I actually got an OBT sling recently and she's SUPER quirky lol; she built a multi chamber burrow with peep hole windows. You can see her peeping out of the peep holes through the side of the vial she lives in, and there are two working trap doors - totally living large with this multi-entrance thing she's got going on. She plans to major in burrow construction when she goes to college haha.
@@TomsBigSpiders Haha aww webbing is cute! It's funny how they just chuck their bug trash out of the burrow like, "OK peasant, clean up the rest of this meal" 🤣
You said on the pod that writing a comment on an old video you'll see quicker. Here's my sling questions. 1) I got 5 new slings and only 2 are burrowing, and only 1 is arboreal (P irminia). They have tarantula cribs 3 inch cubes. About 2 inch of substrate, some Sphagnum moss, a water bowl, a cork bark and two pre-made burrows. You said slings pretty much ALL burrow. The H pulchripes made a web behind the cork bark, the C darlingi sits on the acrylic sides all the time, like 85% and 15% on cork bark. Same set up I mentioned above, not too wet and not bone dry. I thought she'd burrow. The H longipes kinda hides but is mostly out. And the I mira sits out too. The only one that hides 99% of the time in the cork bark burrow is the P irminia. Are my slings broken? The ones that won't burrow? Or is my husbandry sus? I've done a ton of research and I think I'm doing it right. I'm using biodude substrate now, but did previously use that Lugarti substrate, it's in my first 3 T's enclosures. 2) My 2nd question is, I live in Reno, NV, we are in a high altitude desert. Around 4500-5k ft, and ALWAYS low humidity. I'm freaked out about the heater and I've thought about the thing you said, get a tub and add open water bowls and shut it so it stays humid enough, BUT I like to look at them and they are on a little stand right next to my couch. If you think the sling "incubator" (for lack of a better word) is the best and safest way to go, I'll do it. But if I can do anything to keep them out, including adding water daily, misting, etc, I'll do it. But I want them to live, so I'll do whatever you think is best for me. I do have 3 more, 2 juvie, 1 sling that are new worlds, T albo, C elegans, and the sling is Nhandu chromatus. I've had these ones about 2 months and they burrow just fine. Thanks. ***Also, I know I'm wordy, so feel free to go ahead and sum up my questions if you end up using them in the podcast. And you can use my name if you want, I just say Cali, so there's no confusion on how to pronounce it.
Hi, Callie! 1. How long have you had them for? Are the lower levels of substrate moist? Sometimes, it can take a while for them to get comfortable and to settle in. Many slings will burrow to get to more moist substrate, so I like to make starter burrows and squirt some water down into them so that it seeps into the bottom layers. This can entice some to start burrowing. If it's moist up top (with a water dish and sphagnum moss) and the sub is on the drier side, they will often stay up top. For your old world species, this will usually lead to webbing as they try to create more security by webbing up their home. So, I have a couple of those 3" cubes, and I've noticed that they dry out VERY quickly compared to some of my other sling enclosures. They obviously have excellent ventilation, with holes on the sides and top, and they don't hold a lot of substrate. This means that the moisture evaporates fast, especially when the heat is running and drying up the air. If you have naturally dry air and have to run heat in the winter, I would definitely encourage you to use one of the "incubators." You don't have to go crazy with it; I like to find a large clear plastic container, but some ventilation holes around the sides, and put an open container of water in the middle. I will then arrange my sling enclosures around this. That will keep the sling enclosures from drying out as quickly. I'm doing the big sling care episode this weekend, so I will definitely bring this up. Thanks!
@@TomsBigSpiders thanks for replying. I will do the tub with a water bowl. I've only had these slings for 10 days, so maybe they are still settling in and yes the lower levels are moist and I make sure the moss stays moist too. It's literally a daily task because of how dry it is here. All have eaten 2x except the H pulchripes, I think she's in premolt. Again, thx for the response. Hopefully they all make it out of this sensitive stage and live to adulthood. Your video was great today and I agree that Costa Rican Blue Front is a terrible common name. I told my husband I won't get anymore for a while, so I'm good with my 8, or I would try the one you showed today. If only there was a blue sequin pants 👖 emoji. Lol.
I agree with you the Ghost Ornamental is stunningly beautiful. I ordered one and she will be home soon, cant wait..The Pocies are the most amazing genus out there.
Hi Tom, H. pluchripes is one of the best Looking Ts with the powder blue legs and mine is very chill. Would have been my pick for number one. Pokies would be second place, unfortunately where I live it is now forbidden to keep them. Still looking for some balfouris to start a communal. My list would be: 5.Pterinochilus murinus Usambara 4.Birupes simoroxigorum 3.Chilobrachys sp. tropical blue/electric blue 2.Poecilotheria rufilata/metallica 1.Harpactira pulchripes *cheers
Hey Tom, i've been doing research on tarantulas for a long time but I just got my first T last month. Now i have 4 haha your channel has all the information I need and I want to thank you.
Man oh man, I want an H.Pulchripes somethin' fierce! I *LOVE* my M.Balfouri, I only have one currently but I'd love to get a few more for a communal. Their appearance amuses me, it looks like they're wearing fuzzy pajamas
Great list! My personal favourites would include my King baboon. Although it is a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes. My black colour form OBT is pretty cute as well.
Man, Tom, you put so much work into these vids it really just shows how much passion you feel for this hobby and its just awesome. Keep going! now onto the list: 1 P muticus: Love them t h i c c and redheaded LOL. No bit really, theyre awesome spiders all around and muy first old worldlers back when i startrd. 2 P rufilata. most amazing arboreal i own, both size and color wise. Trully breathtaking. 3 C fimbriatus: a must in any and every collectoon that cant be overlooked, that purple is just ugh. 4. C. sp. schmidti gold. Asian earth tigers are just something else. the brigjh yellow caparace is too awesome. 5 H gigas. P muticus brunette cousin, lol. Awesome in their own right and cant wait fior muy sling to grow to get her or him a pool to swim, lol.
Hello! Thanks so much! This was more of a "fun" video than informational, but it definitely got me thinking... hahaha That is a fantastic list, and I can't argue a single one. I had a terrible time putting mine together, as I love all of my Old Worlds. P. rufilata, H. gigas, and the P. muticus were all on the list at some point. I keep and love all three (my P. rufies are getting HUGE). I still need a C. fimbriatus...it's only a matter of time. Off to check out the C. sp. schmidti gold! Thanks so much for participating!
Got the cyriocosmus in a reaaaally good trade as a sling in a breeding deal. If you haven't got any SEA t's you're missing BIG time on them. I haven't had any trouble with this unsexed juvie but they say they just can't tolerate high temps, so I'm always careful with that. C. bach ma and hati hati are also a thing of beauty, but that gold is just something else. Get your hands on them!
I can see why you had a hard time placing these. every one is a cabidate for spot number one haha. there are two on the list that I'd add (seeing as I really only have a p. murinus as an old world) I'd add the Stromatopelma calceatum (Feather Leg Baboon Tarantula) and the Haplopelma lividum (Cobalt Blue). I honestly love the way the feather leg is shaped and because I have a strong love of the blue species like your love of the orange ones I love the Cobalt even though most say it's a pet hole. I don't have either unfortunately but I will eventually! thanks for the list Tom and the footage of each of your beautiful T's are PRIME!
It was almost impossible! And now I'm literally feeling bad about the ones that didn't make it to my list! hahah I still need to get an S. calceatum. They were one of the species I was looking at right around the same time I found the H. mac. At the time, I wasn't ready. No, I definitely am. And I love my H. lividum as well! That was one of the ones I felt bad about not including. hahaha Thanks!
Well, I'm angry that you didn't include… Kidding of course. Something like this is so subjective that it's impossible for everyone to have the same list. In sports when they make lists, writers often purposely make mistakes in the list to anger the most passionate fan bases so that it gets more comments/clicks. Not sure if the OBT fan base is quite that passionate.
Hahahaha. I've seen what can happen with these lists when folks' favorites aren't included. hahah And I know EXACTLY what you're saying about purposely putting in controversial pics. I've seen it happen in other interest areas (most recently, on a "Best Horror Movies" list I was perusing). There was a huge uproar over a couple choices, but MAN did that guy get some traffic. hahaha Apparently, the OBT crowd is much more subdued than their spiders. :)
Awesome video! mine would have to be some of the chilobrachys sp. beautiful fast growing T's, extremely difficult to film. I rehomed my H.Mac my girlfriend doesn't like being in the same room when the lid is off after seeing it run up the wall when I boxed him lol. I thought he was dead, he was in a death curl I'm trying to ease her back into it. he has one more rehoming when my selves are complete into a bio active tank. Going to try use bromelaids in a upright cork back tube. hopefully she will record it.
Thanks so much! Yeah, my guanxiensis almost made the list. I should NEVER have limited myself to only 5. haha I don't blame your girlfriend for that. hahaha Yeah, you definitely need to get her to record it. :)
Tom Moran ch. gaunxiensis is a beautiful T. hahaha I'm easing her back into it. Half a year ago I don't have T's thanks to and some other people on UA-cam my girlfriend warmed up to the idea of it. mostly me watching your videos than running to my girlfriend like "seee! Tom's doing it" lool she will hopefully get involved
The blue highlights on the guanxiensis are just amazing. And it's so sleek! That is amazing that your girlfriend warmed up to the idea. She's obviously one to hold onto. haha I get a LOT of people asking me how to convince their girlfriends or spouses to let them keep Ts. Many won't budge! Hahaha That's awesome!!!!
Tom Moran they are beautiful. haha we could probably go on for days talking about chilobrachys sp. I love the Vietnamese blue. hahahaa yeah I love her we just had our 2nd child 2 days ago, home birth! I just showed your videos, tarantulas Dan's, the spider man, tarantula addict, the dark den videos and she said okay to me getting a scorpion and mantis. I thought the scorpion looked a bit mean lool so swapped it for a Lasiodora Parahybana sling and that got me started now I have over ten tarantulas and one mean scorpion loool would definately say if anyone's trying to convince there partner to get allow them to keep T's would be to start of with a stick insect then get a mantis then sling. My girlfriend fell in love with our salmon pink. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have any. which would be a shame I've been interested and studying them since I was around 5 years old
Congratulations on your new addition! Wow, and a home birth, too? Very impressive! Hahaha I love that you had to swap the mantis for an LP...that's amazing. What kind of scorpion do you have? Great stuff...thanks so much!
who thumbs down this lol m.balfouri is getting added to my collection when tax season hits lol the most beautoful ow in my opinion is defff the h pulchripes ! another great video tom! ive spent countless hours on your youtube channel thanks for all the care videos and great videos in general lol
Hahahaha! I always wish that whoever thumbs down the videos would at least leave a comment about why. lol Thanks so much, Richard. The H. pulchripes is an amazing spider. Mine are just so laid back and gorgeous. I'm SO glad the prices are finally coming down on them so more folks can afford them. :) Thanks again!
i really should've spell checked all that but totally agree especially most of us being adults we can all agree to disagree without disliking something purely because there species wasnt on it.... again love the videos your the reason i got my first set of phormictopus cancerides little garbage disposal with absolutely bo fear lol
I had a Hmac, but unfortunately it just randomly died... Temps were good, humidity, food was always offered and it always ate. One day when i came home from work i saw it hiding around the corner with a slight death-curl going on. So i immediately threw it into an ICU and patiently waited making sure it would re-hydrate itself but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Absolutely no symptoms of DKS. I was pretty devastated. I find it ironic how some people wouldnt hesitate to kill bugs when we would try so hard to do the exact opposite. Nice collection, by the way.
Awww, man...that's terrible. Was it eating before it died? Was it really plump? And I hear you about the fact that most people would just assume kill these on site, and we're devastated when we lose one. Thanks!
nope. not at all... strange eh? i might pick several up this coming holiday season, by then theres usually a sale going on. instead of being discouraged , shit-happens its apart of the hobby unfortunately. so to fix that ill just get more
I just started buying old worlds this month and plan on buying more this week as a present to myself. My first was a Thai Tiger(thought it was a vonwirthi but after researching it wasn't, curse stupid common names!) Anyhow I'd love another updated or a bigger(top ten) list of your favorites. I want so many, I feel like it would help me decide lol. Even if you just do a podcast video I'd be happy.
Welcome to Old Worlds! :) And it's funny that you mention this, as I was just thinking about doing a list of my top 10 the other day. The problem is, I love them all! haha Maybe I'll start with the podcast first... Thanks!
Well, I did top 5 apparently (I honestly couldn't remember!). ua-cam.com/video/3myhfQ2MdX0/v-deo.html I will do a top 10, though. That'll be fun. :) Thanks, Elizabeth!
Great list. You got excellent footage of each one. For me 1 is Indian Ornamental. Close to my heart my first Poki. 2 would be the H.Mac. Fell in love with them after watching your videos and had to get one. 3 would be M. Balfouri 4 OBT Pterinochilus murinus just got one but love there color. 5 is my Harpactirella lightfooti
Thanks, bud! I LOVE my Indian Ornamental. Just so gorgeous. It actually came down to her and my vittata at the end. hahaha Ill have to get me an H. lightfooti (I love the name!).
So excited for my first! I'm picking up the socotra blue (monocentropus balfouri), 2 Antilles pink toes (caribena versicolor), and a pink salmon bird eater (lasiadora parahybana).
Hi, Amber! Yup, that list will be next (I'm working on it right now). I think I may have started something here. hahaha Thanks so much! You have to love the pulchripes and the balfouri. Amazing species.
Im sure youll love it tom... Im planning to get 1 sir tom.. It only cost 20 dollar or 1000 pesos here in philippines per slings.. But there are only few seller of local ts here... Maybe i can get you one for free next month or so.. The problem is the shipping...
Absolutely great video. Top 5 got them all. the runner up was new to me, gorgeous though. Vittata is like i told you before i think, my favourite pokie, not the Most beautiful but it has a wonderful personality. My top 5 this week at least. 5. O. violaceopes 4. M. balfouri 3. H. pulchripes 2. P. subfusca highland 1. P. vittata Runner up. O. philippinus. I don't know about some of them if you ask me tomorrow. This time i didn't get the H-mac on the list & i love the sp. but i had to get the violaceopes on the list, i've got a pretty calm probably female because it molted 5 days ago & turned more blue on the legs & more prominent stripes on the abdomen. Take good care of yourself Tom 'til next time. More videos like this? Definitely! 🤗🕷🕸🇸🇪
Thanks so much, Glenn! Yup, I agree on the vittatas. Such a wonderful species. I love your list as well! Heck, I could do this on four different days and come up with four different lists. Hahha And I'll definitely be doing more like this. :)
Awesome video Tom. 👍 👍 Never fail to impress. I to have the H maculata that shares the same behavior traits that you have found.. more flea than fight.. people have a problem deciphering a defensive behavior from aggressive behavior.. i am a HUGH fan of the baboon species so i have quite a few old world Ts ..love your list..really close to my own choosing.. you said it before in other videos..there is just something about a blue tarantula.. it is mesmerizing.. 👍 great vid 👍
Thanks so much, Rick. Looks like these lists might become a reoccurring feature. haha I agree completely that folks don't understand the difference between "defensive" and "aggressive." If someone comes into my home and I attack them, I am DEFENDING myself (much like when you open a tarantulas enclosure). If I walk down the street and start shoving people looking for a fight, that's aggressive. I don't keep a single tarantula that's out looking to bolt from its cage to attack me for no reason. There's a big difference. When folks have Ts that are super defensive, it often means that they don't feel secure enough in their surroundings. Sometimes, that's due to how they are set up. Hmmmm...maybe a list of blue tarantulas? :) Thanks again!
Hello Tom can I ask you some questions about the king baboon Tarantula for 10 gallon tank how much substrate would you put in there I female is due a juvenile a lot of people say 4 in of substrate Coco fiber or 6in of Coco fiber what's the correct amount for 10 gallon enclosure so she can dig in substrate this is my first time owning older world Tarantula
If she is a juvenile, I would consider putting her in something a bit smaller for the time being. What size is she? I've had them create deep burrows and then not come up to eat. This seems to be an issue more with slings and juveniles. They will basically starve to death as, in the wild, they would find prey underground. Have you seen my video on this by any chance? ua-cam.com/video/4RRnOx9xK2Q/v-deo.html
This was awesome. Love the Aussie stuff. It’s kinda funny. Get a whistling tarantula. Whistles… dogs come running… no more dogs. Opportunistic whistling. Anyway. Just went on a weird think-a-thon
how many Ts do you have roughly bro I'm curious lol an Im one of your Aussie viewers I love the obts if I could have 1 over seas type I'd own that there similar to what we already get but fancy orange an black love your channel as well mate your a wealth of information
Right now? About 150 and 375 slings (I just had a sac). That about my limit for the time being. :) Man, I feel terrible that you guys can't keep these other species. I mean, I get it, but it sucks. Thanks so much!!!
I just realized I'm from the Philippines yet I have not owned a philippinus. Haven't seen much sellers around here. So when I see one the price really is pretty high considering I'm a student but I will definitely will owned. Again nice vid sir.
How much do they go for there? I speak to a lot of folks from the Philippines, and many don't even know this tarantula is available. It's one of my favorites; I have two females. Thanks, Efer!
Tom Moran I saw 1 lately and it cost 1,000 pesos. It measures around 2.5 to 2.8 inches i guess a juvenile. and 1,200 pesos is the cost of m.balfouri. So if ever i can save that amount of money I'll be confuse which one to buy. Lol!
Wow, they're almost as much as the balfouri! Here, balfouris go for about three times what you can find the philippinus for. That's a tough decision you'll have to make... haha
I'll get a balfouri maybe. Ever since I saw your communal setup video along with dark den's It already became my goal. Haha. But Philippinus is also gorgeous. Haha
Hi Tom, I wish I could mash that LIKE comment a hundred times, you H. pulchripes in general are stunning, the hues of gold are awesome, the H. mac for being motley brown and white is a stunner, such intricate patterns, M. balfouri are beautiful as is Socotra Island, amazing Island, Poecilotheria sp. are all regal as you say, my favourite is P. subfusca highland. I've yet to own any of these, I do have P. metallica, regalis, I thought you would have had an Orthinoctinae sp. up there. I think that's how it's spelt, (Earth Tigers), my favourite is my O. schioedtei. Love all your T's they're well cared for of course, wouldn't expect anything else from you. I'm looking for an H. maculatta very soon, love their overall appearance and feeding response, in fact I would like hundreds of sp. I don't have but hey you can't have them all, unless you've got a spare few rooms. Wishing you well and greetings from Scotland.
Hello, Micheal! Man, thanks so much! I was really worried about how this video would be received, as some folks seem to get upset when their favorite species don't make these kind of lists. This is just my current top 5, and I say "current" because it could be different in a week. I love all of my Old World species, and it was challenging coming up with only 5. Heck, Pokies are my favorite, and it would be difficult for those species not to make up my top 10. haha. Sadly, I don't have any Orthinoctinae yet. I'm kind of embarrassed about that. I'll definitely have to get a couple for the collection. :) Thanks again!
It's always my pleasure Tom, Orthinoctinae sp. are phenomenal, colours, eating response, so yes you really should get a couple, that's if you've any space left...haha, as you said your top 5 can change from week to week as do mines, there are so many awesome looking T's out there it's hard to pick a top 10 never mind a top 5, especially OW's.
Sounds like they'll be right up my alley! I have to make some space soon and sell some spiders I have multiples of (I'm just do darned attached to them all), and then I'll be time to get some more species! Haha It's so true...there are just so many species! :)
My top 5 are all chilobrachys ahaha. I can't resist those turd brown spiders xD Their webbed lairs are just too cool! Though I would love to get a H. pulchripes and m. balfouri at some point, if I ever see them going for cheap.
My C. guangxiensis is on the preliminary list right in front of me. Hahaha I had such a tough time with this, as I love all of my Old Worlds. I might have to do a part 2 and feature all the ones that just barely missed the list (like every other one of my Old Worlds haha). Yeah, hopefully the prices on pulchripes and balfouri continue to go down (although balfourie has been stuck for a while). Thanks!
Thank you very much! I do not...not YET anyway! I'm getting a bunch of new species I have to check out in the comments for this video. haha. I'd better make some room!
Do you know who first captive bred the phlogius sp over in the States? Love being and Aussie and only having old worlds. I own 4 different sp of phlogius. Love them
I'd have to research it. I know that it was mentioned a couple times in Arachnoboards, but I can't find the link at the moment. I would LOVE to get more of them myself. Thanks!
@@TomsBigSpiders some great species here in Oz. Check out James Bindoff reptiles and Invertebrates on insta. He has some of the nicest Australian Ts in the hobby. Thanks for your reply mate. Keep up the great content
Hmmm have to sub found myself enjoying your videos I've been watching dark den as his videos are real good quality not to long as to get boring but very informative I'm just expanding my collection so this has helped a great deal
Amazing species here, some I haven’t even heard of, which is really cool, unfortunately I don’t have much to really say about my favorite kept species, as I still have yet to get my first one :(
Hi, Joseph! They sure can! If you have a moment, check out the videos in this playlist. I've been documenting my communal for the past year. ua-cam.com/play/PLpNbT4ORuIHUGO7c2rXPdFdPN1qjt_72k.html
In mine? Not yet. They're still young adults. I will likely drop in a male or two that are not related to my females when the time comes and let them breed.
though ive never had one, i like OBTs because of the orange that they have, their also really angry all time which is why i guess its either Orange Baboon Tarantula or Orange Bitey Thing xD the fact that theyre always trying to kill everything means that you have to keep your wits about you, which is why i like them. but the p vittata i think you called it looks interesting, may have to try and get one of those :p
My original list started with seven, including the OBT. I had a REALLY difficult time narrowing it down to five, and if I'm being honestly, I'm still not comfortable with the order. I love my OBT (I just did a video on them) and I feel bad for not having one on the list. hahaha. Poecilotheria is my favorite genus, so for first place, it came to choosing one species out of the 11 I currently keep. Thanks for commenting!
i watched the video, and the last jokey question was great xD id love one of those but im definatly not comfortable with one, my stepdad has gotten a C. Vonworthi which is a pain in the ass, it attack when splashed with water xD you should get one if you dont already, thing is i can barely deal with that so a OBT is no chance, i wouldnt mind a P. Matallica but i jist dont have space, time or the money :/ and the commenting is fine :p
C. vonwirthi. oh gods. lmao. The ONLY tarantula that has given me a start. They are just evil in their temperament, and once situated, never seen again. heh heh. I only know mine is alive because the food always disappears. :-D
we gave ours plenty of substrate, it borrowed under the water dish as its about 5 inches or more, and then filled it back in... so with hoe high the substrate is and how evil he is, its a pain feeding and watering him xD he strikes everything, ivw lost count how many times he has just missed my hand when the locust bouces towards me and out the tank xD locust knows what going on xD
Orange bitey thing ? that's pretty much how I would call all of these orange T's...What am I doing here ? I cant even catch a house spider....i'd rather move...
Well since you said you were checking out comments for species, take a look at Chilobrachys sp. "electric blue". Not sure if you can even get them over in the US yet but those have been showing up here recently and I *really* want one. But they're still so expensive :(
Oh, we can get them, and they are right at the top of my wishlist! Like you said, they are just VERY expensive still. I've noticed the prices dropping, though, so it's only a matter of time... :)
Hey, bud! You know, mine just molted, and it's an awesome tarantula. I LOVE their trapdoor hunting style. I should have made this list top 10 or 15, as I really do love all of my Old Worlds. haha.
Hey Tom I know this is quite and old video do yours but I was curious if you could help me out with a question I had about M. Balfouri communals. I have 4 M. Balfouris that are slings right now but I did not start them communally. Would it be ok to put them together still even though they’ve been by themselves for a while?
Hello! Someone just did this with their slings, and there was no issue. If you try it, you should put them all into a new, neutral enclosure and keep an eye on them as you add them.
I like your list, and it wasn't much of a drumroll for #1. lol. My fav is the P. ornata, but all of mine (5 different species) are cool. Like others here in the comments though, the OBT would have hit the casa du casey top 5. I have 4 which are anything but scary, and having 4 side by side is beyond interesting due to the varying behavior and architecture, not to mention that color. Another of mine is the Orphnaecus sp. blue (Panay blue). On my FB photo album page I have several shots of this one, and for "blue", these are right up there with any of the "blue" colored T's I've seen. Reclusive as the H. mac though. heh. Another old worlder that I really love is the Ceratogyrus darlingi. This never seems to get the "love" because it is common and inexpensive in the hobby. Coloration, spot patterns on the abdomen and while fossorial, they tend to "wall burrow" their enclosures making them easy to observe even down in the dirt, and that they come out quite a bit makes them a definite favorite. The trouble with any list is the sheer number of old world species in the hobby. So I understand your "arbitrary' comments. That would be my feeling regarding these animals as well. :-)
Hahahaha. There was NO drumroll...I almost stamped it out with my talking! I'm still getting the hang of this new editing program, and I'm finding it challenging to time how long to make the sections to accommodate my talking. Yeah, the OBT was the last one I dropped, and I regretted it as soon as I posted. I should have made it top 10 so I could have included more. My darned Panay blues aren't showing their blues yet. I can't wait. Love those little guys. I NEED to get another darlingi. Mine both ended up male. Yeah, this is totally arbitrary in some ways. I love Old World's, and it was too difficult to narrow it down. It was fun, though! Thanks, bud!
Tom, I'm very happy for you having these beautiful Ts but as for me...Old World...I don't think so...if it got loose I would move out of my house and put it up for sale. Lol. That being said, I have my first two Ts. Chaco and H Curly Hair. Have a Pumpkin Patch and a Surprise one being picked for me by Kelly at Swift's Invertebrates and I'm ordering my N Curly hair tonight. I'm terrified of a GBB and Cobalt Blue and some others. Yep, I'd sell my house!!!
Hi, Tina! Hey, you may change your mind sometime down the road. :) I personally don't find them to be as bad as folks make them out to be. :) And that's awesome! And the GBB is a New World species, so you don't have to be as afraid of that one. :)
It would be impossible for me to make a list. Like you, my list changes from day to day. it depends on what is happening with each specimen at the time.
Yeah, this was more just for fun. It sounded like a great idea until I actually had to sit down and do it. I'm ashamed to admit to how much time I spent rejiggering my list. hahaha
At 11 mins you mentioned Australian T enthusiasts could only buy local species, however this is not accurate. All the usual Gootys, OBTs, Singapore blue etc can be bought online still. The Golden blue-legged baboons are fine looking specimens indeed.
Really? I've had several Australian tarantula keepers tell me that they were only legally allowed to keep local species. Are there certain parts of the country where this is not the case? I just posted a video about Phlogius crassipes, and a couple Australian keepers confirmed this (and one said he could only keep local species). I'm very confused.
Typically yes, you're right. All OS tarantula species are classed as s.14 unlisted hence automatically prohibited, in WA at least. You have to submit the species name for assessment to obtain a special permit under the Biosecurity Management Act, and these are more readily obtained for research purposes.
mine was the runner up :) so you can get them there? I would love to have a Cyriopagopus lividum or a maculata but for now I just want to collect all the genus' for phlogius.
My Top 1 is the stromatopelma calceatum, since one of the most important factors for me when selecting a T to buy is fluffiness. She's quick as devil when it comes to hunting, but hasn't shown any aggression towards me yet. She's had an easy time climbing to the 1 though since she's my only old world :D
Great question! I can honestly say no. I've had species that didn't completely wow me, but I didn't dislike them. It's a good thing, too, because they live a long time. haha
My first tarantula was a Cobalt blue. Before I even new there was a distinction between tarantulas, I used to have scorpions, saw a blue tarantula at petco thought wow why not tarantulas are so calm, moments later while the guys try to get it into the carrier in a fraction of a second it’s from its log onto the guys upper arm, later after I took it home, it was under a log, I mist the terrarium, and in a fraction of a second it’s outside of the cage on my table, to say the least I was in absolute disbelief and found out what old world meant a couple hours later online 😂😂 I now have an obt and blue foot baboon both slings, many years later
What an awesome story! I think a lot of folks end up getting old worlds before they are aware of what that means. I almost did years ago when I first got into the hobby. It can be quite the shock!
I think it's this one here: www.amazon.com/Sterilite-18768606-ShowOffs-Storage-Container/dp/B016G137BA/ref=pd_cp_469_2?pd_rd_w=16KCB&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=6YTJS1TX3ZEE4EC75D9R&pd_rd_r=3b207ab1-a7c9-11e9-a94e-716468749152&pd_rd_wg=VO0yF&pd_rd_i=B016G137BA&psc=1&refRID=6YTJS1TX3ZEE4EC75D9R I used to find them at Walmart and Dollar General for about $7 or so. I would NOT pay this much for one.
Omothymus violaceopes is one of the prettiest spiders I keep and was on the list at one point. I had a VERY difficult time narrowing it down to 5. Hahaha. Unfortunately, I keep any Phormingochilus at the moment. I'll have to fix that. haha
I'm literally working on a video on the difference as I write this! :) This article I wrote should explain it. tomsbigspiders.com/2016/02/09/tarantulas-faq/ Just scroll down a bit to the chart! Let me know if you have any other questions. :)
Yes lol, they really are terrifying when in numbers, no matter what the species. And I can't imagine opening the enclosure to do whatever, having to beware of so many!
Oh, they are totally laid back! hahaha. If anything, they scramble to their dens. If you get a minute, check out their interactions in this video. :) ua-cam.com/video/kzX5Yv9b6nY/v-deo.html
Please Tom. Don't say that a spider is nasty. There are no spiders that are nasty, mean, evil or bad. It's just we humans, that is this. You only give the spider haters more to hate. Best wishes from Bo.
Which one did I say that for, Bo? I spend the majority of my videos trying to dispel that they are nasty or, a term I loathe, "aggressive". I have some of the calmest spiders around, and I attribute it to the fact that I don't give them reason to stress out. I will have to rewatch this video to see where and how I used it.
If you're having such a hard time picking the top 5 why not make a top 10 instead ;D There certainly are enough amazing old world species. Also my top 5 list would almost be the same, except I'd have to slip in a Chilobrachys somewhere. And if you want a pokie with even more amazing purple metallic colors get a P. formosa! People have actually mistaken my P. formosa girl for a metallica when the light hits her just right lol
I might have to revisit this, as I could EASILY name of 10-15. hahaha Chilobrachys guangxiensis was one of the ones on my short list. UGH. I love my female as well. I have the formosa as well! hahahah Brilliant purples when you get a light on her! Thanks again!
Hi, Bo! I've said many times in videos and articles that I never find them to be aggressive, and that they only act defensive when scared. Sorry if I apparently misspoke here.
Tom Moran Yup I got hammered, no breathing difficulties but I experienced pain and loss of muscle control in my feet and legs, despite being bitten in my hand. I also had recurring symptoms for a year.
My niece told me to be sure to l a vel my T's because if anything happened to me unlabeled trantulas are euthanasied, never heard that before is that true? I know it helps to know one from the other but this other information I never heard.
That's a great question, Esther. I don't know if they would necessarily be euthanized as long as a relative knew what they were. If there is no relative to claim them, and they are not labelled, I could see animal control destroying them because they don't know what they are and would think that they could be potentially dangerous. I DO think that it's prudent to label them and leave notes about them, just in case.
Hello, Lynn! Awwww...she sounds adorable. Mine done a ton of webbing as a sling, but nothing like that! haha
@@TomsBigSpiders Haha aww webbing is cute! It's funny how they just chuck their bug trash out of the burrow like, "OK peasant, clean up the rest of this meal" 🤣
All new comers to the hobby should definitely be sent straight to this channel!!
Hey, Joe...thank you so much!
I'm thinking about getting a king baboon for my first tarantula
Oh, and of course the gorgeous colors! 🌈👍
Hi, Lisa! I'm actually working on an update to this one!
Lol.
4 outta 5 in my old world book. Nicely done. Without the honorable mention.
Sweet! Usually people are yelling at me for not including their favorites. haha
I love the H. pulchripes! I could probably have an entire collection of just those!
They are beautiful spiders!
Amazing patterns! 💜🕷💜🕷
They really are!
I agree with you the Ghost Ornamental is stunningly beautiful. I ordered one and she will be home soon, cant wait..The Pocies are the most amazing genus out there.
Congrats on getting one, Tam!
Hi Tom, H. pluchripes is one of the best Looking Ts with the powder blue legs and mine is very chill.
Thanks for chiming in with your list, Christoph! I certainly can't argue with any of your choices! :)
My H. Pulchripes, just chills out like a Rosie too. I love watching it decorate the enclosure. Mines a sling.
Yes! Mine is really docile and laid back as well. Such a sweetheart. :)
Hey Tom, i've been doing research on tarantulas for a long time but I just got my first T last month. Now i have 4 haha your channel has all the information I need and I want to thank you.
Congratulation, Ranger Hanzo...that's awesome! And thanks so much!
Fantastic vid! Love the m.balfouri I'm still trying to convince my husband to let me get a colony haha!! I'm glad to see yours are doing really well
Man, he HAS to let you get them. It's amazing, seriously! Thanks so much!
Man oh man, I want an H.Pulchripes somethin' fierce! I *LOVE* my M.Balfouri, I only have one currently but I'd love to get a few more for a communal. Their appearance amuses me, it looks like they're wearing fuzzy pajamas
Both are AMAZING species both in appearance and temperament. They really do! haha Thanks!
Now you have to do your favorite NW species!
You know, as soon as I posted this, that was my first thought. hahaha
Tom Moran i agree completely
Yeah, just started compiling my list. Oh dear...here we go again. haha
Great list! My personal favourites would include my King baboon. Although it is a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes. My black colour form OBT is pretty cute as well.
I really should have made this list longer. Hahaha. I love my muticus as well. I REALLY want the black OBT. haha
@@TomsBigSpiders did you managed to get a black form obt ?
That phillipines blue baboon tarantula is awesome. Would that be a bad first tarantula?
Man, Tom, you put so much work into these vids it really just shows how much passion you feel for this hobby and its just awesome. Keep going!
now onto the list:
1 P muticus: Love them t h i c c and redheaded LOL.
This was more of a "fun" video than informational, but it definitely got me thinking... hahaha
That is a fantastic list, and I can't argue a single one.
I will definitely pick a couple up...I'm sold. hahahaha. Thanks!
I have a Poecilorheria vittita and I love it. Got it as a sling and want more of the pokies in my collection
That was my first pokie! LOVE the genus Poecilotheria. :)
Good list. Tarantulas on my list include some of the colorforms of P murinus,S calceatum and Heterothele villosella. They can be kept comunal as well
The H. villosella was actually the species I was eyeing for a communal when I got the M. balfouri! :)
Yes, i have kept them communally. It was no problems at all
I can see why you had a hard time placing these. every one is a cabidate for spot number one haha. there are two on the list that I'd add (seeing as I really only have a p. murinus as an old world) I'd add the Stromatopelma calceatum (Feather Leg Baboon Tarantula) and the Haplopelma lividum (Cobalt Blue).
The balfori is a stunner tom👍🏽👏🏼
Hi, Lee!!! Thanks so much, bud!
I love lists and this is a good one!
Thanks so much, Matt! I was afraid people would hunt me down if their favorites didn't make it. haha
Well, I'm angry that you didn't include…
Kidding of course.
Hahahaha! I always wish that whoever thumbs down the videos would at least leave a comment about why. lol
Thanks so much, Richard. The H. pulchripes is an amazing spider. Mine are just so laid back and gorgeous. I'm SO glad the prices are finally coming down on them so more folks can afford them. :)
Thanks again!
i really should've spell checked all that but totally agree especially most of us being adults we can all agree to disagree without disliking something purely because there species wasnt on it.... again love the videos your the reason i got my first set of phormictopus cancerides little garbage disposal with absolutely bo fear lol
no* dohhh
I had a Hmac, but unfortunately it just randomly died... Temps were good, humidity, food was always offered and it always ate.
One day when i came home from work i saw it hiding around the corner with a slight death-curl going on. So i immediately threw it into an ICU and patiently waited making sure it would re-hydrate itself but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Absolutely no symptoms of DKS. I was pretty devastated. I find it ironic how some people wouldnt hesitate to kill bugs when we would try so hard to do the exact opposite. Nice collection, by the way.
Stuck molt was also ruled out since it molted 2-3months prior.... very gorgeous T
Awww, man...that's terrible. Was it eating before it died? Was it really plump?
And I hear you about the fact that most people would just assume kill these on site, and we're devastated when we lose one. Thanks!
Had it been acting peculiarly in any way?
nope. not at all... strange eh? i might pick several up this coming holiday season, by then theres usually a sale going on. instead of being discouraged , shit-happens its apart of the hobby unfortunately. so to fix that ill just get more
Great list!!
Thanks, Jodi! I had a really difficult time with it; I love all of my OW Ts. Hahaha
Tom Moran any future husbandry videos in the works? I absolutely love your husbandry videos.
Oh, gosh yes! hahaha I've got a couple planned on some species I haven't covered before, and I'm also going to revisit some of my older ones!
I just started buying old worlds this month and plan on buying more this week as a present to myself. My first was a Thai Tiger(thought it was a vonwirthi but after researching it wasn't, curse stupid common names!)
Anyhow I'd love another updated or a bigger(top ten) list of your favorites.
Thanks!
@@TomsBigSpiders Just went to your website and noticed you did it! Already 3 a.m, looks like I'm not sleeping tonight. 😅 So excited to listen.
My fave is the Cape T from S. Africa. One of few green shaded Ts I think. You can buy them online. Aussies can get them too.
HI, Matt! Green shaded tarantulas are absolutely stunning. I wish there were more of them. :)
Tom, if you haven't already, I'd love to see your top 10 OW species! You have good taste, interested in others you like. :)
Well, I did top 5 apparently (I honestly couldn't remember!). ua-cam.com/video/3myhfQ2MdX0/v-deo.html
I will do a top 10, though. That'll be fun. :) Thanks, Elizabeth!
Thanks for making this video. My very first tarantula is an old world and I think they suit me more rather than them new world fluffies.
You're very welcome.
Great picks! I love all of the webbing in the communal enclosure :~)
Thanks so much! Yeah, they really went to town on that one. I'm waiting for them to start webbing up their new enclosure! :)
So excited for my first! I'm picking up the socotra blue (monocentropus balfouri), 2 Antilles pink toes (caribena versicolor), and a pink salmon bird eater (lasiadora parahybana).
Congrats! Those are some awesome species there! :)
I really enjoyed this video some really nice shots and footage of some stunning Ts good job mate 👍 favourite new world species would be cool 😎
Thanks so much, bud! Yeah, I'm already starting my list for New Worlds. That's going to be even more difficult to narrow down. haha
I agree with past commentors, do your favorite NW! I love seeing other T keepers' favorites. I completely agree with your 2 and 3!
Hi, Amber! Yup, that list will be next (I'm working on it right now). I think I may have started something here. hahaha
Thanks so much! You have to love the pulchripes and the balfouri. Amazing species.
Sir tom moram.. Have you seen the sp.palawan blue from the philippines you will surely love the species.... I hope you check it out..
Oh WOW. What a beautiful tarantula! I have sp. Panay blue (love those), but not the palawan. I'll definitely keep a lookout!
Im sure youll love it tom... Im planning to get 1 sir tom.. It only cost 20 dollar or 1000 pesos here in philippines per slings.. But there are only few seller of local ts here... Maybe i can get you one for free next month or so.. The problem is the shipping...
The H. pulchripes are stunning indeed!
They truly are. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders Yes we need a list of blue Tarantulas please
Have you seen my video on this by any chance? ua-cam.com/video/4RRnOx9xK2Q/v-deo.html
awesome list tom!😊
Thanks, bud! :)
You are Awesome.
Thank you, Tina! :)
This was awesome. Love the Aussie stuff. It’s kinda funny. Get a whistling tarantula. Whistles… dogs come running… no more dogs. Opportunistic whistling. Anyway. Just went on a weird think-a-thon
Hahahahaha That's hysterical! Thank you!

I have a 1 on sling ive has ever since a more than half the size.thwy grow so well and male great webbing
how many Ts do you have roughly bro I'm curious lol an Im one of your Aussie viewers I love the obts if I could have 1 over seas type I'd own that there similar to what we already get but fancy orange an black love your channel as well mate your a wealth of information
Right now? About 150 and 375 slings (I just had a sac). That about my limit for the time being. :)
Man, I feel terrible that you guys can't keep these other species.
Haha
You can't go wrong with either of them! haha
Hi Tom, I wish I could mash that LIKE comment a hundred times, you H. pulchripes in general are stunning, the hues of gold are awesome, the H. mac for being motley brown and white is a stunner, such intricate patterns, M. balfouri are beautiful as is Socotra Island, amazing Island, Poecilotheria sp. are all regal as you say, my favourite is
P. subfusca highland. I've yet to own any of these, I do have P. metallica, regalis, I thought you would have had an Orthinoctinae sp. up there. I think that's how it's spelt,
(Earth Tigers), my favourite is my O.
Yep there are soooo many, next you'll have to do your top ten NW's.
Thanks!
All very beautiful species:) Do u own a Heterothele gabonensis?
Thank you very much! I do not...not YET anyway! I'm getting a bunch of new species I have to check out in the comments for this video. haha. I'd better make some room!
Tom Moran haha ya I guess so! You can never have too many ts:D
Hahaha. VERY true! :)
Thanks for the suggestion...I'll definitely check him out! :)
@@MatthewAldridge28 unfortunately won't be able to get them stateside which sucks
Hmmm have to sub found myself enjoying your videos I've been watching dark den as his videos are real good quality not to long as to get boring but very informative I'm just expanding my collection so this has helped a great deal
Hey, Luke...thanks so much! Dark Den is awesome.
My h pulchrapies is also docile, and so so beautiful😀
I love that species, Natalie!
@@TomsBigSpiders me too 😄
Congrats on being able to make a top 5. I don't think I could. Maybe top 5 Baboons, and top 5 Pokies, LOL
It was NOT fun, and now I'm reading the comments and feeling guilty for not including some on the list. hahaa
H.mac, cobalt blue, p.metalica, h.vilosella, m.balfouri. There is my top five.
All gorgeous species!
@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks Tom
Cobalts are crazy 👌
Cobalts are crazy 👌
All of them are beautifull....
Thank you, Nikko!
boss can u do more caresheet vids .. ones that tackle more an individual ts
I sure can! I'm working on a few now. :)
Amazing species here, some I haven’t even heard of, which is really cool, unfortunately I don’t have much to really say about my favorite kept species, as I still have yet to get my first one :(
Hello, Marissa! Thank you so much. Hopefully, you take the plunge soon. :)
tom you can really keep those Socotra islands together like that ?
Hi, Joseph! They sure can! If you have a moment, check out the videos in this playlist. I've been documenting my communal for the past year. ua-cam.com/play/PLpNbT4ORuIHUGO7c2rXPdFdPN1qjt_72k.html
Any ever breed doing this?
In mine?
Fangfarm.com just saw them on there
I think my Idiothele mira would be at the top of my list. Very unique and overlooked species.
Hey, bud! You know, mine just molted, and it's an awesome tarantula. I LOVE their trapdoor hunting style. I should have made this list top 10 or 15, as I really do love all of my Old Worlds. haha.
My top five. 5) balfouri 4) Obt 3) H Mac 2) poecilitheria miranda 1) fort hall baboon
Great list! I can't argue with that!
Ok sounds great. Thank you for the reply Tom and have a great day!
@@kalisz4607 If you do try to combine them, please let me know how it turns out? :)
I definitely will!
Tom do you have ANY M Balforie for sale. Please let me know . I really think they are Beautiful.
Hi, Conchita! Unfortunately, I do not.
I've also corresponded with several Australian keepers over the years who told me the same thing.
Typically yes, you're right. All OS tarantula species are classed as s.14 unlisted hence automatically prohibited, in WA at least. You have to submit the species name for assessment to obtain a special permit under the Biosecurity Management Act, and these are more readily obtained for research purposes.
Tom, are there any old world tarantulas that don't have strong venom?
Not that I'm aware of unfortunately.
WHAT???!!! Tom! Your Red Slates?! Just kidding... Gotta admire ALL pokies for what they are and who they are. They are incredible!
I know, right? This video is already outdated. hahahaha Thanks, bud!
Where do you get the socotra?? I want to start a community
mine was the runner up :) so you can get them there? I would love to have a Cyriopagopus lividum or a maculata but for now I just want to collect all the genus' for phlogius.
Yay! I had a tough time with this list. I absolutely LOVE Pholgius species. Definitely one I want to collect. :) Thanks!
I STILL need to get one! I, too, love fluffy Ts. haha.
tom any species you don't care for? old or new world
Great question!
Tom Moran haha definitely in my case at least! Must admit though, old worlds are so much more beautiful imo. :P
What type of container is #1 in?
I think it's this one here: www.amazon.com/Sterilite-18768606-ShowOffs-Storage-Container/dp/B016G137BA/ref=pd_cp_469_2?pd_rd_w=16KCB&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=6YTJS1TX3ZEE4EC75D9R&pd_rd_r=3b207ab1-a7c9-11e9-a94e-716468749152&pd_rd_wg=VO0yF&pd_rd_i=B016G137BA&psc=1&refRID=6YTJS1TX3ZEE4EC75D9R I used to find them at Walmart and Dollar General for about $7 or so. I would NOT pay this much for one.
beautifull creatures
Thank you, Kerry! :)
Where can you get the phlogius crassipes?
Fear Not has them (if you are in the States). fearnottarantulas.com/product/phlogius-crassipes-australian-barking-spider-34-1/
Great video :)
Thank you!
what do think about Omothymus and Phormingochilus?
Omothymus violaceopes is one of the prettiest spiders I keep and was on the list at one point. I had a VERY difficult time narrowing it down to 5. Hahaha. Unfortunately, I keep any Phormingochilus at the moment. I'll have to fix that. haha
P. carpenteri is such a beauty and they are very intresting to keep because their great character. my advise: try them out :)
Here’s my list 5. Fort hall baboon 4. Festherleg baboon 3. I forgot the name but it’s a black tarantula 2. Orange baboon 1. King baboon
Great list, Tony! :)
I am a newbie here so forgive the question, why old world and new world and what are the differences please? Thanks.
I'm literally working on a video on the difference as I write this! :)
This article I wrote should explain it. tomsbigspiders.com/2016/02/09/tarantulas-faq/
Just scroll down a bit to the chart! Let me know if you have any other questions. :)
Tom Moran thanks for the reply and Info, I look forward to the vid 👍👍👍👍
WITH EVERY S MY FLASHBACKS ARE TRIGGERED
What about H. himalayna? It`s great spider but not that popular as M. balfouri...
H. himalayna is a gorgeous spider, but it's just not a readily available. I would love to have one. :)
I Like The Big Deep orange ones
Indeed!
Wow I couldn't keep loads of them together like that! Very scary!
HI, Autumn! Which ones? My M. balfouri communal?
Yeah as much as i like spider's number two just looks creepy. I dunno maybe its all the webs and spider's creeps me out spooky stuff 👻👻😄😄
O. philippinus is my favorite. I only have 2 ow now. P. muticus is the other, but she is a boring sling.
LOVE that species! I have a thing for orangey spiders. :)
My favorite old world is the p metallica
They are a stunning species. :)
If you're having such a hard time picking the top 5 why not make a top 10 instead ;D
There certainly are enough amazing old world species.
It's only we humans, that make the spiders, try to defend them selves. I have never stressed my spiders, and therefore they are calm.
Hi, Bo! I've said many times in videos and articles that I never find them to be aggressive, and that they only act defensive when scared. Sorry if I apparently misspoke here.
Yup got tagged by P regalis. Can confirm that their bites are nothing to scoff at.
Yikes! That is one species I hope to NEVER get bitten by. No way. How long did the symptoms last? Some folks get hammered.
I DO think that it's prudent to label them and leave notes about them, just in case.
love all my pokis. can't pick 5 😞
If my list was legit, my top 11 would have been all pokies. Their my favorite genus by far. hahaha :)
Tom Moran Yours and mine both. although I do have a variety of genus. those by far top them all
They're almost in a league of their own!
#5 Ceratogarus marshalli - straight horned baboon
#4 Heteroscodra maculata- Togo starburst/ornamental baboon
#3 Pterinochilus murinus- Usambara Orange baboon/sunburst baboon/OBT
#2 Pterinochilus lugardi- Fort Hall/Dodoma baboon
#1 Poecilotheria vitata- Ghost ornamental tarantula
Awesome list! I was JUST eyeing a P. lugardi. Might have to pick one of those up. :)
Tom Moran I found mine to be lower key than an OBT, as I remember. Haven’t seen too many for sale since.
Hey Tom great video dude you should have a show about Tarantulas on Animal Planet a series of episodes instead of UA-cam
Hey, Steve! Happy New Year! hahaha. Man, thanks so much. :)
There is no nasty or mean spiders. The only one who are mean and nasty, is humans. A spider can't think evil thoughts.
Keep up your good videos.
Agreed completely. :) Thank you!
4:28 want it!
One of my favorite species. :)
I get obt
Congrats!
