      @I'm_Rand Khan I reread that last comment and it didn't make much sense in terms of pertaining to this scene in a movie. I like that ya just joined youtube in October, but why go to this clip, OF A MOVIE, and say all this meaningless shite? Anyway, I'm no longer in an mood to argue with a "dude" who's clearly looking for conflict. Have a good life.

    Watching this as a kid I totally sided with Mark and thought Vanessa was super uptight and annoying, but watching it back as an adult I realize that Vanessa is a grown ass adult and Mark is the dictionary definition of a man child.

      I fault him more than her, but I don't think she's 100% in the clear. She didn't support his hobbies or passions, just shoved everything into his man cave to keep a sterile home. The reason he started developing feelings for Juno (which was, of course, super creepy and inappropriate) was Juno actually engaged in what he cared about instead of treating it like it was stupid. Guys have an emotional need for that, which his wife was neglecting. His wife was so caught up in what she wanted that she ignored who he actually was: a guy with passions who never fulfilled his dreams and also who never grew up. I don't think there's anything she could have done to make him be the adult and father she needed him to be, but also if she ever meets that adult and father, he will still have passions and childish things he enjoys that she needs to make space for in their life together.
      This moment of realizing they can't go forward together would have happened a long time ago if they'd both been able to be honest with each other and allowed one another to be who they actually were.
      . . . But yes, he's a total man child, 100% agree.

      I'd say his biggest fault was not being honest about the gap between him and his wife much sooner. But again, it would take a more mature person to know that and do something about it.

    • @Rose-oh4mc
      @Rose-oh4mc 3 роки тому +68

      @Diane Berg No, there is nothing immature about not wanting to have children. He just couldn't realize that or have the communication skills necessary to tell his own wife that until it was almost too late. He's also like 35 years old and moving into a grunge loft to chase sex drugs and rock and roll and to live like a college kid. There's nothing wrong with playing in bands for fun when you're that age, but Mark is the type of dude that will be like 46 years old and working a bunch of odd jobs because "I'm about to hit it big just you wait" That is immaturity.

They are often deal breakers and they always come up sooner or later.. And thats okay. You dont carry-on the rouse that you’re OK with it and post ads in the paper for a baby and lead your wife on who desperately wants children just to callously disappoint her in the end. What he did was just so hurtful.

      Sometimes people don't know what they want. A lot of people think that they will get married and have kids because that's what they everybody does. Some people regret it later. My theory is that he was relieved when they couldn't have kids and maybe didn't know until then he didn't want any, and when it was finally happening he chickened out.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 4 роки тому +62

      Then many people wouldn't get married. Life is difficult. People make mistakes. Marriage is often about compromise. Love comes and goes; sometimes people search their whole life for it.
      It would be optimal to make sure that every little detail of their life fits together. In an ideal world, that would be the case. But our world is imperfect. We fail, we evolve - and yet we try to keep going no matter what.
      Marriage... A bound for life. If a normal couple makes it official, we don't care much, do we, if they throw us a feast, dress up and exchange rings, suddenly all their human flaws are gone in the eyes of society. We shouldn't make the mistake to assume that being married makes people better or worse.

    I feel sorry for both Vanessa and Juno; Vanessa because she’s tried to conceive and has always wanted children and Juno because she wanted to have a stable environment for her child, as she knows she won’t be able to bring up a child by herself. Mark will have to know what he wants before he married Vanessa.

    • @harringt100

      It's really hard to truly "know what you want" before you get married. Everyone changes over the course of a marriage. Everyone has issues being fully honest with themselves before (and during) marriage. I'm not defending Mark here. I'm just saying pretty much everyone will marry thr "wrong" person or will marry for the "wrong" reasons or under "false" pretenses. It's a question of how committed each person is to adjusting their expectations and their own behavior to make it work.

      I agree! This movie had came out when I was about 15 and at the time I didn’t think anything of him and Juno spending all that time together but now I see how gross it is that a grown married man is spending so much time alone with a 16 year old girl, slow dancing with her and telling her she’s beautiful it’s beyond inappropriate. He was clearly having some kind of midlife crisis especially with the baby on the way from the surrogate mother off of the ad HE posted himself and Juno was someone he could live through and make him feel young again which is so pathetic! If he genuinely felt like he wasn’t ready for kids or even wanted kids for that matter, maybe he shouldn’t of put that ad up in the first place and if he was really just so unhappy and feeling he’s no longer in love with his own wife, maybe he should’ve acted like the adult he’s supposed to be and communicate with her not sit back and just do everything she wants.

    Ok imma sum it up for everyone in the comments who doesn’t understand this plot and has different opinions over what’s going on and who’s in the right / wrong.
    Vanessa was wrong to try and suppress all his hobbies and interests, for sure, that’s not cool. HOWEVER, they’ve been supposedly trying for a baby for 5 years, meaning for 5 years he led her to believe that he was in and that they BOTH wanted a kid and that they were in this together. Suddenly when they’re about to have a kid though, he starts to have second thoughts and wants to back out, even though he made it seem like he agreed, which is a betrayal to his wife, he deceived her essentially, and he doesn’t tell her how he’s feeling, and selfishly decides that he’s going to leave her out of the blue with no notice, ruining her life and chances of having a child. It’s selfish not because he wants to pursue his dreams, but because he lied and did it out of the blue, knowing that it would hurt her and not caring to discuss the baby matter with her. On top of that, he starts developing a creepy interest in a minor; Juno doesn’t have bad intentions, which is shown by the fact that she is completely not into it when he tells her he’s going to leave his wife, her intentions were innocent, his were not. He was creepy, he crushed on a kid and betrayed his wife by 1. developing feelings for someone else (a child) (when they’re about to have a baby of all times lmao) and 2. Lying to/ deceiving her.
    The lying is the thing that everyone seems to be missing here.
    All the people that keep saying that he dodged a bullet and he has the right to pursue his dreams, yeah everyone has the right to pursue their dreams, but he deceived his wife and hurt her in a horrible way in a very sensitive/important time, y’all have literally no emotions if you think what he did was morally acceptable.
    Oh one other thing, young/immature people think that Vanessa is a villain but people with a clear head will realise that she isn’t, she has a type A personality and she can be obsessive/wants things to be perfect, but she’s not a bad person, we can see the kindness in her when we see her playing with a kid at the mall, she’s just a woman who wants a child and you can’t shame her for that and you can’t say that she was forcing it on her husband; trying to have a kid for 5 years is a pretty damn clear indicator that he wanted kids too, except in the end it turned out that he didn’t and he was lying to her all along. 5 years is a long time and he could’ve come clean at any moment but he chose not to, and when they finally were getting a chance to have a kid, he chooses THAT time to tell her, actually he doesn’t even do that lol, he just decided to straight up leave her.

      I don't even think that she was stifling his hobbies. Man had a whole ass room for it. A man cave. Yes, in Juno's eyes it is 'omg you only have this room' but it is actually not some horrible thing. It is a very generous compromise between him having a whole ass room for his hobbies and him decorating the whole house like a 70's rocker den.
      I just think that she probably ignored his tendencies and bad sides for a long time (because he certainly viewed his music room as the bare minimum, if even that) and so once he buckled down to crush all her hopes and dreams, she snapped and openly told him what she thought. Which was, no, you're not going to be a rock star. *bitch* XD

    It's very interesting comparing the perspectives of women growing up watching this movie and then the men. It shows the disconnect on both sides and actually, it shows how most people don't understand the message the filmmakers are going for with this storyline. The entire point of this subplot is that it's juxtaposing Juno's caring, understanding, and interest of Mark's likes and hobbies compared to Vanessa's indifference to it. This exposes the problem in the relationship. Vanessa is ready to settle down and be an adult, which naturally makes her come off as bossy and controlling and not understanding of Mark's interests or his feelings because she's wanting Mark to be at her level. Mark is still holding on to his youth and he's having second thoughts about settling which forces him to ignore Vanessa's cries for him to grow up. It's a story of two incompatible people getting married and Mark is realizing late into the marriage that this relationship and becoming a parent isn't for him. It's a movie with no villain or hero. If you're a woman in your mid 20's to 40's who saw this movie as a child or young adult you'll likely side with Vanessa. If you're a young man in a similar situation you'll side with mark. But the real answer is there is no side. This movie shows the nuances of a relationship and how knowing your partner you're marrying and communication is key in any relationship.

      Agreed. I understand both points of view- it’s extremely nuanced; there’s both nobody and everybody to blame. It’s waiting to take action, and both lying to themselves rather than making a clean break when the time was right.

    I think it's completely fine for Mark to leave. Him and Vanessa had been together for so long that they propably didn't realize that they had been growing apart so much. He loved her and she wanted a baby so bad that she got literally obsessed about it and I think he just wanted to make her happy while not being fully aware of his wishes being so different. They weren't compatible, but she was the one deciding about their life, while he just went along. I remember her character coming off as extremely controlling. Juno was the first one who remembered him of who he wanted to be, before Vanessas wishes had usurped his own and it was good to separate at that point. The only thing I'm not okay with is him making the moves on a minor. That was unacceptable.

      Honestly, his problem was less realizing he wanted a different life and asking for a divorce, and more trying to cheat on his wife with a minor and announcing his divorce to said minor before he even talked to his wife about it. It's a good ending none the less because everybody got what they wanted in the end: Vanessa, the baby; Juno, the chance to be a teenager; and Mark, his freedom.

      He's not a man child for wanting to pursue his needs, thats not the problem people were having its that he led this relationship on for however long and then only said something when they were gonna get a child and suddenly he realized he couldn't do it cause thats not the life he really wanted. That's not something you should wait till the last minute to express to your partner about. Plus telling Juno before telling Vanessa is wrong. She's not in the clear either though, she shouldn't have tried to push his hobbies and dreams down and make them seem unimportant. His decision to leave was the right one for sure

    What do you all would have wanted Mark to do? Go on with the marriage and be a sucky dad because he didn't want either of those things? He took the right decision, and no, nobody is entitled to a baby or parenthood, so he didn't really take anything from Vanessa. She has as much a right to have children as he has the right to choose not to have them. Everyone lived happily ever after thanks to the decision he took. Otherwise Vanessa and him would've been in a living hell of a relationship while raising a kid, and we know how kids in that type of environment turn out.
    Edit: not to mention that all the smothering and controlling from Vanessa is textbook abuse type of shit.

    • @Blast2224

      Mark is a grown ass man in his grown ass 30s. He had PLENTY of time to put his ego aside and tell Vanessa he wasn’t happy. Instead his EGO prevented him from just having a damn talk with her and all of this would have been avoided. It’s so STUPID how people will literally go entire decades without communicating and then act like it’s crazy when the truth comes out like held in vomit.
      You don’t marry a woman who wants children if you don’t want children. You don’t cheat on someone if you want the comfort and stability of having someone waiting around. Mark was having a mid life crisis like most men approaching 40 do where they cheat and try to reclaim sensations from their 20s and instead of being honest, he had to rely on a teenage girl to tell his wife something he didn’t have the balls to do himself.
