how to shift a dirt bike
telling us what gear your in on different parts of the track is a really good idea thanks for the good video
+Cormac Tracey cool, glad you like it!
sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
@Parker Noah Instablaster ;)
@Giovanni Ryder Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Giovanni Ryder it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account !
I really enjoy your videos man!!! Keep them coming. Great help for beginner riders to understand how to ride.
cool Cyle, glad you like it!
This is an amazing video and actually one of a kind. There are not many videos that show first person view while letting them know exactly what gear you're in. All the shifting videos are people off their bikes saying the same thing. "This is the stance you want, you don't have to use the clutch while down shifting, bring your foot back! Okay guys I hope that taught you how to shift this is all you need to know". This video is nice and simple but so helpful. It would even be great for beginners if it was not on a track. Getting use to what that sounds like, how often do you go into the higher gears. I think people hear the pitch fine but I think there not use to how loud the bike can get even when you don't need to up shift and makes you think you do.
It's like a dancing class 😂 but really it's useful on parts of tracks which gear should be used
I really like how you're telling us what you're doing while riding, we can benefit from that for sure :)
8:40-9:30 - Seems like you were tired already (didn't clear the tabletops).
What's the price to enter such MX track?
As always great video!
its $30 to enter.
yes i was getting bit tired :)
I wish we had some place like that here (we have only 1 track for the all country and you must have a valid racing license ...
The 450 is a beast for the forearms!
can you build a track in your backyard? I built one, maybe I can show you guys later on the video.
You can, for your own use I think there is no issues with that.
In my case I can't since I don't have a yard
That will be nice to see your own track :)
Definetly the best mx-youtuber. I love how you tell the viewer when you shift, for me as a beginner who does not own a dirt bike yet that is really great. Thumbs up, stay motovated.
+Viggo Ekmark thanks bro! Are you getting some bike soon?
Yeah, i think so. Im getting an 85 as soon as we get my grandfathers house sold, he passed away this summer.
+Viggo Ekmark sorry to hear about your Grandpa. Good luck my friend!
Thank you so much. I needed someone saying what gear they move to. Helped me so much.
Thanks Kaytlyn, glad it helps!
Great video as always. That was cool to see you talking about which gear you were in.
thanks bro, glad you like it!
Fastest guy at the track! 😎 Do you squeeze the bike with your legs? Sometimes it helps let you loosen your grip and get armpump less. And sometimes you still have armpump anyways haha
haha, definitely not fastest! I should squeeze it more, still need to work on that
+Dirt N Iron I didn't see you get passed by anyone though!! Ride on!
Awesome riding! Getting my first bike tomorrow and I’ve been watching your videos for weeks trying to see what i like and how to maintain my first bike! Keep up the content! Hopefully we can ride together i live in Riverside so not too far bud!
cool, congrats! what are you getting?
Was looking at a crf250 but the bike had issues. Had issues starting, swingarm was lose, wheel bearing was shot, chain and sprocket looked like it needed to be changed, I saw forks weren’t good they were leaking from the seals. Oil was dark. Filter was dirty. Looked like it wasn’t maintained!!! Im so glad i saw your videos i may have saved myself a disaster! I went with my gut and said no on buying it. Im a 370pd guy. I’ve been riding dirt bikes but i want to get back in them since i missed my old yz125. May look into an rmz or something else. Soon!
SupFam what is your weight and size? 250f = 125 two stroke pretty much. 250f it’s good entry level bike but you will grow out of it quickly and be wanting a 450f (250 2 stroke) in no time, I did. A 450f will do a 70-80ft fmx ramp double in 2nd. So on track it’s first and 2nd with no clutch work really needed. Another bonus of larger bikes is your not ringing every gear out so less stress on engine and will get longer life span.
Osmmm
Best on best
Super bro
Sir waiting for next clip
So nice bro
🔥🔥🔥🔥
You’re awesome.! Finally someone who literally says when they are changing and the gears they’re in! Thank you! Dirt and Iron is an awesome name by the way! Just got a kx85 (26 yr female 5 feet tall), I’m surprised how quick I’m progressing, thanks for the tips!
thanks :)
I am glad you find the video helpful, hope there are more vids on the channel that can help you out!
Thanks me too I’ll check it out ! I’m looking to post a video I took myself of me soon
you make it look all to easy dirt n iron. I remember when I used to push bike, I'd go hell for leather. once I'm on a dirt bike, I lose confidence, i factor in weight of the machine, physics and loss of time from work. like I love riding my MX bike, but have become such a wuss on it. it really annoys me. cos in my head I know I can do it!
not a bad thing to be careful, I try to push it little further each time I am on track, its not always working the way I want it
Love the play by play instructs, thx for helping us beginners ride better n stay safe.
thanks Joseph, glad you find it helpful!
Awesome thumbnail and video too. Pretty helpful too but I I’d have a lot of improvements to make to get to have to worry ab shifting.
you will get there sooner than you think
Great video! Liked how u were saying the gear u were in .. want to see that language vs on ur 2 stroke lol
yea, I need to take my 2 stroke to the track.. thanks for the feedback Joshua!
This ^^
I love that track....haven't rode is 20 yrs and that track would be a good one to get back into...I'm in process of getting a bike...wife is convinced or beaten down enough that there is no more battle as to I'm to old at 45 to do it...lol buying a bike for myself as well as my son and daughter so we can do it together...great video man..thanks
thats great Dave! what bikes are you guys getting? for MX only?
@@dirtniron all used bike but I'm getting a 09 klx 450, my daughter13 new rider is getting a ttr 125 and my son wants a yz 250f...wanna do trwck, trail and off road parks...alot in the area
sounds like a great plan! priceless family time ;) wish you all the best guys!
I gotta say though, doing donuts in snow in a side by side in a field at 6 in the morning while going to work is pretty fun also. And I just use the clutch like at all times cause it’s there so why not.
This superb helpful video training how to in very basic easy for beginner to understand. Thank man
Glad it was helpful!
I think i really good skill to learn is the seat bounce if your coming up to slow on a jump. 5:55 That's a good jump to seat bounce, also it feels so cool when you do it properly.
seat bounce is on the list of skills I want to learn! ;)
Thank you so much for this sir i needed this explanation
cool, glad it helps
Massive air at 5:00. Nice video
thanks Chris!
Thanks for telling us when to shift appreciate it man.
No problem 👍
thx so much now i know how to use clutch and when do i have to use it and shift grears thank you so much😁
I wish I had the confidence to launch myself into the air like that lmao
+AkaComeau start from little jump, it will come. It's easier than it looks
3 years later you got it down yet?
@@spare1700 yep. Still scared of an mx track but not afraid to send it blind up and over a hill climb 🤷♀️
Another good video. I like that you set a goal for the day and work on that.
thanks man!
Great riding tips for beginner's like me thank you, and you are fast for real
cool, I am glad it helps ;)
Great video! Nice tips and tricks while you are riding.. exactly What i was looking for. Thx man!
cool! thanks for feedback Stef!
Do you ever race in any motocross races ? That would be cool to see a video of you doing that. Great video ! Really helpful how you go through and explain it as your doing it.
not yet, I didnt try to race yet, it would be cool to try it one day. thanks for feedback bro!
Cool video, I️ like the perspective of you talking while riding. What track is this?
thanks bro! this is cahuilla creek MX vet track
Nice man! In the corner you go down to 1st. I would stay in 2nd and let off the gas and cover the rear brake. But each to their own I guess man. Great job! 🤙🏾
you are right Mark, I should not shift to 1st on this track, still learning. Thanks
Great video man, I hope you get to that 100K milestone soon
thanks man, appreciate it!
I love your videos man they are really helpfull 😀
thanks man!
Nice riding skills Rado, having fun, arm pump my biggest enemy also.
thanks brother, I need to ride mx more, I spend majority of time on trails these days..
Awesome post love to see more of this. Really helpful.
+eli trinh cool, glad you like it!
Awesome video man, keep up the great work, how’s the yz250f coming along? Next time you hit the track take that bike.
thanks man! yz250f is waiting for some parts, working on it little by little.. yes I plant to take her to the track once she is done
Dirt N Iron nice brother, are they upgrade or replacement parts?
replacement, carburetor needs few things
The video we all need.
Very helpfull man! Thanks
Please make a video about the good and bag things to look for when buying a used dirtbike! Maybe two separate videos?
Alana, thats exactly what I talk about in this video, have you seen it?
ua-cam.com/video/z6GCOAC_JXY/v-deo.html
That´s such a nice track! Way better than the ones near me here in sweden :(
Yeah, we got nice track in US. Specially in California
Awesome video!! Great content as always! Question? Most guys I know use the clutch on the upshift but not on the downshift. What about you?
thanks Ree! i try to use the clutch each time, but sometimes on downshift I dont use it.. very rarely though
Great video as always..
thanks bro!
Do you let go of throttle when you shift
I do little bit, but you don't need to I think
Do you need to shift when racing
I think so, although I have no race experience
Shifting without the clutch puts a lot of pressure on your transmission. So while it's definitely a technique for a race, when practice riding it's best to shift with the clutch and save the wear and tear on the tranny. Of course using the clutch to shift at all times is definitely something you'll also see elite riders do as well, a lot of personal preference in how you use the clutch on the track.
Sounds good John!
ua-cam.com/video/2D_XxTFrq4M/v-deo.html
Watch this guys -it's a must :)
John Doe I think they do ist cause they stay on the gas all the time (atleast on 250s) and otherwise the gears wont click in!
You can watch videos of what happens in a gear box when you shift without the clutch.
Nothing actually as long as you leave the throttle off for a moment. Watch the video I posted here :)
Thanks for this good idea dude!
no problem Sasa, glad it helps!
Good job !!!!
thanks!
Hi, please do this video with the sx 125. I would be interested in the changes. thanks
I will on yz125! thanks for the tip
Nice video, looks like you left your goggles on your bike on the way home
yep, I sure did, thank God they were still there when I arrived home. good eyes bro! ;)
What about no clutch on the downshift ?! #newrider so...was going up and down my block the other day, got the bike up to 3rd and 4th gear, approaching the corner (stop sign) I just let off the throttle, and smoothly kick the lever down one gear, then kick it down one more time, to be in 2nd gear, make my U-Turn and then give it some throttle to go to the other end of the block. Just practicing, I did this for about 20min. Hoping I'm not ruining my bike..
not I big deal downshift without the clutch on low rpm, I still touch the clutch for a second when switch the gears tho..
On a two stroke coming into the corners....you can downshift. But I see that they brake hard for a second to get rear to slide with arc to gas it. My question is... you have to pull in clutch equally with braking or else you stall the motor. Is this correct?
yes, you need to pull the clutch if you lock your rear wheel..
ahoj! great video mate! there's a part of the track where you shift all the way down to 1st gear? why? i'd like to ride in 1st on the track but its tricky for me...
Ahoj mate;)
There are some slow turns where I feel better in 1st gear. As I get better I think I will be able to have more speed and take those turns in 2nd.
Nice video
Watch out for this kid 😂
Hey great video! Just wondering what your accent is?
thanks Noah! I am from Slovakia originally.
Dirt N Iron Thats awesome! I’m form Canada I love your videos keep up the great work!
+Noah Brennan cool bro! I'll do my best :)
Great🤝
Excellent vid
thanks bro!
do you use front brake in corners or just back brake and engine breaking
i use both brakes, I am still learning to ride properly
@@dirtniron i have only rode maybe 10 times but never on a track and dont know much about speed into corners and that
@@dirtniron thankyou tho very helpful
Beginner here. Finding it really difficult to shift with my Mx boots. Can’t easily fit my toe in the space. Any tips?
I had similar problem, there are 2 things you can do.
1) move the shifter one notch higher see it that helps, but you dont want to have it too high either.
2) get new boots, usually entry level boots tend to be little more bulky in toe area..
good luck Darrell!
Great I’ll try that with the shifter. I do have the Alpinestars Tech 5 boots. I’m thinking about just using work boots and shin guards until I get better riding. I will do mostly woods riding. Great channel thanks!!
When do I change to 2nd gear? while entering the corner or midway thru the corner?
shift always before the corner
@@dirtniron thank you so much
Looks like a fun track, not dangerous.
450's are hard on arm pump if you don't ride a lot.
Its alwasy hard to tell on video, you should be able to ride that track in 3rd and use the clutch to get it going exiting corners.
I'm no pro but the 450 unless you are doing tight sharp corners can lug through anything.
yes its really fun track, only slightly dangerous part is that big step up. Rmz has little mellow bottom, I tried to stay in higher gear, but I found it more fun to shift down and exit the corner like that, I still clutch it in some tide corners. Perhaps as I get faster I can stay in 3rd gear more, I need to improve more. thanks for suggestion Scott!
What track is that? Looks fantastic.
its Cahuilla Creek in Anza
I'd like to ride that track. My friend rides there every weekend on a CR500. I hope to see you there around Christmas.
I should be there, reach out before you go, we can chase each other on the track 😉
Yeah, I'm a very old beginner. 😆
Man, u bust a nut, really nice riding and tips, I'm 1,93cm and weigth about 93Kg, what bike should I get? 250 2stroke? But I dont have almost not experience riding dirt bikes, just a ttr600 from my dad
Thanks dude. I think 250 2 stroke should be fine for you. Good luck!
do i drop the clutch or do i let it out slowly when i’m motion?
drop it fast
What gear should you be on flat land
depends on the terrain and whats coming
What track is this? thanks for the vid
Cahuilla Creek in Anza, CA
Dude on my 250 I have to carry so mach momentum I stay on the gas all the time and hust pull the clutch abit to be able to shift
yea, thats right.. on 450 you can be little bit "lazy" but 250 you have to stay on it all the time
Psh you think you have to be in the gas on a 250 try a 150
Do you use clutch when down shifting?
You dont need clutch for downshift. Clutch is only for upshifting . You can still use clutch to be extra safe tho
It snowed for the first time today so RIP to riding although I might send it in the snow.
time for some wrenching :)
Can i have question?😀How tall are you?:D I want to buy ktm exc but i think I will be to short for that bike because I am only 5'3
I am 180cm, almost 5'11
Dirt N Iron i was thinking you are something around 170cm 😂
just a little bit more :)
Does anyone know if u let of the gas while shifting
I do let of the gas little bit
What year is your rmz450?
+Trent Carter 2012
I always have trouble shifting up when standing, I have to sit, change up gear then stand again...
did you try playing with your shift lever, or maybe try different boots, sometimes the boots are too bulky and make it difficult to shift.
I’ll try adjusting the shifter up a few notches, it’s pretty level with the top of the foot peg...
Are you trying to shift by pivoting your ankle? When standing fully upright your shifting motions are different. Instead of rotating your foot upward, you should instead be keeping your ankle locked and basically just lifting your entire leg up quickly.
That said you may also want to adjust your shifter to mitigate how much motion is needed to shift. It should really be a very small movement of your leg upward.
Bischlarbo69 thanks dude I’ll give it a try 👍
No problem. Let me know if it helps
what is happening when my dirtbike is wanting me to shift gear to quick...
Your gearing is too short, if you want to change it you can drop a tooth on rear sprocket or add one on front. That would also make the bike to have less tourqe
ok thanks man.. can you make a video about cleaning the throttle when is sticking
Where do you ride ? We should ride some time
This is Cahuilla Creek, we can ride sometimes. Hit me up on Facebook or Instagram
what track is that?
cahuilla creek mx in anza, ca
Is your Ktm for sale
I didnt think about selling it. ...unless i get an offer I cant refuse ;)
What track is this?
Cahuilla creek MX
Make your grips fatter and you wont have that problem! Add tape!
Thanks for the tip, I use lock on grips which are little thicker than regular. My arm pump problem got way better, I try to work on my style, it helps quite a bit
If you wanna clear tabletops right after turns, get a Yamaha!
+Thereal36 I like it the hard way ;)
... seriously, I know Yamaha has more bottom punch, I really like how RMZ turns though
I don’t fully understand
downshift without clutch 🖒
yea, I would sometimes do that on low rpm
Hi can't l join u pse
My opinion at your level of riding scrubs dont make you any faster. Learning to go fast in corner then powerful brake and right line will make you faster. But just my opinion everybody dont take this so seriously.
+Valtteri onnela for me it's not so much about the speed, I want to learn how to do those things. I never race, just ride for fun. I am doing small steps forward as I go, scrub is on of them. This video is actually second or third time for me to try scrub. Thanks for your opinion.
Turd gear
You got me man, good job ;)
@@dirtniron I'm just joking buddy I have watched all your videos and iam a big fan all in good spirits!
