I can't say this is bad, I'm sorry, I just can't. It's so puzzling! For all the weirdly stressed and phrased lines, the weirdly paced moments, the goaty vibrato at times, he hits some moments perfectly! That key change where he opts for the higher version of "damn all the odds"? No one else has even hit that half as good in my opinion, it's clear as a bell. And he's just so invested! He absolutely cares about all of it, he apparently has wanted to be on Broadway since he was a kid, and he is enjoying himself so much that I can't not enjoy it along with him. You go, Hoff, well done!
His higher version of damn all the odds is the only part where he sounds like a real singer to me. He needs to tighten up his vibrato, it’s very loose and makes his voice sound like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. I’m torn because he acts the role VERY well, just doesn’t sing it as well as he could. Maybe this disparity was intentional due to the nature of the character? But it just looks like bad casting.
Tbf he does hit that damn all the odds really well . His vib is just so off putting for me it just pulls me out of it . His acting is pretty decent shame his singing just isn’t as good . However I’m later songs like alive he goes abit to far where his acting is almost comical
Out of all the versions, he's the only one I can find that goes for THAT note on the line "Damn all the odds!" So he gets a pass for the occasional wonky held-note.
Have you seen Constantine Maroulis' ? Not saying he's necessarily better I'm just asking because he does it (However I have to admit Constantine completely butchers alive) 😂
I absolutely agree with the Heart David put into this song and he did achieve a couple soaring “Moments” but his vocal range and particularly Stamina just can’t match his heart.
He is very good. He was my first viewing of the show, and he was my first Jekyll & Hyde. So I cannot hate him. I love him in this role, as much as I would love to see Anthony Warlow in this DVD, I give David Hasselhoff, Props and Credit for doing this show. Its a very hard role to do just by yourself. He made his Broadway Debut with this. Sure he's not the best, but he's my first
Please don't hate me for saying this; I think David Hasselhoff did a very good job for his first time on Broadway. He isn't the very best Jekyll & Hyde, but hey the man tried and he did pass out after the Confrontation. For all of you saying he was horrible; I'd like to see you go out there and perform like he has. I love his Jekyll & Hyde, and he was my very first viewing of the show. I wish there was an audio of this version. This cast was very good. In My opinion that is
He was definitely NOT horrible - that’s unfair and unduly harsh! It’s clear he took sn enormous risk and put everything he had into this role which deserves credit and RESPECT. David’s vocal range and stamina struggled to match the Heart he put into this performance but I think he did the role credit.
Imagine me being a nurse but performing heart surgery. The patient, of course, will die. But then I'll just say "Hey now, I went from cleaning puke and fluffing pillows to performing heart surgery. Sure I might not be the best, but I stitched him back up. That's still pretty good, right?" 😂
I'm impressed. He's working so hard and the technique is there. Sure, years and years more of practice will only make a person better, but I see the dedication. He's really working on it and going for it. I wish I could have seen this in person.
I just can't decide what to make of this. There are many obvious vocal issues, plus some awkward movements and gestures, yet some parts sound great (especially the G#), he's absolutely pouring his heart and soul into the performance, and I find it really rewatchable.
I like David Haselhoff. I have to hand it to him here, he put in a very good effort. This song was, however a bit much for him. This is a tough one - try it yourself! He was reaching a bit beyond what he was really capable of at that time. But that is how we improve! I do the same thing. Pick a song I cannot quite get, work at it, after a couple mos I get it and I have extended my range, voice beyond what it was previously.
@DavidHasselhoff Deep virtual bow 🙏, Mr. Hasselhoff: One cannot sing that iconic song more beautifully or better. Nor can it be better acted. Really, I like David Hasselhoff. Acting in a theater requires some overacting. Not intented do be filmed in close up. But... His singing just isn´t good. he´s rhythmically off a lot. Sometimes flat. 0:48 momääääääääääänt sounds like a goat. His acting might not be too bad but his voice is just not good enough to carry a fairly difficult song like this. That´s why people criticize him ... Now you know ;-)
Theatre acting (in a large space anyway) requires the acting to be heightened and big, yes. It does not require overacting. The definition of overacting is that it is going beyond what is called for to the detriment of the work.
I love it. He invests all his body and soul, he hits the high notes, i feel the words, ok fast vibrato, who bloody cares, the voice is beautifully produced honest sound.
