SOAKING WET TIP: When you have a plant that is clearly overwatered, I often find that standing it on several layers of kitchen roll (or something similar) helps to wick moisture from the pot, provided the pot and kitchen roll are in good contact. Replacing regularly as and when required speeds up the process.
I ordered some plants before a heat wave. Had no idea one was coming. Plants came by 2 different carriers. One carrier was on point, the other experienced several exceptions. As a result 2 plants arrived damaged, one with burned tips and another with brown spots everywhere. I know it was the excess heat from being in transit longer than expected and a surprise heatwave. It sucks but I wouldn’t dream of contacting the seller, doesn’t have anything to do with them. For the Americans, USPS is always on point, UPS not so much. The USPS plants survived the heatwave with zero damage, UPS not so much. Happy this came across my feed, just in time because I’ve got 2 lovely plants on my hands that are NOT happy!
The thing is, people love the plants so much and are so eager to give it the best looking pot, best soil, best sunlit location, feed it fertilizer etc... we end up killing it with love. The trick is always to space them out, one thing every 2 weeks. However I understand that doing this this will cause another love sickness... over watering.
Thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge, Kaylee. I feel like plant sellers should include a short little “tip” sheet like this in their plant orders! Maybe not a physical one but in an email with a client’s order. Of course you hope your client to have a bit of knowledge or experience with plants, but not all do and I feel like a lot of bad reviews or unhappiness with “businesses” is more often the buyer’s more limited ability to care for the plant properly than the seller shipping a “bad” plant. It’s not to say the latter doesn’t happen. Anyway, this video was extremely helpful and I’m so grateful for it! Thank you. I just got a verrucosum in the mail and have been stressed about keeping it alive while it acclimates and this makes me feel so much better. PS the flow chart is definitely not unnecessary. SO necessary! THANK YOU!!!!
I made a noob move and potted up my Gloriosum into a pot that was too big for it, so it's been on a recovery journey from serious rot. I ended up having to hack off all the roots and am now propagating the roots from scratch in water. So I'm re-habbing my plant from...myself hehe 😅 But it's on the up and up!! We have root growth now :D Great video Kaylee! Super helpful! Thank you
Oh my, so glad I watched this when I did. I got a p. billietiae in the post on Monday and I did everything wrong. It looked good and was moist and I potted it on a sphagnum pole. Fingers crossed they are as tough as advertised. Watch video, recriminations, guilt, hope?, resignation, resolve. Today 2 days later the p. Glorious hybrid arrives …dry. In soil. The bottom is sitting in an inch of tap cool water and I’ll check on it until it’s moist again. Then grow light, no touching for a week I promise. Tomorrow I should get something even more dear and I am glad now I have a plan. Thank you
I would add: ISOLATE your new plants, especially if you're not repotting and inspecting the roots. You never know if you're bringing in powdery mildew, a virus, mites, mealies, etc, and you don't want your established healthy plants exposed to anything like that.
Everything I questioned, needed, including, "if you've got a monstera, don't worry...." it will recover. First thing I did was put my 8 plants in water, from moss shipping. They are in a tent to help humidity. My Serpens looked fabulous, but I put it in water too. I'm so grateful for the knowledge you put forth here. thank you !
As a beginner, all of this was incredibly helpful; you are a intuitive teacher. I will refer to this again and again cuz the only way to get any variety is through shipping.
Wow!!!! I cannot thank you enough. Living in PA, I’ve had my share of receiving sad plants In the winter (and summer). We don’t have many sellers in PA so I have to go across country often. I absolutely LOVE the chart-I want to literally cover my walls with it! All the research I’ve done and NO-ONE covers post-shipment plant care! Thank you for that gift. It’s a testament to your character, your a lovely person.
I received my Philodendron Melanochrysum yesterday after being in customs for a month. It was in moss when it arrived, but both the moss and the roots were completely dried out so I stuck it in water. Hopefully, I can save it.
I hope you were able to rescue it! How long did you leave it in water? I'm actually getting a fairly large melanochrysom next week but I don't have the right potting mix yet, so I definitely want to put it in water for a couple of days or so if I can before the materials arrive.
This is so useful and works so well! Thank you! I managed to rehab a seemingly-okay monstera standelyana but with roots dry from shipment. Watched this, listened to your advice and soaked the roots in water overnight. The roots plumped straight up and leaves opened up nicely!
I’ve been freaking out over the pink princess I just got in the mail. It had one yellow sick looking leaf like the syngonium. I am so thankful for this video and all the comments!! I feel so much more confident now.
@@melaninqueen6926 as far as I can remember everything was fine, just dehydrated. The only casualty was a baby alocasia, which doesn't surprise me, since they're such drama queens
All I can say is... BRAVO! I love this video, shared it with a bunch of plant loving friends. Some of it is obvious, some of it needs to be explained, (which you did) some of it is new to so many. Again, Bravo Kaylee Ellen. Thank you for this video.
i just got my ivy in the mail wet in a pot and i had no idea what to do, im glad i found this video before i panicked completely and repotted it, thank you!
Ahhhh this video could have arrived one day earlier!! First thing I did with my monstera was repot it because the pot was so tiny and the plant was huge that when I put it down I accidentally even broke one of its roots that was clearly growing out of its pot. I just keep staring at it and hoping I didn’t kill it as I also watered it. Kill me now 🙄 I also got a alocasia polly but with that one I didn’t do anything as it suffered a bit getting home. A lot of leafs fell off and 2 of the remaining smaller leafs are yellow. Now I’m terrified it will spread to the bigger leafs. I also haven’t finished watching this video and I should probably finish it.. 😂
I wish I would have seen this video before I repotted my new dying Syngonium! LOL...I literally felt the need to REPOT, the struggle is real! I printed the pdf and will now be going off the chart before touching the plant. Thank you Kaylee
That flowpaper with guidelines is a life saver even if after many imports you think you got it all covered and you know how to act upon any situation!! Thank you Kaylee 💓
So glad I’ve found this video. I’ve received 6 plants this week. I repotted every single one immediately. I have more coming, and I now know what to do.
Had verrucosum in mail it was soaking wet. Left it for 2 days but scared of root root i moved it to terracotta and replaced top layer of soil with better dry mix and it is ok for now. Have to admit it's nerve wrecking 😂
I sooooo agree with you! Working within customer service for years and it taught me one thing - reporting issues with something while the product have been used / moved or unpacked is super difficult as there is no way to know what exactly happened and how to help correctly. This happens on the daily. Thank you for the tips on the plant care. 🌱💚
I came back to this video today. I received a philodendron pastazanum cutting in the mail, and have followed Kaylee's instructions to the T. My plant arrived in damn near perfect condition, so I stuck it in some water, and have been changing it every day. It's been 3 days, and I could easily pot this up, but, I'm going to give it a full week to acclimate before I move it to soil. I'm resisting the urge to pot my plant, but I'm NGL, the urge is STRONG. WHY ARE WE SO OBSESSED WITH REPOTTING PLANTS SO SOON!!! 😂
I watched this after I got my plant in the post- started to panic when you said not to repot them because I already had done 🥲. So glad you said not to remove the substrate if you had to repot, I didn’t even attempt to remove any of it because the roots looked healthy but fine and delicate. Given it a good watering and I’m gonna leave it be for as long as possible

Sopping wet plant. I don’t disturb the root system but I do place it on a towel or paper towels to help wick away moisture. Sometimes I keep it out of the pot and while it’s on the towel i place a fan directed at the soil (I don’t have heat mats) and I find that helps. Sometimes after enough water has wicked away, I plop into a terracota pot, again, without disturbing the roots.
Kaylee what if you were to start a service where you live chat with a person to help with their plant questions/problems they might have? Sometimes I wish I could just ask a live person about a plant problem I might have at the moment.
Very informed and timely for me. I have three Warocs arriving from Ecuagenera and a little anxious because I read that they don’t ship well! Watching this video made me feel a little relaxed!😌
Thank you, that was great! I had heard about the water trick for healthy arrivals but never felt comfortable enough to give it a go. I'll be sure to try it next time!
Thank you Kaylee! This video came in right on time for me. I just received my first online plant purchase and I am super happy with the plants I bought. They came in looking great. I just put them all on one corner of my room with a humidifier running next to it.
Ah yes, glad to hear my instinct not to overwater a plant in dry soil was on point 😊💪 I potted up the baby plants I received though - the soil was moist, but there wasn't enough of it and the roots were half exposed. I didn't remove any of the original soil, just added more soil mix around and on top. Not ideal, I know, but hoping I didn't damage them with it.
Would just like to express my gratitude for the flowchart. Your tips really helped me reinforce what I do and added your acclimation techniques. Thanks Kaylee! Subscribed :)

Hey, did you discover a new Etsy shop by the name of: TheNewPlantCo?! They have, unless you bought it, lol an Atabapoense, an Billietiae, an both on my wish list. 😀
More tips: Try not to order anything it the winter if you live somewhere where it gets cold. I even wait for 2 weeks before I pot up or repot. I also have these plants in my kitchen where I spend a lot of time so I check them a few times a day. I have never lost a plant that came to me by mail.
I got an advertisement for drug rehab and it dawned on me at the end of the video that I was watching a video with the word rehab in it. When will the DSM have a plant addiction diagnosis in it I wonder.
I just received an Alocasia Zebrina with half of its potting soil spilling out of the pot, and the plant is slightly dry. But this video has helped me find the necessary solution to rehab this. Thank you Kaylee!
Eek, I wish I'd known this a week ago! I got two plants from you and two from another seller bare root. I potted yours up a few days later 🤦♀️but they look ok. I didn't remove the substrate 🙋🏻♀️ I'm not touching them. They look great 💚. The other two I kept in moss as per the sellers advice but they're still not looking good. AlmostBipedal I do that too. If the plant starts yellowing, I remove the plant from the soil and put it in water.
YES! I do that too also when I know I overwatered! Good to know other people do that too :D
Will a tea towel work?? I can't get kitchen roll at my stores
fkn jaz anything that soaks water and is not full of chemicals. I have recycled fragrance free toilet paper, I sometimes use that.

Perfect timing, thank you for this!! I have a billietiae coming next week and maybe an atabapoense, I wanna make sure they get the best post-shipping care possible. 💕
Side note, I LOVED the way you did B-roll with the identifiers this video, and the side bar info. Goes together really well.
Hey, did you discover a new Etsy shop by the name of: TheNewPlantCo?! They have, unless you bought it, lol an Atabapoense, an Billietiae, an both on my wish list. 😀
@@sherryporsch9349 I got mine from a plant purge page, but I'll be sure to check that shop out!!
The best informative video for beginners like me! Thank you
More tips:
Try not to order anything it the winter if you live somewhere where it gets cold.
I even wait for 2 weeks before I pot up or repot.
I also have these plants in my kitchen where I spend a lot of time so I check them a few times a day.
I have never lost a plant that came to me by mail.
I love the flow chart! It’s great for future reference. Thank you 😘
I got an advertisement for drug rehab and it dawned on me at the end of the video that I was watching a video with the word rehab in it. When will the DSM have a plant addiction diagnosis in it I wonder.
What an EXTREMELY helpful video!!! And the flowchart is not overkill! thanks for posting
Wow your flowchart was incredibly helpful. You are a blessing
I just received an Alocasia Zebrina with half of its potting soil spilling out of the pot, and the plant is slightly dry. But this video has helped me find the necessary solution to rehab this. Thank you Kaylee!
Everything said makes 1000% pure sense. Love it!
One has lost one leaf, the other one is on the way out. Not the seller's daily at all..I've followed the advice here and I'm praying they will all ok. This was such useful video. Thanks heaps
