The Best Sugar Cookies to Decorate with Royal Icing (No Spread!!)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2020
- If you´re curious to see how I make my cookies, and how they keep their shape, well look no further! I use a common recipe but have made a few simple tweaks to make these delicious, no spread cookies a sure hit!
My favourite part is that it calls for brown sugar (I prefer using dark brown sugar), it gives it so much flavour and a beautiful golden colour. These cookies are great for decorating with royal icing as they can be handled and transported easily without worrying that you´ll break them but still maintain a softer bite! They aren´t too sweet, so once they are iced, they taste amazing. And if you're scared of too much puff, you can reduce the amount of baking powder from 1tsp as said in the video to 1/2 tsp.
The changes I've made to the recipe:
- add dark brown sugar instead of golden brown sugar
- add 2 teaspoons of butter emulsion flavouring in addition to the vanilla
- add 1/2 to 1 teaspoons of baking powder instead of 1/4
Watch until the end so you can get all the tips I´ve learnt to get those perfect cookies.
The recipe is by Lila Loa (with a few tweaks of my own) and can be found here:

This recipe can also be flavoured with any of your favourite extracts or emulsions. Lots of popular ones almond, lemon or a mix of both!

Hi, I've just found you and I wanted to say what a pleasure it is to watch you. I like that you're behind the camera, it's a lovely change. I'm also thrilled you are not afraid to say you use other peoples recipes, with credit given.
I'm excited to try your sugar cookies, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to these cookies so I'm very excited. If it goes wrong, i'll just try again. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and wish you the very best.
Thank you so very much for you kind words. You've made my day with this comment 🥰 and you have the right attitude so I know you'll be successful!! I still have days where everything goes wrong even though I've done it a million times. But when you do get it right, you feel a great sense of accomplishment 😊 thank you so much for watching and I also wish you the very best in your baking journey!
This is an awesome recipe! Turned out great. Easiest I’ve done. Your presentation was very clear!
Its such a great recipe!! And thank you!!
My cookies just finished baking and they came out AMAZING. Thank you. I pray I can decorate them 😩. They’re for my grandchildren for the holiday.
Yay! I'm so happy they came out well! You'll do great at decorating and your grandchildren will love them 🥰
"YOU GO GIRL"
You got this!!!
Thanks! I’ve watched a few of your videos. I truly feel I’ve benefited! I’ve been baking since 1978. My aunt was a cake decorator, so I learned a little from her. But I’ve always wanted to decorate sugar cookies like she did, though I never had the opportunity to watch her. Thanks for your tutorials and all the time and effort you have invested!
Thank you so much, it's very much appreciated 🥰🥰 and I'm sure your aunt would be proud of your cookies today!
You just changed my life - THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE *DETAILS* - YOU'RE VERY GENEROUS FOR SHARING, WHAT I'M SURE, HAS BEEN YEARS OF EXPERIENCE!
You're very welcome! If I can save a few people some of the learning struggles, then I'm happy ♥️♥️
I substitute 2 tablespoons of the flour with corn starch. I also add a tablespoon of crisco and mix it with the butter. The cookies melt in your mouth and yet strong enough to handle and decorate.
Amazing!! I've heard corn starch helps to soften cookies but never tried it! I'll have to try it one day 🥰
Thanks for the tip Laura. Do you use butter flavored Crisco or regular Crisco?
@@gwenleonard57 regular flavored crisco. Hope you like them after trying those add ons.
Hiii how do you substitute like do you just add 2 table spoons of cornstarch to your flour? Kinda confused
@@normari_gutierrez3535 I put 2 tablespoons of flour in my measuring cup and then spoon flour on top of that to equal 1 cup.
I made this cookie recipe today and love the flavor and how the cookies keep there shape! Love the brown sugar so much!
Thanks for easy recipe of these beautiful and delicious cookies!❤️
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this. I do cakes but never tried my hands with cookies and I decided to bake some for a family member’s baby shower tomorrow and this recipe and the icing is extremely helpful!
That's so nice of you to make some cookies!! I love this recipe, its amazing!!
By far the bessst explained step by step tutorial for newbies on baking sugar cookies!! I feel confident to try again as you answer little things here and there that came up when I baked
That makes me so very happy to hear! I'm so happy you will give it a try again 😊 thank you for your sweet comment!
I’ve heard this recipe is so good! Yours look beautiful as always!
Thank you so much!! I have had lots of compliments on the cookies so must be good 😁
Do these still have a soft bite ?
They aren't soft like a lofthouse cookie or melt in your mouth, but they're not crispy either (unless you make them really thin and bake them crispy). You can always bake a minute or 2 less to keep them softer inside, but I prefer the taste when the edges are golden brown. Its hard to describe but I'd say in between soft and hard.
Thx for the tips! I’m 14 and I just made this cookies for Valentine’s Day and they are delicious!
Yay, that's amazing!!!
I'm so obsessed with all your tutorials! I've been a butter cream decorator for 30+ years and always wanted to expand to include royal icing, but the few times I played around with it were complete disasters. Thank you for sharing both your cookie and icing recipe. I can't wait to start this next decorating journey! Keep those videos coming!
Thank you so much 🥰🥰 its a whole new world with royal icing and its amazing at all the things you can do with it! But yes it's a but tricky at first (although it looks so easy when someone else is doing it)! But I hope you give it another try!!

So glad I found your channel. I’m looking to make cookies with our 10 year old daughter. This recipe and with the Royal Icing are perfect. I appreciate what you are doing.
Thank you so much! And how wonderful that you will bake with her, I have some of my best memories baking and cooking with my mom (and still do it with her)!

I love watching your decorating shorts/reels!
Thank you for this! I honestly don’t care for that underbaked flavor of the lighter cookies. These sound delicious and would make epic snickerdoodle cookies too!
Thank you so much!!! And yes, snickerdoodle would be amazing with these, not sure why I never thought that!! And I find browned bottoms are so much more flavour but I think poeple are scared to brown them now cause pale cookies are in 🤷♀️
Oh I would love to know the steps to make snickerdoodle.
I appreciate that you are interested in having them taste as good as they look. Using brown sugar and butter flavor sounds like a great flavor enhancement.
Thank you!! At the end of the day all of these nice cookies want to be eaten so taste is super important for me too,a

@@LittleCookieCo I am making this atm put the 3 and 1/2 flour then the 1/2 extra flour and it is still soft plz help me do I just keep adding more flour or throw it out cause I don't want it to floury
Add another half cup of flour, or you can cover your dough and let it sit a bit, it may get less soft as is sits. If your butter was too soft or its really warm and humid it may take more flour. Try that, cover the dough and then in 30 minutes try rolling and putting in the fridge before you bake and it should work!

@@LittleCookieCo I felt like you said this already, but I’ve gone back and can’t find where you might have said it--do you chill your dough before cutting it? If so, how long?
I chill it after I cut it! So I roll, cut the shapes and stick them in the fridge. Then I'll roll and cut the next one and then start the 3rd and usually put the 1st in the oven. Seems to work well, they don't need too long maybe 10/15 minutes minimum! As long as the dough feels chilled!
I love your videos, not to many people explain what they do like you do. Thank you
Thank you so much ❤️❤️

Absolutely love this recipe. Thank you
Thank you!!! I can't take credit for the original recipe but it is amazing and so easy to do!
Amazing job at making the video...
Recommendation: cut the baking powder to 3/4 instead of a full teaspoon, you will still get the rise. The longer the powder sits in the dough the more likely you will get bubbles in the last few cookies. Also, you can cut back on the flour, and make sure you refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour (2 hours preferred) before rolling out. You want that butter to chill really well! This will make the cookies not spread without the extra flour. The amount of flour makes the difference between a cracker texture cookie and a good soft buttery cookie without loosing the shape.
Love your personal tweaks... the brown sugar can make all the difference, and the butter flavor is great for cookies along with many other deserts and pie crusts ❤️! Again amazing job at making the video!
Thank you so much for your recommendations ❤ I'll have to give it a try!
Joe Harrison Thank you on the tips!
What do you recommend to cut the flour back to?
Hello. I have brown sugar instead dark brown sugar do you believe it’s ok using brown?
Yes it will work! I've made it with golden sugar which is the lighter brown sugar we have here without any issues!

@@LittleCookieCo
morning, what is your recipe for sugar cookies?
There's a link to the recipe in the description below the video!
This is my favorite sugar cookie recipe! I use Loranns Butter Vanilla emulsion (all I can find in my area) and double the amount. Once the cookies are baked and decorated, I find the flavor really develops and the cookies soften a little if I place parchment paper between them and freeze them at least over night then let them come back to room temperature.
Yay!!! The flavour is awesome, and like you said it develops and just goes so nicely with the icing! And so many people say (including myself) that freezing the cookies tastes even better!!
Hello! I can only find butter vanilla as well. When you say you doubled it...did you still put vanilla in it or...?
@@rosehanks2843 I don't add in the regular vanilla extract, just use the butter vanilla emulsion in place of the butter emulsion and vanilla extract, that's why I double it (I also just love the taste)
Thanks for that suggestion 😊
@@adria89 that’s all I can find too 😭 did you try it ?

Thank you so much!! That makes me so happy to hear 🥰 I was there too as a beginner so I try to tell everyone the things I wanted to know when I first started!
I made these cookies today. I was hesitant because of the unspecified amount of flour. Yes, you can add all the flour you want to get cookies that won't spread, but they will be dense and dry. I started with 3.5 c of flour like the original recipe calls for. The dough was the consistency I use for my large chocolate chip cookies and they spread some. So I added the cornstarch and a bit of flour for a little over 4 cups of flour/starch and gave it a go. I was presently surprised. I made rectangular cookies and hearts the straight sides. The rectangles were rolled too thickly (obvs my fault) but kept their shape quite well - a slight amount of bulge but no real spread. The hearts were closer to 1/4 in. but rerolled a few times so I thought they'd the terrible. They are crisp and clean. They might be more tough because of the rerolling - but the cornstarch should help that. Because of the extra sugar (compared to other recipes and that brown sugar is sweeter than white sugar), these are pretty sweet by themselves. They are very like a chocolate chip cookie base that needs dark chocolate to balance them out. Once I add the royal icing, I fear the real problem with these cookies will be that they're too sweet. But we'll see once they are decorated and consumed. I did chill the dough for a few hours before I rolled them out and then for the amount of time it took to roll out the second half (10 - 15 min). The bake time was longer because they were thick AND chilled. Closer to 15 minutes for my 2x3 in rectangle. Thanks for posting this :)
It sounds like they worked great for you!! I love how everyone has their own unique spin on them!
@@LittleCookieCoiam happy that I follow you 💯 # YSW 😊😊😊😊😊

I've used for 1 cup butter (225g) 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup white sugar, 2 eggs, then only 2 and 1/2 cups flour and it was perfection! My favorite cookie ever! I flatten my dough while it's still room temp, and put it in the fridge/freezer flat for about 15 or 30 min... Then good to go! Brown sugar is a great idea! Thanks!
🥰🥰🥰
Hi! I’m new to this and this seemed like a pretty simple measurement and recipe so is that all you ended up using?
@@normari_gutierrez3535 So I've tried and retried and I've found the perfect recipe... (for me!)
I use the following:
1 cup of butter (2 sticks)
1 cup of sugar (you can divide the sugar the way you want, brown & dark brown taste caramelised, while white only adds sweetness which is also delicious if you like sweet things, you can add tastes to your icing later on. So you can do half and half or 2/3 and a 1/3 or divide between the 3 sugars)
1 egg + salt (I add my salt to my egg or on my egg to avoid that raw egg taste)
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder (all 3 can be added to the egg & mixed to it before pouring)
3 cups of flour (To me that's the prfect amount. The cookies cook perfectly, the dough is not greasy - I would go up to 3/4 cup but not more. I don't like cakey flourey stuff 😂)
@@nadinekore6308 perfect! I will definitely use this to try it out, also do you add royal icing on top of the cookie? Or a different type of icing and if so what ingredients 😂. Hahah sorry for all the questions
@@normari_gutierrez3535 Little Cookie had me try Meringue powder which is a substitute for egg whites... And it's amazing. Her recipe is on her channel, it's something like 2 cups of powdered sugar + 1 tbsp meringue powder + 1 tsp vanilla + food coloring of your choice 1 tsp + 1 to 3 tbsp water ...
I prefer to cover my cookies with buttercream - which is the most delicious thing I've ever tasted 😂Butter 1 stick + 2 cups powdered sugar + 2 tbsp milk + vanille or other
This one is not great for decorating, it's more of a frosting.
Omg the flour tip makes so much sense. Thankyou I’m going to try it with my cookie recipe at home. Please what temp did you bake them at and how long? 💕
I bake at 350°F and my cookies are usually bigger so I do around 10 minutes. But I usually set a timer for 7-8 minutes and then keep checking back to see when the edges start to get golden brown!
@@LittleCookieCo I think you mean 350 Fahrenheit 180C
Yes!!! Thank you for correcting me! I'm in Canada so everything is in Celsius except my oven is Farenheit and I forget haha.
@@LittleCookieCo easily done. Your re ope looks great. I’m going to try it out this weekend 😋
Yay! Let me know how it goes!!
i made the cookies using 3/4 tsp of baking powder and dark brown sugar, I cooked one batch for 7 min they were light in colour, the 2 + batched i cooked 2 min longer until they were darker in colour, i much preferred the taste of the darker cookie, what a difference. This is my new sugar cookie recipe, amazing taste texture and no spread!!
Yay!! Yes, I'm glad you baked them longer, it really does taste so much better! 😁😁
Just made your recipe...love it!
Awesome!! Glad you love it, can't take credit for the full recipe but it's a great one!!
You are fantastic !! ❤❤❤
Thank you 😊❤
I am definitely going to make your recipe. One question, do you ever add almond extract to your dough? Thank you for another great video! ☺️
Yes, I have added it before!! A lot of people love it, so it's a great option as well!
@@LittleCookieCo do you replace the vanilla extract with almond? Or will you add both?
You can do either or. I always like to add a touch of vanilla and then other flavours as well. But you can do just almond as well just a personal preference!
I made three batches of these today. They are great!
Wow!! You are amazing 🥰🙌
You’re right the dark pans had them golden brown on the bottom and edges. I’m so excited
Woo hoo!! It gives it such a nice flavour 😁
Hi, im italian and here brown sugar it's so difficult to find. How can I do? Thank you for your videos❤️🤗
If you don't have brown sugar, you can add molasses to white sugar! You can google homemade brown sugar 😊
@@LittleCookieCo thank youuu❤️🤗
@@sugar_and_choco dear am trying to make it vegan.. usually...I use raw sugar.. that’s has a kinda of caramelly taste.. still I can add my brown sugar is it??? Sorry if I sound silly in asking so...
@@bhavanisri8515 you can use brown sugar if you’re making them vegan
White sugar and molasses mixed makes brown sugar ☺️

Omg did them today the best recipe!!! So yummy
That's awesome, so happy to hear that!!
These are DELICIOUS. thank you for sharing!
Yay!! 🥰🥰
We made them and they looked and smelled so so good. The taste was not good at all. I read through the comments and think we must have done something wrong?! We measured by weight not volume and did everything as perfectly as possible, but they taste like cardboard to me...my daughter says play-doh
It could be maybe you got the sugar measurements wrong, but these cookies are meant to not be too sweet because royal icing is really sweet, so it balances out the icing. Thats why I lke to use real vanilla and butter flavour as its tastier to me. Everyone has their preferred taste though, but try searching up a recipe with powered sugar you may like it more!
Thank goodness it wasn't just me! My husband said they tasted like biscuits. I appreciate the tutorial and maybe that is her taste preference so I am not being ugly but I am so glad it wasn't just me!
Thanks for the recipe. For how long can i keep the dough in the fridge before baking the cookies, please?
If you man chilling the cutouts before baking, I would say try no longer than an hour as they dough can dry out if uncovered too long. But if you just want to keep the dough before rolling in the fridge, you can wrap it in saran wrap and keep in in the fridge for a couple days
Thanks a lot for you're reply. I'm gonna do those for christmas. 😊
