The thing on the bass is an old-school "tug-bar". Basically, you would anchor your fingers on it when playing the strings with your thumb. Sometimes they were on top of the strings for anchoring your thumb when playing the strings with your fingers.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but all these guys became friends in music school that they attended together as well as with Jack Conte (founder of Patreon), . It's been said before, but you cannot go wrong with Knower and if you ever get to see them live, do it!

When asked, LC says he has no idea what the interviewer is talking about. Alternative drummer options may include Nate Wood, another super musician. Personally, I think it's more fun to let the mystery linger, to the extent that there's any mystery.
