Philip, I've been cooking for decades yet I get very stressed in the kitchen, and I could relate to your frustration and the sense of letting down your dinner guests. Stay focused, and pay attention to what more experienced cooks are doing, you have a huge advantage there with excellent cooks from whom to learn. You will improve in the kitchen because you want to.

I can totally relate to Phillip. I often attempt multiple new dishes at once and dinner is inevitably hours late and I feel so exhausted at the end, I just want to go to bed. Sometimes you need a break for a few days, but keep at it Phillip! I think you'll hone your skills and enjoy being in the kitchen.

I read in a garden book years ago that when you prune lilacs it takes around 7 years to come back full bloom. It happened with mine.
Looks like the gophers are doing great also. If you plant garlic and onions as a border around the flower gardens it will keep them from eating the flower roots.

I bought myself a heated blanket for my birthday this year. So far I’ve managed without putting it on, but I’m going to have to give in soon. Life without heating is miserable. At least mine would come on if I could afford it. I really felt for you last year with all the radiators exploding.

Here in Canada there is a beautiful tree, Japanese lilac (Syringa reticulata). The blooms lasts much longer and the fragrance is wonderful. Something to consider...
