A little something interesting I would love to see in your videos…! A little pop-up at the beginning across the bottom that says something like “11:30am - 24° - 67% Humidity - Sunny - Sydney, Australia” or something like that. I always wonder what it’s like in your beautiful garden and in Sydney in your videos!

Maiden hair ferns are so misunderstood. They do perfectly fine indoors with normal humidity. The problem is that people water them like normal plants, where is what you need to do is to keep their pot in a tray with water, grow them in self watering pots or in semi hydro set up because they are very thirsty. Second thing people get wrong is, when people buy them and bring them home for the first time, these ferns usually kill off all of their leaves and people think that they are dead. In reality the roots of ferns are extremely resilient, so what these plants do is kill the leaves that are used to one type of environment and grow new ones that are used to new environment. All you need to do is cut off dead stems, keep in watered at all times and it will grow back. Ive grown these ferns in 35% humidity and they did fine.

Spot on. They definitely do prefer the high humidity, but they're a lot more resilient than people realize. I've never once seen a maidenhair fall to root rot.

I’m from Malaysia where Nepenthes can often be found growing alongside highways… which should offer a clue on why Nepenthes are not really suitable as houseplants. They are not jungle plants are prefer to grow in exposed areas with plenty of sunlight.
That said I dont have a garden so I do have a shelf full of them growing under powerful grow lights.

Marantas: I 2 have 3,5 years old marantas grown from a cutting. I use beneficial mites several times a year, Lechuza pon, self-watering pots, 60 % humidity, filtered water. They are gianormous - about 3 m2 and bloom from March till November, most blooms are in spring and summer. They are great indoor plants if one gives them what they want 🙂 Here (Czech Republic, EU) they would freeze outside in winter.

Experienced houseplant collector here. Often, your content provides me with helpful reminders, and always with enjoyable content. Today though, you got me! I didn’t know that yellow and white BOP have different growth habits/potentials. I have both varieties at home, and my white BOP is certainly reaching levels that are not long term feasible. I’m so sad that I’ll have to let it go. But! On the bright side, from the sound of it, maybe my yellow ones can stay forever? Fingers crossed! Anyhow, thanks for teaching even this seasoned enthusiast something new! Until the next one!

I think a lot of those you mentioned not only need good light, but actually thrive on a bit of sunshine, being planted in ground, and extra air movement.💚🌝💛🌞

I commented a few months ago looking for advice to help my coffee tree thrive. I wanted to let you know that I used your substrate recipe and just added a lot of extra tree fern fibre and now it’s shooting the lights out! It’s so much fuller and nearly touching our ceiling.
It’s in a very large north facing window and we have very long daylight hours over summer which it is loving. Some trees don’t mind being inside 😂

I think that for those of us who live in areas that are too cold for most tropical plants that there is wisdom in taking them outside for the summer. I always take my coffee plant, several different philodendrons, Hoyas, calathea/stromanthe, and cacti/succulents outside. I find that they grow better, and have prettier leaves when I bring the back inside. This year, I ended up leaving some of them out until the temperatures started dropping into the low 40s F, though most were back inside by the low 50s F. I think there is a lot to be said about natural air flow. Thank you for sharing your insights regarding this subject.

I LOVE cacti, but also most of my windows are in the roof, so the prime real estate on my only two windowsills belongs to the cacti. As a result, all my foliage plants must be okay with not having bright light, and that's how I chose them. My zz plant is a giant octopus-like monster, my monstera and aglaonemas are lush and beautiful, and my ficus and dracaena are growing fine. In the end, it's as you said: selecting the right plants for your conditions.

In my experience, as long as you're giving a maidenhair fern enough light, you can't really overwater it. People tend to think "a fern, great, let me stick it in my darkest corner and drown it," and then it doesn't have enough light/energy to actually use that water, or have enough energy to outpace the turnover of the dying fronds. I had a massive maidenhair fern growing in 40% humidity, with bright indirect from a Southern window (Northern hemisphere) and treated it as the excess water dump for all my other plants. Anything left in a tray after watering got put on that maidenhair, and it loved it.

I grow a few cacti rather well (some bloom in spring) at 59 lat N in Norway. Caveats - the large plants are on a SE (equivalent to NE for Australia) windowsill and get put into dry hibernation in winter because otherwise they'd etiolate and be sad. They go outdoors for the light in the summer. Also, the small ones I have recently bought a 1000 fc grow light and they seem to be incredibly happy.
I suppose in a way, this proves your point - they either get their summer sun outside, or a pro light indoors. They'd be rather sad and suffering without.

Maidenhair fern is one of my favorite plants. Growing up in San Diego, CA USA, it grew like a weed outside in my late father's shade house. I have tried so many times over the decades to grow it indoors. I have never been successful for more than a few months. Hoya are one of my fav indoor plants, along with snake plants in medium light, not low light. And I love cast iron plants.

I live in Canada and I agree with your list. I have had luck with bird of paradise by letting it live outdoors for 6 months then it comes in for fall and winter, they just don’t get that large here in our climate but appear healthy nonetheless. Also I seem to be the succulent whisperer. They live outside in the shade until it gets cold and then they live in a windowsill or under a grow light and they are absolutely thriving, I propagate and gift them like crazy, all varieties. They seem to like whatever is happening around here 😊

I completely get it when you say to give the plants the best conditions! I live in Houston, and keep all my plants outside. They get massive and display worthy within a year. Once in a blue moon we'll get a freeze in the winter forcing me to bring them inside.

Orchids. I so wanted to grow an orchid indoors, but the moment i bring them in they're miserable.
I just moved from south coast nsw to NE vic and so many of my plants have gone to the compost bin as they just do not like the cold. 😥 I'm working on re establishing what plants work for me in my new climate.
Thanks for the tips as always! 🍃

Okay if you want a beast of an alocasia yes in size but in growing, the Regal Shield is the one.. it’s winter here and it’s throwing out new leaves before the leaves that just came out are hardening off. I do have it in a southern window (I live in US, state of TN) and I did have it under one of those ring grow lights that you just stake into the pots soil just to extend daylight hrs but to slow it down took it out but it didn’t work as it’s growing like crazy

Thank you for the video, Jan. I probably wouldn't get any plant that needs steep drop in temperature at night, like a highland nepenthes or dracula orchids,, for example. You absolutely need a dedicated room, a good size terrarium or a grow tent for it. Which I don't and don't want to have, because of the running cost and the fact that in such a case I can't admire my plants from my comfy sofa. As for Strelitzias, at a plant fair in Ulm, Germany, I saw some dwarf forms, perfectly suitable for indoor growing. Means they get to be only around 150 cm/5 feet tall when fully grown up. Not exactly small but certainly smaller than a Nikolai.

The problem I have growing bird of paradise outdoors is the wind rips the leaves apart and it looks terrible.
Do you not get a lot of very windy storms? I’m assuming you don’t get hurricanes in Sydney. Also B.O.P. grow a lot of roots really quickly outside. Every year I used to pull them out of their pots, saw off half of the roots, and then repot them…. anyway, the Alocasia I totally agree, except for the A. ‘Regal Shields’. that one grows great for me indoors. (although bringing it outdoors during the summer months, really helps it to grow huge leaves.)
The only thing I found that helps with Alocasia a bit is providing heat, humidity and supplemental light by growing them in black plastic pots, which helps keep the soil warmer and more moist. Also they’ve grown well for me in giant empty fish tank terrariums with a heat stone. Also, my olive tree. I love it however, I do have to bring outdoors during the summer. this past year, I didn’t, and it literally didn’t grow the entire year inside. I look at it and I wonder is it still alive and just mummified or self preserved lol … definitely need to put it in a lighter pot and bring it outdoors every summer. Oh and maiden hair ferns will literally be the death of me… They’re just SOOO pretty! “they’re just dying really slowly” 😬😬😬😂😂😂

My winter is short so I think that’s how it has survived during the winter season but you are right, it won’t reach full potential indoors.

A couple of years ago I got an Euphorbia as a present from a friend. It was already pretty large - about 80cm tall. Back then I was living in The Netherlands in an apartment on the top floor with a southwest facing windows with almost nothing shading the space. The room had loads of light and sun. It was growing like crazy. Then I moved to an apartment on first floor in a dense neighborhood and the plant didn’t do anything but didn’t die either. Now I have southeast facing windows with nothing shading the room and it’s growing again! Even in a cold December weather in Slivakia. I struggle with calatheas and ficus elastica though.

I feel a lot of plants would thrive outdoors versus indoors. In Missouri the winters prevent me from growing plants outdoors year round so I have to be mindful of the plants I care for. I do wish I could grow most of them outside but I’m sure the survival rate would be lower. I have succulents and cacti but some are in a south facing window and the others are under grow lights.i grew a fiddle indoors and it outgrew my space. I do notice a difference when growing my ficus burgundy outdoors in the summer the grow is crazy and receives full sun during that time.

For me the worst plant to keep inside is Tradescantia zebrina that's the Ultimate-Weed for me! I absolutely hate it, once I threw on pot from the window in the winter time because the plant was absolutely awful and I was over it's leggy look, and in the spring time that pest had covered my garden... so it refuses to leave in ambient conditions but it thrives after 3 months with negative temperatures outside... Logic- non.

I kind of disagree. I've had them indoors and outdoors in a variety of light conditions. If you like them to be deep purple, then outdoors is better, but I've found the ones right at the back of my balcony or indoors, hiding from the grow lights under other leaves, are the most beautiful, sparkly green and silver with bits of purple that literally look like they were painted on with rough brush strokes. The ones at the back of my balcony in very low light are constantly flowering and are the most beautiful. When they get leggy, you just cut them. They grow so fast.

I think some of the smaller, shade-loving heliconias like 'Red Christmas' would probably be fantastic indoors, - not sure if they would flower, but they're winter-flowering, so maybe - but they might have the same spider mite issue as your cannas. Spider mites went absolutely crazy on my Heliconia rostrata and ignored my velvety aroids and marantas and the only other affected plant was Goeppertia warszewiczii, but it was pretty much restricted to three or four leaves. They left the G. makoyana alone too.

What's your climate? I'm in Brisbane and I'm wondering if mine can stay on my balcony all winter or will need to come in during the middle of the year. That's the problem with having plants that were rare until recently ... I can't look around and see them in gardens and parks to be sure of what they can handle. I've heard they're pretty tough and the main issue is just the sizing-up and mine is absolutely racing up the pole - basically completely covered a 90cm pole (minus pot depth) in six weeks, which is insane.

I put it outside over winter but it is under hard cover so didn't get direct frost on it, since spring hit it has started to grow better than it ever has. It's on a plastic backed grow vertical moss pole!! Seems to enjoy frequent hose drenchings which it never got inside. I liquid fertiliser after I have drenched it now!!

Why im hear is about succulents and cacti. Yeah, most of them aren't good indoor plants. But Seprivivums and sedums usually grow anywere as long as there is light and something to root into i saw someone growing them in carpet on his shed roof to make a cheap improvised green roof in a rainy area they were growing next to moss he also seeded the carpet with. I can grow them outside where i live so usually do but someone in a colder area then me with a sunny window could easily grow those and aloes in it. Also holiday cacti are kinda idiot proof ive had a few die on me but thats always been because something decides they look tasty.
Im having to rebuild my plant collection do to an unfortunate series of events typing, this made me wanna grab some new plants. Ill probably just go find another pothos veriaty i dont have till i have room for another tc order in my conversion tank i currently have 30ish plants in it and pothos can hold me back from stupid impulse orders till i have ether the room free or the money for a big order. Maybe i should try maidens hair ferns again though. I've gotten some good tips for them in the comments, so that was cool.

I’m not a botanist but I noticed that plants are like highways, with light, water, air as the main factors to keep the highway flow smoothly. Any time any of these elements are lacking, it’s like having a traffic jam. Once that happens a the plants get all wonky and start developing strange maladies. Like when I tried growing bird of paradise indoors. There just wasn’t enough light in my space even though it occupies the brightest spot, and as such their leaves just droop and finally it succumbs to pest. Also, colocasias just hate my space and I can never get them to take off.

  • @Sylvicolus

Many people grow succulents successfully inside because they have bright windows or grow lights. You use grow lights for your aroids. How many of those would you grow inside without good light or grow lights>

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  Місяць тому

Aroids require less lights than succulents & are more impactful indoors. With just 5-6 philos I can create a full greenwall .... 5-6 succulents would hardly make an impact but require more supplemental light.... so I stand by my choice haha :D
