    Thanks for sharing your insights, mate. Would it make more sense to go with a GH6 + BMVA to record BRAW or the GH7 for narrative filmmaking? I could sometimes use but don't really need the AF, but I might use anamorphic lenses more often than not for my short films. Thanks!

    Yes absolutely agree 2 CF Express card slots are a must in 2024! This would make a lot of sense for a longer RAW wristband, although Black Magic RAW makes more sense! And the XLR adapter will react to raindrops, I think this is a weak point! And in general, year after year, the G series has given us frame rate increases, but that didn't happen this year. This gave owners of the Gh series a separate niche in the market!

      Good point about rain and the XLR 1. On the other hand, it might be easier to cover the XLR1 with something that it is to keep a mic plugged in to the camera itself from getting wet.

      was trying g9 today for good handheld video, appreciating stabilisation. but haven't found anything to compare with my gh5s if on tripod or gimbal. some magic in the 1:1 relationship from the sensor to 4k video, no crop . 12 bit braw going out to video assist. autofocus bad and no stabilisation at all. would love panasonic to tempt me with a gh5s-beating camera with those two things added.

    The real necessary update to any video capable camera is internal ND filter. When most systems have log profiles, and high ISO is required for optimal image quality, this addition looks so obvious that I can't comprehend why no maker comes up with it. It would give that system a competitive advantage over any other.

      DJI Focus Pro with the GH6 is a brilliant combo. Particularly if you use a lot of manual cine lenses. I’ve been using it all the time ever since I got it. Is it better than the GH7? Perhaps. I suspect image quality of the GH6 to be superior to the new GH7, so in that sense the GH6 with focus pro could potentially be better. Hard to say. It really depends on what type of shoots you do and what you define as better

    The GH7 seems to be more of a quick update as a stop gap from potential users jump ship to other brands while covering few important upgrades for a small GH6 users that need them. This will buy time for Panasonic for a new hardware update like with multiple USB-C ports, possibly weight reduction, internal processor for AI, dual CF Express B cards etc. to GH8. All of a sudden M43 will be the go to pro camera 😊

  • @Memory_Gatherers
    @Memory_Gatherers 5 місяців тому +1

    I entered the GH line with the GH6 as an upgrade to a video centric camera. previously I used the Canon 800D for photo and the Sony HVR-Z1E for video mainly. The GH6 is absolutely fantastic, luckily I ignored most tubers disappointing reviews and went for it. I have captured some absolutely amazing footage in the Scottish highlands and had no issue with streaking luckily in my 2 years of owning it, is it really a thing?? The only downside for me with the GH6 is not the Contrast based AF because I mainly use MF lenses or switch the AF to MF 90% of the time though the AF is fine anyway I have found. My issue and its only minor is the format as I am so used to ENG cameras, i kinda like the heft and the shoulder mount etc. The G9ii offered nothing I was interested in and the GH7 doesn't really either apart from real time LUT which the GH6 could easily handle if Lumix update the FW. looking at GH6 vs GH7 and G9ii footage I must say that I prefer the GH6, maybe its softer or the colors just look better, there is just something more digital in the newer models. Maybe its being used to tape based late 90s footage that makes me prefer the GH6 I am not sure. If I was coming into the game new now would I buy a GH7, probably not tbh as I have also bought into Sony FF low light A7Sii so I would likely be holding out for the A7S4 but for many people the GH7 is going to be a great intro and may be a worthy upgrade for the GH5 crew who weren't keen on the GH6 maybe. Oh and yes I still use the HVR :D its about 25 years old now and I LOVE it, and I still use tape not the MVR attachment too. I have even recently bought a VHS M7 for some real old skool footage. If Lumix do update the firmware and its possible as they are adding Arri LOG to the GH6 and they add real time LUTs and maybe a link to the Lumix app, heck ill be shooting on the GH6 for 25 years too.
    As a little side note to this for you tube I generally do walking footage and use the DJI pocket series (up to the mk3 now) I think that thing is the ultimate you tube camera. its tiny, the footage is absolutely superb, any newcomers to youtube who like to VLOG or do street wanders or general everyday walkabout type footage dont spend 2k on a camera just get the Pocket 3, the upgraded version with the Mic etc all comes in handy and is good quality.
    If you shoot mainly MF on mirrorless like me then the GH6 is a beautiful camera to use and prices will bottom out shortly, but if you must have an AF machine then the GH7 is likely the better choice for you. Better to swoop on a GH6 soon though as with the Pen-F when folks realise just how good it is for so cheap, the price is gonna start to rise again. its hard a short production run so will be a rare beast eventually and I think its footage is in a nice niche of its own.
    Ive been taking photos since the Kodak Instamatic 104 days using my grannys camera on old 126 film, through pocket 110, then SLR MTL Praktica etc. We are very lucky now to be in a situation where so many great cameras are available to us and photos and video are instant.
    i am sure if you do go for the GH7 you will not be disappointed, it is a great camera just not one for me...maybe I like a challenge lol - great chat and look forward to more vids buddy.🙂

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому

      I agree. The GH6 should easily be able to handle Real Time LUT. I feel like Panasonic are ignoring the GH6 at this point.
      I share your observation on image quality between GH6 and GH7/G9II. From what I’ve seen so far, the GH6 looks much better. Like you said, the GH7’s (and G9II) image looks a bit more digital. My guess is that it might be a compromise due to a sensor with PDAF.
      Cool you’re still using HVR 😄
      The DJI Pocket 3 is definitely a good youtube camera and I’d like to get it. I just can’t justify the purchase as I would basically only use it for youtube and I earn hardly anything with this channel 😅
      I still haven’t decided whether I’m putting in a pre-order for the GH7 or not. Perhaps I’ll wait until there’s some hands on videos and comparisons to the GH6.
      Thanks for sharing all of that!

    It took Panasonic a decade to fix focus. Probably it takes forever for Sony to add a proper stabe. I bought the G9m2 for the new focus and for the lenses collecting dust in the drawer. Bought the ZVE1 for image quality, perfect focusing and somewhat usable stabe (with compromises)
    The story is still the same (just the contrasts aren't so sharp): if I need handheld, I go for the G9II, if I want to be sure about the autofocus, I take the Sony.

    The reason I bought the GH5ii was the low setting on the preamp and compatibility with the XLR1 adapter over my G9. Purchased the S5ii because i needed full frame for other (photography related) reasons and PDAF was a bonus. Considering the GH7 but waiting on more details on the XLR2 adapter to (1) see if the noise performance when the preamps are pushed is improved and (2) if the XLR2 becomes backwards compatible with the S5ii and/or GH5ii even in 24-bit mode. 32 bit is still not the selling point for me. Actually, l'm more excited about the DMW-XLR2 than I am the GH7.

    I found ALL, and I do mean all, of your comments to be spot on. I've watch just a few of the other reviewers and I kept thinking (and on Robin Wong's thread commenting) that there just didn't seem like quite enough of an upgrade. You make a good point on the audio options (though I too have enough audio gear and Beachtek units that I do not wish to buy another outboard deck). So yes, better audio options at an enhanced price that I likely won't go for, and better AF. While I could argue that the better AF is enough to upgrade, by itself it is less than compelling. As to lack of marketing, it's almost like they are acknowledging that this is what the GH6 should have been more like (I'd agree), so it feels like they just wanted to sneak it into the market, almost like it HAD been the cam they released 2 years ago! lol But it does make me yearn for whatever the GH8 will be, as by then I expect it to be worth the upgrade.

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому +1

      You make a good point about the marketing. Let’s hope they won’t completely ignore the GH6.
      I still haven’t decided on the GH7 yet myself. It’s a tough one. The main reasons would be the convenience of having the XLR2 with 32bit float and the autofocus (though I mostly shoot manual). That’s quite the investment for a new camera body relative to the new features it has over the GH6.
      Thanks so much for watching!

    • @lanceevans1689

      @@RedFrameTech Right. To get that audio we want it will run around $3,000 US for cam and audio (Of course, don't buy it now. I bought mine for that $2,200US and promptly saw it drop to under $1,600 a few months later. And this is how companies chip away at a customer's loyalty!) 32-bit would be nice. But I want it built in. I have a Zoom H5 and can simply set that to 24-bit, which really still gives a damned good buffer zone. But also lets us run a second audio input at lower gain. Crackling issues I have had (bad cables) but I don't recall the last time I had clipped audio.

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 5 місяців тому +1

      BTW, let me also add what you IMPLIED in your video when you showed you were doing a talking head with the old G9. That is, sure the PDAF is better and great. No argument. But the older AF, especially on the last revisions of it, like in the GH6, was VERY useable. Not quite thoughtless run-and-gun, or fully reliable remote. But still quite serviceable. Besides, over half of my lenses are manual anyway! lol And if someone is a total R&G shooter, and totally dependent on the best AF, they likely moved to Sony a while back. Or certainly should have. And last, the other item you noted that I had not heard, was that the GH6 and 7 images/colors don't match. That is moronic! Most of the ppl who are buying the GH7 are already in the system and likely have a GH6 (or 5, which is non-matching yet again). Install a setting: "Match GH6 Color".

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому +1

      yea, 24bit audio is plenty. It’s just that as a (mostly) solo videographer, not having to set gain is one thing less to worry about. Plus the added benefit of the ability to raise levels in post without raising the noise floor. But yeah, I’m probably gonna wait till the first price drop..

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому +1

      I agree. The GH6’s AF is quite usable.
      The mismatch in color between the GH6 and 7 is a concern. For my G9 I made a LUT to match its V-logL to my GH6’s V-log, which was not too difficult. So I’m hoping it’s doable for the GH7 as well and I’ll probably match it to the GH6. Not the other way around

    I really appreciate your initial thoughts. I'm a big fan of the GH6 and I keep telling myself that I'll wait, but I'm not sure I can resist. I still prefer the image from the GH6, and when I see comparisons, it's like the GH6 has that optical low-pass filter (OLPF) look and appears to be less digital.

      I’m telling myself the same thing. Haven’t decided yet 😅 I am slighly concerned about IQ on the GH7. Thanks for watching!

    I think I’m going to wait for the price to come down a bit. Maybe it will be in the $1500-$1700USD with holiday sales.

      That’s probably wise. I don’t think I want to wait that long 😅

    I was waiting for your impressions and I 100% agree with you. The only difference for me is that for now I'm going to keep my gh6 and wait 6-12 months for some deep reviews and comparisons because I'm really concerned with the actual IQ of this camera. Then eventually I will grab a deal on the used market. All the nice additions are not ground breaking to justify a preorder like I did for he gh6.

      I share your concerns with the IQ. I can’t be bad, but it might not be as good as the GH6’s IQ. I’m still debating getting the GH7 on preorder or wait a bit like you are.

    The footage from your G9 looks great. Did you add your skintone LUT? The GH7 is a powerhouse but I think for my use case the G9 will do.

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, I apply my LUT as a standard to all my G9 v-log footage. It’s still a great camera ( apart from the hunting AF when I’m filming myself 😅)

      How did you brace the camera in your car? Looks very stable.

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  5 місяців тому

      @@Democratiser I had put it on a cheap tripod and was able to jam the legs between and against things like the sliding mechanism of the seat etc. It was surprisingly stable. Much more stable than i’d expected haha

      @@RedFrameTech you know, I suspected it was a tripod as I couldn’t imagine any other way of getting that angle without specialist stunt movie type kit like suction cups etc! Whatever works! And it did! Great image and audio. I was impressed you were so articulate while driving.

    XLR2 is so expensive, about $500, so in most cases it's not worth. At almost cost of Zoom F6... 32 bit float audio in general is avaialble in audio software from 2000 or even earlier, literally, but nobody bothered to implement for 20 years, and now present it like a innovation, that should be done a decade ago.
