The Royal horse Artillery regiment was my grandad's Regiment. He also fought at the battle of the somme. He was gased quite badly. He would not leave his horse's. He would sleep at their feet to Help keep them safe and calm . The stories that our dad would tell us. When the war was over. When my grandad came home. Before he went up the stairs in the close where he lived was in Plantation Street. In Kinning park here in GLASGOW. It was known as Plantation. He stripped off his old uniform as it was covered in lice and fleas. There was an old white concrete sink in the back of the close. He got scrubbed as best he could and changed into a better cleaner uniform to see his parents.
Is this the annual stand-in by the Kings Troop to release the Household Cavalry for their summer break? The horses look, and sound, anxious. Hopefully they settle in quickly.
The two horses calling out to each other, 'Where are you? I'm here.' They are wondering where their herd members are. Their riders and the Cpl of Horses (?) are very attentive to their needs.
I guess these horses are more accustomed to working as a group. This single job must seem strange. At least they can still see and hear another horse close by. It will be interesting how the tourists handle the different horses. Like someone else said no one went rushing up to pat them. Shall enjoy the next month. 🇨🇦
This happens every year as the House Cavalry take their horses off the seaside for 4 week's holiday. RHA have Irish Draught Horses, best not to mess with them!
I truly feel for both horses and riders, for what they have to contend with. Some of the public are so ignorant, and have no idea just how strong these animals are. One quick swing of the head could snap your neck or at least do you an awful injury. The signs are there!!! Beautiful animals!!
OMG i love to see this uniform brings memories of grandad who was point rider on team with cannon in the 16th Hussars. And yes che was boss man in the palace Stables/stalls rsm
Thankyou for youre thoughts. I used to sit with him listening to old army life stories, some not so nice from both wars. War Horse was real enough for me as i know my gran had 18 irish Horses served from his family Farm in Ire. Yes, very proud and long live our british military pomp and spit n polish cos i loved bullin up me Boots. Proud of all, great life, and you never forget
aww bless stuck on the edge of a stinky road with even smellier tourists I'd be stressing too. Even so nice to see a bright bay gleaming in the sunlight
New Horses out front maybe? These might be more frisky that the black ones. Time will tell. They will still be able to kick and bite. Maybe not be as patient. Would the regular Horses and Guards be off to the coast on their 'holidays?'
Amazing. I didn't know that artillery horses were ever used for this purpose. You can tell it's not their regular gig, but they are doing a great job anyway. I'll have to try to find the background of these horses. It's interesting how they are the beautiful bay and broad through the chest for strength to pull the canon, etc. Whereas most of the cavalry horses are black or dark brown and taller. Anyway, hopefully the artillery soldiers are enjoying this (seemingly) rare duty.
It seems rare to us non British people. I was pleasantly surprised to see this. I am also glad someone explained why it is done. I will miss Arnie telling all the tourists off, lol. This is still a nice change. 🇨🇦
Good observations. The cavalry and artillery horses are all Irish Draught but, with the exception of the chargers for the officers and SNCOs, the King's Troop horses are shorter by about one hand, the shortest pair being harnessed closest to the gun carriage itself. The Household Cavalry select black horses by and large, but those of The Troop range from light bay to black, a team of the latter being used to tow the gun carriage at funerals. I, too, noticed the more lively interaction of the horses with the public. It will be quite a novelty for them compared to their usual duties and, for some at least, the first time they will have stood guard. It will be interesting to see if they change over the next 2 - 3 weeks. I'm sure the cavalry horses will return refreshed from their holidays at the seaside. Arnie will be back!
@@phoebus007Simply not correct - King's Troop horses are not "shorter by about one hand", as I've explained elsewhere - at least twice. The lead two horses in each gun team are the same size as the largest H Cav horses, but as these are ridden by NCOs they're not on sentry duty as that's only done by ptes / troopers / gunners so they'll only be seen at the daily ride in / out. Much the same for the centre pair although only some are ridden by JNCOs, while the rear pair, the wheelers, are the shortest and as they're always ridden by ptes / gunners they make up the majority of those doing sentry duty. ... and FWIW few SNCOs in King's Troop ride "chargers".
What beautiful horses! I love their whinnying as if to warn tourists to beware of entering their space, besides talking to each other. This should be interesting w/new horses and disrespectful tourists!😂😂
Household Cavalry are on summer camp in Norfolk,so temporarily relieved by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.( who provide ceremonial gun salutes with horse-drawn guns)
I did my National Service in 1952 in 2 RHA and never rode a horse. The officers rode horses for pleasure. We rode Tanks and Self Propelled Guns. Looking at the videos, the Guards horses and riders are bigger than the RHA horses and riders and more suited to guard duty. The RHA horses are smaller and I expect more nimble, for positioning the ceremonial guns. Maybe that's why they are fidgety.
They're fidgety because they're standing still. 0nly the centre and rear pairs in each team are progressively slightly smaller as it helps when turning, but as these are the horses predominantly ridden by gunners / ptes so doing most of the sentry duties they all look smaller.
Are there records or old b/w fotos of the regiments that served at the palace? I have some oldies of gran and some of the reg, also with the mascots a great dane called shops cos he went to the mess to get the sandwiches. And my grans irish wolfhound. @@paulgraham3012 thankyou, yes i know, but was'nt really what i was meaning. Some of the disbanded regiments still have old group fotos hanging around, it was a curiosity, but not on uniforms really.
They're the same breed and the same range of height - around 16 hands, from 15.2 to 16.2 or 3, but there are more smaller horses as those in each gun team are different sizes: the lead two are 16 - 16.2, the centres are 15.3 -16, and the rear two, the 'wheelers', are 15.2 to 15.3. The sizing helps for some of the displays and ceremonials.
@@daylehudson6810 The range of height is still the same, within two or three inches either way of 16 hands, but there are simply more at the shorter end on sentry duty. In H Cav they're allocated arbitrarily regardless of rank so you get a representative mix. In King's Tp their height dictates their position in the gun team: lead, centre or wheeler. Lead horses are ridden by NCO's so they don't do sentry duty, while centre and wheelers are ridden by gunners (pte's) who do. If you see the ride to guard mount, especially if it's a Long Guard, you'll get the same spread of height, but those on sentry will be the centre and wheeler horses / soldiers.

Thank you sharing this story. He clearly loved both his horses and his parents very much. Glasgow people are strong!
Another story of the reality of what they went through. Thankyou, heartwarming
How proud you must be.

Wonderful memories of a brave soldier..My uncle was also gassed, but as never talked about it, I've no idea if he was with horses, sad to say...
As always stunning and beautiful. Proud is what is written over the horses and guards . Stunning when a country is proud of who they are.
As always, stunning in every way. I love hearing the horses 'talk' ❤️
Is the horse telling them stay away, good 😊💯
They are amazing the uniforms and the horses it’s nice to see them😀
Beautiful horses and very vocal
Very vocal indeed!
Beautiful horses I am glad people left them alone for a bit to settle as they where chatting away bless them
Love these beautiful horses, not going put up getting mauled by disrespectful tourists 👏 There commanders seem more intuitive to guards and horses.👏
Just marvellous to hear the horses talk keeps the touchy tourists away
So lovely to see the Royal Artillery Soldiers and their beautiful horses
Notice the tourist didn't rush up to pet them either. That's the way it should be.

This Regiment is such a Handsome group. Coloration of their horses are beautiful and uniforms are so Regal.
And good to see so many female guards.
Now that's a Uniform!
Yes, isn’t it awesome!
They all have history going back 1000s of years and it is all relative. The history of the uniforms is well worth a read!!!
Stunning isn't it.
This was my grandfather's regiment.

With "Lady Guards" in charge; there seems to be a much more cordial atmosphere around there!👍
