I think perfectionism is really common in most people who take their craft seriously. I found that mindfulness training really helped too! Being able to focus only on the music while playing and keeping the criticism for AFTER has been a game changer. Also one of my professors at university had a great piece of advice when talking about reviewing your playing/critiquing yourself: think of yourself as a close friend, how would you express your feedback? That was also really useful in only keeping the critique objective and not just tearing my performance apart. I've never found ego to be a good thing when trying to improve.
This is great! I talk about this SO much!! It’s so important to keep a good mindset when practicing. The negative mental chatter can really make the process awful and also mess us up more. I talk about this SO much on my channel :) awesome video!
Interestingly the "good book" says to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That same book also encourages us to think on what is lovely and praise worthy and excellent. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Nice video that will help a lot of people. I would really like to hear your thoughts on performing anxiety. Time for me seems to almost stop and I can't control my sound at all , like pressing a time stop button , mechanically playing and then getting back at thinking 😅. I know that I have to practice performing to get over it. But I don't know any practicing tips. I really want to be present at the moment and enjoy it. Hope I'll get there soon.
Thank you Angel! I made a video about performance anxiety if you want to check it out. I share some tips there (see time stamps). You’re right that staying present is really important and you can actually practice doing that before you perform.

That’s great advice. We’re often so much harder on ourselves than we are on others. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Ashlee! It really changes your practice experience if you can quiet the negativity.
@@StanleyDo AGREED!
I started playing the piano a year ago and I've been struggling with negative thoughts. Thank you so much for sharing this with us it means a lot.
I’m happy to share it :)
