Why We Chose the Arctic Fox 27-5L Fifth Wheel

  • We did it! We bought a new RV, the Arctic Fox 27-5L to continue our full-time RV travels. In this video we discuss why we choose the Arctic Fox and what we like about it so far. Our new Fifth Wheel is only 29' long, so it was quite the downsize for us and we couldn't be happier.

    My wife and our two dogs have traveled in our 2020 Arctic Fox, Model 1150 truck camper through 25 States, over 40 campgrounds, 8 National Parks, and countless back roads and interstates over the last year and it has performed FLAWLESSLEY! Love you Northwood Manufacturing! We appreciate you!

    Thank you for sharing your new purchase with us. From Arctic Fox owner I believe you will be happy with the purchase. Our prior Northwood fifth wheel was a Fox Mountain and since 2016 we have owned Arctic Fox 35-5z and love it. We also never installed solar due to low wattage wiring. Enjoy and happy travels

      Glad to hear you’re happy with yours. Its reputation among owners was one of the reasons we chose it. SEAN is going to upgrade the wiring as well and add an inverter.

    A good deal for an RV investment involves energy efficiency and functionality. The LED lighting, the ceiling fan that aids in the lesser usage of the air-conditioning and dual power fridge all help with efficiency. That bedroom space and the toilet almost resemble a residential. The mirror with lights is a good extra too.

    Very nice unit! We have a 2007 Excel 5th Wheel we’ve put many thousands of miles on and I just love it. I call it my condo on wheels but sometimes we look at small trailers like Scamp or Casita to just go boondock in for a few days near our home base. We love camping but I am not a full timer like you guys. Best to you both and thank you for your videos!

    I love the floor plan. We have the same exact layout in out 1995 Fleetwood. It is great that you can function with the slide in if needed. Being able to access almost everything that you need while traveling down the road ( Expert the panty ). When we buy another rig someday, it will probably be the exact floor plan. So functional. Very happy 29-5T owners here. Buying another rig soon and it will *not* be an AF. For us, when we started long term, we gutted the interior and got rid of all the soul sucking brown and the uncomfortable furniture. The new AFs are still very dark, look very dated inside and seem not to utilize space very well. I have re worked much of the storage in our rig ( there is an easy fix to double the capacity of your pantry) so we can now hold a lot more but the tipping point for us is the tiny fridge. 15+ cu ft fridges are becoming the norm, something the good folks at Northwood are ignoring. Lastly, the lack of presence in the east side of NA is concerning. We are not particularly happy about this and we think Northwood has dropped the ball. Too bad. Glad you are enjoying the 27 5T. With some changes, this would be the rig we would be pulling.

    I was so waiting for this video. You all are FT RVers and do a lot of research so I knew you would make a great choice. I’m still in sticks and bricks waiting for my son to graduate soon and I’m selling my house and all. I’ve been waiting for so long for this, I’ve always traveled but once I got pregnant I settled down for my son so that he had stability. Ive always been a single mom, my concern for RV choices is safety. I’ve been looking mainly at Class A and C , my caution about 5ers is that I need to get out of the RV and into the truck when there is a safety issue outside. I love 5ers because they are big and spacious great for full-time. Love your Artic Fox, can’t wait to see the solar install. Thank you! Safe travels, always look forward to your videos even if I don’t comment. 😊

      Best of luck to you! I’ve (Julie) never felt unsafe, and Sean leaves on business trips quite often. I think it all goes back to research and planning where you stay. I have a solo female friend who has a Fifth Wheel and another with a travel trailer and have said the same. However, there are good Class A & C options too.

      Chickery's Travels Thanks for the reply. Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps in the decision making. I want to
      Boondock 90% of the time, I love fishing and I actually make flies as a hobby so the outdoors is my calling. I live in Miami (Doral) FL so I’ve experienced the snowbirds here all my life but I want to head north and enjoy the snow too, Artic Fox would be great for that.
      Tie up my kayaks to the RV and go. ❤️

    I bought an AF 22h new in 2000 and used it a lot until 2018 and other than a new roof in 2015 it was flawless. Not having a dealer within 200 miles was an issue as I needed cover for the front window. I call the dealers in my state and could even get a call back. The manufacturer would not sell me the part directly so I sold the AF and bought a Lance. I was not aware Lance sold to Rev and that is another story. All in all I think the AF is probably the last descent RV manufacture left. You made a good choice. Good luck and have fun.

    We also have the 27-5L (since MAR '18). Our shower problem was leaking under the door as the silicone piece was not installed. Dealer took care of it immediately, but the bottom of the door wasn't parallel to the base. I had a heating and a/c shop make a deflector (as you have on a home shower door) that I glued to the door that deflects the water so it can't flow out the door opening..

We spent the winter in ours all winter in Montana during winter 2016. Arctic Fox is a great choice. We looked at them before deciding on a Outdoors RV Mfg. Timber Ridge 24RKS. Both are very well made and insulated . We also have thermo pane windows , 80 gallon fresh water tank ( which is almost unheard of in a 24 foot travel trailer ) 2 - 40 gallon grey water tanks and a 40 gallon black tank.
    Like you guys , we wanted to stay under 30 feet in order to be able to fit in more places , and I didn't want to drag a big trailer through big cities.
    Good luck with your new Home guys.

    Remember you get what you pay for . Think an $ 19,000 5th Wheel won’t have any problems ? You will learn the cheaper you buy the more problems you will have .
    Take it from a person who have RV for full time for 24 years now . You have no idea what you are in for. Yes $ 19,000 maybe sound great and great price I guarantee within 2 years you will have spent. $ 7-14,000 on repairs outside of warranty items, probably more.
    First of a 5th Wheel at this cost will have Minimal insulation. This means this RV
    Will need to be kept above freezing temps. If you were to live in this in Montana or Minnesota during the winter , you would have dozens of problems, I have seen
    People were told it’s great in Winter, it’s in the shops more in the winter then it is outside. This type of RV needs to be down in Arizona , Texas or Florida in Winter .
    Just some good advice to save you time , money and headaches.

      Not really sure why you are mentioning that here? Arctic Fox is not $19,000...try $59,000. They are the industry leader in insulation and come equipped with heated bays in their 4 season units.

    I found people on UA-cam with the same problem and making their own fixes, but Norcold has started selling the door hinge plate and even replacement doors on Amazon they will even direct you there if like us you call to complain about your door falling off . You won’t know about the problem until it’s to late, so save some grief and money order the hinge plate from Amazon easy install only need a screw driver. Better to fix now than to have to buy the hinge plate and a new door as we did. Once you see the cheap easy fix, your feelings about Norcold will be like mine.

      It was leaking around the bottom of the shower. At the dealership, they re-caulked and we continued to have problems. After that we not only re-caulked, but added a plastic "splash shield" on the interior part of the door. There is a post on the Arctic Fox Owner's Group on FB that shows how people solved the problem.

    I’ve been looking at the 27-5L too. But I’m wondering if the fridge will be too small for me. I don’t use sugar, just fruit or a bit of honey in cooking. So I’m wondering if the fridge will do when I’m buying in bulk. Of course I end up freezing oranges, lemons, limes, herbs, and nuts, and I only have a fridge about that big now. But I like swelling beans, chickpeas, and so on, and then sprouting them before I use them. Even though I’m using sealer jars for that, I was thinking it would be nice to have the double fridge with more space. Looking at the pantry, I thought I may be able to put a mini fridge and mini freezer in there, because it looks like the space may be much the same as for the fridge. But then I’d need wall outlets close by. And maybe I’d have to drill some inconspicuous holes in the side of the pantry to let the plug cords through to the outlets. Do you think that would work?
    Then the other big concern I have is the storage room underneath. I have a shop vac that I don’t want to get rid of, some books and tote boxes with stuff I want to keep, and I don’t know if I’m going to be able to keep them in there. As far as the water tanks go, the 27-5L and the 29-5K have the largest tanks of all the Arctic Fox models. And the net carrying capacity is the best for them too. I was wanting to have an RV with around 30 ft and the 27- 5L is perfect in that respect. But the 29-5K is almost 6 feet longer. The dealer said it’s going to need more room for a turn at a corner on the road which concerns me, but then it has way more carrying space underneath on the slide through. I don’t know if I’ll need it all, but then I would know for sure that I wouldn’t have to let go of my stuff in tote boxes that means a lot to me. The dealer doesn’t have the 27-5L in yet, and the Northwood Mfg video isn’t showing the storage space well enough underneath the RV. It would be nice to see a picture. sdzuki@icloud.com

    • @ChickerysTravels
      @ChickerysTravels  3 роки тому +1

      There is an outlet close to the pantry. I think the biggest issue would be the weight of a fridge/freezer in there, but it might work. We felt like the underneath storage was adequate for our needs, but I know some people complain it is too small. We have so much stuffed in ours you wouldn't be able to get a feel for it from a photo. Check out the online video tours that Northwood has on their YT channel. It might show the underneath storage.

      Thaank you so much for your reply! Mike McKean @ Bish’s RV’s shows the slide through very well on his 2022 showing of the 27-5L. It looks pretty good.The water space on the 27-5L and the 29-5K are comparable, and have the most space compared to the other Arctic Fox RV’s, period. And the net carrying weight for both of them is very good also.I like the additional space on the 29-RK but I’m not too keen on the additional weight, and the fact that it’s 6 feet longer; especially if I decide to brave some backroads, or haul it through some bad weather. The 27-5L doesn’t have a washer/ dryer, but if you look on Wayfair you can get a good price on a DIY winding Wonder washer for clothing, and other laundry. You add the water, and T of soap. Then you wind the handle for 2 min. Do the same (minus soap) to rinse. Then without water, spin to wring out the clothes. It’s only the size of a water bucket. You Tube has some presentations from users. I also got a Russel Stover salad spinner to wring out clothing, but I don’t know if I’ll need it. You can get Turkish Beach Towels, bath towels, T - Towels , and dish cloths, off of Amazon. They have a looser weave, and are less bulky to wash than our North American type towels. Amazon also carries some neat stand up drying racks. I’m not selling them chuckle. Anna

    This question is somewhat dated for you guys but it is specifically about the size of the shower in the 2021 Artic Fox 27-5l - we looking at the 27-5l vs the 2021 Grand Design Reflection 310rls which has a larger shower - Is the Artic Fox shower big enough to be comfortable to use becuase you can not find any specs on its size vs the reflection shower which is 30 x 48

    I’m getting very close to buying a 5th wheel to start FT rving but I’m a little concerned about duel axles vs triple axles. When I look at triple axle most are around 15k dry weight on the heavy end of the scale with a max of around 20k loaded which is within the axles of 21k. The double axle trailer that are solid type are pushing 12 to 13k dry weight leaving only 1 or 2k for stuff. I seen one that was 13k and a GVW showing like 16k but that’s 2k over the axles weight. This is what concern me. I realize that when hooked up to truck some of the weight is transferred but when parked which I would think is more time then hooked upped time isn’t the overall weight (say 16k) being put on just the 2 axles which are only rated 14k. The last thing I want to do is overload the RV to cause damage to it. Any idea or comment on my thinking?

    • @ChickerysTravels
      @ChickerysTravels  5 років тому

      You are correct that the truck will take some of the weight. Also, when you are parked, the leveling jacks will also take weight off the axles. I am not advocating for you to exceed the rated weight capacity of the RV, but all of the weight will not be on the axles when hooked up or when parked. Great thought process. Many people do not consider the axle rating. Also, sorry for the late reply, this comment somehow ended up in spam.
