Its a cultural thing - the US is overwhelmingly inward-looking while the EU (and other places) encouarges internationalism. (You cannot simply blame being more physically isolated than other countries as Australians and other far more distanced places do not have the same problem as a well-known characteristic.)

I mean, Europe is also very eurocentric in what they teach... So with for example History it's like 80% European History, 10% Asian and 10% American pretty much... But because of colonialism we had our grubby hands all over the world which makes European history as well as geography involve a lot more of the world...

It is not just cultural, it has a lot to do with the education system. Good education, that should be free, is expensive in the US. Plus they brainwash kids into believeing that the US are the best country in the world. Also kids are told in school that money is the end of all thing, while all it is just a tool, and because of that they do not build the culture of travelling and knowing other cultures because they do not evenbtake enough hollidays to educate themselves about the world

The point the make is that most of these question simply check fact knowledge and that is related to education.
Still there are smart and less smart people and often but not always that plays along (correlate) with education.

People have phones and America has lots of different cultures and people so I don’t believe it’s a culture thing it’s just that they pick less knowledgeable people on the American side I feel with these things

Again...ohh ,on those videos they select the bad answers....well, those are too many and too terrible answers to find comfort in the thought that there must have been the right answers too... And not just the middle of the USA but right in Central Square NY.
And not just the educational system, but the individual's lack of brain activity like thinking and reasoning

We had to learn every country and capital in primary school. That's not about being smart. Every kid, including the dumb ones, has to learn that here. Most people forget a lot, but ask any 12 year old here and they'll blurt out every country you point at on a map.

Minute 14:26 - That's an excuse. We study South American and African and Austrialian countries and Asian countries at school We don't study only the country we have near us in Europe.
It's simply a different approach in educational system. Our schools gives value to geography and history of the of the entire world instead of focusing on our own country or continent

    • @NicholasCorvin
      @NicholasCorvin Місяць тому +2

*Absolutely. Also there's a thing called "general education". You simply learn a whole lotta things, before you dive into one special direction.....plus you'll never stop learning, 'cause there are still things you don't know....* ⬅️🤔

@@NicholasCorvin That's pretty much what I wrote in my comment, though you phrased it better.
I want to say it was grade 7 or 8, where we had a whole term where we focused on US history and North American geography.
The test with the states was a pain, and made me miss when we did the counties of Sweden back in 3rd or 4th grade (because we have like 20 or something, so it was easier to remember. Then again, we also had the extra of the county animal 😅)

Minute 4:17 - I always find confusing when you say smart talking about what people KNOW. That is knowledge and education, not smartness and intelligence. I think Amaricans are as smart as everyone else; they simply have a less general education and a more spcifical and focused education
This means that when you ask to Americans vs European quiestions about geography or world history (not specific European or American history), it appears that European are "smarter" but they simply have better educational system

  • @ElunedLaine

Intelligence has nothing to do with knowledge. That said, intelligent people are usually more curious and want to learn more. Nowadays, information is readily available to hundreds of millions of people, so there aren't many excuses if they don't know really basic stuff.

  • @riccardocoletta2398
    @riccardocoletta2398 Місяць тому +8

Minute 13:24 - We know more geography because for 2 full years, from 13 to 14 years old, we study ALL the countries of the world. Each country has from 2 to 4 pages on our geography book with basic information: natural structure (rivers, mountains, seas, lakes and so on), political organization, main incomes, most important historical fact
This is the only reason we know geography better than Americans, because we study it better in school

    • @lina9535
      @lina9535 Місяць тому

      Absolutely.
I remember we had this game on the computer (in like 6th-7th grade) that my class played almost religiously on breaks (because we were competitive little sh*ts 😂)
It still exists, but is on another webpage (back then it was its own thing. Like the minigame with the dino when you don't have internet).
Anyway, I don't remember if it was Europe only or if that was the one we just happened to focus on.
But it showed a blank map of Europe, and you picked either capitals or countries.
Then you'd get the name at the top of the screen (either a capital or a country) and you had to click on the map where it was.
It was so much fun. Though I always got confused with Slovenia and Slovakia. I still switch them to this day.
I could have them right and before checking I'll be like "no... it's probably the other way around."
Like how some people do it with Sweden and Switzerland 😂

I don't remember if we used knives (I'm a Swede), we might 😅
But I remember being so confused about American "snow days".
Like... one day in 11th grade, I walked through waist high snow (2011) on my way to school (because I was stubborn in which way to take).
Got to school a bit late, in white pants. 30 minutes later the snow had fully melted and I could enjoy my black pants.
Like... they used to let a little snow stop them from going to school? Even though many places had busses to take them?
I walked to school in a snow storm when I was 9 😂

I’m from Latvia and we had to learn the capital city of every country and what other countries they border with etc. Also the longest rivers, highest mountains, deepest lakes etc etc. We had to memorise it all and pass tests about it. And many of those facts we will remember because of that.

The US isn't dumb per say, it is more they are too insular. Many US folks don't travel abroad, US News focuses solely on the US, Schools teach only US history, etc. ... the people could learn but they are never exposed to the information.
10:30 Yeah Sydney is the most known but not the capital.
India was second to China for decades, then India passed... the 2 of them combined are about 1/4 of the world so.... I... might have got that wrong. With a couple seconds to think I knew but in the "heat of the game..."
It all depends on what you experience. Some people have great memories. Some are very logical thinkers and therefore great problem solvers... neither of those help if you never heard of something before.

  • @lina9535

Nah, we're not good at geography because we're closer to other countries.
It's included in the curriculum. "Oh we're doing South America today, these are the countries."
In history class: "Okay, the countries involved in X were Z and Y."
In Sweden, we like something you could call "general knowledge", it's usually broader in regards to whatever it is you're studying.
Say you want to focus on history. Up to finishing 9th grade you have the "general knowledge". After that you might want to focus on US history or Egyptian history. You already have some of the base foundation for it.
Wheras the US is pretty.... US-centric.
Don't get me wrong we learn about the 20-ish countys of Sweden, but we do cover the 50 states as well when we're learning about the US. We might not go into super specific details though.
It's not like I'd go around asking Americans to tell me about the 100-year war that we had here.

The dumb / smart debate is quite sterile.
The thing is really how much your school system, and later your society as a whole, values knowledge of a great variety of topics and how much teaching time it will give them.
For a few decades, 14 yo kids in france have had a mandatory class that is called "history of arts" and teaches them how famous art pieces came to be, how arts evolve and so on.
Back in my days it was more classical stuff like Latin or Greek, that still exist but you have more options to choose from, and highschoolers still have a mandatory 1 year of philosophy, which really depends on your teacher's will to teach it at a basic level.

Everyone is smart in their own field, I am british but I certainly don't believe that all Americans are dumb at all. Those YT videos where someone interviews random Americans trying to prove that young Americans can't answer simply questions are most fixed, out of every 100 people that are interviewed, then would only show the two people who could not answer the simple questions.

Then we have the choice of German, French or Spanish starting in like... grade 6.

Btw.: i think these types of videos are really also "dumb" because there are just a handful of random people where you have now clue how representative they are, what kind of education they have, nothing. Like you could go to Harvard to grab people for the US and then go to the "slums" in another country and grab a McDonalds worker or whatever and then compare them.
And its not like those other videos where random people are interviewed on the streets for fun, because the title here kinda makes it sound as if its somehow representative-

We Europeans are polyglot we Europeans travel a lot in and outside of Europe more than USA people( percentage of people having passports proves it USA only 48% while most of Europeans it’s 89% or more). Also Europeans education is free while USA citizens go bankrupt trying to get even a decent education. Another factor European people are more open to experience and open minded than USA citizens. Most Europeans are more of perfectionist than USA citizens when it comes to their education. So it’s true that Europeans are more highly educated worldly than USA citizens.
