    thank you Maria for the very helpful video............I haven't been painting because often there is great sadness here, but someday I hope that perhaps I will be again to regain the enthusiasm for it.............you are always so inspirational...............I have been watching your youtube videos and some teachable classes for years...........they are put together so very well, and a person can learn so much from them............however, a loved one of mine has had many health problems, and I am sometimes too overcome with grief to enjoy painting..............I hope that someday I might be able to get my strength up again...............watercolor paints, papers, etc. are very expensive, and I cannot always splurge on top of the line products, but I do have some Arches paper and Holbein watercolors, in addition to other brands...............when I first started to learn watercolors a bit more than 6 years ago, my teacher at the local library sold kits with series 400 Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper and Grumbacher Academy paints.........also some of my brushes were from Starving Artists, which I think she got from Cheap Joe's.............it is not that these were "terrible" materials, but as you say, if you are going to glaze many layers and lift up for highlights, the paper will make an enormous difference................I thought I was getting a "bargain" once on some watercolor paper at a local art store, but saw that some paper is absolutely terrible............it will start to fray and pill when even the initial layer is applied..........also, some of it will take the "salting technique" extremely poorly and will leave strange artifacts, rendering the entire painting unworkable............I feel that at my stage it is more important to think about quality vs quantity............when not painting something that demands a lot of layers, lifting, etc., ie just a bit of a "doodle" thing to warm off, then some of the less expensive supplies can be okay............have a lovely day Maria!

      @@mariamorjane it was only the 24. I made it work fo a bit then ordered quin magenta and thalo blue.. Must haves. This set came with cobalt geen. Im impressed. Very clean and bright colors from the tube or after a week in the Meedan palette, also on not so great to arches paper. Yellow/ grey? Ok it makes a great sand color. Or storm clouds. Im still at the end of the pneumonia. It came back 2xs so im building back strength to sit up and paint. Hopes are high. Sometimes it takes new paints! :)

    Maria is one of the main reasons why I jumped back into watercolor painting. Been following you for some years now and though I barely comment nowadays *cries forever* it's because am out here creating and i have Maria to thank for that! You made watercolor painting for a colour pencilist at the time very not-scary! #omgmyenglishwhat

    I agree 100% on sketching over tracing. I don't count out tracing, if you're working on actual color or brush techniques for example. But drawing in general, practice actually does make perfect when it comes to perspective and realism. Great video!

    Thank you for sharing! ❤❤ I upgraded my brush first and paper last. 🙈 Someone told me that Arches can be painted on both side.

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  4 роки тому +3

      Your welcome and lol🌹☺️but now you have the paper 😀And yes, that's what Arches brand says that you can paint on both sides. But I tell anyone that doesn't like Arches to try to paint on a smoother side of Cold Pressed 140lb. The rougher side of Arches Cold Pressed 140lb doesn't work for me, the colors get muddy and it's hard to lift up. When you buy Arches Cold Pressed 140lb sheets, there's no problem with the paper, their sheets are different comparing to pads... But I talk more about this in a video 🤗

    • @ysaichama6051

      @@mariamorjane Thank you so much for the information! 😍❤I just know that their sheets are different comparing to pad. Hi Maria, I enjoy all of your tutorials! My question is, how do you store your watercolors? My art teacher says to store the tube pallets in the freezer. Is this really necessary? Some of my colors have cracked using this method. 🎨

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  4 роки тому

      Hi Linda🌹😀, I am not familiar with this method, I have never heard of freezing paints.. hmmm maybe traditional method? For the most part it depends what watercolors you are using. Holbein's watercolors never crack or mold... The travel palettes I don't use often I just keep in a plastic bag, never had any issues, paint is still the same even after 3 years. Paint in tubes I keep in aluminum containers after cookies 😁
