty because we could have done otherwise and are, therefore, morally culpable for our sinful thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.
The call to believe, repent, be baptized, etc. is biblical. God would not require what is not possible. Therefore, total depravity is untrue. I think that those who support T.D. misunderstand John 6, Eph. 2, and a handful of other verses.
BTW, making this personal and assuming what is in my heart (e.g., "you trust yourself, stop it.") is not generally good form. I recommend that theological debate be done by looking at biblical text in context (using the historical-grammatical method to get to the author's intended meaning) and examining the meaning of what the Word says rather than immediately making it personal.

@@Nathannnnnnnnnn I agree. Though, I usually prefer to say that salvation is unmerited but conditional. God's love is unmerited and unconditional, but enjoying its benefits is conditional. I think we're saying the same thing in different ways.
We see it being like the prodigal son who has loved by his father but did not enjoy the benefits of his love until he decided to humbly return. Not just a few proof texts either. Believe and turn back to God (repent), is the consistent call of the Bible.
      We would affirm the following:
All sinners are unworthy of salvation.
Jesus' sufficient work is already completed as He paid the penalty for our sins on the cross.
Salvation has been gained by Christ.
Salvation is offered to unworthy sinners.
Not all sinners are saved because...
      Salvation is conditional.
You must accept the gospel call and be born again.
You can't make yourself worthy or take credit for your salvation...

What if I told you that God created sin and that He ordains and is responsible for every murder, every rape, and every heinous evil act ever committed? You’d say that’s heresy right?! And I totally agree, but under Calvinism that statement is unequivocally true. You don’t believe me, right? Well, just read for yourself then. In fact, I didn’t know this up until recently either and so I feel compelled to share.
    John Calvin:
“Men do nothing save at the secret instigation of God, and do not discuss and deliberate on anything but what he has previously decreed with himself, and brings to pass by his secret direction.”
“The will of God is the chief and principal cause of all things.”
“But where it is a matter of men’s counsels, wills, endeavours, and exertions, there is greater difficulty in seeing how the providence of God rules here too, so that nothing happens but by His assent and that men can deliberately do nothing unless He inspire it.”
“What we must prove is that single events are ordered by God and that every event comes from his intended will. Nothing happens by chance.”
    Calvinist Theologian R.C. Sproul Jr.:
“God wills all things that come to pass…God desired for man to fall into sin. I am not accusing God of sinning; I am suggesting that God created sin.”
    Calvinist Theologian J.I. Packer:
“God orders and controls all things, human actions among them…He [also] holds every man responsible for the choices he makes and the courses of action he pursues… Man is a responsible moral agent, though he is also divinely controlled; man is divinely controlled, though he is also a responsible moral agent. To our finite minds, of course, the thing is inexplicable.”
    Calvinist Theologian Gordon Clark:
“I wish very frankly and pointedly to assert that if a man gets drunk and shoots his family, it was the will of God that he should do it… Let it be unequivocally said that this view certainly makes God the cause of sin. God is the sole ultimate cause of everything. There is absolutely nothing independent of him. He alone is the eternal being. He alone is omnipotent. He alone is sovereign. Some people who do not wish to extend God’s power over evil things, and particularly over moral evils…The Bible therefore explicitly teaches that God creates sin.“
Calvinist Theologian Mark Talbot (included in “Suffering and Sovereignty of God” by John Piper):
“God brings about all things in accordance with his will. It isn’t just that God manages to turn the evil aspects of our world to good for those that love him; it is rather that he himself brings about these evil aspects… This includes God’s having even brought about the Nazi’s brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child.”
    Calvinist Theologian James White:
In a debate with Hank Hannegraaf and George Bryson, Mr White was asked, “When a child is raped, is God responsible and did He decree that rape?” To which Mr. White replied: “Yes, because if not then it’s meaningless and purposeless and though God knew it was going to happen he created it without a purpose… and God is responsible for the creation of despair… If He didn’t [decree child rape] then that rape is an element of meaningless evil that has no purpose.”
John Wesley said about this doctrine (and I concur) that it makes God worse than the devil. He said that at least with the devil, you know what you’re getting, but under Calvinism, there’s a duplicity to God where on the one hand he is good and loving and kind and compassionate but on the other, He is the cause of all evil in the world. And so He is both the light and the darkness, making him worse than the devil because then the one that you rely on for all things good is also the one who ordains/compels you to sin and also ordains/causes all evil upon you and the rest of his saints. In fact, under this doctrine, God doesn’t even need the devil if you think about it. It’s really sick in my opinion and I believe it should be rejected. After all, does that sound like “Good News” to you???
Believe me folks, I take absolutely zero pleasure in posting this, especially on here because I absolutely love Todd, but I was Reformed up until I learned of just how far Calvinism takes absolute sovereignty and so I think people should be able to see it for themselves and then decide to embrace or reject it. I genuinely love all my brothers and sisters in Christ and that is the reason that I share this. I say that honest before the Lord God Almighty. And if you agree that this doctrine is dangerous, then I might encourage you to tell other professing Calvinists/Reformed about it so they can decide for themselves because I don’t think most Calvinists know that this is what Calvinism actually teaches. I know I didn’t. And to anyone who would say that I’m just trying to malign Calvinism, I’m doing nothing more than simply providing quotes from Calvin himself and from theologians who subscribe to his teachings.
You can just Google “calvinist quotes on God determining all evil” to see more as well as the references for the above quotes. A theology in tension is the website and I have no connection to it just as an FYI. Side bar… he says “Welcome to Arminianism” on the webpage but that’s not the only alternative view to Calvinism. I know we’ve all been conditioned to shun that word and personally I’ve been studying the traditionalist view, which aligns with people like CS Lewis and AW Tozer. Lord bless.

I believe that we are sinners and cannot save ourselves. We definitely need outside help. What I disagree with is what "dead" means. I see the Biblical concept of death to mean separation not cessation of life.
Adam and Eve were forced out of the garden of Eden where the tree of life was. They were separated from it.
James says the body without (separated from) the spirit is dead. But that doesn't mean that the spirit ceased to live.
Unregenerate humanity will in some sense be separated from God in hell, but they will not cease to live (what a horrible life).
Therefore, dead in trespasses and sins does not mean that we can't choose to seek God and cry out for his help. It means that we are separated from God and his life changing grace.

We lost the true meaning of the gospel, good news and replaced it with a message of despair and hopelessness, driving sinners away from God. Jesus proclaimed AND demonstrated the good news, these men ramble empty words and do not demonstrate the goodness of God. Jesus went around DOING good, healing the sick and delivering the oppressed. These men don't do that, they only add to the sinner's burdens. The good news isn't told, much less demonstrated. The Lord confirmed the words of the early disciples by signs and wonders. If these men and your message was truly of God, He would confirm it by demonstrating His goodness. The absence of signs and wonders and miracles clearly confirms the true gospel isn't told.

It's not an issue of man's depravity that's hated, it's the idea of regeneration preceding faith. John said "these things are written so that you might believe, and in believing that you may have life though His name"
The gospel is not the power of God unto salvation when you have the doctrine of regeneration saying it's impossible for the dead to believe.

The problem is this idea of regeneration preceding faith is not on the bible. It is the calvinist idea that has been inserted On to the scriptures. Paul reminded us that faith comes by hearing the word of god. If the regeneration was necessary, He would have included that point.
