super helpful. I had not realized that there would be any advantage to not adhering my paper flat to a surface on all sides or that I could apply so much water. It makes sense now that you have demonstrated it. Thanks sooo much!
Thank you very much. This was extremely useful. I do not usually do a whole large painting as you do but even if I want to paint a small painting I fight with the water. I like to make a background after I paint a certain animal or character and sometimes it stresses me out because after I am carefully wetting around the painted portion it is already dry elsewhere. I am going to try and keep it up longer and see if that works better.
I love your art style!!! :) All your paintings look so smooth because of the wet in wet technique. I just recently started painting and sceneries like you are painting really inspire me. This is something I'll definetely try for my paintings.
Thanks so much for sharing your technique of wetting the paper. I also paint on glass and spay the back of the paper with water before I lay it on the glass. It kind of creates a suction bit helps keep it more uniform with very little buckling. I like to use my hake brushes for wetting the paper as they are softer and I feel I get a better and uniform coverage. Thank you so much for sharing with us and answering questions. 💕🖌🎨💕🖌🎨💕
Hi Pat, thank you for sharing as well🥰🌸I just love to paint on glass top table, it makes such a huge difference, doesn't it? I barely have any issues with my paper buckling because of that suction you just described 🥰
I think it also depends on the quality of paper, like i use brustro 25% cotton 300 gsm water color paper but it dries out real quick no matter how long i take to wet it, other reason being the temp as i live in Rajasthan (India) which is most often quite dry & humid. I believe we should settle for nothing less than a 100% cotton 300 gsm cold pressed paper only & make sure to turn on AC in ur room or also use a water spray bottle to spray ur paper when it's getting dry. Maybe these tips can work.
great video and interesting tip about not taping the paper directly to the surface but only the corners !! I’ll def. try that 😊🙏🏻 and plus I noticed that good watercolor paper can also be key .. some cheaper brands don’t carry and keep the water as much I feel .. anyways, great video !!!! I like your work so much and can’t wait for your next video ✌🏻
Thanks for sharing, Maria. What was the paper you used on the vídeo? I ask because not a lot of watercolor papers can hold that much water without buckling.
Hi Renee☺️🌸that's the thing about taping it just by the corners, my paper doesn't buckle. The paper can easily "breathe" and the water, if any.. can easily get under the paper which I am sure helps to keep the paper flat and in place since my papers are placed on a glass top table, the glass is part of the trick🤗🌸
Great video! Exactly what we need to know. However, I tried it so hard but do not seem to be able to reproduce this effect. I used Canson Watercolor Paper Pad, 30-Sheet, 9-Inch by 12-Inch, X-Large, 300mg, cold press (the blue cover one) and wetted the surface so carefully with my blackvelvet 3/4 flat brush. However, the first wetted portion (e.g left upper corner) already becomes dry even before I finished wetting the whole paper (working on the right lower corner), and I did wet it fast. I kept wetting it multiple layers just like Maria demonstrated here, one layer after another and being generous with water (without creating a puddle of water), working that 2 minutes as we said. I wetted until the paper starting to buckle, but it still dries up so fast before I have the chance to work on the wet on wet technique on the entire paper. And I thought I did everything as the video demonstrated. Would you have any advice? Is it the climate where I live? It is true that some parts of Canada is drier than other parts, but I am not living in desert neither, lol. Is it the paper? I just put in an order of arches watercolor paper 300mg cold press (green cover) that I see Maria uses a lot in her videos, because I really want to find out how I would be able to do landscape scale of wet on wet technic and of more than just one color, which is so beautiful but the surface to stay for a bit of time! However, I realized that as a beginner, there is so much to learn and great artists such as Maria are able to create their AMAZING artwork not solely because of their equipment but because of their mastery of technic, so not exactly sure if buying Arches, the fancy and more pricier watercolor paper would be able fix this for me. lol. Thanks a lot.
oh Shelly, I appreciate you sharing your supplies... ☺️🌹And the problem is: CANSON XL... oh my please stay away from this paper 😭basically run lol🤭This is one of the worst watercolor papers on the market. It's not just student grade, it's cheaply made.. Your watercolor paper is the foundation of your watercolor painting.. I cannot wait for you to try Arches. I don't just use Arches because its fancy or expensive, it is a professional grade watercolor paper and I hate to say this but you do get what you pay for, this is true when it comes down to most of the watercolor papers. Papers like Canson XL not just slow down your process of learning, they also discourage someone that's trying to learn how to paint with watercolors. They literally should be illegal lol. Canson XL will buckle, will rip, will get easily damaged when you use a pencil, drawing gum, try to scrub, lift, anything and colors will look pale...I hope they take it off the market... another good watercolor paper is Hahnemuhle Cezanne or my newest favorite Hahnemuhle collection (their newest edition)
@@mariamorjane Oh my god! Thank you so much. This IMMENSELY helpful. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I will check out Hahnemuhle Cezanne. And your newest favorite Hahnemuhle collection (their newest edition) , what is the name of that collection? Britannia? Thank you again, I do start to get a bit discouraged: working on CANSON XL, techinics often do not work out well. I start to get so confused that I am thinking of painting less. You just saved me from going further down on a path of abandoning watercolor! A million thank you!
Your so welcome Shelly😍and the newest watercolor paper by Hahnemuhle is called "Collection" but its very hard to find it right now.. you can email Carol to ask where to buy it in your country: carol.boss@hahnemuehle.com (she's super friendly!)
I just saw the tutorial with the moon and thought about just this; how can it stay wet all that time? Is it a medium to keep it dry slower? Now I know.
I have a question, whenever I wet my paper, and brush back and forth, the paper “sheds” and peels off. It forms little round pieces of paper that get all over my painting and ruins it! How do I prevent this from happening?
oh no, Dalia.. it's the paper, NOT YOU😔What kind of a watercolor paper are you using? watercolor paper is not supposed to do that... have you tried Arches?🌹
Maria Raczynska Okay that makes sense, I thought I was doing something wrong. I use canson XL and Masters Touch and they both seem to to that! I’ll try buying arches next time! Thankyou ❤️
oh no, I have to repeat myself...😔Canson XL is one of the worst watercolor papers (most Canson papers are not good) I came across this paper, it is not you Dalia, it is the paper 🥰
Good day maria! Understand now how tape works for you. I'm doing tape wrong, paper buckles. Thanks for showing better way. Always learn something from channel. Love your accent. Very restful. Hope you and family well, getting serious there. Take care...
Aww thank you Sir, I appreciate that a lot☺️and my pleasure, as always... my family is doing good. Thank you. Hope you are well too. It is getting serious and scary, I stopped going outside the house much.. I am worried about my daughter too much. Hope this is all over soon.
two very helpful tips I saw here - watering paper for 2mins and the way you tape your paper, very smart! thanks!
Thank you!

Great info! I’m in the California desert. Yesterday I wet the front and sprayed the back . It made a big difference.
😃😍
What a great video. I had these questions about how much water to use as a new watercolor painter.
Thank you🙋🏻♀️🌹

Thank you so much Mary😍🥰
Maria...this is SO HELPFUL...I can’t wait to try this! Thank you ✨
Your welcome Shari, hope you are well🌹🤗
Maria... I am well...my third day in self isolation. I will be painting a lot. Hope your family stays healthy and safe during all this ✨❤️✨
Glad to hear you are good and staying safe. We are doing the same, staying in self isolation. This is the best time to paint💐🌹
So helpful Maria thank you very much.

Hi Sandy, thank you so much for your kind words and yes, agree about the cheap papers, I always recommend Arches papers no matter what🌸🌸🤗
Thanks for sharing, Maria. What was the paper you used on the vídeo? I ask because not a lot of watercolor papers can hold that much water without buckling.
Thank you and this is Arches, I usually paint on Arches watercolor papers, in this video - Cold Pressed 140lb☺️
Hi thank you. The problem with me doing this is that my 300 gram watercolor paper starts damaging after only a few brush strokes. 😟
Thanks for the tips 👍
Your welcome🤗
Thank you. This tip really help. 😊
Thank you☺️
Thank you for the information tips.
Thank you Jeff☺️
What paper did you use though?
Hi Maria, How do you keep the larger sheet of paper from buckeling/warping if you only secure the corners to the table? Any tricks or ideas? Thanks 😘

Thank you 🤗
Great idea! Thanks for the tip. I am assuming that technique only works on 100# cotton paper?
Hi Tammy, I only paint on 100% watercolor cotton papers☺️
Here in the desert my paper drys faster. It helps to be in a humid environment.
Yes for sure, where I live sometimes it can be extremely dry too
I just saw the tutorial with the moon and thought about just this; how can it stay wet all that time? Is it a medium to keep it dry slower? Now I know.
Hi Ann-Marie, no medium used, just water over watercolor paper. I keep wetting it for a while before I start painting.🌹
Mam...when I apple water on paper ..than the paper starts blooming up..🙁
Hi, blooms happen when we try to add more water or water+paint to an area of the paper where the layer has started to dry...
Oooo...OK mam😊💓
