  • hi friends~! i'm very excited about today's video... I got bit by an inspiration bug and spent a good amount of time scripting + editing! Today I'm dishing out some Tough Love for Small Streamers! We'll be diving into the vicious cycle of burnout and fear that really gets in the way of a lot of creators along their journey. I know this is still something I struggle with myself, but especially the first couple of years I was trying to grow my brand on Twitch, I was stuck in this cycle to a very detrimental degree 🥴 I hope this chat helps motivate and inspire you a bit, if you need it!

    you're such a refreshing voice in the streaming/content creation space. I've had similar conversations with people wanting to get into youtube/content creation feeling entitled to attention and views/viewers etc. and when I try to explain that a lot of this is a long-game and you have to sort of ... water it, nurture it like a plant ... they get discouraged. so glad I found your channel :) my only gripe is that I can never catch your streams since you're a night owl haha, but keep on doing your thing!

      you're right, its exactly like a plant!! you cant put the seed in the ground, and the next day get angry because you dont have flowers!
      and yeah, i'm a night owl and it's so FRUSTRATING lmaoo, i've tried to flip my schedule many times, but i think im just destined for the nocturnal life lmao

    Shady, you have no idea how helpful this was. You called me out with the "you're trying too hard" section, my mouth was wide open with shock when you mentioned overdoing the outfit and makeup! That is 100% me. And the part about watching other people blow up...definitely taking your advice and muting some people! The Minecraft creator community is volatile and toxic at times, gonna be conscious of how much time I spent being jealous of others and I'll devote that time to healthier practices. Thank you for your wisdom! :)

      omg I was lurkin the minecraft category the last couple of weeks because I've been thinking of trying to get more involved in it, and you're totally right... there's a lot of toxicity hidden in the corners (and some on full display) 😩 I really feel like I'll have to keep my boundaries up strong once I get brave enough to attempt to break in over there hehehe

    Shady lady I loved your perspective on this topic. About a year ago I watched your how to start twitch in 2020 video and it helped me a lot to get into the right mindset. I started streaming in March and now in October I feel like I’ve gotten a lot of momentum going without overextending myself. I would just like to thank you for the amazing advice that you’ve given me now twice. ❤️❤️

    i'm not a streamer, dont use twitch or watch streamers, and i still come to your channel just to hear what you have to say! i started watching because i work with kids who want to be streamers when they grow up, and i wanted to have solid, positive talking points for our conversations :) on my end, im going back to school to be an xray tech and im so nervous, and you really made me tear up watching this. spot on. no matter how we make money or spend time, you have given us solid advice. keep doin what you do, how you do, we'll be here watching and supporting from all walks of life. your personality is just so nice to be with, and your diversity of content will just keep getting you random followers like me!

    18:18
    This one hits home for me as I fell into this trap for a long time and only recently found my way out. To anyone reading, don’t get lost in the numbers like I did. Take a step back and remind yourself that you (hopefully) started streaming because you love the things you stream, the community around them and wanted to share that passion with others. Keep your head up and do what makes you happy! :)

    A lot of good advice in this video. I have told several smaller youtubers that I have talked with that the journey to 1000 subscribers is not the end of the road. They have it in their mind that they can amp it up and once they get there they start getting paid. I tell them it's a marathon not a sprint. One person in particular I was working with for a while, and trying to help him get that 1k, he finally made it, but didn't see the returns he thought he was going to get when he finally hit it, and has now taken a break for a while because he needed to earn money at a job again. I told him to keep doing the content on the side, on weekends etc, but he said he probably won't have time. People think you play video games, it's easy. It takes more work then they realize.

    i mean i also have some good reasons why my motivation has been bleh cus of work and physical health issues. but it has been hard to get back on that horse. which is why i started a vlog channel just to give updates on my personal life instead of gaming content. it's a diff direction, but it's keeping me in the groove of things again

    This was really nice to watch. It's advice coming from a really heartfelt, sympathetic, and hugely REAL perspective. I've felt pretty much all of these things at one point or another! I recognize myself in the "lazy", in that me and my ADHD are in a constant war of Make My Cool Ideas versus Shake The Internet Until Fun Comes Out. I can only push so hard, and do so much, and in the end I have to admit that my day and my week only has so many functional work hours in it. I can be both easier on myself when I run out of those hours, and push myself to use those hours to the best effect.

    I’m just at the very beginning of my journey. I can’t tell you how valuable your tutorials are in my journey.
    I’m working out real lighting/camera angles/access to upload speeds for live-streaming. I have to address these things before going live, as not doing so would render most of my live content unusable or against policy.
    So I’m moving towards post production for longer videos.
    Until I’m ready, I’m doing all the brand development and researching tools. But I’m closer daily because of the valuable information found here.

    Impatience is my nemesis. A good example was this week, and how I overcame my impatient urges. My viewership was in the toilet Monday and Wednesday. I wasn't sure what was up, I was playing Monster Hunter Stories 2, and I'd had plenty (for me) of people watching before, so where was everyone now? I thought, perhaps Friday I will throw a new game in the mix, maybe that will help. I decided to stick to my guns and keep playing MHS2, and to abandon the panic/impatience. Well, things worked out and I had 8X more viewers on Friday. I've learned that it pays to not be too reactionary when things aren't going well. Definitely think critically about your stream, but make sure you don't let yourself start looking for that instant gratification!
    P.S. Thanks for another excellent video

      I just want to help people!
      The other problem is that he seems to enjoy complaining about not having chatters, but doesn't care to DO anything to change that. So I still tell my viewers about him, but it's hard to be enthusiastic about it. He has to meet me/his viewers halfway, you know? LOL

    Interesting video! I think it's fascinating how one streamer can have all of these vices at various points, or just struggle with some of them. I actually find the Fear and Boring hurdles easier parts of the journey because I feel like when you're smaller with less viewers, there is less pressure on yourself. I think I struggle with Overscheduling (not even always streams, but just putting too much on my plate in general) and Flaky, but it's tough because sometimes your reasons for being Flaky or Lazy (it's hard to stream when tired! It's ok to treat yourself to a break!) seems valid. 🥺 Btw, I think a good topic for a video may be ads! Is it best to not roll them and let the pre-roll happen, only do them during breaks, schedule them super regularly to reduce pre-roll, try to do them both during breaks and during quiet moments (ie. Inventory management, loading something), and so on. Just an idea, thanks for the good video 💚

    • @HeyShadyLady
      @HeyShadyLady  2 роки тому

      A video covering ads is a great idea!
      And you're definitely right! We need to take care of ourselves, and sometimes laundry and a shower is WAY more important than a stream... its only when it becomes a pattern and an excuse instead of actual self care that it starts to create the flaky problem! Overacheduling and flaking are my biggest issues too 😩😩

    when I go to the part talking about talking in your stream, I can kind of understand, I either talk too much or too little but I also try and keep up a high energy, but I realized, if you keep a low energy and you don't talk too much, it actually works out a lot more. One of my favorite streams I did was when I was really tired and a little sleep deprived, so I was kind of funny to some people, and a lot more people started watching it then leaving. It's then I realised I need to calm down more in my streams and take it slow no need to have high energy all the time.

    Thank you for all your great content! Your channel is so helpful and informative.
    Just curious, would you ever do a video on the pros/cons of focusing on different kinds of content? Twitch tends to be gamer heavy, but I'm curious how you'd recommend approaching podcast/live show style content, art channels, etc. I feel like there may be creative people on twitch who might get discouraged and feel they aren't growing because they're not gaming on the platform.

    ive been streaming on and off for a little over 2 years. and I gotta say. this video made me feel quite a bit better about myself. when you said "you're afraid of success" that is my biggest issue. my partner tells me all the time, "why are you so afraid of being known? why does being good at something scare you so much?" and ive always came back with "im not good enough. i cant do what I want to do because, it wont matter" and he told me one day "you've dealt with negative people through people you've dated. and they've torn you down. im here, im pushing you to do things you want. DO IT...ENJOY IT" I still get in moments where I do that, but this video is helping me out. it put it all in a new prospective. when you were talking about how some creators just give up on the dream. Im literally at that point. and dont want to be.

    🌟 I was lying on my armchair and I felt the urge to get up and write. You have a huge talent. I been searching for ages videos on how to talk while vlogging, and all I could find was tips for the "technical side of it", then by chance I stumbled open one of your video on what to actually say, the internal dialogue etc. I immediately thought you are so talented and able to explain yourself well. even the squeezing lemon under the growth thing, wonderful. As I tip: make more content on how to vlog - how to talk on camera : but like inside the mind, how to find ideas, how to jump from a point to another mentally to keep the dialogue flowing .... there is no good content about that in the whole youtube

    This is a really well done video. I'm not very vocal about my mental health and really battle with it between the days I stream or between the days I get work done, or edit or anything that involves working on a hobby. I do agree with everything you said here. And sometimes I have to remind myself about a lot of these things. And most of the time when I'm having a mental struggle they aren't really my thoughts. So hearing this through your video definitely gave me a sigh of relief and was comforting really. Started something new and being somewhat uncomfortable just means your slightly unsure on what your doing, because it might be something you've never done before. I always hear people say, "Oh I could never draw that, " when looking at me Art. I don't think there is anything special about my art, but that mentality is what is stopping people from trying. And a lot of times that same mentality I try to tell people to not have, I have that with streaming. I try my best to never show it fully when I'm live, but also vocal if something is bugging me. I like the idea of a stream being a distractions from IRL, cus in some ways its my own distractions. But whenever I'm done with the week of streaming, I have to go through a few days of Self doubt & ideas of never being "Enough". So all in all thankyou for this :D ( I am rambling now XD) Also I think your doing extremely well for as long as you've done it!!

    This felt like a bestie sitting down to help talk through issues in a calm, caring, yet to the point manner. First time watching content about small streamer advise that didn't leave me thinking I need to be a content machine to succeed. I have two hurdles for streaming and content creating, my job and being consistent. The shifts I work change constantly, some times I work 5 days a week on lates, then maybe I'll do 4 days on earlies, making any kind of schedule tough. Consistency is something that just falls flat on me. The way my brain is, with its various and wonderful quirks, means I have recently learnt to take a different view of consistency. I like to be consistently inconsistent. By this I don't mean constantly saying I'll stream and then cancelling, but more I have no set schedule and will try to give a days notice (if possible) when I know I'm going to be able to stream. It also means that I create content for tiktok as and when I'm able to, rather than on a timeline that is detrimental to my mental health. This gives me so much freedom and puts less pressure on me. This won't work for every one but for me my goal really isn't growth and it's definitely been over a month since I last got a new follower, but the people who turn up and support as well as join in on my streams gives me all the warm fuzzies I could ever need. I've accepted at this stage of my content journey I won't go viral and be the next up and coming star, which is okay. I'm just trying to make my content creation process functional and maintainable for me, because at the end of the day if I approach this in a way that makes me stop enjoying the creation process then I'll end up not wanting to create. Sorry for long info dump type response. Hope you're having a great day and thank you for making this video.

    The thing I struggle with is my voice. I've always had a fairly deep voice for a Wan and it was never setting I was that self conscious about before but I hate the way I sound on recordings. I tried to sit down and practice talking while I was playing a game and set up a recording device just so I could look back on it. I stumbled through because the knowledge that I was recording combined with not being alone in the house made me feel really anxious about how I sounded and I stopped halfway to play back the recording and hated what I heard, so I stopped.
    I made sure to do something productive by working on my channel graphics instead. I get so nervous about my voice every time I think about recording so it's hard to motivate myself to do it.

    This was a great video and while I'm not a streamer and only do UA-cam videos I do recognize a few of those patterns with my own journey so far. I did a video every day for several months, and have recently hit a wall with all kinds of other things catching up with me. While I have not completely stopped I have certainly slowed down. The other huge danger I see is certainly the tendency to compare myself and my channel's growth to that of other creators who are doing things similar to myself. It is super toxic but very hard to fully leave behind and I am still very much struggling with it. That all being said, I believe just being reminded of all these pitfalls and forced to take a hard look at myself here will help, so thank you!

      You're super welcome Raf!! I feel you for sure, the comparison thing for me is one of my biggest pitfalls as well. It's always lurking and ready to take over my brain 😩
      I think the experiments of streaming (or posting youtube videos) every day for a month can give you some really awesome insight and data, though, that can help you build the best and most sustainable schedule!

      @RafBlutaxt 2 роки тому

      @@HeyShadyLady For a while the video every day was also just a tool to deal with my mental health, a bit of structure imposed on my chaotic life. Now that real world chaos has returned with the plague slowly receding it is getting much harder to hold to any form of schedule for me. On the other hand with me mostly talking about books the schedule kinda makes itself, depending on how much reading I get done. Still, the comparison thing is a hard one, especially in small communities because it automatically leads to the question of why other creators get way more collabs and the likes and then questioning my ability to network and that really big one of whether other community members just really don't like me and that way lies utter madness and despair.
