One of my favorite drummers (Dave Elitch) was called to try out for this gig when he was 26, and he has a story about this song that I love. TMV is notorious for their wild intense drum parts, but Dave got the gig based on his playing in this song. Everybody who got called was able to shred and go nuts on the kit, but Dave locked in on the groove in this song better than anybody else, and that’s when the band knew he was the guy. It’s all about that undeniable feel, not flash and blazing speed.
3 weeks later he was playing in front of 20000 people in stadiums across the world. There is a drum cam video of him in Sydney playing with ‘em. He’s a beast.

This might be your most succinct and accurate reaction yet. You called it on the hammonds (Ikey played a C3 hammond if I recall correctly, RIP btw), and the singer is not always at the highest point in the mix but his melodies cut through. In fact, this band is perfect for you because the lyrics are so much more of an instrument than a storyteller with Cedric. His lyrics can be fully absorbed as poetry but in the song they are best just seen as another layer of the composition. That odd latin rhythm you are picking up is a guajira, (Cuban and Puerto Rican jazz style), their guitarist Omar is a Puerteoriqueño, and is the primary composer. Their drummer Jon Theodore is the most desired drummer in rock music, Metallica even wanted him, he currently plays for Queens of the Stone Age, and Juan Alderete is the preeminent bass tone master, working for earthquake devices and playing for Marilyn Manson these days. This band and its current hiatus have been a massive driving force behind the progressive elements in pop and rock music of today. Even Kanye West is a huge TMV fan

I heard someone mention it before, and I'm commenting this before I watch the video so you might mention it too, but I think it's very neat from a songwriting perspective that the Latin instrumentals feature English lyrics, while the bits that sound more like a traditional American hard rock song feature Spanish lyrics. Nice symmetry.
