Hard to explain but when i was 6-7 years old collecting cards, i knew instinctively what the symbols meant because better card had cooler symbols but i don't think i would've figured it out if it was letters, nor my parents. Especially that i'm french and all cards were in english cause im canadian lol
probably due to regional differences i figure. Like if the English cards were distributed in different countries other than the united states their demographics would have people of various different languages so using English letters might have been confusing for one demographics but super simple for another while in Japan is vastly Japanese speakers, which i think is still an odd choice to use English letters but if that's what makes it easier for them to catch on then i suppose it makes sense.
I'm always mesmerized by the shiny magenta color of the Ace Spec cards. I enjoy seeing them gleaming in the pack. Sometimes no matter how hard you try not to spoil it for yourself, the pink can't help but make itself obvious.
I love how the video is laid out and edited when you talk about them and showing where they are in the pack. Its reslly helpful. Also it's not that important, but something to also note is that for SIRs, they will only ever be either an ex pokemon or a trainer.
With the new sets and the large amount of commons and uncommons compared to rares it feels like the rares are actually the most common cards. As an example Twilight Masquerade has 76 commons, 55 uncommons and only 16 rares. Sometimes you won't even pull every single common and uncommon when opening a whole booster box.
Nice overview! I’ve been trying to document older rarities in Japanese and there are quite a few undocumented. For example, Old shining cards would get a "★★★" rarity but there’s no official name for it and some sites just call it a “Holo rare”
That is actually what sparked this video! I started with “Every pokemon rarity explained” but it got way too big too fast. I’m the future I will cover all of the old rarities
In older cards (any card before Scarlet and Violet), there was only 4 rarities (5 including Promos), and anything above a Rare would be an Ultra Rare marked with a shining white star, so it was much harder to know how good of a card you got by simply looking at the rarity. I think this system of more layered rarity is better, but the Japanese ones still make more sense.
Something funny i've noticed as i've started collecting again is how Hyper Rares are less sought after than SIR/SAR's, it was funny seeing my gold Mew Ex going for like nothing compared to any of the full art ones lol
That last statement was technically wrong actually. In prize pack series 3 (and possibly 4) you are able to pull a lucario ex and an ampharos ex with a play stamp. These cards came around in ex battle decks meaning they still have the promo symbol. So yes you can technicaly pull a promo from a booster pack
Really well done. Thank you for making this. I kinda wish we used the letter system like japan. I think it makes more sense abbreviated. Kind of funny we use to use charactures and icons in English and japan uses English alpha letters across the board.
Hell yeah dude, thank you so much for this. I just picked up a paldean fates pokemon centre elite trainer box and was a little overwhelmed with what's more rare than what. Weird though that the rarer the card doesnt mean worth more, lol.
Ngl, I was always that kind of kid who loved Promo card, people would just say they are worthless and uninteresting, so I managed to get my hands easily on a good amount of them To this day I value and cherish them more than X / EX / V cards I got from booster Am I the only one?
As someone who grew up with gen 1-3, seeing these new cards just makes my eyes widen hahaha.. That new Caterpie card is beautiful, i'm glad the youth of tomorrow can also enjoy the cards (though not play with them like we did back in school.. ouch..) Yeah we used to flip pokemon cards on wet asphalt during recess, and there would be a big crowd of hyped kids watching, rarity meant nothing to us. ;)
I gave never seen any rarity beside common, uncommen and rare(and energy) in 8 years of collecting Pokemon cards (2015-2022). Maybe this system is new or it isnt used in Germany, idk.
This could not have come at a better time, so good in fact i'm a little suspicious... because i have in the last week fallen down the TCG rabbithole, and while my video game knowledge is on point i am way out of my depth with the cards - this video has ticked the box of understanding how lucky/unlucky my first few pulls have been Have a thumbs up and a subscription because i am sure to need guidance again!
great video for beginners to the TCG, but it’s still missing some information; mainly the differences in the rarity system of sets before the Scarlet & Violet era. another thing to note is the difference between Basic Energy cards and Special Energy cards. unlike Basic Energy cards, Special Energy cards always have a rarity attached to them and are usually Uncommon. hopefully I don’t come off as overly pedantic here lol, I’m just passionate about this game and want to inform others too. if anyone has any other questions, feel free to let me know!
I'm an old MTG player, my son is looking to get into Pokémon & in an effort to understand rarity in cards so we can start his collection, this is somewhat confusing. My knowledge of tier cards rarity is common, uncommon, rare & ultra rare. This though is like 10x that... Guess you just learn as you go.
Holy shit this is the most complicated crap lol. Usually It's just common, rare, legendary or something. They really smoked some strong stuff in that board meeting room.
i have a psa 9 miriam if you would be interested. i have a weird tendency to pull trainers (out of 10 9 were trainers) and miriam was my best pull so far
As a collector from the 90’s to early 2000’s, collecting rare Pokémon cards was a lot easier than it is in today’s market. Since coming back to collecting which rarity cards are best to collect that will maintain its value in the future?
It’s always changing but right now everyone wants the Special Illustration Rares (SIRs). They have the highest market value. In the Sword & Shield era, it was all about Alternate Arts and they are pretty expensive to collect now, even though it’s only been a couple years
It’s because the hyper rares (gold cards) are just glorified ultra rares, the special illustrations ones are more impressive than just making the card have a different color
When I started collecting, I distinctly remember sets using white for the colours of rarity I.E. white stars, circles and diamonds. Was there anything significant to this? Or was it simply a design choice?
so since this is a month old does this mean they completely changed up the rarity system? I remember people in my state referring to some types of rares as different names. I think the term "rainbow rare" was dropped as well but i don't remember the rest. If the rarity system has changed do you think you can do a video on how the rarities have changed over the years? I also might be confusing the rainbow rare thing with another card game i tried to get into as well called flesh and blood.
The rarity system in my video is the current system. They switched it up recently. Rainbow Rares are now a thing of the past. I do plan on making a more detailed video about ALL rarities but it’s a hugely complicated topic
I made another video for rarity symbols BEFORE Scarlet & Violet: ua-cam.com/video/WhvyuG7sG2g/v-deo.html
Now, why do the Japanese markings make more sense...
That's what I was thinking 😂
Thats what I don't get. The japanese have easy to recognize markings. Why do we still have those stupid stars?
@@DrPlonk in my opinion the stars are nice, maybe it’s a little childish but I like them

This channel is way under appreciated for how well made his content is
Thank you!
Good channel
Agreed
Thank you so much for this super informational video. I'm a dad of two budding collectors and this helps me talk the talk! Subscribed. Cheers.
Thanks!!
Thanks for explaining this. Very straight forward and clear to follow!
Also importantly, you're only allowed to have one Ace Spec card per deck

Man your videos are just great, love the editing and the channel idea. Cheers mate wish you all the great!
Thanks a ton!
I appreciate you immediately getting to the point, as opposed to a 4 minute long intro.
Another great concise video that will certainly help beginners, nice one mate!
I’m just getting back into Pokémon cards after 20 years and I needed this breakdown I was confused as hell.
Awesome video! Also love the play of words for your channel name. The page ripping sound jump scares me every time haha
When explaining something this tricky, I feel 1xspeed is perfect. Great pacing !!! Thanks , keep up the great work!!!
The Japanese system is way more understandable lol
Fax they just have little letters that represent the rarity
Hey cool vids! subbed keep up the good work!

I kinda took a big break right after sun and moon. Just was looking at new cards and was thrown off by the changes. Glad I found your video.
Super informative. To someone who hasn't thought about cards for 20 years, it was great to be brought up to speed

It’s still weird to me how “common” holos and ex’s are
it's just shiny bulk
I mean a lot of the ex's aren't competitively viable. I opened 14 packs so far of the latest release and only got one viable ex.
I remember how rare EX’s were in Black & White. Those were the good old days
@@GreenLeafUponTheSky I’ll raise you gen 3 when you would only get 1 or 2 a box and never had a set pull rate

Special illustration rare are only for EX Pokémons
Were the Hyper Rare place a replacement for the Rainbow cards back in the SM and XY?
Where would GX, V, VMax, VStar, Trainer Galley, Galarian Gallery & Rainbows fit into this rarity order?
