So, I guess you missed that HIM is actually Suirei in disguise, she killed everyone.
It took me a few rewatches to get it, but that man that you’re been suspicious of IS Suirei in crossdress. Notice that 4 people bring in her coffin, but 5 people walk out. That 5th person is Suirei dressed as a man. Suirei has been said to be very tall for a woman, so pretending to be a more androgynous-looking man (kind of like Jinshi but in reverse) wouldn’t be too hard for her.
About their age difference it is only 1 year, in some spoilers of notes of volume 15 of the light novel it is mentioned that currently Maomao is 21 and "Jinshi" 22 years old, time passes and it is mentioned in small moments throughout the series, in the novels it has been 5 years since season one of the anime.
Mao-Sherlock found her Moriarty...

Check out "Ascendance of a Bookworm". It's really great slow paced but very interesting anime. Very similar vibe to The Apothecary Diaries.
I gotta say, you guys confusing Basen & Lihaku is kind of funny.
I've watched this series multiple times and watched almost every reaction channel that covered it but it didn't occur to me until today that there are hints of Sherlock Holmes (Maomao) versus Moriarty/Lupin (Suirei) forming. I wonder if they'll go down that road in the second season or if they'll pursue a grander scheme with Loulan and whomever else at the head of it.
People argue if jinshi and others in the palace know that he is the emperor son but this episode make me feel like no one knows, like if we stop and think:
If the knew the babies were swich, they would punish ah-duo but they didnt and jinshi said "if that baby survived" meaning he does think the baby died long ago
Jinshi is the emperror favortie because he's "his brother", so he is next in line of his brother doesnt got a prince, jinshi doesnt want that so he pretend to be a eunuch to get a easy pass to see the concubines and help (the emperror cleary know what his brother is doing, but many people in the palace dont, I think only gaoshu, lakan, lady suirem and maybe basen know)
He said the emperror need a "new prince" wich can mean the old he is referring to is the dead baby, a new prince would mean that jinshi would be free, he wouldnt be next in line for the throne, except if someone reveals that jinshi is the emperror son, if that happens, than his work for yearz pretending being a eunuch would be worthless
Even if people know, nothing will change unless the emperor does something about it.
I think Jinshi knows, but doesn't expect he'll ever be acknowledged as the Emperor's son, which is what that under monologue was about.

Lol. Well, it happens, so far they guessed a lot of things right so I won't criticize them too much. I've seen far worse in other reactors.
So this is a TOTAL guess, but Jinshi supposedly being the secret son of the Emperor, he'd be next in line for the throne should his identity ever be revealed as he'd always be the eldest son. The entire point of the back gardens is to provide an heir for the emperor. If anyone knows Jinshi's identity, and Lakan apparently figured it out so maybe others could too, then they'd know that no matter which concubine gets to have a son with the Emperor, they're not going to get the throne. All the concubines come from really high up important families, so they all have the means and motive to make it so it's their family that gets to become part of the royal line. There's a reason poison is an issue among the concubines. Whichever concubine has a son will become Queen consort and that son heir, except Jinshi throws a wrench in that equation.
Well, with the important note that unlike in Europe it was not necessarily the eldest son that got the throne. So a child from another consort would still have plenty of chances of getting the throne if the father wanted it, or the nobility backed him.
So in my mind it's something else. It's the first step in a coup d'etat. What would be the point in assassinating the emperor if his heir would be ready to take his place immediately (and take revenge)??? So they take out Jinshi and then the emperor is completely alone and isolated... doesn't even matter that much if he has some new children because they would be too young to pose any threat for a decade. So the plot on Jinshi still makes sense even if they don't know about the baby switch which seems to be a very close guarded secret. Jinsh as the brother is still an heir.
Jinshi is a eunuch BUT secretly he is Emperor's brother WHEN actually he is Emperor's son
Logically speaking, there are 3 people that should know that Jinshi is Emperor's SON. Empress Dowager, Ah Duo, & the Emperor
There are also people who think that Jinshi is Emperor's BROTHER. Those are Jinshi himself & his close aides, Royal family (other than the first 3) and their aides, Lakan & Shishou
@@clowtears1898 Nope, Jinshi knows Ah Duo is her mother and ergo that the Emperor is his real father. That's why he says this episode the emperor needs a new prince, he knows he's his father, otherwise he wouldn't be a prince. Also, the scenes with him and Ah Duo kinda reveal that he knows, I mean come on. They drank together when Ah Duo was leaving the castle, clearly he knows she's his mom.
@@Bayard1503 The new consort gets quite a lot of focus, and she is supposedly the daughter of a very important noble family, so here's the thing - If she were to have a son with the Emperor, that son has a far could inherit the throne once the Emepror dies, but it's not guaranteed while Jinshi is still alive. If they really want to take over they have to get rid of Jinshi, get a rightful heir, then get rid of the Emperor. That's how you take a throne.

What scene with Ah Duo? Drinking? Ah Duo is his mother, that's why she'll do anything to be close with his son. Duh

@@kryshunter apothecary diaries takes place in the 1500s approximately. Romeo and Juliet was published in 1597. So basically it’s an alternate earth and time is a little ball of Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff anyway,

Its normal that people find difficult to understand but the man who was always seen killing everyone and helped suirei scape is actually her, she, ah-duo and jinshi have faces features that really can be both feminine and masculine depending in the make up used, suirei with hair up not showing and no make up looks like a man, just like ah-duo with masculine clothes and jinshi with make up. Suirei was the one who put the salt in the beer, told the guy about the seaweed that was poisonous, made the fire happend, the only case that was connected with her by accident was the special metal, Lakan discovered everything and wanted to test maomao, so he gave her a hint asking her to resolve that one problem, if she didnt had that hint, jinshi would be dead now

Other reactors als miss this detail even though the very sentence before that scene talks about Surei waking out disguised as a vendor.
Maomao has too many eyes on her now, so a return to the Rear Palace is to protect her as much as Gyokuyō.
Having said that, Gyokuyō is the one making babies, so both the Emperor and Jinshi are VERY invested in making sure that nothing happens to her. Gyokuyō is the best bet, at the moment, for an alternative male heir to Jinshi.
Which is a thing Jinshi wants very desperately. He really doesn't want to be the next emperor, although exactly why (and why the current emperor goes along with this) are as yet unclear.
i hope it doesnt count as a spoiler, but concubines are not only for "pleasure", they play a political role. if he pays attention to concubine, he makes better relationship with province she came from-Gyokuyou`s territories got a huge boost. the emperor doesnt touch Lishu because of her age, but she is still there because of politics. similar to laolan- emperor doesnt really like her, but if he didnt pay attention to her this could mean problems with her dad, who has a lot of power. she was put as a high concubine not because the emperor wanted, but because he was pushed to it

I LOVE Gaoshun's character. The fact that he's close enough to Jinshi to just tell him, like hey, I want to spend time with my grandkid. And Jinshi responds that he'll do his best. Also that his son Basen works closely with Jinshi and probably knows everything going on there as well. Just so intriguing
