I love how you call your creative quilts "pattern less projects". I never use patterns, just wing it and have being winging it 55 years. This is a very beautiful project.
Thank you! Yeah, I think some people het stuck on the patterns and the rules and the precision when it comes to quilting. No patterns sounds like a great expression for freedom and creativity 😁
What a lot of FUN you are!!! Oh my gosh, this will be the perfect project to do with my granddaughters! I love your smile, cheerfulness and the little video clips you include re: birds outside, your doggie etc… Bravo! Bless you
Sandy you hit the jackpot. I love watercolors. I have had the Moscow Idaho quilters book for about 15 years. 3 years ago I started a hexie quilt top . It is in my drawer to add borders it was done in watercolor style and took over 2 years to sew. I did not fussy cut. Turning the squares over makes for good blending. My squares were sewn together and I love it. I am not crazy about the zigzag. I feel like it distracts from the beautiful picture. Wonderful job. Yes it is less complicated then it looks. Glad you took us along on your journey. TY
Raw edge applique. My Mom did this with my niece's Two Lip flower quilt. First, she machine sewed straight stitch (white thread) around the 3 flower pieces. Then with 6 strand (black) embroidery floss, she blanket stitched over the white thread. My niece was 3 years old and my Mom wanted the Big Girl (twin size) quilt to last. She's 43 now and her 25 year old daughter has it.
Love you sharing your discovery and completion of this project and it turned out adorable. Love the tip of turning around fabrics to get a lighter shade too. I love doing that! It makes existing fabrics more versatile. So cute!
Loved this quilt idea. I have been looking for this type of quilting for a while now. Also, love your upbeat, fun and loving personality! I subscribed and will enjoy! Watching from Arizona, USA
"... I just keep making life harder and harder for myself ...." 😮😢😅 . I love your project and it's doable (i got too much fabric too) .... maybe one day. The black bird accent was genius!
Oh wow Sandy, you have excelled yourself!! It's beautiful. I want to make one too. I have an idea to make mini quilts and display them in my sewing room but so far I haven't made any mini quilts. This just may be THE ONE. Loved this video. Thanks very much Sandy.
Beautiful quilt! I'm in the process of making a Monet style watercolor as well. I got several colors of painterly petals fabric and cut them in 2.5" squares. I'm hand sewing them all together though. It's turning out great.
You look at fabric and you see potential beauty. I look at fabric and I get cramps. I need a pattern, a list of material, and step-by-step directions. The watercolor came together creatively and I love how the bird’s branch looked like a branch. It was rough instead of smooth. Well done! 🤩🤩🤩
This is beautiful and a great idea. I am really bad at cutting out fabric pieces, especially if they have to match in size. I just don't have the needed patience. So I usually buy pre-cut fabric squares and pieces (including the small size you used for this project). I'm going to give this watercolor quilting a try. BTW your zigzag looks great. I clearly need to upgrade my sewing machine to get a better zigzag stitch :-)
I love it! Well done video, excellent tutorial. Presented in an engaging way. It looks easy to do and easy to follow. You could “fussy cut” squares as you are processing your scraps. I am inspired. Thank you.
Re cutting the squares. As you have fabric you can not use, cut the fabric bigger than you need. That gives you room to use a square ruler and a rotary blade. Thanks for this idea.
I like how where she placed the bird the little cat squares which she said was her favorite looks like it’s looking right up at the bird perfect placement
Very pretty. Is looks like a very easy task but i wonder how long it took you to complete it. Yup! You're right, i always overthink and finally scrap my ideas and don't start!😂
Ohhh cette vidéo m’a fait craqué !!!! ❤ j’ai réalisé un watercolor quilt mais je n’arrive pas à vous mentionner sur Instagram 😢 Merci pour toute cette inspiration !!!
You should play with Ten Sisters grid (multiple sizes) and their pattern books. No glue needed, just an iron when you have your pattern the way you want it.
I took the day off from my job to get some things done around the house. Now I want to forget about that and do a watercolor quilt instead! Which should I do???
Wait, it’s not as complicated as I thought? And can use up the tiny scraps I hold on to because pretty? And the waste can easily be mixed into stuffing? And it’s organic/free form? 🥰😍🤩🥳
Hi. It's called batting and it can be anything that creates height. But.you can also make quilts without it, like the Victorian crazy quilts. Traditionally a quilt is made of the top, the batting in the middle and a backing fabric. I like to call that the quilt Sandwich. And we bind the 3 layers together by sewing the 3 layers together, which is what we call quilting. Then there's the binding that's the strip around the quilt that essentially closes the quilt. Hope that helps, have a great weekend!
Can this be washed multiple times and still hold up well since there aren't any stitches around the bird and branch? I have a similar project coming up and would love to know! Ty
Yes, but it would have to be a bigger surface to make the subtle wash. I picked smaller squares to have room to change the values without it being too obvious.
Crumb quilt those leftover fussy-cuts. NO GUILT to cut bits out of "perfectly good cloth". Make two fabulous quilts and have no useless bits at the end. ))))

Yes or designing squares in the heat n bond would work as well 😁
good practice for you, with the zigzag...
Yes
I took the day off from my job to get some things done around the house. Now I want to forget about that and do a watercolor quilt instead! Which should I do???
For me a day off from work is to be enjoyed, not replaced with more things to do. Enjoy your off time, do the watercolor quilt, it will be worth it 😁
Am going to challenge myself....to paint a watercolor painting with hearts ❤❤❤THEN do a quilt block with ❤❤❤
That sounds beautiful 😍
I’m new to Heat and Bond. Did you put your squares on the adhesive/shiny side?
Hi. Yes, the other end is a removable protection.
Ohhhh...so much work , but it's really good looking. How many time do you need.
The part that takes the most time is cutting the squares, from there it's about an hour 😁
Wait, it’s not as complicated as I thought? And can use up the tiny scraps I hold on to because pretty? And the waste can easily be mixed into stuffing? And it’s organic/free form? 🥰😍🤩🥳
What is the stuff that they install to make the quit puffy? What are the different layers of a quilt?

Hi. The bird was sewn into the quilt, I used an applique stitch.
I would have used 3" squares and sewn them together. That way you don't need so much heat and bond.
Yes, but it would have to be a bigger surface to make the subtle wash. I picked smaller squares to have room to change the values without it being too obvious.
