That was me! I've been a big Allen Toussaint fan for years and I had the time of my life that night (as you can see haha) - I was also eccied oot ma nut
I love this song and the story behind his writing of this song. January 2022, New Orleans voted to name "Allen Toussaint Blvd" in his honor. Like Mr Toussaint, it is one of the most beautiful streets that runs near the southern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, LA. Thank You to Mr Toussaint, for all the music and joy you brought into this world. May your music and legacy live on for generations. 🎹 💕 🎶
Brilliant - it's amazing how you completely miss these geniuses. 'Working down a coalmine' has always been a favourite but didn't realise it's part of a whole host of songs written by a master. Since the programme ended tonight I've just spent a fabulous 2 - 3 hours watching anything to do with Allen Toussaint. Thanks to Hugh Laurie/BBC for highlighting.
Same here. Just discovered this guy while watching James Dean Bradfield in a Songwriters Circle episode. He was watching James perform the song Faster and one shot of him showed his face that said he was in awe of the lyric of that song. Music spans all generations 🤘🤘🎧🎶❤️❤️❤️🎵🎼🎼
Wow, oh WOW! Had never heard of Allen Toussiant, what a talent! Glad I searched for the songwriter of the tune made famous by Glen Campbell. Now I’m searching for more tunes by Allen 😊
There is an excellent show on public radio called American Routes. They did an excellent tribute show when Allen Toussaint passed. I highly recommend it!!
Before now, I thought this was originally by Glenn Campbell, but a comment on you tube led me to this. I really like it and will listen to some more Allen Toussaint songs.
I may be wrong, but it seemed like Mr.Toussaint started off with a "sadder" rendition of his song (see other versions on the Internet), sensed the people in the audience didn't like that, and switched misplaying into an upbeat version of the song...What incredible genius!
Highly doubt he sensed the audience didn't like it and switched to playing it a different way. He would have planned that switch and probably rehearsed it a dozen times.
I know that British people are reserved, but jeez! You have one of the most talented musicians from western music's most unique city and, I don't know, they didn't seem to get into it that much. Just quietly staring like they don't know who he is. Obviously Jools knows what's up.
Props to the guy sat behind him absolutely loving every second of this performance.
you would never have thought it looking at him xD just goes to show, even a stiff collared chap can love any type of music
I would react the same way, in an sublime act there's the oportunity to express yourself and maybe learn something or even find love. Props 2.
@@benjamingarciataracido4540 damn straight :D

One of the best live performers I’ve ever seen - in person or on UA-cam. His control of the keys is phenomenal

He also wrote Sneaking Sally Through The Alley. Robert Palmer had a hit with that one.
This brings me joy
That is such a beautiful performance. Magical.
What an experience it would have been to be sitting there watching a genius at work.
Wow, I like the tempo change. It gives a ragtime feel to the song! RIP Mr. Toussaint.
When you can't be more proud to be southern.
I love this song❤
Un autre très très grand Allen avec un super morceau
Thank you Mr laurie and Holland for sharing the magic of this man.
Wow, well done.
Playing a busy piano piece and singing at the same time.
Not easy.
Awesome!!! Is sound so pristine and cheerful!!!

I've longed to learn the piano - wow, just wow
AMAZING!!!
Awesome, I didn't know this song was so popular in the UK.

@@teh_hunterer haha yeah, clearly a nod to the more upbeat glen campbell cover
No, he started with his original version and them switched to Glen Campbell's cover version that was a major hit.
RIH Mr. Toussaint ❤️🔥⚜️⚜️⚜️
Wish I knew who the two people who disliked this video were so I could punch them in the face.
I signed in just to agree with you on this one... thank you!
Rest In Peace Mr. Allen Toussaint
RIP!

Okay, I just noticed the one guy who is getting into this. Bravo!
Parabéns Bravo
Glen Camp[bell did a good job also, but make no mistake Allen Toussaint is the original!
Those dang Nevel Brotheres!!let's do it!!
💯♨💯
Ray Charles meets Fats Domino. A great loss.
Was it Glen Campbell who covered this way back when? This performance blows the country version right off the map.
No mention by the BBC uploader of the date of this performance?
24th October 2008
My father ignored me
The proper version of the song, no offence to Glen Campbell, but his cover was too pop sounding and doesn't capture the feeling of the original
Nice, but it it became Glen Campbell's song for the next thirty years
I don't think you understand how royalties work
The number of hit songs Allen Toussaint wrote that other people recorded is probably beyond your comprehension.
