Martijn i want to say that of everything I have watched in my nearly 80 years of life nothing has compared to the pleasure i am getting from watching your journey. The photography, the views, the music, the silence, the slow pace, your honesty, everything about it. I feel like I know so many parts of your land to walk on and when i got to bed at night i take myself and quietly walk around through the trees, the stones, the wildflowers, the dampness, the rock walls. I can’t thank you enough for sharing this story with us.
I just found Martijn's videos and I couldn't have made a better comment. Beautifully said. I'm gonna try that walking through his mountains going to sleep tonight.
Talking about critters! Try rubbing lavender oil in olive oil onto your body for mozzies etc. Also to fumigate your cabin, per Juliette 'de Bairacli Levy's book "Spanish Mountain Life": "Blend human hair with twists of dry garlic stalks, well sprinkle with small hot red chillies, and a handful of powdered sulphur ( use one third sulphur to other matter) Then set it alight on a piece of tin or tray." Exit quickly and after a short time all the critters leave!
Apart from the incredible filming and enchanting storytelling, it is the sound that does it for me. The sharpness and crisp clean sound of tools, footsteps, wind in the trees, the scrape of stone, metal and wood. My heart slows, my body and muscles relax, my breathing deepens. Better than any therapy. Thank you Martijn.

Burnt, brushed and linseed oil gives a great look and make the wood rot proof and insect proof. If you don't want to linseed oil and brush it you can also power wash it. This would make the wood look old.
Hi Martin : greetings again from New Zealand. As my wife was baking whilst I was watching the video , I decided to listen on my headphones. What beauty there is in the sounds of nature. It seems to bring such peace to the soul. The sound of the flies buzzing around took me back to an old album by Pink Floyd, one of their early albums. It created a few nostalgic moments for me and reminded me how quickly time can pass by. Keep safe and see you next week. Richard
@@Essexkiwi Kia ora Richard. That Floyd song must be Grantchester Meadows, one of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite albums, Ummagumma. I too find Martijn's videos peaceful and relaxing.
@@jaygee5693 Kia Ora: yes you are correct. I could remember the album but the name of the track wouldn’t come to mind. What is really of concern is that was around 50+years ago when I first heard that track. Thanks for the reply and keep safe. 🙏
@@Essexkiwi Yes, 53 years since I bought it! It's a great mix of live performances and studio tracks. I no longer have the album, but like to revisit it digitally from time to time. I think it has aged better than I have, but I am still kicking. All the best to you and yours.
You sure know how to surprise Martijn....suddenly a nice big bed...chairs and table.😄.. it's like the sudden shoe shining in other episode..... what a joy😉 Thank you. Btw...the shadows of the tree leafs in the tent...Stunning!!
This is like a labor of love for you isn't it? It's interesting how your poetic side comes out when you are describing what you are planning on doing to your property. It is so beautiful there, it seems to call to out come live here.
@Cheryl Wood but maybe without so many biting critters, as he describes in such detail....oh the good old days when i was young and used to hike the countryside (bringing home ticks from the forest, and lice from old sheds like Martjins!). But hey, there's always a remedy. As long as you ask the locals what they use...oldtimers used to use kerosene or metho to kill the tick in place, then let it just drop off (don't try and rip it out, a good way to get a nasty infection).
I know the volunteers were a great help, and god bless them on their adventures, but I can’t help thinking they were breaking the tranquility and a bit of an intrusion. Don’t get me wrong, I thought they were exceptional young men, but I was so immersed in the peaceful pace of each episode. They did a wonderful job while they were there. Great deck Martijn.
A real bed, a lot of well deserved rest from now on. And your vegetables garden is taking off! Is wonderful to see that your hard work and efforts are paying off slowly but surely.
Strangely, I enjoy watching you patiently deal with the many minor problems that inevitably pop up on a project like this. Rather than get frustrated or discouraged, you apply logic and care to the problem and reap the rewards of a sense of accomplishment and a lesson learned each time. These videos would make wonderful teaching tools for young people about how to approach challenges in life.
I think the evolution of your accommodations, especially the addition of this beautiful tent home, will satisfy the nomad in you while you work on your project. Some have various such project homes or small cabins on their property(ies). It seems to be a good solution in these strange times and a modern sort of nomadic life.
This channel is my absolute favorite. It is a magical place and Martijn’s calm voice explaining every detail, skillful and thoughtful work is a pleasure to watch. I even like how he is working in a buttondown shirt and a hat, classy and stylish. The tent and it’s setup is absolute perfection. Wonderful videos! Beautiful work in every way.👌🏻
Thanks so much for your videos! Your work ethic amazing but I sure do appreciate you being so kind to those “ Alabama” young men. It’s people like you who share with the next generation that is so needed. Yes, I’m from “ Bama “ too.
There’s a ton of work that goes into these videos. He’s changing angles and shots constantly but it looks seamless. He’s really good at this! And these videos make me want to travel!
I was in need of another episode so I started the 2 years on bike. What a ride. Can't recommend enough. So pleased you could upload on Sunday. Watching later. Ciao Martijn!
This channel is really a masterclass in film making, far beyond anything I've seen on UA-cam. Needless to say it is a joy to watch your progress. As many have said, it is meditative simply following what is happening. Thank you Martijn.
Your dedication to the project is commendable. One word of advise from an old builder. Protect your eyes and ears when using power tools. Hearing loss happens very quickly and you will end up with ringing in your ears which will then be there for life. Health is your wealth.
Imagine waking up with the yellow hue and the imprint of the trees on the tent. Heaven itself! I want that picture in my mind for a long time. Thank you for sharing, have a great sleep.
You may want to loop/hang the cord over one shoulder and down your back to keep it high and away from the sander belt. The tent looks very spacious and cool. I got the biggest kick out of you tossing the saw in aggravation and switching to the chisel while working on the stairs. I’ve done the same. Great progress and content!
It did look like a frustrated toss of the saw, but in fact Martijn had completed the saw-cut he wanted, and switched to the chisel to complete the job.
yes, i think its a generational thing. My other fav channel is Lost Lakes (kayaking in Canada with Jon) is very poetic and beautifully filmed like Martjins vids are. But Jon sometimes tosses his gear around in what used to be called 'gay abandon', at times... makes me go: ''oh no''....but, its still a great series on the very remote waters of Canada.
I've noticed that Martijn has a very special way of putting things down. Things are never placed back on a surface, but more tossed there, as if to say 'I'm done with you for now'. Check the despatching of the hammer at 30:12, closely followed by the discarding of the nails for examples in this episode. Watching Martijn dumping whatever he's just been using is now one of my favourite parts of these videos
It's the most inspiring channel I have found so far on UA-cam and considering I had no specific interest for that sort of project tells a lot about the execution level Martijn is able to deliver in his videos. A mixture of limited talk, high concern for aesthetics in all what he does & footing he takes, interesting DIY aspects, calmness of that nature etc..a big THANK YOU !
I swear that everything that you touch becomes a work of art. The shadow of leaves falling on your tent remains etched in my mind along with the shadows of the clouds across the ladies in the sky. I appreciate your little talks since all this beauty tends to make me romanticize what you are doing there. Sometimes I forget that magic is of the earth and has insects and doormice and humidity and heat. So I am very fortunate to share in your experience without the discomfort and challenge…no roses without thorns. I appreciate your many talents right down to your tasteful meals. I am excited for you to start building your house.
It’s October of 2023, so I’m late to this party but it has been such a joy to watch. I am inspired by the videos in so many ways. I’m sure there are schedules and goals to achieve before winter comes again but the impression is one of moving forward without feeling rushed. Enjoying the journey, in other words, not just the destination. Of course, when the destination or achievement arrives there is still enjoyment of that, as well. It’s fantastic.
You’re demeanour is impressive…..calm with a lot of expertise who enjoy nature and like to be alone obviously. Thank you for sharing a part of your life.
Dear Martijn I like your way of working How nicely you do the things Really a perfect men by your profession God Bless you I have seen your all Episode and keen interest for further modifications.
Wishing you many days of awe, waking up with those sun rays projections through birch's leaves tree onto the roof of your tent! 🌝🌿🍃⛺ Followed by the fresh smell of morning coffee, afterwards, upon the new deck, facing the 'dream away' view as at 00:15:50 will be just the perfect catch for one's memory into ethernity!🌌 Soak it all up! Always! 🌄 😍
Hello Martijn, yet another wonderful video - thank you. As a lover of pure essential oils, I would recommend purchasing some pure essential oil of lavender for any bites you are getting. It helps in neutralizing the poison, which helps to lessen the urge to itch, helps with inflammation, smells good and helps with headaches and induces restful sleep. If you do not care for the smell of lavender, then sandalwood is an alternative. Also the use of citronella is helpful in deterring insects. A small oil burner is one way of dispersing the essential oils. The tent, steps, and the wooden platform for tent, all look amazing. Take care and may the forthcoming week be full of wonderful adventures as your continue on your awe inspiring journey.
I love the mindfulness with which you do anything, whether it is buttering bread or building, it is always done with measured thoughtfulness. You inspire me to do the same. Thank you :-)
Thank you Martijn for your thoughtful work. Before you pour a cement floor in your basement please consider insulation and a very good barrier to prevent capillary moisture from soaking into the concrete. I would like to suggest you investigate the Canadian Homebuilders Builders Manual as a good source of information and useful building details.
I would like to add to this saying I saw an interesting take on underfloor heating using a lattice of 100mm wide ducting pipes layed into the concrete and then heated air is circulated through the pipes when heat is required. A benefit is there is no risk of freezing water pipes in the coldest winters and the heaters could run off solar. The company behind this was based in Sweden, I don't think I can include the company's name without the comment being removed, but search for Leg-a-lett (without the hyphens). This could be referenced in the manual mentioned above - the company has a base in Canada too.
@rcanter i second your motion. Traditional building in the cold parts of Korea has pretty much the exact same idea with underfloor heating. Their version has the large wood burning stove down one end, with underfloor clay pipes from the stove running the length of the room. So much more energy efficient, and to have your feet warm is so important when you come in from an outside job where you may be wet through to your boots!
Your videos are teaching me that the (now semi) nomadic lifestyle is a practice in problem solving without getting distracted from the larger goal... personal liberation.
Absolutely loved the tent, and thought it would make the best summer guest quarters with the outhouse and outdoor kitchen so close by. Was just so upset when the bad storm ripped it all up, wish it could have been repaired!! Going back through some favorite episodes, can’t wait for Sunday!!
Martijn, my daughter has sprayed her house for years, with peppermint oil. A few drops in a spray bottle of water. Her claim is, it repels spiders, ants, and maybe more. She sprays when she sees the bugs, and claims they will stay away for a week. Sometimes more. I have used it to repel squirrels intent on digging up the garden.
Don't know if anyone previously has mentioned this, but here in the USA we call sleeping in a luxurious tent like yours "glamping". How much fun it must be to wake up each day with the sights and sounds of nature. Beautiful work. So happy for you.
Martin - me and my wife were in yer neck of the woods last week from NYC and we wanted to drop by with a bottle of wine but thought you were probably busy. Wanted to thank you personally for the good work you've done here. So I'll thank you here :)
Mix iron vitriol with water and beat a few times. This treatment protects wood and gives a nice gray natural shade that darkens gradually. That treatment gives the same natural color tone as your other old wooden details on your buildings.
Thankyou Madeleine for your tip on protecting wood, i will look it up! its nice to think we can have the lovely grey wood AND give the wood more longevity at the same time. Best wishes from Australia
The 'Power' of one! It AMAZES me to see how MUCH a single person can do when 'in tune' with himself and his environs. You have come a long way Martijn. I thank you for allowing us to share in the intimacy of your beautiful life. And the VISTAS! The young men U had helping from Alabama, have assisted U greatly with the cleanup that 4 one person is a daunting task. Each day it's own challenges and each day a new surrender to the moment. No rush. No excessive concerns. Just an 'attitude of Gratitude' 4 the moment...is 'Be-attitude'. Health and God Bless! P.S.Tent is a perfect fit for the solid and well-designed deck...nicely appointed inside too! Gotta feel soOOOoo good to have accomplished! Sleep well!
Advice from an old North American wilderness backpacker ( you probably do not need ) but DO NOT store or leave food in your tent, no wrappers, no used plates ( even once ), the small mammal critters will chew that canvas in a heart beat ( smile ).
My thoughts as well. All the critters will move to the tent soon enough. I would look into some form of pest control; perhaps the locals can advise on traditional methods? A smudge of some type might work for both shelters? The riot mouse might succomb to a "have-a-heart". See also Mousetrap Monday's extensive testing of various rodent ridders.
Dude, your videos has been such a relief for me. I've been writing my masters thesis for the last few months and your episodes has been a joy to watch through my process. The mindfulsness and tranquility of your episodes has really been a sought after break from my thesis. I'm looking forward to follow your inspiring journey in building this amazing home filled with tranquility and calmness!
I could have spent an hour just watching the tree shadow on the canvas moving in the breeze and hearing the wind, the bees buzzing, any other environment sounds. You must be the luckiest person in the world. Those metal tubes supporting the tent were also so beautiful. The rainbowy color is amazing.
I feel lucky to have found this video. How beautiful it is there. I agree, this is a blessing to be able to "tag along" for Martijn's adventure. What a view. I can't wait to see what you do next. I can live my dream through watching your videos, and I thank you!
I‘ve said it before, Martijn you are an inspiration and a great role model. The new tent and the deck is fantastic! Your description of sleepless nights and the abundance of bugs and little critters is something I live with every Spring and Summer. Bug bites are a big issue as are the critters that can destroy a garden and invade the cabin. I’ve resorted to using Irish Spring soap to keep the critters out of the garden and you might try using it inside the cabin. Critters dislike the smell and tend to avoid areas where the scent is strong. I also use a plant based botanical repellent on exposed skin when I’m outside. It’s a commercial product that’s unscented and not greasy. It really helps keep the black flies, gnats and mosquitoes at bay for a couple hours.
agree with you on plant based insect repellent. In Australia, our best one is made from the oil of the Tea Tree plant - its a never fail repellent (although a bit pungent). Pure Lavender oil will do the trick also, but this can be more expensive than tea tree oil.
There is no doubt the scenery, mountains and overall area is stunning but the videography takes it up to another level. There is such an ethereal look and retro film-look to this series. (I can’t figure out if it is your camera lens or equipment or editing or what.) There is simply nothing to compare it to on UA-cam. You have mastered the right amount of talking and your words and explanations are so poetic. Bravo.
Amazing episode, Martijn. Really amazing! You're probably tired of hearing it already, but I have to say it again. The tent is really beautiful, the stairs and the deck are amazing, the full with vegetables garden... Look at it now! Only few weeks ago it was just a pile of soil and now you have a garden overflowing with greenery! I was very inspired from the way you explain the aging of the wooden buildings. It was very beautiful and inspiring point of view. And the comparison with the old people. I think we need to realise that we need that old wooden buildings. And not only the wooden buildings, but all old and historical buildings and items. We need to keep them, to restore them, because they tells story, they give us something we would lose forever without them. They are window through the time and we need to realise their value. And I'm really happy you realise that and use that philosophy in your barn restoration and furnishing project. The summer is time for abundance and joy. So enjoy it in your beautiful home! To the next week!
My god, this is all so beautiful. The aerial shots, the views, the little details, the quiet. Breathtakingly beautiful. But it's all been said in the comments already :)
The birds singing throughout your repair of the sander, the shadow of the foliage seen from the interior of the tent, magnificent audio where we can hear the crunch sound when lettuce is picked really are the kinds of details heaven is made of. Thank you.
Really like the transparency of the lower level of the bell tent, what a great idea. The beauty of the scenery fills my heart with joy, truly breathtaking. Appreciate the quality of your camera and thank you so much for taking the time to film and share. Out of all test samples, love the lightly charred the most, but I'm a Jacobean or Rich Oak kinda person anyway. Bumblebees, sunflowers and a mouse with a giant gold coin. Hee-hee. Looks amazing.
The moment when you were working on preparing the boards and high above you in the evening sky there was an airplane making a pink contrail - that was so brilliant, I gasped for air!!
...what is becoming one of my favorite things about these videos is watching Martijn prepare these lean, healthy, modest, yet nutritious and tasty-looking meals...just enough, not heavy 3 course means with a ton of meat....
I would be interested to attend a video creation workshop if you decided to offer something like that in the future Martjin. Your way of seeing and recording is really engaging for me as a viewer and provides a wonderful level of engagement in the sharing of your experience.
You flow like water like no other and are a true inspiration. For about a month now, every time I eat I watch another bit of your videos. You are literally almost as important to my life as my yoga teacher and meditation teachers. I aim to begin navigating the outdoors with regard to living and becoming more hands on---I have been and now you have given me a whole new perspective. Thank you for taking me through your venture!!
I put an essential diffuser on at night in bedroom. The insects flee. No bites when I keep it on. Plus it’s so pleasant fragrance for humans but not to bugs.
My 2 cents on the wood treatment: Like you said you can't fake it, so why not find out what they did in the old days when the barn was build and build with same joints/techniques, same materials and same finish. I think that is the most authentic approach, and in just fifty years it will look perfect. thanks for the video, looks so lush and green !
When the video first started and the fly went buzzing by, I said to myself , there must be a fly in the house🤣! Then the birds started to sing, the drone buzzed and the butterflies landed on the flowers. Oh but the 🐭 mice and bugs. Still enjoyed the video! Beautiful picture of the tent. Thank you MD!

Imagine waking up with the yellow hue and the imprint of the trees on the tent. Heaven itself! I want that picture in my mind for a long time. Thank you for sharing, have a great sleep.
I love the singing of the birds there. So lovely. So relaxing to hear them isn't it. I appreciate God's nature. Beauty at its best
Yep - I do the left shoulder chord carry and it works well
yes, i think its a generational thing. My other fav channel is Lost Lakes (kayaking in Canada with Jon) is very poetic and beautifully filmed like Martjins vids are. But Jon sometimes tosses his gear around in what used to be called 'gay abandon', at times... makes me go: ''oh no''....but, its still a great series on the very remote waters of Canada.
or, tosses them aside in a 'cavalier fashion' (another great saying you don't hear much anymore...
Youre living my dream!
You're the only guy I've ever seen that can work labour and be stylish as hell at the same time.
Your beautiful New home.blessing to you Martijn
For food preservation you should buy or build what we call a "moscaròla" it keeps away insects and animals and it's very traditional there
Enjoying this from Alberta Canada.
Me too from Ontario
It's the most inspiring channel I have found so far on UA-cam and considering I had no specific interest for that sort of project tells a lot about the execution level Martijn is able to deliver in his videos. A mixture of limited talk, high concern for aesthetics in all what he does & footing he takes, interesting DIY aspects, calmness of that nature etc..a big THANK YOU !
Maybe the most positive thing I’ve ever watched.
I am excited for you to start building your house.
woooo ..... nice tent, i didn't expect it to be that big
That shot when you’re making the bed and the shadow and light through the trees on the tent…just magnificent!
Yes, agree. Martijn is master at creating beautiful visual effects.
“Intelligent men prefer to be alone” hi from Australia, I thoroughly enjoy your videos, pure peace, almost better than meditation :)
Followed by the fresh smell of morning coffee, afterwards, upon the new deck, facing the 'dream away' view as at 00:15:50 will be just the perfect catch for one's memory into ethernity!🌌
Soak it all up! Always!
🌄 😍
You never stop surprising us, the way you talk about old wood is fascinating
@Aussie Kerry i am shocked :) that you haven't mentioned Tea Tree Oil. Backpackers first aid kit necessity for the older generation of bushwalkers...
@@pipfox7834 Oh my goodness, neither can I believe I forgot about tea tree🤦♀️
I get worn out just watching all of Martijn' work😄. He's SO industrious!
Absolutely loved the tent, and thought it would make the best summer guest quarters with the outhouse and outdoor kitchen so close by. Was just so upset when the bad storm ripped it all up, wish it could have been repaired!! Going back through some favorite episodes, can’t wait for Sunday!!
16:00: the evening sun giving light through the trees for a lovely silhouette on your tent... so beautiful! Magical and peaceful!
Best show on TV right there folks.
It's been an absolute treat watching your videos every week!
30:17 - You can really feel the joy of Martijn after investing so much energy and hard work into the deck and the porch! Wonderful!
I keep the cords of my belt sander over my shoulder. That’s the worst problem with them. Aside from belt tracking. Beautiful place, my friend!
That is certainly true.
Get yourself a cat or two Martijn. Problem finished.
No duh. He doesn't need to be told, after living here for 8 months, and camping for years.
I have to say Martijn, you are one of the most stylishly dressed workers in the Italian alps !!
So nice the shot in the tent when you see the light and the shadows of the leaves inside the tent, you created another beautiful space!
I feel lucky to have found this video. How beautiful it is there. I agree, this is a blessing to be able to "tag along" for Martijn's adventure. What a view. I can't wait to see what you do next. I can live my dream through watching your videos, and I thank you!
SO BEAUTIFUL THE TENT AND THE DECORATION INSIDE ! ! ! BRAVO BRAVO ❤ 🏡
the age you are knowing what we know today... it is fascinating to see someone live the old life but in such a rejuvenated and rich way
I‘ve said it before, Martijn you are an inspiration and a great role model.
I’m so behind on episodes I’m going to have to binge watch then ❤
There is no doubt the scenery, mountains and overall area is stunning but the videography takes it up to another level. There is such an ethereal look and retro film-look to this series. (I can’t figure out if it is your camera lens or equipment or editing or what.) There is simply nothing to compare it to on UA-cam. You have mastered the right amount of talking and your words and explanations are so poetic. Bravo.
its the color grading
the joy in your eyes when you said you had bought as real bed :D
Thank you.
The light through the tent canvas is just incredible.
I’ve never met anyone else able to articulate how I feel about old buildings.
Martin, You are such an inspiration to the world!! I'm always so calm after watching your videos. Please keep them coming!!!
The power and tranquility of the high ground is something all men have sought after.
I put an essential diffuser on at night in bedroom. The insects flee. No bites when I keep it on. Plus it’s so pleasant fragrance for humans but not to bugs.
I rally enjoy your channel. Your activities and commentary are engaging, Your camera work is superb. God has given us a beautiful world.
