Good mental health practices definitely go a long way for streaming, and coping with low numbers/discoverability. It's ok to take breaks if streaming starts to feel frustrating or exhausting, and it's ok to end a stream early and try again another day if that day just isn't working out for one reason or another. Meditation at least a few times a week also really helped me with patience and delayed gratification.
I am still under 5 average viewers after 2 years and 3 months of streaming, and that's ok, because I genuinely enjoy my time doing it, and the company of the people generous enough to give me their time. I think my streams are pretty enjoyable to watch, but I still try to improve them over time with anything I can think of to add to them without taking away anything. My streams aren't for everyone, but no stream is.
Adopting better mental health practices kept me from quitting at multiple major breaking points where I felt a lot of self hatred and disappointment in myself for not achieving what I perceived as success at the time. I would love more chatters, or bigger numbers (like 15-20 big, but not bigger than that, because my primary reason for streaming is to talk with people and have conversations), but that number on its own wouldn't give me a sense of fulfillment. Those nights where I raid and I see 10+ people have stuck around to the end, even after I mention that I'm ending stream and that I'm about to raid, still feel really nice. I might be in the same spot in a year, or even 5 years, where my average view count doesn't grow, so I hope it's still just as enjoyable as a hobby to me then.
When I'm stubborn, neglect my mental health, and don't put my depression, anxiety, or aspects of autism like sensory overload or potential breakdowns/meltdowns from stress first, then it becomes much harder to stream, much harder to deliver enjoyable streams, sours the experience for me, makes it much harder to connect with people, and everyone who watches can easily read the atmosphere. I deleted the vod each time it happened. It felt awful every single time. And I don't want the people who care about me to have to see me that way when they're just trying to relax and vibe. I wish I learned that much sooner, but I'm glad I know now.
Main takeaway I'm trying to impart is that neglecting mental health by ignoring burnout and frustration, not only makes it much easier to quit much sooner, but it also makes being able to achieve goals a lot harder by making every single step more difficult. It can also push people away if it's too frequent by making them feel like nothing they do is good enough for someone, or by making them feel like it's their responsibility to constantly take care of a person and risk a bad outcome if they don't.

Turning off the viewcount is something I 100% co-sign on. It makes it one less thing to think about while on stream, and it makes it easier to get in the mindset of trying to entertain the viewers, even if they don't exist in certain given moments. If the mystery of "How many people are watching" isn't answered, then there is no reason not to go all-in and entertain to the best of your ability.
(I'm just speaking for myself right now, of course.)

SAME,once I get the view count turned off, I exist in the moment so much better... it removes a ton of stress

Turning the view count off helps me all the time. I'm more focused on seeing the chat being active. If it's not, that's fine, but it does help knowing that at least one person is there. Some of us have a hard time with a schedule, but looking at your numbers after stream might help what's a better time for people (regulars or not) usually come around. Hell, lately a certain game night is doing okay in my book even if I don't know who is there lurking.
I personally still need to work on videos for the hell of it (my friend keeps telling me to just post the dumb/crappy videos as much as possible), but i'm usually drained after work. Easier for me to just chill and play games that I've been wanting to play. Slowly trying to balance everything. Need to stop with the "why work on things when you can be playing video games?" mindset.

yes, if you mute the stream itself it doesn't count as a view and you don't receive points too, so I always mute the tab, because I love collecting points from streamers I like even if I can't fully engage in their stream at the moment. redeeming those points can also give some exposure, especially if there some good options, like some streamers have "gift you a sub" or "became VIP" or some other really noticeable and more personal rewards.

I enjoyed this. You made some great points. I recently had to start from scratch. I was part of a DJ duo where we live stream our DJ sets. We were growing and we also played at gigs. My former DJ partner decided to leave without a warning. He took our website down and cut off all communications with me. I rebrand myself as a solo act. My saving grace was I already had my logo and my own twitch channel. I already live stream and was part of a Raid train as mentioned before. Both have been a success. I have been coming to videos like yours to either add things to my channel or refresh my mindset. I decided to add things various music to play on my show and took things out. Note: I am not a full-blown content creator. This is a hobby and a labor of love. With that said, I still take it serious. It's my name and my brand. Asl a former blogger on House music, I built a reputation, to be honest, and having fun. When I got into this, my purpose is to let people know that I am a DJ and I love playing music and hope people will enjoy it. For me is that simple. Anything else is a plus. Each month, I broadcast 4 shows (3 on twitch). At times, I will get viewers, and sometimes none or 1. I try to keep the same energy. Why? Because I do this because I love DJing. Twitch allows me a platform to play the music I love and experiment with another Underground music genre.

@@HeyShadyLady thank you so much for the advice and taking your time out to comment. This made me feel better to try to take the next step and actually stream while keeping these thoughts in mind.

Im a new streamer and i think my bad habit is doing reeeeaallly long streams. Ive been playing horizon zero dawn for like 6,7,8 hour chunks but i cant help it cuz im loving this particular game but i think its becoming a problem because my playback numbers are very low because who the heck is gonna sit through multiple 6,7,8 hour streams? 😔 i do only stream once a week though and i dont cheat and play without the 4-5 viewers i do fortunately get. Sometimes i do get 0 views for chunks of time during my streams so this video is super helpful. anyone have any advice for my chunky stream problem?

Are you open to having one on one conversations like a zoom meeting or giving feedback (watching my stream for a couple of minutes)? I’m really interested in what you have to say about my stream. I know my stream is a bit different and probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea which is normal. I just really want a meeting with you. I am also open to emailing you to set up times.

i feel like these tips are too general, i for one stream for myself, since gaming is both my job and my hobby, but most people already know that the easiest way to go anywhere is by either buying in the 'clout' or using any 'wow-factor' or 'bait' there is out there, just to take off, that's why most of those, also either make it or loose that 'clout' for the same reasons in the long run. but meh, i really like the way you do these videos ^^

I'll be honest... Twitch is MUCH harder to build an audience on..
UA-cam is much better. My channel took off on UA-cam with relative ease.(Granted I'm not a gamer livestream) but i watch all my livestream gamers on youtube

Yes i need help with how to narrate to myself better, I am a low talker and I’m self conscious about how loud i am and my voice, I don’t have a nice voice lol, I don’t have different tones of my voice.. I am way too shy for a camera..
