Our Spotlight is on this 2016 Tesla Model S 85D. A pre-facelift luxury electric vehicle, this Model S gives us our first taste of the Tesla brand. We go over as much as we can on this episode to explain everything about this car, including the things that make Tesla unique, and some of the impressions we got as a first-time Tesla driver. We discuss the different kWh battery options for this generation along with the changes that have occured and will occur with the Model S. We go around the exterior of the vehicle including the HID headlights, retractable door handles, power folding mirrors, backup camera, front and rear parking sensors, Tesla's proprietary charging port, the trunk and the frunk.
We spend time on the inside of the Model S to discuss how the interior of it differs from other vehicles we've driven on TestDrive including the 12.3" cluster computer screen, 17" infotainment screen, lack of physical buttons, and the overall design of the car. We spend some time talking about the software and user interface of Tesla's infotainment system and how it really is a powerful gaming PC on wheels. Some of the unique functionality like near infinite driver memory options, built-in HomeLink, or the sunroof controls through the steering wheel.
We then take the 2016 Tesla Model S 85D on a comprehensive real-world driving test to see how this vehicle handles, performs, and drives. We discuss the battery charge and how much range the vehicle gets, along with the overall performance of this non-Performance Tesla. We figure out why people love their Teslas so much, and what the future might hold for electric vehicles and cars in general after spending a week with this Model S.
We wrap up our full tour and review with a buyer's guide of things to look for when buying a Model S, including some of the common problems owners have reported, and issues or maintenance required, and recalls that may be pending on these vehicles.

I bought a 2015 S85D from Tesla in April 2019, with 12,004 miles. It was a returned 3 year lease and felt like a brand new car. At that time, it came with a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty starting from my delivery date, free supercharging and free premium connectivity. 19” wheels, Technology Upgrade with Autopilot 1.0, all heated seats, premium sound system with subwoofer, and panoramic sunroof. Best part was the price, about 60% of the sticker price. I LOVE it.

13:15 How's headroom space? From this shot your head looks very close to the sunroof.
    Great review also, very insightful!

Personally I felt the seat didn’t lower enough for my liking, felt like I was in a Lincoln which usually have very high seats. Headroom wasn’t bad, unfortunately a lot of executive cars are shrinking their interior spaces like this now a days.

There's no limit of using the J1772 adapter to charge the Tesla. The adapter supports up to 19kW. Most home charging solutions are under 48A which is around 10kW or less.

Great to see a review of an older Model S. Overall they seem to be holding up well. I did see some rust on a battery cover that Gruber Engineering took apart, but this was an early model which had spent a lot of time on the Cali coast. So a new Model 3 vs a preloved Model S?

I'm in a 2019 Model 3 this week, very interesting to have them back to back, similar pricing in the used market for what I drove. Gives people some options!

New ones would have updated tech at least, I found the infotainment on this was really slow and likely has only gotten worse in the years since we drove one of these.

    What’s the creaking

That’s the leather of a seat rubbing against the leather arm rest. I ended up putting something between it after filming.

The 85D accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 second, not 3.8…

It's a beautiful looking vehicle, but battery technology is not yet green and clean. Electric vehicles do not reduce CO2 emissions and CO2 emissions are good, not bad. If we could triple atmospheric CO2 levels deserts would bloom because adding more CO2 to our atmosphere makes plants grow bigger, faster, and more resistant to drought. None of the tiny trace gases like CO2 (0.04% of atmosphere) have any measurable influence on temperature. Earth is kept warm by our total planetary atmospheric pressure, not by any greenhouse effect. That is why mountain tops are always colder than valley floors. Higher air pressure causes higher temperatures. The greenhouse gas hypothesis was never proven despite all the hype and junk science for hire claiming CO2 controls climate. Over the past 420 million years, carbon dioxide levels have fluctuated between 300 and 2,200 parts per million, yet life flourished. There is no climate crisis and electric cars will only be green and efficient when batteries are cheaper, cause less pollution to manufacture, recharge much faster, last longer, and can hold more energy. Canada is not burning up, and neither is the USA. Do not believe all the hysteria masquerading as science. Carbon is not evil because it is us. We are all 18.5% carbon by weight.

@@fatalbert3633 Watch "Climate Catholicism and Greenhouse Dreams" on UA-cam. George Orwell was right about groupthink. Our world has gone mad and our agenda seems to be to get us all into nuclear war by trying to be the policeman of the world and at the same time skyrocket the cost of food by banning the energy systems that are actually efficient and cost-effective and promoting silly contraptions like wind and solar which amount to throwing money down a storm drain. We have record snow and cold, yet Al Gore and Joe Biden claim all that cold is the result of the Earth burning up. Please remember, *food = energy and energy = food*. The higher the cost of energy the higher the cost of food. The renewable energy fad has starved millions of people to death worldwide, and the biofuel hoax is the greatest crime against humanity and the environment of the 21st century. If you do not like the current cost of food and housing, then blame Al Gore first and US militarism second.

@@UKTonyMagill Hardly. I believe in evidence-based science, not in politics, and rigging our perception of world history to suit a flawed premise. Scare the cattle is the internal morro of the climate fear mongers. Our climate is always changing and often inconvenient. CO2 has little to do with climate and everything to do with us being alive. No CO2 means an Earth as barren as our moon.
