I can attest to the paint spy’s abilities. Just today it saved me from a $16,000 used Lexus. The carfax was clean with no damage reported and the salesman confirmed it was accident free. Well the paint spy proved that in fact the entire passenger rear door was repainted and had some bondo work. Definitely an accident there. Great job with the paint spy, I’m a firm believer.
Amazing, I'm from Canada and in our province it was estimated that more than 50% of all used cars sold at used car lot dealers were Salvage vehicles from the states that were purchased from auctions. This vehicles were considered Salvage by their respective States, however their condition was acceptable and considered okay by our local equivalence of your DMV as long as they were repaired and rebuilt in a decent way those vehicles were given a rebuilt title on them and although dealers have to provide proof and receipts of the repairs and parts. Some of them are Bondo buckets and very questionable in regards of safety. That spy stick would help greatly if people only knew about those cars and this tool. Needless to say I'm getting one. Greg I follow your videos all the time, thank you for the hard work you truly are a car angel.
Hope this helps you and other people here. Canada has better laws in term of rebuilt / salvage vehicles than the States. In Canada you cannot rebuild and register a vehicle that was involved in a flood. Any flood, doesn't matter if very low water or not (obviously, if it was reported and had Flood Salvage title). In the States you can. Other thing is, once the (reported) salvage vehicle was repaired, it needs to have a special safety check and not all mechanics can do it. I think it has to go on a frame machine and be measured. I forgot what it was called. Also, the rebuilt salvage vehicles will have a "Rebuilt" title on the ownership. On the other hand, there are a lot of vehicles that were involved in an accident, but it was never reported, therefore these vehicles will have a clean title. Even salvage car auctions have many vehicles for sale with clean title, but the vehicles have substantial accident damage, including side curtain airbags deployed and what not. Those are the vehicles you need to keep an eye on, as you don't know the vehicle history. If the car was rebuilt but it doesn't have a Rebuilt title, nor it shows on Carproof or CarFax, the dealer has no obligation to disclose the information. And, to be fair, they might even not be aware of it. I also think there are some laws protecting the buyer if purchased a clean title rebuilt vehicle from the dealer, but the dealer wasn't aware of it and the buyer finds out later.
Excellent video. my brother had showed me these tips in the past but I made a mistake of buying an unwashed car and during a cloudy day. the moment I drove it home a week later my brother looked at it and started wiping it out and showed me where the car has been hit and painted. You guys have amazing skills to immediately know if the car has been painted or not.
Big thanks for sharing your knowledge. My wife and inspected a vehicle we were ready to pull the trigger on - you saved us from our own ignorance. CarFax was clean and, supposedly, so was the vehicle. By using your techniques we're glad to say we're not owners of a lemon. The Passenger-side quarter panel had been repaired many years ago - the paint clear-coat was peeling on just that side, the gaps weren't right, the panel screws were scraped, and inside the passenger door revealed more of the same. Now we're getting some paint spy's (one for each of us) so we can be even more prepared as we continue our used vehicle search. It's almost become a game to us. Thanks again, #YourCarAngel.
I don't like re-painted cars (especially when they had to use filler) but I don't think it's such a big issue if the car is cheaper than the undamaged car would be. If the airbags weren't deployed, and there's no damage to key structural elements it's all good. I don't think a scratched door is an indication that the entire car is going to have some massive problems. Scratches sometimes happen. If the car's cheaper and you know what was damaged and how severe it was it's fine.
You should have more subscribers, I buy and sell cars professionally, and you are the only youtuber who seems to know all of my secrets!! - post an email for paypal donations, because youtube doesn't pay squat any more. I am buying your Paint Spy! - Does it have a rubber bumper to not mar new paint on expensive cars?
If used correctly the Paint Spy does not mar the surface. Always be courteous and ask permission if it is a private seller. If it is a dealer then i just go about discretely checking the panels.
My friend buys crashed cars fixes them and sells them crash free. There are few other tricks to mask crash history. The black screw can be painted and the fender can be replaced with original color. There is only one way not to get scammed. Just buy crashed car and fix it yourself.
I'm thinking of purchasing Paint Spy myself. When I go to dealers to inspect cars, I sometimes I have to ask the dealer if I can use my dealer diagnostic computer to scan the entire car. I was just with one of my buddies as I'm his Mechanic as we went to a dealer and the car salesmen was in the car with us during the test drive. So I had to ask him if I can use my scan tool and they were fine about it. That's how you know that its a good reputive dealer if they have nothing to hide. Most dealers I went to generally doesn't have the car salesmen in the car with you during a test drive which I can go about my business using my scan tool.
I need a Paint Spy but you are showing to be out of stock. Will you have any available any time soon? Been looking for a personal vehicle for 6 months and I just can't trust what I'm seeing. My sister wants me to buy from Carmax, but I don't trust CarFAX. Please, if you have an extra one laying around, I'll buy it!
This is a very informative video that I will apply in my upcoming car search. A good video showing how to get good values out of cars with small damage or salvage titles for those of us that are poor would be very welcome. Case in point is my 1995 Avalon. I bought it with 56k miles on it. It now has 250k. Recently I looked into getting paint to fix dings and little rust spots. To my surprise, the color code on car was a completely different color. So car had been repainted! It also shows it had bondo applied on trunk because nicks in paint have revealed a layer of filler beneath. Point being, if I had known all this I would not have bought the car. But it has been a great car!
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Dorian Nixon i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Even before looking at paint there is very clear panel gap issue on the "good side", quite clearly bonnet doesn't align with the fender, quite a stark contrast with A-pillar/fender gap.
Car Salesman: Hi, there. Are you interested in this car? Greg: I'm shooting a video for UA-cam to assess the legitimacy of.....I mean, yes! Yes, I am. Actually, I'm just browsing your lot to see what you have in your inventory. Car Salesman: Sure, no problem. My name is David if you have any questions. Greg: Okay, thanks David. *I dodged 200 bullets just a minute ago. Whew!
Very useful. I'm mystified as to how the Paint Spy works though. Also, I wish the reputable dealers would spend more time evaluating the ones they take in (I know the fast buck guys would never) so we don't have to. I've been shopping mine around as a trade and they don't even take it out on the open road, just drive around the block. They don't ask me questions about the history. Therefore I trust no dealer of used cars.
Excellent info again. I fixed my car paint once and I know how difficult it is to make the fix undetectable. Btw, CarAgnel, are you related to Rick Springfield and David James Elliot ? You three are so much alike.
Is it so bad to buy a car that has been resprayed for cosmetic reasons? Some sellers seem to think that their orange peeled, faded and oxidized factory paint is worth more than a resprayed one
I have a 2009 is250 bought it wrecked in 2010 it had around 14k miles now it's at 70k miles problem free and paint is not an issue and I also used bondo too when I did the repair...
What happens if you would buy a car which either has been in an accident or is mechanically bad and you have signed the, as is, thing . So you have any rights what so ever ????? Thank's for another great video .
Say you still were interested in the car and were OK dealing with a crook, how much percenatge-wise would you discount this vehicle? if little else seemed amiss?
Hi Greg,How effective is the paint spy on classic cars say mid 1970's and below? I would assume materials and paint depth was far different back then etc. Thanks for the videos and effort you put in, it is very helpful!
I like your videos but i don't agree with that about aftermarket being inferior to original parts. Back in 90's or early 2000 original was truly better but nowadays vehicles come with very cheap from factory parts.
Cool video but most wont let someone rub a vehicle over with an object or hands. I know i wouldnt if i was selling my own and mine was not in an accident.
Over half of cars from 5 yrs and older have had a respray.I've been in the car trade for over 20 yrs and seen slight scrapes that needed new paint work .No need to panic folks, sheesh! It's wheather it's in the "Cat" list you gotta worry about as that knocks a hell off the valuation. My car had a scrape from the fender to the back and it wasn't in a knock!
Juliette Rogers see I’m not too sure about the whole Carfax thing either because I looked at an 06 Pontiac Grand Prix that had obviously been in a wreck, the front bumper was a gloomy white whereas the rest was pretty much plain ole white, and to beat it all the bumper they put on was so cheap that it didn’t have the indentation for the Pontiac logo!
Sir, great content but IMHO you are looking at used car as is brand spanking new cars. If potential buyer is scared, it`s better to recomend buying a new car
Good info except that no one is going to allow you to be using that tool on the body of their car like this guy is doing. A private seller is just going to balk about that, if not kick your fucking ass for doing it.

Even before looking at paint there is very clear panel gap issue on the "good side", quite clearly bonnet doesn't align with the fender, quite a stark contrast with A-pillar/fender gap.
That was because I had the hood unlatched so that I could lift it up during the video. There was no gap issue.

As a lot of people know, a Car Fax report is generated through police accident reports , no police , no report .
Man, great videos. Second one I’ve seen. You sir have earned my subscription.
Wow, excellent video !!!
I really like the Paint Spy !!!
Thank you for your videos !!!!!!
Knowledge is power I would’ve bought it with the bashed up door I could’ve use it as a bargaining chip
I assume this car came through as a clean car fax ? Because god knows car fax is never wrong .

Shockingly it had a clean Carfax.Go figure.

Appreciate your channel immensely. Thank you for your expertise.
Do you have any intentions of selling the paint spy outside of the US? To the UK?
Excellent insight, thank you 👍🏻
Wish I had access to this knowledge earlier in life
**pulls out the paint spy** what the heck... it works?
Excelent video!!! I was wondering ... where can you get that paint spy? Love the way you explain in such detail !
Sir what do you call to your pen like instrument to identify the factory paint / repair paint? thank you boss..
Fantastic overview Greg. Love the Paint Spy. Wish it was available in the UK.
Is it so bad to buy a car that has been resprayed for cosmetic reasons? Some sellers seem to think that their orange peeled, faded and oxidized factory paint is worth more than a resprayed one
Get a digital tool to test the paint, it shows how many microns of paint the surface has.
where were when I needed you. Very informative
Millions of cars have repainted panels for alot of reasons, scratches, minor dents, fading etc dosnt mean the cars been in a wreck
This car had a whole side repainted.
That's staggering, most cars fail the inspection... Doesn't say a lot for the rest? 🤔

Hi Greg,How effective is the paint spy on classic cars say mid 1970's and below? I would assume materials and paint depth was far different back then etc. Thanks for the videos and effort you put in, it is very helpful!
Good tips!
Wouldn't the paint spy give false readings on aluminum body panels?
Your videos are tremendously helpful, thank you so much.
But how do you know if the car has just been repainted? and not an accident?
Would that paint spy show the same results if they replaced the panels?
Goddamn I really thought you were Jordan Peterson from first glance at the thumbnail!
Tried to buy your spy pen but you're sold out and it will not let me fill out the waiting list form

By the way: never buy a car if is raining...
William Wriglie why not?
TheRealVivia Because you see the paint of a car best when the sun is shining.
William Wriglie thanks for the tip. 🙏🏼
TheRealVivia You are welcome! By the way: which car brand is your favourite?
William Wriglie I literally just bought a 2009 cx-7 right now lol with 90k on it. First car. Got it for 4K.
Aftermarket paint is never as good as the OEM paint? Tell that to Subaru and Toyota. Their paint starts to chip in less than 500 miles.

The thing about the paintjob is good not true, if the Job has been done right its even better than original, less orangpeel texture.
