Drill out the brass plug covering the air/fuel mix screw on the carb then turn the flathead mix screw counterclockwise about a quarter turn to a half turn to richen up the air/ fuel ratio. These bikes all came lean from the factory to pass emmissions, that's what turns the exhaust blue or gold. If this isn't clear, just search "Mikuni BS40 air/fuel mix screw".

YES, very much so! Even intermediate skilled riders can enjoy this bike, I would recommend twisty, curvy roads for them. you can lean hard before you make contact with the foot pegs. The weight factor, I think, the S40 is very nimble easy handling, and a lower first gear for easy starts, better for beginners.

Higher octane does NOT cause lean burn, just easier to ignite in a higher compression engine like the S40 has ( they come from the factory running very lean) hence the bluing of the header pipe.
@@Big_John_C I think what I really meant to say is that it affects the ignition timing. I'm not sure how ignition is adjusted on motorcycles; but, on old cars, using higher octane fuel would require adjusting the distributor.

@@PhilHewkin Thanks for the reply. Has your son tried polishing the discoloration out of his pipe? I had a Virago 750 that had a blued pipe when I got it and I was able to remove all of the discoloration with a polish that was designed specifically for that problem. I've been considering a S40, but must admit I find the discolored pipe somewhat unattractive. I don't know if using a polish frequently might eventually do more damage than good.
@@hammy4949 No, My Son never tried that. We polished his s40 with plexus last week, he was impressed, he said he is ordering some. I thought the colors looked kind of cool, like a warning not to touch, it looks hot even when it is not. I bet a used one is the best option cost wise.
Wear the discolored exhaust pipe like a badge of honor. Looks beautiful to me!
The s40 looks a lot lighter more of a sportster feel in comparison to an ACE or an AERO. The shadow 750s might be a better comparison with a closer weight balance.
The 750 honda spirit is probably a closer match style, with the skinny front wheel, I think the spirit is 20-40 lbs lighter than the aero. However, I do not have a spirit, so I did the best I could with what I have.
I have both of these bikes too!
cool! same color? -first time I owned 2 bikes at the same time.
@@PhilHewkin no 2004 Aero 750 is a burgundy and the 2006 S40 is black. Was just riding the S40. Love the torque and effortless acceleration! I don't need a bike to get going any faster than it does. It is just right. So nice and light,as well as narrow. Controllable too. A great looking bike. Your two bikes are beauties.
@@antondahl8945 nice. I almost bought an 07 shadow, red, when this 2014 came up, same price. every time I hop on my s40, I am impressed with the maneuverability. I strive to keep within posted speed limits, my most enjoyable rides include not stressing about speeding fines.
I have both bikes! Shadow is way heavier bike in town ! I like s40 way better!
My s40 is same color lol
I broke my tailbone when I was a teenager just doing stupid stuff, it never feels the same after.
2nd time for me, first time healed up after 5 years or so, Its been 2 years now, I doubt it will ever be the same, as you say. Still got to ride, just not much over an hour at a time.
Ha, just wait until you get older and arthritis sets in.
Your S40 will benefit from a higher zinc content oil, such as Shell Rotella 15w40, due to an older cam design. Come and join us Thumpers at Suzukisavage.com. Lots of help, advice and some nonsense, ps; seems I live your neck of the woods, Surrey!
You are only 900 km away! I have been using synthetic AMSOIL 15-40 metric. Its about $15 per litre, I am hoping I am using adequate quality lube, I will look into that shell product though.
@@PhilHewkin here is the oil discussion. Bear in mind it's been going on for a decade or so, but Rotella is the consensus favorite; suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1344471565 Also, with a compression ratio of 8.5:1, any regular gas is OK.
I’ve got a few questions for my S40 that i’m planning on getting
I have a suzuki boulevard and a honda shadow amc
what year, color? Do you mean a shadow ACE?
Big Single is awesome.
agree
Would you reccomend the s40 for a beginner?
YES, very much so! Even intermediate skilled riders can enjoy this bike, I would recommend twisty, curvy roads for them. you can lean hard before you make contact with the foot pegs. The weight factor, I think, the S40 is very nimble easy handling, and a lower first gear for easy starts, better for beginners.
I bought an s40 as my first bike, and I love everything about it. It is enough speed to enjoy without getting in trouble and just a blast to ride.
I got the S 50 as my first bikeright now and I love it I believe the only difference is it my get up to 60 a little faster in my TopSpeed will probably be 140 instead of 120 oh whatever yours is basically all things that don’t matter they’re comfortable bikes I probablyShould have gotten the S 40 I’m only 5footfive 125pounds By the way my bikes get in there early 50 miles to the gallon but I mean I Drag race for a Weather since I was 16
It's called un-leaded
CORRECTION: The recommended fuel grade has to do with the IGNITION TIMING, NOT THE CARB SETTINGS.
Good to know, and, Thank you! I burn regular (87) works for me.
@@BEEBEE159 sounds like it is just cheaper, more practical to stick with regular gasoline.
My s40 isn’t as shiny as urs wow
PLEXUS! stuff works great.
Where do you get Plexus in Canada?
Why are you filming the grass. Thumbs down for you
