My Dad bought a 7mm rem mag when they first came out. He had the gunsmith load him some hot loads and bore sight it. He took it to Wyoming, shot it one time, dropped a pronghorn at about 400 yards, one shot. After he got home, he took it to the range, fired two rounds, and said "That's enough". Missed his target by about five feet each time, nursed his bruised shoulder and black eye for all the sympathy he could get, put the rifle in the closet and never fired it again. That was 1971. He used a Mauser 7X57mm after that, until he passed away in 2011.
I shoot alot of 7mm mag. The one I bought as a kid kicks about like a marshmallow. The ruger m77 I got from my dad is a little swifter in the shoulder but not too bad. I am not the best to ask about recoil everything I shoot is huge!!!

Toward the end of this video, I put it on pause for to do some internet research on the subject of the .300 RUM. I come for to find out that factory loads generally push a 180-grain pill out at about 3, 300 feet per second or mach 3. That is about 150 feet per second faster than what a 180-grain factory load comes out of a .300 Weatherby. With a cannon like that, you might do well to fit it with a fixed power scope. It will take more and harder jolts than variables at a similar price. Also, the scope will get your mug up at a better angle to the stock. I suspect that the drop at the comb on that rifle was determined in view of a scope and that the irons were just mounted as back up. I recommend six power. When I was a young and callow fellow starting out in the Okanogan (land of my dreams), north central Washington State, circa 1971, I paid $75 plus the burdensome Washington sales tax for a Remington 1903A3 with a new civilian stock, new reblue, and a front blade and a rear peep. As time went on and I became more smart and more pecunious working like as slave at the infamous Biles Coleman Mill, I decided in the summer of '74 that I would like to have a telescopic sight. I researched the cost and feasibility of bent bolt and drilling and tapping and decided instead to trade the rifle in as it was toward a new Weatherby Mark V chambered in .300 Weatherby. I paid about $500 for the rifle and 3X-9X scope (already mounted), sling and swivels, four boxes of ammunition at about $20 per box and the burdensome Washington sales tax. At that time, a box of 20 30.06 loads was about $7. I very quickly figured out that the price difference per box was of no importance to me. The only difference that I could find to apply to me was that the Weatherby load would require more of a slower powder. A few days later I bought a $10 Lee Loader kit for .300 Weatherby, some 180 grain spitzers, and some DuPont IMR 4831. I have never bought a factory load for it since. A fortnight or so ago, I was looking for some trap loads and happened to see upon a shelf a box of non-Weatherby brand .300 Weatherby factory loads. The price was $120 (!). You could save the children's milk money and spend it for the children''s milk if you would just get into handloading. Just do not ask me where you are going to get the magnum grade large rifle primers in these modern times. I have not a clue.
I push 30 caliber 178 grains at 3450 fps out of a custom rifle I had biult back in the late 90s before the RUM was available. If I were in the market now it would be a 300 rum or one of the short mag options now avaliable. My rig is a wildcat so it's strictly a reloaders option. It's basically a 8mm remington mag, necked down to 30 caliber. No problem keeping 5 rounds in a 3 inch circle at 500 yards.
@@stevenmiller461 You probably got your number from advertising on one or more factory loads. My handloads are probably down into the 2,900's, but that is good enough for me. I think that the primary difference is that the .300 RUM is available in different rifles than the .300 Weatherby.

.300 RUM is my favorite rifle for the wood and the brush here in the States. The high FPS with 180's send shockwaves to the vitals, so even if you don't hit the heart when you're hitting lung broadsides, you still shock the heart and those deer and elk don't move far after being hit. I use my .30-06 for anything within 100 yards and my .300 RUM for anything out to 300 yards.
I shot a deer many years ago with my 300rum right in the heart , it’s eyes were bleeding out of its tear ducts , hydrostatic is definitely real with the 300 rum !
The filing on the scope rail isn’t bad it’s an older method that was used by gunsmith when setting a scope up that was not setting right in the rails because of size issues it won’t effect accuracy as long as the rails are any somewhat decent I would run them my rifle has a modified rail and after 600 rounds still holds zero
I really really really like that rifle. I have been one always like bigger caliber guns. I’m not able to do much hunting any more. But I have the Memories of my past it’s been over 65 + years. I have sold most of my rifles and shotguns. I still have a few left that I plan to keep along with my pistols. I really love watching all of your videos. God bless you and your family 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I really like that savage. I own several Savage's in many calibers. I have two rum's one in .300 and the other is .375 both on remington 700 magnum actions. Alot of people say they do not like muzzle brakes, both of my rum's wear one. Once you reach a certain threshold muzzle brakes become almost necessary. I weigh 250# and both .300 and .375 rum are incredibly jolting without the brake's on. Thanks for the video!!! P.S. the .375 rum is a 👹 monster and is very unpleasant without a muzzle brake, even with the brake I have never had someone shoot mine more than once, tis a man killer 🤣!!!
Someone may have already suggested this, but for a handloader, (if legal in your jurisdiction), load some old AP projectiles from the M1 Garand and stuff the full measure of 300 RUM powder for a mobile anti-body armor rig.
I do love my 300rum it is an elk stopper, mine love 210gr. I have a friend that loves the 165ers, and it s flat. I have seen elk get knocked over at many many fars. A brake is very very helpful.
It really looks like a rifle that "Pondoro" Taylor or Finn Aagard would take on a safari. Also reminds me of the Winchester model 70. Great group for iron sights!
I shot a wtd at about 250 yards with mine many years ago , hit it right in the heart, when I walked you to it it’s eyes were pertruding alittle out of the sockets and bleeding out of its tear ducts. Hydro-static shock is not a myth with the 300 rum . I was using 150gr Remington sirrocco bullets . I seen that calibre do absolutely insane things ! And those bullets are the best I ever used .
Beautiful rifle! I'm not much of a scope guy unless I'm shooting more than 500 yards, so I really like iron sights. I'm not a hunter, so I only shoot steel and paper.
Cheaper iron sights that's badass! Like I said I had trouble keeping scopes on mine but then that was over 20 years ago or better! The new equipment out now should be a lot better!! I still think you could be a thousand yard shooter! Two negative things I found in 300 rum it's so darn expensive! And number two it'll kick your butt from here to Sunday! But she's a keeper don't ever sell it! I regret selling mine

300rum the rifle you need when elephants are your choice of game
I appreciate you dropping the bag for these ammo videos 🙌🏾💰
Outer Impact makes a darn good rail, I've got one topping my Bergara B14 HMR 300WM.
Thanks for watching Larry
Lol buddy
Yup the 300 rum got a little spice on her but that's what makes it so special to shoot.
Great shooting
Cool gun interesting 🤨😀
Nice job with open sights and vicious recoil.
Beautiful piece of artillery 😄👌🏻
Good shooting, ready for squirrel hunting
I really like that savage. I own several Savage's in many calibers. I have two rum's one in .300 and the other is .375 both on remington 700 magnum actions. Alot of people say they do not like muzzle brakes, both of my rum's wear one. Once you reach a certain threshold muzzle brakes become almost necessary. I weigh 250# and both
.300 and .375 rum are incredibly jolting without the brake's on. Thanks for the video!!! P.S. the .375 rum is a 👹 monster and is very unpleasant without a muzzle brake, even with the brake I have never had someone shoot mine more than once, tis a man killer 🤣!!!
The !!!POWwww!!! must be insane with 300 RUM.
Beautiful rifle, who too. Likes those Barnes boolots. You need a good pair of binoculars and a spotting scope... 😊
Hi ...... love the videos , have been watching them for a while now , keep them coming
nice rifle. i like iron sights but old eyes makes it hard to see with them. Thank you for the video.
Someone may have already suggested this, but for a handloader, (if legal in your jurisdiction), load some old AP projectiles from the M1 Garand and stuff the full measure of 300 RUM powder for a mobile anti-body armor rig.
That sounds painful, probably best to send that through a gun with a brake so it doesn’t brake you.
This is the way
I do love my 300rum it is an elk stopper, mine love 210gr.
Great group for iron sights!
this guy sounds like he is about to sell me propane and propane accessories and I am here for it
Excellent shooting and consistent groups with irons.
That thing is dope great video
Yes 🐴💥... it is half the fun.
Nice group
That’s some pretty ammo! You know you dealing with an expensive round when the box opens from the top.
Great video brother! God is good! God bless!
Hey good for iron sights. Darrell
I can hear the lands and groves crying from here.
Kicking Boots Mates Great shooting, regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. Biloela, Qld Australia.
Those barnes are my go to for hunting
🦌🦌🦌
Did anyone notice the bee land on his shoulder? He got out of town in hurry when that round went off.🤣
Saw that!
I remember reading from one review writer that the 300 rum in a lightweight setup kicks like a Demonic mule, made me laugh big time lol
cheers
rob
dang! that thing put a 6 shot whoopin on you haha awesome! great video
The TTSX are awesome
Beautiful rifle! I'm not much of a scope guy unless I'm shooting more than 500 yards, so I really like iron sights. I'm not a hunter, so I only shoot steel and paper.
Yes sir that thing kills on both ends!!! Good luck with explaining the black eye to the wifey!!!
😆😆😆
Shooting well with iron sights. The RUM is a beast. I hunt with a lad that has one. Heck of a cartridge.
💪💪
If Hank Hill traded in all his propane and propane accessories for guns and gun accessories! WHO_TEE_WHO is King of the Hill!
accurate rifle,,, good groups without glass much aided by the sled
Good shooting, WTW. I shoot 45-70 when I wanna get kicked by a mule; too set in my ways to switch to 300 RUM.
I'll be getting a Remington 700 Long Range in that beast of a round shortly :)
Nice!
Thank you sir! Love the content! Keep it up!
Muzzle break, mercury recoil rod, free float that barrel and replace that horrendous trigger and butt pad. It will be the best gun you own!
1:31
Dear god he can’t be stopped.
Never figured the 300rum but I did fire my friends 338rum. All I can say is you are definitely not expecting the recoil they produce. Great video
You are the king of calibers I have never heard of. Oh wait, Remington Ultra Mag. Hmm, yep never heard of it lol. Nice gun, and man it packs a punch!
😆😆😆
FOr when the .300 Weatherby seems mild....!
Nice shooting Whotee! Dont you just love the 300RUM!
Way to go!!! You're more of a man than I am shooting a caliber that size! Great video!
Great video as usual and thank heavens that it’s your shoulder taking the punishment 😂
Second most obnoxious report on a rifle at the range for me was a .300 RUM with a brake. The most obnoxious by a large margin was a 338-378 Weatherby. 50 bmg is pleasant by comparison, at least it's a nice throaty boom.
That's a sweet gun buddy , I love mine . Sucks they are so expensive to shoot , I thought 20 bucks a box back In 2000 was expensive, I should have bought a bunch back then lol
I'm old. I don't hunt anymore. When I did I found iron sights preferably to scopes inside 100 yards. Much better for moving targets
👍👍🦌🦌🦌
Told you that was going to hurt had one for Years love it, now go get you some Bengay! There has never been anything cheap about these units
That’s not bad at all , sights good enough you know where to hold nice 👍 plus this a good looking rifle 😊
Dang son 200 for two boxes ?? Federal needs to hook our boy up with a sponsorship!!!
Yes they do
Long distance iron shooting Who!!! The perfect rifle! 🇺🇸
No scope needed!
Excellent all around cartridge if you can handle a little recoil
Fellers and fellettes!!! 6:40 🤣🤣🤣
Oh yea this is going to be a good one
💪💪
Good shooting. Little rough on cheek and teeth. LOL 😆
What a Rifle!! A real Mans Weapon!
💪💪
I love listening to Hank Hill, you got a new sub my man.
I felt the recoil from here
😆😆😆
