Despite how good digital is, I still miss analog. If a digital TV signal is weak, then you get a choppy picture or no picture at all. If an analog TV signal is weak, then you get a snowy picture. It is way easier for me to follow what's happening on the TV screen with a snowy picture than a choppy picture or no picture at all. Also, I am a nostalgic person, so I have an interest in older items.
Yeah that's what I was thinking instead of getting a no signal you can still watch the dang thing damn I hate this time I live in or taking everything away from us
I would not call that going out with a whimper. That was actually a classy send-off to the end of an era. Most American channels simply pulled the plug just to get the dumb thing over with.
I miss the old analog tv signals. With the new digital signals if I don't have a good signal then the picture goes black or cuts in and out. At least with the old signal I could at least see the picture even if the picture was snowy. "better than a black screen or it cutting in and out" Now I can not even watch the show I want to watch if my signal drops.
It's because you Americans have your own digital television standard (ATSC). And this standard is very unstable compared to the European or Chinese standard.
It’s sad for analog to go but the best part about this is this news channel gave tribute to analog tv by playing the star spangled banner before they signed off thank you analog tv for 56 years of nostalgia
It's been many years since I saw a station go off of the air for the night, but they usually did stuff like that. Then the patriotic video was followed by beeeeeeeeeeeeeee...... waking you up if you fell asleep....
Awesome Ben! End of the analog era caught in historic real time. I moved here to Madison only 2 years ago so I think I missed this on channel 3. Did this broadcast occur on June 12th 2009 also? The Date is important to this historic event:)
Being the fact that i was to young to experience vhs at 2004 (we're too broke to buy vhs back then), its nice to see that atleast i have analog to feel nostalgic about
Now with everyone streaming Netflix and UA-cam and Hulu and Amazon and all the others, how long do you think it will be before digital over-the-air broadcasting is discontinued?
Low power TV, AFIAK is still allowed to use analog (on some UHF channels not affected by the spectrum auction). These are often repeaters of digital channels or indie or low budget religious stations.
Because it looks awful and all the analog systems at television stations were becoming aged and outdated. Besides you can't just ask the FCC to bring back a 9-year-old change.
What Other Stations Used the National Anthem And Recycled Sign-Ons As The 6/12/09 Analog Switch-Over? All I can remember is WISC, WKOW and WMTV in Madison, WI, KDKA in Pittsburgh, PA (High Flight), WFMY and WGHP in Greensboro, NC, WRTV in Indianapolis, IN, KVLT, WDAY/WDAZ/KMCY (WDAZ Used An Unknown Version of ATB, However WDAY and KMCY Used The 80's ATB Video) and KXJB/KXJD (Used An Unknown Version Of ATB) in Fargo/Grand Forks/Bismarck/Williston/Minot, ND, WFSB in Hartford, CT (Used The 1957 Sign-On), KADN in Lafayette, LA (Recycled Audio From WNTZ), KENS, KMYS and KABB in San Antonio, TX, WNDU in South Bend, IN, WKRG in Pensacola, FL, WPSD Paducah, KY (Used the 1990 Sign Off), WMVS/WMVT Milwaukee, WI, WNTZ Natchez, MS (Used The 1960's Film But Same Audio As KADN), And WHIO Dayton, OH (Used The 1970's Split-Screen SSB). @@djlobb most were shut down in the states, but apparently some low power stations in Alaska have until next year. A few low power stations shut down this year throughout the rest of the country because the deadlines have shifted a few times
Even though seeing analog gone is sad, I think after it being completely shut off in the United States since 2020, it’s unfortunately time to embrace digital, with atsc 3 I think the range problems should be fixed, but analog is still better for long distance and mountainous areas overall
The cable tv is the best the fiber optic from europe is good for televisions because it converts the digital signal to analog signal but the default routers from the provider is very shitty with limited options on it

On digital all I get is a choppy picture if I don't have good signal, with analog you just have a little bit of static.
Digital is a very "it either works or it doesn't" sort of thing.
ATSC is the worst.
The end of an era! Hard to believe it's been 10 years. I hardly noticed the change, since I had Satellite TV.
I would not call that going out with a whimper. That was actually a classy send-off to the end of an era. Most American channels simply pulled the plug just to get the dumb thing over with.

The end of the analog Tv Signals in Europe was 2007
We have DVB T
Been there before
Exactly. I would rather have a snowy picture than no picture at all.
So that's why my 1980's GE portable color TV can't pick up any darn channels even with an antenna installed.
I was three when this type of stuff happened and I remember it happening to one of the channels I watched!

Government Alerts and News keep it alive, like AM and FM Radio.
I predict that this will take possibly 10-20 years latest.
