Oh yeah! I'm a minimalist and don't have any emotional ties to stuff. I have not only decluttered my surroundings but have also cleared out toxic people from my life.
mi fa so la Good for you! Disentangling from toxic relationships is necessary for good emotional, psychological, and spiritual health. Physical health too because it decreases stress.
I'm in the final stages of downsizing and decluttering. I'm moving from an 1875 sq ft 4 bedroom house to an 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment at the end of September. It has taken 3 years to pare down a 33 year accumulation. Donate, sell, recycle and trash.
I totally agree with the concept of removing clutter by category, it is nowhere near as daunting as throwing everything in a pile, that to me is too overwhelming, little by little suits me, I think people get confused with organising and clearing clutter, to buy storage boxes, baskets etc, to store stuff in when really they are simply hiding clutter away, and once it’s gone, don’t buy something else, if you clear half your drawers and cupboards get rid of them so you don’t fill them up, enjoy the open spaces you create, xx
Good morning Margaret. Great video and I agree that we each need to find the best way to clear and simplify for ourselves. I have spent several hours over the past few days clearing digital photos (more to come today). They were already organized by chronological events. Hence, it was more about clearing to prepare to transfer the photos to a separate hard dive. It has been so emotional. The passage of time. The loss of family. The loss of me in a way. Good thing that the songs “The way we were” or “Those were the days, my friend” were not playing. I would have been a wreck.
Thanks again Margaret. I have breakfast with you there every morning. I will get going on decluttering very soon. You are a darling, sweet lady. Thanks for being there♥️.
Wow, your top and necklace looks so lovely on you. Really is so pretty. Have a great day. Take care from Indiana 😊😊😁. When one of my friends got divorced, I had a divorce party for her at her home, as I helped her pack her stuff up to move out. We had pleasant time on a day that could be a bit sad. The party and me being there made it better for her. She thanked me for being there with her, and having food, as it made the packing process better. I even got her a divorce cake and had the bakery put Freedom on top. She was in a 27 year abusive marriage. Her ex was just plain mean to her and it was just awful for her. He blamed her friends for her filing for divorce and he is a narcissist. He is so self centered. She is in a better place now and moved on and her ex is not happy about that. Oh well.
My boyfriend and I are in the middle of downsizing. My house is small and we both have a lot of stuff from previous larger homes. We are following the Maria Kondo method. So far it is working really well. We don't always hold everything (which you don't have to) as we know a lot of stuff that we no longer want or need. It is a very freeing experience. It was a rough start but now we are almost at the end of it and everything we have left is what we really want. The extra space is wonderful. Have a good day all the sisters out there!
I’ve kept some clothing that are to small in the hopes that I’ll lose that extra pounds some day. Sound familiar? Decluttered my closet and was able to finally say “You do not give me joy!! My husband thought I was crazy. We were both laughing. It really does give you a good feeling. Thanks for your thoughts. Linda
I have downsized substantially but even before I did I didn't have clutter. Even in bigger space with more things I didn't have clutter. I did Marie Kondo my clothes closet & dresser drawers. But she even said if you're going to use it or has meaning for you keep it; at least I saw this in her segments on Netflix. The things we save are all relative to who we are as a culture & in our personalities. Downsizing works for me. But it's not relevant to everyone. There's nothing wrong with having collections of things or living bigger. It is about what one wants & is comfortable with. We don't all have to downsize or simplify. There are those I know who are very happy in big homes with their stuff. If someone is happy in clutter it's their clutter. I have simplified, organized and changed things in my life. It's not for everyone. It's not necessary. For me keeping what I use, keeping what I cherish is important to me. I've never liked clutter and am a stickler for neatness. I have found I like more creature comforts now as I call them around me. I like comfy & accessible. I like having less to have less to clean. Then there's what I changed & adjusted for my physical abilities. It's recommended that the elderly not have throw rugs which can be a danger. I like throw rugs & I hope I don't regret it. I did have to move them when I broke bones in my ankle and had cast & huge boot. They're back in place. I know this is a great topic and many of us need help with it or look for tips in organizing and simplifying. I enjoy watching these videos. Thank you Margaret. 💝
I'm in the middle of a whole house renovation and as each room gets completed, I am able to put back into it only those things that I want to have in there. No stuff in closets for "some day," or "just in case!" When I walk into the completed rooms now they look almost minimal, but they are ordered and lovely and I feel calm and in control of my home and my life. Helena
Thank you Margaret for bringing up this subject. The Marie Kondo way help me personally by allowing me to detach from 99% of my stuff the only area I’m still working on is the sentimental part. I have 40 years of cards from when my children were born, cards from them, and 32 yrs of binders and papers from when I homeschooled my 3 children for ten years. I did throw away some but it was such a wonderful time in our lives it’s difficult for me. I’ve bern working on it for years. Photos. I’m not too tech savvy so I feel stuck in knowing how to digitize etc. Little by little I know it will happen. I love the quote about if we’re holding on to the past or future we are not living in the present. That will help me to move forward with this paralyzing part of my life. Thank you
Just saw this as new fan of yours over last year. I have Covid, still on isolation;in two bedroom with nice bathroom in between. I was planing to clean out a closet do to so much time in bedroom. I now have spurts of energy. Also I am turning 70 in less than 2 weeks. So down sizing I shall progress. Thank you, Margret, from new friend, Kelly
Taking a break from cleaning , and thought I'd watch your latest video. And look at you - all in white, like and Angel ! Beautiful ! Not everyone can wear white. Not me that's for sure, I'm too warm. But just too see you refreshed me -and so it's back to cleaning and airing out-- and- a little organizing and declutter. Love you Margaret!
I love your videos. I am down sizing in preparation to selling my house and then moving to Cuenca, Ecuador. Looking to live a more meaningful and simpler life.
I am of the opposite point of view..I find when people "de-clutter" they wind up purchasing "replacements"..ESPECIALLY in clothes and accessories..and a few "things" to make their space look cozy..as long as I have the space..without looking like a hoarder...I am keeping my things..this will STOP me from "adding" more things...I only get rid of things that don't fit or not age appropriate,or don't work...just my thoughts...
Margaret, I love you in the white blouse. It goes so well with the freshwater pearls. Very simple. Very classy. I am guessing the blouse is Swiss, but whatever it is it looks great on you.
I really need to go thru my stuff again. I’m currently going thru my closest. But the decluttering process will have to wait until my back has healed more and I can pick up items heavier than 10 lbs. I do have quite a bit of stuff to get rid of so my children don’t have. They have NO clue what is of value. I’m sitting outside drinking my iced coffee. Not many birds this morning. Very foggy can barely make out the house across the street. Hope everyone has a great day!!
Georgiann Maloney. I live in Northern California. One son 8 hr north in Oregon and the other in Indianapolis. The one in OR may come down in December but I doubt it.
As a Taurus, I can tell you that most of my possessions "bring me joy". I wish I could take everything with me when I leave this dimension. Lol. I will force myself to declutter, though. The things most important to me are my photos, collectables, and art. Thank you for another important topic.
I reach the age 44 years this year. I could feel the menopausal period symptoms and with that I know that I have more push on my minimalist ways. I started in the last month last year to minimize the things I own so now my things are lesser than I had before and it did help a lot. I want to push further so perhaps by next year I will have lesser than I have now. It is so true it helps a lot specially at the time when our body is not as active as it was before and we have to take really good care of our health and our time is so limited to reach those dreams. Thanks for talking about minimalism. I know there are many people out there who does not know a thing about it and this attitude and life style has to be spread for a better world as it also help give mother earth a time using less is a key to help the environment.
Take a ruthless approach and take out all the things you know you don’t want without having to think much; then go back through with the Konmari or another method? Themessyminimalist has a video called “rage purge” here on UA-cam that is pretty great for anyone just fed up with their stuff.
Just found this great herbal tea , Ginger and Turmeric tea, taste great and is also healthy. Here in the US it is sold by Trader Joe,s. Thanks for your video about clutter, I decluttered regularly, makes me feel good, now I do not have a lot of stuff to declutter anymore, just because I do not buy a lot of stuff , took me a while . Less things are better, no clutter in your head! Lol
