While a 'hot take' this doesn't align with my experience for the past 24 years in the space.
Role definition differs between the size of companies, too. Smaller firms will have a Product Designer own research through dev handoff, while a larger enterprise SaaS org will have specific researchers, IAs, wireframe and prototypers, animators, content strategists, and more.
UX designers/strategists should be part of the entire process to ensure the key elements are not lost in translation from low to high fidelity. Moreover, UX designers should also work on existing products (not only net new) to regularly monitor, audit and experiment with better ways to streamline experiences.

Wow, all three! What roles / tasks do you typically undertake? Are you the only designer in the team?

@@careerfoundry I'm one of only two designers at a small startup, so we do it all: foundational research, wireframing, usability testing, prototyping, design documentation, you name it. We even do a little QA testing after the feature is developed to assist our engineering team.
Because we're such a small team, the Product Managers are probably a little more involved in the research than usual (and it's appreciated!). I actually really enjoy how varied the work is and it's kinda nice to oversee the whole process from conception to handoff and beyond. That said, I do feel like it's hard to get really proficient at any one thing. We're definitely jacks of all trades, masters of none.
