For me Bill Evans and this example of collaboration with bass and drums feels like subtle soulful perfection. You get this vibe of 3 guys in unison creating a sonic conversation of instruments weaving and blending a mixture of melody and harmony. Evans really lets his mates express with freedom and support with no pressure or dominance necessary. He orchestrates without commanding and his articulation of directions seem as effortless as his piano playing. This kind of music making is very rare these days. I love Bill Evans’ music. 🎶

I can't stop watching....so insightful into the process. It always strikes me as to how patient, kind and supportive he was with the other musicians, holding in check what must have been raging perfectionism on his part. He tolerated many horrible pianos also, transforming them into beautiful music machines. For Bill, it was always about the music, rarely any ego involved. Precious and rare....

That's what sets him apart. There is no separation between him and his piano. They are one unit. Unfortunately as a human he has to leave the piano to take care of himself.
The last ballad is called something like "If you can see me now" by I believe Tadd Dameron.... in any event, the way he plays that with the subtle slight details, ( chromatic passing tones, a 4th voicing when appropriate, even a little bluesy at times, ) is perfect.
I moved to NYC in 1966 and I started seeing Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez at the "Top of the Gate".It was noisy and nothing like the last time I saw him at "Shelly's Manhole" in Hollywood ,from 1963 to 64. When Bill came into the the room back then the entire room got quiet for a few minutes. There was a kind of respect,a quiet that accompanied him even before he got to the piano along with Chuck Israels and Larry Bunker. Anyway , at the "Gate" the noise was annoying to people like me who wanted to listen. It continued like this for years , too, every time I saw him there. It never occurred to me that he was doing anything else ,for instance this video(incidentally ,thanks for sharing ). On the gig Eddie was a friendly fellow ,always accessible walking between tables saying hello while Bill remained aloof , at least to me , and the mystique of his earlier music with Scott LaFaro continued for me. I think I was resistant to Eddie's wonderful technique as I was a fan of the "Live at the Vanguard" recordings and yearned for the interplay of that trio. I really didn't like Israels but Gomez was really a great addition . The videos that survive are refreshing and I am glad I get a another chance to see , hear , and appreciate them once again.Thank you.
The comparison imo between Scotty and Eddie is unreasonable. Bill was becoming bill with that trio snd all three viewed each other as both equal and complimentary. When Eddie joined- Bill was already a giant among musicians. The original magic in a bottle could never have been replicated. It is fortunate that his subsequent trios all were as wonderful as they were.

I have a strong feeling that none of these Danish guys were really up to the occasion. Evans was very patient but seemed to be under considerable strain. On the other hand, it can't have been easy to fall right in step with a genius, All of them, and I mean all of them, should have immersed themselves in the music via recordings for at least a couple of weeks prior to the event. But... it really turned out quite well, and they all seemed to be satisfied. Bravo.

And look how alex riel is nervous and happy to join a giant like bill! but i think he made a very good work in this session. we can also understand how the groovy approach of eddie gomez influence the music of the trio, in my opinion is the best bass player for bill

Looks like just a few OH mics and magic. No elaborate set up. Just sounds awesome. Good sound guy. And not to mention great camera work. And would have not been the same in color. The B+W is classic. Too few appreciate that now. Drummer did well fitting in. Intimidating situation. Absolutely fantastic. Liked seeing the camera guys around etc. Full context. Shows also what concentration the players needed to have. When are Bill and Eddie not great?

I've seen this video before years ago and I am reminded of how thoroughly Bill thought out his arrangements, chord voicings, rhythm and phrasing. They're almost like classical pieces except for solos and the feel of jazz. I'm also reminded how close Bill and Eddie were musically even at this early stage of their association and thought when Bill was running down the tunes for the first time - "These two don't really need a drummer!!..." And I wonder too, why Alex Riel didn't prepare himself for this unique opportunity by listening to Bill's recordings?!! After all, Bill has recorded all of these tunes years before 1966 and all his albums must have been available in Denmark....... I thought he did ok under the circumstances, but was still basically an amateur, called to play with real pros, who were, luckily for him, patient and gentle enough to carry him through these performances.

Incredible that 4 years ago I had the lucky chance to play a couple of pieces with Eddie Gomez (how young here!) namely one was Autumn Leaves!!!
