The GMTK 2023 Jam had the theme of "roles-reversed." For my entry, I made a tower defense game where the player plays as the towers. It fits the role-reversal theme by having the player adopt the role of directly attacking enemies, while tower upgrading and management happens automatically.

Let's create this game together.
Your entry was tons of fun, you really have a talent for satisfying animations and polish!
I really admire your ability to make a juicy and polished game, it's crazy for me to have seen the game on like Saturday, and then to see how it turned out, the difference all the squash and stretch plus the particles etc. make is really just insane!
Hoping to improve and get to making games with that level of juice one day, great job as always Firebelley! And thanks for the streams, it was fun to watch the game "grow" ;)
The stealth game would be super interesting, you’re super creative man. Keep it up!
Thank you for the video! It was very inspirational and motivated me to try a few new mechanics
Awesome! It's neat seeing the whole process come to life!
Love your approach to animation! Awesome entry, the jam was lots of fun this year!
I love seeing what other people did for the theme it was a really good one. great video
Thanks for sharing your experience. It was very interesting to get insight in your design and dev process. :)
I played your game very fun
this is so cool, well done!
cool, you are great
Hello, I'm going through your Survivors course and Udemy, and it's WOWWWW! So good. If I have any questions, I'll try reaching out, but it's really clear-cut. I love your use of composition and making nodes the smallest possible. That was the biggest hurdle for me to understand Godot coming from a Python background.
The art style. The polish. The game JUICE. Beautiful. Astonishing. Phenomenal.
Bro this is better than PVZ this is Plants VS Farmers
This game looks excellent and scored really well. Congratulations!
Really enjoyed the game and this video highlighting the game amazing work keep it up!
Your art style is adorable ✨️
I think it would have been kind of neat if you had tried a stealth based tower defense game. Where are the NPC's try to sneak past and you can't see him until your tower spot them and then when your towers do spot them you would want to make a mad dash to build defenses around that spot to quickly crush the enemy before he can hide again.
I think it was the right call to shift gears. I do think that stealth game idea has some serious potential but it needs more time to cook.
nice ideas all round
The gamejam games keep getting better and better!!
the game is so fun to play, really enjoyed it
Your game looks fun and your art is getting really good man.
I bought your 2D survivor course on Udemy and I'm really impressed at how good you explain things and that you show how to structure a code base in Godot (something I was looking for).
Also, are you going to further develop the stealth game? It really looks promising.
Thanks! I have no plans to work more on the stealth idea at the moment
looks great! you're really good at making games satisfying. btw, what's the audio library you have?
It's not a singular SFX library - it's a collection I've been building up over time.
That said, the Soniss GDC bundles are absolutely amazing, many gigabytes of SFX free for commercial use.
Interesting! Good video, and btw if you don't mind sharing, I'm curious of how you created the vision cone effect shown at 0:55
It's a bit of setup, you can look up light masking in Godot and you'll find some good resources
@@FirebelleyGames Thanks for the reply, the setup I did for my game was to create different viewports and use shaders. Asking because I'm sure that exist a more elegant solution.
Either way thank you, your video really made me want to build a tower defence game now haha. Keep it up!
I really like the quality of your videos lol
Finnaly someone who uses godot
Bro you need a discord server!
Interesting idea, what if the energy source for enhancing your defenses was water. Different plants could draw on the water as much as you allowed. Simultaneously you can be trying to find ways to collect and reserve more water throughout the level while building defense is. I think this would fit the farm thing well.
Best dev youtuber
I also went with a stealth game for my submission, but I don't think it'll get any rewards any time soon.
It's hard to do it right
Would you like to join a pass the game challenge with @TheDelightfulDev @AsodiacAyve and Me?
Feels like PvZ adventure like game.
That's funny
I just finished your Udemy course and decided to make a tower defence for a game jam too
Me reading the title: PLaNt Vs ZoMbieS
02:26 hi, could you disponibilize the prototype for tiles creation that you've used here?
Do you plan to come back to this project after the jam? It seems really promising!
I am tempted to do so!
Please finish the stealth game!!
Good
Around 1:35 I see you're using VS Code it seems like just for version control, is this something you've done for a long time? I also find myself much preferring VS Code's ease of version control but unfortunately it's just a lil clunkier than the built in editor in my experience
Yes haha, VSCode's version control is so dang simple! I do usually do my coding in VSCode as well, just not this time.
@@FirebelleyGames to be completely honest I changed my workflow just because I saw you using it haha, I've considered doing it that way before but don't know why I didn't. Especially helpful when working with others
I never finished mine on the mobile editor):
How do you make the mathematical symbol less than or equal in your GDScript ?
It's called a font ligature - if you have a ligature-enabled font you can turn on ligature features in the editor settings
@@FirebelleyGames
Ok I will research this. I've only seen this in LaTeX.
a cool game ideo would be like you plant stuff and they like protect ur house from like thesee zombies and then you could like not get ur brain eaeten . like the plant s are AGAINST the zombies
i was thinking of grass that will stop the enemys for 10s and the higher level would be tall grass that will stop the enemy for 20s but you made a rose whith does that so m
do you use Unity ?
He uses Godot I’m pretty sure
can you make c# godot tutorial , the basics
I wanted to do Tower Defence, but you spend resources to destroy towers. Didn't do it on time sadly
Would cool if you do a video on using C# or GDScript i saw for your game you are using C# but for this game jam your using GDScript why is that?
Why not tower defense but you are attacking the tower?
I don't see how this is roles reversed, but cool video anyways.
Plants vs zombies
not the dogs...
