Fun fact - McCarthy attempted only three go balls from the far hash the entire season.
Not saying that he can't make the throws, but the eval is just really really really hard because of the offense he was in.
Brett bringing the stats to the vibe i was getting
If McCarthy went back he would have been a higher consensus numb 1 than any qb this year. You can get that just from watching film all day. Big arm and fast
Brett! Love to see you here.
Hi Brett!
if he was playing in central wisconsin, if it exist, he would be a late round pick. stenson bennett territory....
Praying we can get more 3 episode weeks as draft season ramps up!!! 🙏🏾
Amen lol
Yo 1:22:49 on mate trading at 3
Truly the BEST channel for every NFL Offseason - Thank you both Connor and Trevor these FIRE episodes!!
These two just don’t miss 🔥
These late night episodes make it so hard for me to be responsible and save this for work tomorrow
Brother do what i do background it at first let it sink in. Listen again tomorrow for details
Perk of working 3rd shift. I watch/listen to them at work in the middle of the night!
same!
Lol I go through the same thing
@@timboslice3755 I used to be in that boat but I’m finally free
One of my favorite things about combine week is just all the rumors that get started/spread due to all the teams being there and talking to eachother. So a video about what you guys hear just by being there could be fun, whether it be prospects people love/hate more than expected or FA/trade rumors
the vid we’ve all been waiting for
Great show a can't miss pod for draft prospects
Appreciate you!!
Hell yeah, the fellas are back 🔥
I have always been interested in the draft, but I've really come to LOVE the draft process over the last 2 years and most of it is because of watching you guys since the 1st pod! I was posting Madden rebuilds and what not on my UA-cam channel, then I started making and using draft classes on Madden for the videos, starting with last year's class. Then I was going through the whole draft this year and as time went on I was just really enjoying myself as I was learning more and more about the class! Now I have tape (given, it's very limited) and just trying to dive deeper, do rankings and do the work. I'm currently 17 and never really found what I wanted to do for a living other than content creation. I've done an okay job in my opinion up to this point, but definitely not to the point where I KNOW I can live off of it. GENERALLY, I'm saying I appreciate the 6'4, 240 lbs men you guys are, along with A LOT of other people! Also was curious If you guys know any way to get a hold of tape for your "Average Joe" just trying to put in the work, and any tips or advice that really helped you guys early on? Again, I love watching the pod, there's no one better in the industry and you guys are truly AMAZING!
This comment RULES. First of all, thank you so much for hanging out with us since episode one!! That’s incredible. Second, love how you got into the draft space. Tbh my love for the draft also stemmed from the Madden world. The fascination of “what if” came to life in those 2000-2010 Maddens.
As for the tape, I wish I had a better answer for y’all (because so many of you ask bc you have such a passion for it). We get it all through PFF, and college A22 is hard to come by. Unfortunately you kinda have to know someone who has it.
For you to be where you are already at such a young age and loving it is so cool to hear. Keep being unique! We’ll always be here to help where we can!
@@TampaBayTre Not only are you guys the best pod in the space, you guys EASILY have the best COMMUNITY in the space! The fact you guys get hundreds and possibly thousands of comments every week and still answer and encourage them is awesome! Like I said, I’ve been here from day 1 and always loved sitting down and enjoying a couple of guys talking football with the humor y’all have and the banter, it’s always a great time! Sometimes I watch 2 times through because I can’t remember a few things after a week or two😂. Sorry for the long reply here, but damn this means a lot! Thanks.
@IanMnfl I've watched tape and cut ups on Patreon! Caddys Cutups is one of the best ones but you have to pay for it thats maybe $5 a month! Hope this helps because I have the same love and passion for the NFL Draft as you do!
@@bradsikorski8371 Appreciate it man!
Great analysis. Incredibly informative. Absolutely loved it.
Appreciate you 🙌
The hate for Michael Penix Jr. I will never understand. He is an absolute stud
I mean they explained his weaknesses pretty well
The interpretation that any kind of criticism of anyone is "hate" I will never understand
It's the injuries man. No matter how much you like his tape, it's hard to see his medical history combined with his kind of small frame and not be concerned about his ability to stay healthy long term
The guy has undeniable arm talent but he also struggles to make reads which leads to him spraying balls all over the field. He also can’t read defenses pre snap which leads to him getting in trouble with pressure from the dline a lot. Plus he’s had four severe injuries and he’s already 23 years old
Just wanted to give you guys some love for the content you're putting out. Y'all came across my timeline a few months ago and I gave you a chance cuz I seen you independantly with Simms and more importantly Uli. I've been along for the ride since.
The episode we’ve all been waiting for
Man it was tough to hold off until today after seeing this pop up in the feed last night but the perfect morning routine involves NFLSE in the background
I can’t say it enough, I love your guys’ content. Your styles compliment each other and the content is extremely high quality. Please keep doing what you do 💪
Hell yeah, glad it comes off well. We have a blast doing it!
So refreshing to hear deep dive QB analyses that doesn't originate inside the current relentless Hellscape of the Fields/Caleb war within Bears nation. Just facts, data, tape and analysis without the extra emotion and narratives. LOVE IT.
Another great show guys! Thanks for the content as always 🤗
Would love to know despite team draft spots because of how season played out, where would these QBs be best utilized based on their skill sets?
I'm supposed to get up early for work tomorrow, but there is absolutely no way I'm letting this wait😍
As always, loved the pod guys. Went full addict mode and re-listened to the round 1 reaction from 2023. Ngl most of the takes were bang on for this year. Some of my favourites:
Marvin Harrison Jr. “you are an Arizona cardinal”
Trevor-“The lions will pick Brian branch and Hendon hooker in round 2”
Conor- “I knew Forbes would go top 24 but he was 59 for me”
Eagles being the perfect landing spot for Carter
Big fan of the pod from the UK, looking forward to the rest of draft season!
Can’t wait to watch this now that I’m off of work
IF yall went to 3 episodes, im not sure of the prep time but even a short weekly episode of no notes, or maybe just a weekly Q&A for 30-45 minutes would be awesome. Appreciate what yall are doing keep it up!
Great summary of the main QB prospects. Hope Trevor will give us some insight on his new model for the QB evaluation, when we have seen those QBs one year in.
Love the pod man❤
LFG
I LOVE THIS SHOW AND THESE GUYS!
Appreciate you!!
@@TampaBayTre I appreciate you and Connor more. SHOUT OUT MICHAEL WILSON!
@@VictorGarciaJrthat was so cool. I always wondered how much players listen to football content outside of their own lives. Turns out for some it's quite a bit.
@@zackhurwitz9441 definitely awesome makes me a fan of Michael Wilson even though I'm a bears fan.
Thank you!
Based on the way you've described the schedule idk if this is possible, but would love to see the pre-combine drafts you guys did last year picking who would be the best at every event!
Bold take to put McCarthy at qb2 but I see the vision.
Jokes aside, I don't think him at QB2 would be that crazy. He 100% would benefit from sitting for a bit to develop, but I could easily see him end up being the second best QB in the class a few years from now. Both Maye and Daniels have decent bust potential. Maye due to pocket awareness and inconsistent accuracy and Daniels...well, we'll have to see how well he can play in structure without an all star team of an offense around him.
With Justin Fields unfollowing the Bears I’m forcing myself to watch this and get excited about Caleb 😢
Cult is falling apart
@@W4ST3DAZNamen
if you want to get jazzed over caleb matt waldman has a pretty good film breakdown on YT
Caleb massively overrated but at same time is a franchise qb. I think Russ Wilson a far better comp than Patrick mahomes though tbh. Not bad considering what Russ was but leaves a bad taste hearing it now. The guy will struggle with turnovers between fumbles and ints first year if I have to guess, only because holds the ball far to long and plays hero ball abit. If I were a bears fan I’d want them to trade back to 3 take mhj and maybe bolster the oline or def later on
@@GWO90tbh I think it’s tough to pass on Caleb since you get the rookie contract and he has a higher upside than fields does currently. I like fields a decent amount, but it’s taken to long for him to develop. If they aren’t sure he’s the guy by now, it’s probably a sign to move on and reset to clock
Man, that Michael Pratt scouting report sounded really similar to Brock Purdy's coming out ( you mentioned this at the end).
I'll be curious to see how he does, maybe more credit needs to be given to players who have lots of experience, play well with anticipation, can scramble a bit and are accurate with touch even if they dont have great physical measurables. Theses throws you need to be able to make to be an elite NFL QB don't seem to come up in practice as much as in theory. As Purdy has shown, anticipation can make up for a big arm a bit to make the outside throws too.
I hope the Jets take him in a later round. Sit beside Rodgers and step into QB1 later
If Pratt didn’t have the drop off in accuracy he did after his injury, I’d be VERY intrigued by him as a Top 50 guy. I am a sucker for guys who can throw with that kind of touch. I just don’t know how much of a part that injury (which I don’t think will be a long term thing) affected him - or if he was just on a hot streak before then
Parcells used to have a rule that he wouldn't draft a QB unless he started 30 (I think) games in college. The game is a bit different now where 1 season as a starter can lead to a decent career, but experience definitely matters.
Amazing breakdown on the QB’s and love the use of data. Since the Bears have the first overall pick I’d be curious to hear your breakdown of Justin Fields and his first 3 years in the league with a comparison to Caleb.
Rattler in switching from Air Raid at OU to Pro Style at SC has already experienced the growing pains of that transition and the fact he did it in college means he probably won't have to suffer through them in the NFL. Rattler is as you say versatile, he's played both the Air Raid and the Pro Style, this helps for in game adjustments. He's already played from under center and the fact he's experienced adversity both on and off the field - is a plus moving forward. The fact he made a schematic transition should not be overlooked. Rattler is my QB5 and he goes early day 2.
Rattler imo will be great in the pros
As a steeler fan I skipped this episode when it first came out. Back watching now after everything that went down this week😂
Almost a 2 hour beast and im all here for it
HERE WE GO
JJ came into the combine at 10 pounds bigger than they thought it would take a year to do.
That's the thing with him. He is very young, just turned 21 and he is extremely competitive and works incredibly hard to improve where he is weak at, as seen my how much better he was with his footwork. He is going to surprise so many people.
Caleb Williams has great field vision, touch on his passes, and body control. The same things you would say about Patrick Mahomes but thats a lot of pressure him to live up too.
Would love to see a top 10 list per position!
Could you do an episode over what drills and tests are the most important to watch for the combine?
The playing down of the RB class, I thought it would be a bunch of 5th rounders but I like the RB class .
It’s actually not *as* bad as its reputation. I agree, some second round guys, a lot of third and fourth rounders. It’s not terrible
intro song goes hard
Yall talked about how Caleb's avg time to throw was high partly due to a few very high outliers. Wondering if you have any stats on median time to throw for comparing these prospects
Let’s goooooo🔥🔥
Trevor, does Penix throw with his upperbody because of his true mechanics or as a reaction to his lower body injuries? Does that show up in his pre-injury tape?
We need to find out which one of them was the best short stop in high school and rank them from there. Can't take a QB who wasn't awesome at baseball in Rd 1
There was a time when I was a Justin Fields guy. I thought "hey, let's trade the pick, get a great WR in this draft and more future capital." But that ship has sailed I look forward to seeing what Caleb can do in a Bears uniform with DJ Moore and hopefully Nabers or Odunze. Fun times ahead in Chitown.
Where did you guys rank Jordan Travis last year prior to his injury?
And if he hadn’t been injured, how much higher up do you think he would be right now?
Would he be a top 5 pick overall?
This podcast is so based. That fairly odd parents reference went so hard 😂😂
1:16:45 thank you for acknowledging the thing most won’t. Most scouts compare players to people of the same race which can limit how we look at prospects. Idk if it the Heat or Magic but ;it’s a Florida team, they don’t allow same race comps. I thought this was a smart way to make people think a little harder. And now say that white shooter reminds me of Kyle Korver or that fort black guard with has a Iverson crossover lol.
I think that Trevor puts slightly more emphasis on negatives and Connor puts more emphasis on strengths. They compliment each other beautifully.
What do you think about Penix in a play action shot system? I think that’s his best fit and I kind of love him I’m Pittsburgh
What do you guys think about the bears trading from 1-2 to get picks and then draft Drake Maye?
Grind time fellas 👷🏻♂️👷🏻♂️… I need position rankings and mock drafts like no other!!! U could even do the position rankings to 20! I like a lot of sleepers in this class for WR and CB 👀
Can we get a Pod about a player to every team that fits really well? Doesn't need to be first-round guys. But one for me is Cade Stover to the Bengals.
i'm surprised none of you guys had Jordan Travis in your rankings. To me he's pretty solid number 7 outside of the clear top 6 QBs. Not the biggest arm but reads the field really well, makes good decisions and is experienced considering he has been a good starter for Florida State for 3 years and played really well against good teams like LSU and Clemson.
I had Travis at 9. He is a CFB gamer. Type of dude you’d want on a CFB team - evidenced by his success there. But his smaller measurables show up in a lot of ways: full body throws, inconsistent mechanics, on his toes to throw MOF, etc. I actually thought I was going to like him more than my eventual film grade. He’s fun, just not confident he has the physical gifts for the pros
@@TampaBayTre aight i respect that
@@TampaBayTre really? I thought Travis was at least in line with Nix in terms of physical talent. Obviously he's mobile, and I've personally seen him rip some shots down the field. The only thing that might drop him is injury concerns as an older player.
This is a fascinating case study because, aside from Caleb Williams, it feels like the remainder of the top 6 guys are all very, very close. Here’s how I see it:
- Caleb Williams - best pure arm and playmaking talent
- Drake Maye - best intangibles
- Jayden Daniels - best explosives and rushing
- Bo Nix - best accuracy and game management
- Michael Penix - best arm strength and pocket passer
- JJ McCarthy - jack of all trades, master of none (needs time to develop, as Connor emphasized)
McCarthy is the one with all the intangibles, Drake Maye went 17-9 as a starter. Maye is the Prototype. Size, Arm, pocket presence, physicality. McCarthy is a pure winner. Even in his only loss, he was incredible the last 50 minutes in a shootout game. 27-1 as a starter = intangibles up the wazoo
@@discostew420intangibles have nothing to do with win-loss record, which is a team stat. McCarthy was on one of the most well-rounded teams and had two NFL-caliber runningbacks at his disposal to run his offense, not to mention a stacked offensive line and defense AND two WRs that have shot up the draft boards in the past month. He doesn’t deserve all the credit. Maye was on a far worse team. Both Maye and McCarthy are highly competitive and love the challenge of a tough opponent, but Maye is just bigger and stronger and more of a playmaker from what we’ve seen on tape, hence the better intangibles. He’s the prototypical modern NFL QB of this draft with his size and playstyle. I think they both have a lot of development to be had, but I’m taking Maye over McCarthy any day.
@@timrc417 brother, "bigger and stronger and more of a playmaker" are literally tangible things... Intangibles are the clutch gene, the ability to step up and make plays when your team needs it. Did you watch the Rose Bowl? or Ohio State the last 2 years, or the TCU game after 2 pick 6's, came back and was absolutely spectacular. I don't think McCarthy is the number 1 QB but the narrative on him is wild. He is absolutely a playmaker. Yards per attempt and Air Yards per attempt and turnover rate show he pushes the ball downfield, doesn't make mistakes and does what his team needs to win games. Intangibles. 6'5 230 with a big arm is not intangible.
Drake Maye narrative is a lot like Justin Herbert in college. They nitpicked him to death and then acted shocked when he was pretty good whereas Burrow and Tua they weren't nearly as hard on. Not saying Herbert is better than Burrow because Burrow is top 3 imo but Herbert was under a microscope for some reason.
@discostew420 I apologize for making the argument even remotely about size, as yeah that is very tangible lol. That's on me for the boo-boo. However, I still think Maye stands out more to me as the fiery playmaker of this class. The "win at any cost" guy. Yes, McCarthy took care of the ball much better - which is also a huge deal - but as Connor and Trevor mentioned, Maye didn't really have a choice sometimes. He was forcing throws all year because his offensive line was soup and had to get rid of the ball in an attempt to prevent the play from blowing up. McCarthy had THE best offensive line in football and was able to sit back and cook because of it. I think Maye is the fiery prodigy of this class and McCarthy is his younger brother.
McCarthy is absolutely a playmaker, I'm not suggesting otherwise. He deserves some credit, but I don't think it's fair to Michigan to say that he's the reason they won the Natty this year. It's like Brock Purdy on the Niners; he didn't lose them games, but he also didn't win them (I'll give him the Ohio State games from 2022 and last season. He balled out in those games). (For the record, I'm not saying McCarthy = Purdy. They are very different QBs and I think McCarthy will be a better QB if he has some time to develop). Again, he had the best runningback tandem and offensive line in the country and had a defense that stifled opponents and made up for his mistakes when they happened. As far as the narrative goes, I think a lot of people just wished they had seen more. He has fleeting glimpses of his potential because he never had to be "the guy." His sample size for playmaking and eye-popping throws is like a quarter of the size of everyone else in this draft except for like Bo Nix. That's what makes him a tricky eval and ultimately a risky draft choice. He very well could be the best QB in this class, but nobody knows because he hasn't had to show it.
We will see the player strengths and weaknesses next week at the combine 😊
Does Conner think jets could trade back to get Fuaga and a 3rd round pick and use that pick on Spencer Rattler to sit behind Rogers?
I just need Drake Maye to somehow land in Chicago...
this kid has the it factor and will finally fix their QB problem..
ITS TIME!!!
Interested if you guys have heard any buzz on Jordan Travis? Ik he wasn’t gonna be a high pick even before the injury but if I was a team throwing a dart at the qb board I might take him over Pratt
He's probably a day 3 flier but he'll definitely be drafted. Agree with Travis over Pratt too
These NFL combine performances are about to be S I C K.. these guys can throw the football
Have you guys done any DII/DIII/HBCU guys?
Love the show guys, but can we work on how to say frustrated?!? Lol
Bonjour ! Just wanted to say hi guys, love the show from french speaking Montréal, QC ⚜
@nflstockexchange thoughts on joe "overthrow" milton? keep hearing he could make a switch to TE in a weak class
He’s just not accurate enough imo. Had the chance to earn staring roles at Michigan and Tennessee and failed to do so (remember Hendon Hooker beat him out for that job). I’m not sure I like him enough as a lateral athlete to say for sure he could make the position switch, but from what we have seen he doesn’t have starting QB finesse
He should've done it when Hooker was the QB. He'd probably be a top 2 round pick at TE. tbh I'd be weary of a guy with that much potential and so many opportunities in college and couldn't really do much with it.
How concerned should we be about Caleb Williams’ time to throw and pressure to sack % (each of which ranked in the bottom 25% in college football)?
as a bears fan I couldnt be more hyped for next season. I liked that you said Caleb is unfairly being judged against perfection beacuse thats completely true and it seems like JF is being judged only against the horrible qb play of the franchises past. Seems like a no brainer pick to me.
they interviewed McCarthy and they had scouted that play with the specific defender, and he knew he would turn his head to run with the receiver.
Great show, but if you have Penix as QB #3 in this draft idk what you're thinking
Bo Nix rocks and will shock the NFL!
McCarthy did know about the defenders tendency to turn his back. They went over it in film.
He also looked to the right just a bit to pull the robber slightly out of the zone to create the lane.
100% agree with you gents, please please please take Maye at #2 Commanders!
I agree. I’m pretty sure they will.
I truly believe he’s going to be the pick. I’m fine with it, too. Seeing highlights is one things. Seeing film is another. Some cons to his game is frustrating and can be fixed. His pros are crazy. The throws I’ve seen him make are unbelievable.
@@1Dub79 yeah basically my view on him as well. His strengths to me are the most likely to translate well to the NFL
Lots of LB needy teams! When’s that episode coming out?
Jj weighed in at 220 at the combine they said it a take a year he did it in a couple months 💪
Williams, JD5, Bo Nix, Drake Maye, Penix
Trevor Sikkema's pro comp for Caleb Williams given his backyard playmaking ability: Pablo Sanchez
All those throws by the so called “clear #2” for only 2 more tds than jj as well as some terrible decision making that shows up frequently along with bad/infrequent accuracy is why people aren’t as impressed with maye. His tape this year is bad at worst or erratic at best this year
Buddy of mine said mccarthey comp is drew lock and I can’t unsee it since
Thing only thing that makes you measure Caleb against perfection is the people who say he’s the best QB since those of Lawrence, Luck, and Manning. The hype around him makes you nitpick him.
Ive been saying, I want the vikings to trade back into the 1st at around pick 30 and take penix. Classic 5th year option move
Oh yesss
Thank y’all for giving some in depth analysis to Maye, I’ve seen some really oblivious people who CLEARLY didn’t watch him play at all last year saying some of the most brain dead stuff about him. “His arm isn’t a strong point for him, he’s not that mobile,” kind of things. The worst thing that I’ve been seeing and it’s been semi consistent even, is that he’s only rated so highly because “there apparently has to be a highly rated white QB every year.” Belittling the body of work that he’s put out at the collegiate level as not the reason for his hype but just being a white QB.
I'm excited for a full season of AR. However I think Caleb and Maye will be studs. The rest not so confident
I think for everyone after Williams Maye and Daniels, it's way more about the system. For example, if Nix gets with Sean Payton, it's going to get nasty. Nix's anticipation and mobility could be a pain in the back for teams in that scenario.
I don't know what Connor is on about, go watch him rip shots at Troy Franklin, all last year. I think he has a B to B+ arm. Easily in line with Kirk Cousins or Dak.
Bears fan here. I'm looking at your top 12 draft spots, and most people see Bears picking a WR at their own spot at 9. Who do you guys see the Bears drafting there? I don't see a WR in their easy grasp.
For April Fools, y'all should find a way to get players from Blue Mountain State into the mock draft simulator
I love it but we want to here about 9 throught 15 !
Penix scares me when the field gets narrow in the NFL that sideline stuff is going to be a lot more congested
And Rome Odunze isn't under all those deep passes.
Penix the most underrated qb by far this draft. Crazy that the nfl doesn’t value the one thing that a qb has to do well more now(passing). If this guy gets on the right team with good X WRs and decent to good oline watch out. Meanwhile Bo nix becomes the 2nd coming of Alex smith lol
I might be delusional but I love Bo Nix. I don't understand the non-love he gets. I think he has elite nfl-traits, really good arm, good mobility, great feel in the pocket. He's my number 2 best qb in the draft
Caleb Williams is Russel Wilson with a little bigger arm
Drake Maye reminds me of Herbert
Jayden Daniel’s reminds me of Fields
JJ reminds me of Purdy
Jj is a fast purdy
I don't understand how Caleb Williams gets to pick #1 overall, let alone QB1. Mechanics? Sure. Arm strength and accuracy? Sure. But when I look at good-to-great NFL QBs, I see a trend - they are over 6'2", do well under pressure, and can go through their progressions quickly. Or they have athletic, rushing upside. So consider this: Among the top 6 QBs this cycle: McCarthy, Nix, Penix, Maye, Daniels, and Williams. Caleb was the worst under pressure and took the longest time to throw. Where Maye would make a typical 3-step drop out of shotgun, Caleb would take 5-. So I'm left wondering in what system is he going to get 3.2 seconds to throw? On what team is having the worst grade under pressure going to benefit him? On what team will 16 fumbles over a 12-game stretch help him? Among the top-6 QBs, he only surpasses Penix and Nix as a rusher. So how he gets to this unquestionable QB1 rating is beyond me - let alone the first overall pick. There are plenty of doubts for me.
If Penix doesn’t stick with one team I can see him becoming the next FitzMagic
Let’s go! Who would be a good fit for my desperate and forever torturous Vikings?
I like Daniels, Nix or McCarthy tbh. All good running option guys, which I feel could take a KOC offense next level
A trade for JF so my bears can get two wins a year for the next five years.
Nix is the most NFL ready. In the case they don't bring back Cousins though they should.
I’m all in on Spencer rattler! He’s got that dawg in him that NFL locker rooms and pregame huddles need!
You are getting us excited about Maye.
Do you believe Caleb's game will still translate well agànst NFL defenses. You mentioned how he struggled against tougher defenses in AZ and Notre Dame.
Trevor has his guys and you can tell
Lol yep. Putting Penix at 6 is definitely a choice
McCarthy is this years Malik Willis. I remember people saying Lions should take him over Hutchison at pick #2 overall and then he went in the 3rd round lol
Connor my man, finally someone has Penix as QB3 instead of the other lesser passers. Where would you draft Penix?
if he checks out medically, I'm ok taking him in the top 15. If you believe in a QB, that's the reasonable range.
@@connorjrogers same on that, ty for your response
I looked up. Qb hand size chart. Dak the only active nfl qb with bigger hands.
Where would aidan oconnell rank among these qbees?
