With a few tweaks, this concept alone feels like it could easily be expanded into something bigger and more complex. The addition of enemies, perhaps some other fish which you might be expected to prevent from being hooked, could add an interesting extra element here. I can dig this
Heh me and some friends actually made a game for the jam with the exact same premise (called Fishermanerfish). Very interesting to see how our end products differed. I especially *love* the artstyle in yours!
Great game, but I do have a suggestion. You know how every single game has a fishing minigame for some reason? Maybe you could ste- I mean, be inspired by a few of them, and you'd have to make sure the fishermen can't complete the minigame! There could be different colours of boats, and each one has a different minigame, each one pretty short, only a few seconds, to fit in with the arcade feel of it. It'd add a lot more to the game!
I just tried out the android version. It's fun! A suggestion: Adding a joystick button to control the fish would be great, cause touching the phone screen with my fingers for movement makes it difficult to actually see what's on the screen.
Thanks for checking it out! And yeah I wanted to add joystick movement but ran out of time with this, and all I did was switch the output to be android and left it at that. 😅 I'll probably update it once the judging is done, as I think it would massively improve the experience!
Such a cool concept! I love the animation for when the tentacle takes down a boat! Low key feel bad for the fishermen tho. Cant wait to see what video you pump out next!
With some miner tweaks and adding a full story with fun gameplay you can definitely turn this into a Steam game An idea for some achievements would be to have every unique way to die be a hidden achievement to surprise new players Example: the first time you swim into a sea mine and explode you would earn the achievement “Exploded” with its picture being the fish bursting into pieces while inside an explosion
This is my favorite game from GMTK 2023 (that i have seen atleast) i think it fits the theme very nicely! But when i played it i kept encountering a bug where the shell would spawn in the sky so i couldnt reach it... Other than that a really good game, with a very cool art style!
Would be awesome to see this expanded out, made have a large viewing area, and you're taking out larger ships over time. Maybe you also start having submarines trying to catch this "interesting" fish for scientific study.
This was great! I played it in the browser though and the conch phones kept spawning in the sky where I couldn't reach them, so I could never get more than 1 point.
Update Idea: Fishies Green fishy: The green fishy is a betta that follows Fin Diesel if you don't have a conch. When is close to a boat, the green betta fish will distract a boat for 5 seconds. When spawns, wanders around randomly until is picked up by Fin Diesel or goes off screen. Blue fishy: The blue fishy is a G'oldfish with a laser gun that follows Fin Diesel if you don't have a conch. When is close to a boat, the Blue G'oldfish will stop following Fin Diesel and will deal damage to the boat. When spawns, wanders around and is looking for red g'oldfish until is picked up by Fin Diesel or goes off screen. FallenFace: FallenFace is a large grey G'oldfish with 4 laser guns on it's sides that chases Fin Diesel until FallenFace touches a boat or Fin Diesel. When Squid Gamer destroys the rare Rock Mountain Pentagon, a timer of 35 seconds appears. When the timer ends, FallenFace spawns in to destroy Fin Diesel. When Fin Diesel gets destroyed by FallenFace, the death animation is different. Turtlo: Turtlo is a green sea turtle that follows Fin Diesel. When touched, Turtlo will give Fin Diesel more speed and a shell that protects Fin Diesel from boats. Still cracks to FallenFace. When spawned, Turtlo will speed across the map until is collected by Fin Diesel or goes off screen
New music: G'oldfish theme: plays the calm theme from An ordinary G'oldfish show. Plays when you pick up G'oldfish. I guess it's Fallenface time: Plays when Squid Gamer destroys the Rock Mountain Pentagon. The avengeance of rock mountain pentagons: Plays when time runs out in I guess it's Fallenface time
This looks lovely and fun! Will check it out some day, but I gotta say, the tentacles look like, well… a little too pink. I’m sure they would look great in another colour, though! 😅
So cool! If it is ok, I have a suggestion for difficulty: If you take too long to get rid of a particular boats, more boats come in or... perhaps patient zero boat could upgrade itself longer they are let to fish But, what would an upgraded fishing boat do, exactly...well here are my thoughts: amount of lines from a boat (adding an extra fisherman) proficiency at capturing fish (another mechanic I'll be referring to in section 2) Section 2: What if there unintrusive, mono coloured fish in the background- these fish could represent poor, misguided fish who didnt get the memo and gradually get caught by the fisherman above, this accelerates the fishing boat's skill level, incentivizing you to see what boat is catching the most fish (a visual indicator being the ship's hull, or just seeing how many fish are getting caught per second) The hull colour, above all, shows just the age of the boat, one may intruit it's stregnth on their own. Hypothetically, the boat could start off as a wonderful red, and as it gets older the shade becomes darker and more grimey, with barnicles starting to form on the bottom...perhaps glitter trickles down to the waters below Perhaps to catch the dumb fish, the line goes in and out of the water at varying speed depending on skill of the fisherman? This means the player must identify the strongest fishman and destroy his boat, and also must time it accordingly Another mechanic relating to score that comes to mind is creating a boat that is particularly sparkley! This sparkle is for a reason however and is oddly relevant: boat manufacturers are one of the world's largest manufacturers of glitter! This glitter can polute waters. Thus, the player has a dual incentive to destroy this glittery monstrosity. Lastly, what if the fishermen poluted the waters? This game is already a race against the clock as you dont want to have to manage too many boats and get overwhelmed, what if you enhanced the urgency by having richer boats litter more- a little bit of indirect story telling to characterize the nature of the fishermen is as they improve their catching skills, they become comically wealthy and rude, throwing more junk in as their hubris rises. It adds to the sentiment that the fish and the octopus shouldn't feel too bad for taking down these ships. Plus, as the litter gets worse, your visibility gets worse, leading to increased difficulty till you manage everything. Plus, too much litter could cause a game over. Oo! And after taking a boat down that polluted the waters a lot, a little octogang could clean the screen for you- spray bottle style or something I said lastly already but this section is lastly p2: What if you could upgrade the octopus as time progressed, there are a lot of bubbles that could be used. What if collecting bubbles increases the rarity of upgrade you can see? Dont get too greedy though, or you risk letting the chaos accumulate Sorry if I am imposing by sharing, this game concept just has so many possibilities!
@@sodapop2755 Don't apologize lol, thanks for the genuine comment! I've heard some pretty cool ideas from a bunch of other people, and maybe in the future I'll look into expanding this game further! Thanks again! :)
Fishing IRL is about trying to anticipate fish positioning based on season and species behavior. If I was a fish was trying to troll a fisherman, Tricking the angler to cast in unpopulated areas or to try in cast in difficult places such as around under sea hazards like shipwrecks would be priority. I imagine a mechanics similar to a stealth games guard distraction like whistles and noise makers. Intentionally jump out of the water to bait the angler over and away from your fishy friends, careful of any looming hawks ready to swoop you up. Nibble at the bait to leave a useless bare hook that won't attract any other fish in a delicate dismantling sorta like playing Jenga. Or Intentionally bite the hook then run under a log to wrap the line around the barnacles of a sunken ship to cut the line and steal the fisherman's lures. Maybe theirs enemy fish you want the angler to catch instead. Engineer it so the mean ol' barracuda finds the angler's lure before the barracuda finds the school of fish you are tasked with protecting.
Genuinely, I have NO IDEA why this even happens. it ONLY happens in the browser build which has the EXACT same code as the .exe compiled build, and the conch shell is hard coded to spawn at a certain point. You're the only one who mentioned this happening, I'll get onto figuring out wth is happening with it tho lol

Legitimately such a great game, really wish they would continue the franchise
