- Perhaps boring is the wrong word... maybe mundane is more fitting? This may be the most personal video I've shared to date, but I want to show that living in New York City is not all glitz and glam. Sometimes its spending your entire day doing chores, getting locked out of your apartment, and debating what brand of almond milk to purchase at the store. We get a little introspective as we deep clean my apartment and collectively ask ourselves "how can I stop comparing myself and live my life to the fullest?".

Hey Gail, I live in the UK and am watching your upload as Im cooking, after a day working in London. I’m a lot older than you (in my 40’s). I liked this episode a lot. It’s incredibly refreshing to watch women such as yourself and Chelsea Callahan on youtube. It makes me happy there are still genuine, authentic, slightly quirky, thoughtful women out there, making their way in the world. Without all the fakery and awful shallow competitive feel to their content. I feel modern day phone technology, and ‘influencer’ trends have made it incredibly hard for younger women/me to just be, enjoy life and take each day as it comes. Dont beat yourself up. I am sure many others will resonate with you, who live in NY.
It feels like we are in a rather narcissistic movement at the moment and hopefully people will tire of it soon. Sending love and well wishes to you from the other side of the pond. Your flat looks awesome by the way, it’s a proper little home now.

Hi Gail! First, your vlogs are never boring. I was born and raised in Jersey and now am retired and living in North Carolina. Having worked in an office environment for 45 years, I know the struggle of trying to balance work, home, laundry, cleaning etc…it ain’t easy! I am married and he was a police sergeant in Jersey who was injured on the job and then pensioned out early. That brings more challenges. The point I’m trying (desperately) to make is to try not to compare yourself to others. Each situation is different and has its own challenges. Try to enjoy each day and your life as it stands at the moment. In the blink of an eye you will be retired and asking yourself, “What the hell happened…where did the time go?” I am now 76 and have been retired for almost 15 years!! So I ask myself “What the hell??” Don’t waste valuable time comparing your life to others, hon…savor it all! 💗 Chris

I totally agree. I’m 66. I’m divorced. I live alone. I work full time job & have a home based part time bookkeeping business. I’m buying my home on 3 acres of land. I refuse to look at my peers. I’m focusing on my relationship with God, being out of debt by 70 (except for my mortgage), simplifying my life (aka less stuff/clutter) my children/grandchildren & remembering I should carve out some time for me. I think no matter our age, locale, marital status we are all facing the challenges thrown at us. Those challenges are there to help us improve ourselves & our lives. Eventually they will teach us things we can share - as you are doing. Don’t compare. You are unique & your life is unique. Messy or not, perfect or not - it’s your life…not your peers. Continue to embrace it. 😊

I’m 62, single and I still compare myself to others. As I’ve aged I’ve discovered I don’t want to be those other people. It’s still hard. I live in the DFW area. “Perfection” is rampant here but we all know that nothing is perfect in Texas even though it’s my home and I love it. Or anywhere else for that matter. We just have to make the best of it, stop comparing and change what we can. I can’t wait to see your massive artwork hung! Have a great week!

I am a Canadian living in England & admire your posts. Your care when arranging your flat / apartment shows as it looks a very comfortable place (sofa long enough to stretch out with a book) ... perhaps when you post you might play us a song from one of your records & tell us why you have it there ... I started working at the University here in Cambridge & have changed my post / job with them 4 times ... a bit of progression but going to work makes me feel part of a greater good ... housework ... daily I make the bed, sweep the kitchen, clean the sinks ... Monday - kitchen & dining room Tuesday - bedroom Wednesday - laundry Thursday - sitting room Friday - bathroom So it gets done during the week (I work full time) leaving my week-ends free ... I get groceries delivered ... the horizontal white will look fab above your sofa ... rising up from the green ...

Of course we all have our ish. No one's life is perfect, even if they say it is. I am a Wisconsinite. I live in Milwaukee county. Life is hard, but worth it. My favorite mantra is. . .On particularly rough days when you are sure you can't possibly endure, I'd like to remind you that your track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty damn good!!

Not boring but real! Anyone living alone, young or old (like me), experiences issues. They are tiny stumbling blocks, and I believe we have to make a choice each day: are they stumbling blocks, or stepping stones? Thank you for glimpses into solo living in NYC, as you have helped me to see that what I currently am experiencing (as a widow of 7 years) is normal! I appreciate the insights, and continue to marvel at the inner strength those of you younger folk display day to day! Take care, you are precious!

Yeah I remember that feeling in my 30's when everyone was getting married and having kids. I agree no compromise needed so relish the life you have right now. It's good to take stock on life and ask the challenging questions occasionally but no good comes from comparison to others. Just be your fabulous self. Love the wall art, it will look fab I reckon.

I just came across your video and your videos are not boring. They are very realistic and relatable especially to me. I stop comparing myself to others a long time ago, I had to realize that everyone’s perception of life is different our highs and lows are different, and that’s okay! I’ve learned that life is a journey and we have to take it one day at a time, one step at a time.

My life used to look a lot yours- living alone in a city, working a lot. Now I’ve been married for 2 years, have a 15 month old, and live in a Victorian house in the country. I struggle with consumption while decorating this house (WFH commercial interior designer, and this house needs everything ~now~). Anyway, while I count down the days until we budget again and I can buy more pretty things, sometimes I scroll through the “before” pictures on my phone from when we just moved in, and I have so many good memories from that time. It’s just a reminder that our settings are really just in the background of our lives

Hello, Gail! I am from Ukraine. Life-work balance is a constant battle for me, but I am doing my best to take more time for myself and what is important. I have an office job, which is very demanding. I used to work long hours and didn't have anything besides work and commute home. The time came, when I realized that I sacrificed my time and life for those extra working hours, which were not even paid. Today, I finish my work on time on most days, I do sport regularly and try to invest my free time in things, which matter to me as a person.

Great Vlog! First time scrolling by and really enjoyed a realistic view of NYC living. Try not to compare yourself to others your same age,( many of those weddings, honeymoons and/ or pricey vacations are often charged to credit cards or work themselves to death to be able to afford that lifestyle. You seem to have a lot of common sense when he comes to living within your means and living alone. Also you are right not to settle.

Don’t compare yourself or your life to anyone else, remember what you said about ppl always putting only the shinny things for the world to see. No one really knows what they are doing and we are all doing the best we can and I heard something the other day that goes like this Happiness is not the success of the Goal but the pursuit of said goal. No, sweetheart, it's a widespread situation. Currently, I am in Oregon, but I spent many years in the business world, where I often felt constrained. My passion for helping others and my desire to be true to myself led me to become my own boss. Originally from NYC, I completely understand your perspective. In our 30s, thoughts about marriage, homeownership, and other major life milestones naturally emerge. Unfortunately, some NYC content creators focus on showcasing outfits costing $300 or more, which doesn't reflect a realistic lifestyle for many.❤ keep praying 🙏🏼 for me he starts chemo tomorrow 🙋🏻♀️

Gail…another wonderful video. We have all been there when it comes to comparing ourselves to others. Now, we may not give much thought towards it but we have all done it. At times we have been the one that is winning and other times, not so much. I keep many inspirational quotes on my phone and when I was listening to you I thought of it. I am not sure who spoke it but it is good.
Here it is: Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time.
I do believe this and we all have a purpose! You keep walking in yours sweetie.

Boy, Gail. I can really relate to you even though I have two kids more or less your age. One a year younger and one 6 years older. The issues with friends and family doesn’t miraculously stop or get worked out for a certain point on. I think, from my perspective, that the more I understand myself the more issues I can see more clearly. So things I had been accepting and overlooking as “normal” become more problematic, or at least, cause for working out inside of myself. In other words, the adventure continues. Keep that wonderful searching questioning you have and the natural tendency for humility. You are also grateful it seems and I think that also really helps to see us through. Rooting for you

I lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for 40 years in a walk up apartment that, like yours, had a fire escape out the window. But my windows had grates on them to deter break-ins. The one time I didn’t have the window grates locked, my apartment was burglarized. I look at your apartment and I worry for you.

At 30 I'd just met the man who has become my long term partner (14 years). We were together for 4 years before living together (in different areas) and another 2.5 years before we decide to have a child when I was 36. I felt I was "behind" in life for a long time - but where friends at the time seemed to ahead, they are now in very different places and security levels to me. There is no right time to do things - just a right time for you.💜

Just came across this video in my recommended list. You give me Alexis Eldridge vibes- she also lives in the city. I believe she might be younger though. I'm in my later 30s in Northern Michigan married to a Cherry Farmer. It is expensive in our area just like the city. Comparison has recently become an issue for myself too. Its motivating in certain circumstances, however occasionally I find myself looking at Career Professionals higher educated than myself and wonder why I never fought for that level of life. Financial security- Career stability- mellow but intuitive and caring. There are particular circumstances that have molded my personality and the way I process things. I believe comparing is how we find who we mesh with so we let others go to make room for other important things. Peace be with you!

Yes, life is messy and a lot of smoke and mirrors tbh, regardless of curcumstances.
Looking back (quite a long way) to being 30 ....annoyingly, there is something about that particular age when one can't help the comparisons to peers.
I think it's more to do with having practiced being a bonafide 'grown up' for a decade and it has tended to be the years when peeps start to settle down.
Lots of my friends did but only one of them has remained married and she bucked the 'trend' by having her children in her very late 30's/early 40's.
None of us really knows what's in store for us so comparing becomes less irksome as time goes on.
I'm not sure if you've mentioned what you do for work. Could be interesting if you can describe it without giving away details if who you work for.😊

So you're not doing what everyone else is doing? Good for you! Being in your 30's is hard, there are all these cliché expectations (having children, a carriere at the same time, a proper husband, a big house) but now that I'm in my 50's (and single and without kids) I never get those questions again and I see all the benefits of surviving my 30's without giving in to what everyone else expected me to do. No empty nest syndrome ;), not dependant on a marriage, relationship, a shared house with a spouse. To be honest: having children in this crazy world? I would worry all the time. Thanks for your update.

You might feel differently in your 70s and 80: when everyone else is having their children and grandchildren over for Sunday dinners or being a grandmother. You’re still fairly young I’m assuming pretty healthy but who knows what it will be 15 years from now. Lucky and blessed are the ones who have children helping them when they get older and fragile. God willing Im looking forward to spending time with my future grandchildren and doing more traveling with my children even as they get older
So I’m from Iowa. Yea yea save it I’ve heard ’em all. In my family we have a saying dating back to the Great Depression that really sticks with you and I hope everyone reading takes something from it, “Others have it worse.” I could go on but will spare you.

We only see what people let us see. If you could see all of the dark corners of other peoples lives you would probably run screaming.
We always put ourselves under a microscope but would never hold the same standard to anyone else.
So following that same thought pattern we should be as kind and forgiving to ourselves as we are to others.
As for time/age and achievements go.
What was the life expectancy 50/100 years ago compared to today?
When was middle aged? Are we all trying to achieve the same things in the same timeframe forgetting that we have so much more time to do it in?
Live your life your way, on your terms, to your realistic standards, with your realistic targets.
No one can ever do that for you or with as much success as you can
