The trick is to only use one arm (your weak side) to hold the bricks. That gives you both legs and your strong arm to pull to the surface. Keep trying, you'll definitely get it with some practice. Good U/W drill.
Other U/W drills you might like to try...
"Bag Boys" put three bricks on the bottom at the deep end, laying flat and parallel to each other like an = sign. Now LEAP FROG them over each other, back one goes to the front, and repeat... With practice you can get to the midway point of a 25 yd pool on a single breath hold, go up get some and complete the leap frogging to the far end.
"Brick Drag" put up to 6 bricks (60 lbs.) in a heavy duty milk crate, with about a 5 to 6 foot rope tied to the crate. Drag the bricks across the length of the pool. It can be done without fins, maybe up to 30 or 40 lbs... but it's a good drill with fins to work on ability to use them to their max. I posted a video of a Brick Drag on my channel if you'd like to see it in action.
Treading water holding brick(s) overhead and then sculling. With or without fins, start with a single brick. Hold it out of the water over your head while you're treading (for 1 minute), then switch to holding it between your legs and sculling (arms outward swinging them laterally under the water, with your hands angled to give lift as they move backwards and forwards) again (for 1 minute). Typically we do this drill for 6 minutes total time 3 minutes over head, 3 minutes sculling, switching every minute. 10 lbs. for no fins, 20 lbs. with fins, and 30 lbs. if you just wanna be a BEAST that day.
ALWAYS SWIM WITH A PARTNER, and if you're doing Underwaters (U/W), your partner should be ON THE SURFACE swimming above you as Safety. The Safety's job is to KEEP FOCUSED on the U/W swimmer, since these drills have the potential for a Shallow Water Blackout. It's not that common, but it happens, and if no one's there to pull you up, it can KILL you. So Buddy Team ALWAYS!!!!
I use these drills and many others to help train buddies prepping for BUD/S and USMC BRC (Basic Reconnaissance Course), and just for the fun of it. I'm retired from the Army.

Wow! Thank you for your service and thanks for all the drills and tips. They sound way harder then the kicking drills I do at swim practice. I might get around to making a video of some of your ideas.
So I was looking into the Navy SEALs and I saw at BUD/S they did different water evolutions. Are there any fun ones that would be interesting for me to try?

@@SpencerA I'm not sure what they do at BUD/S, most of the guys I train with are pre-...… going into one program or another. I can tell the few SEALS I've met are EXCELLENT swimmers, and very comfortable in the water. I am a pretty good swimmer, but a guy started swimming in the lane next to me one day... he keep going for a SOLID one hour swim at a pace I could only sprint at for short distances. After a few days of this humiliation I asked, and found he was a Retired Navy SEAL Commander. He has since become a close friend. I joke the Navy built him out of old torpedo parts.

I’m about to do a lifeguard course and I’ve been practicing the brick thing and it’s pretty hard so far

Nice! I'm a lifeguard as well and being a confident swimmer really helps with pretty much everything in the course

Can anyone give me tips if my ears hurt when I go down to retrieve the bricks? I’m a lifeguard in training and it’s my last test. The brick test. Any tips on how I should do it?

Of course! Not sure if you can see it in the video, but I have to equalize a lot during my videos. If you block your nose (pinch it) then try to blow air out of it then the air should be redirected to your ear drums. You should feel/ hear a popping-ish noise and feel some extra pressure on your ears. Depending on how much pain you can tolerate, you should have to do this every 3 to 5 feet or so. Hope this helps!

3 solutions 1. Deal with it not a great solution but it is a solution 2. Pretend to swallow to equalize pressure DO NOT OPEN YOUR MOUTH AMD SWALLOW just swallow with your mouth closed or 3. Pinch your nose and blow out hard to equalize pressure

You should grow your hair back out. Your longer hair looked really good underwater in your older videos.

@Classy Cthulhu I would but long hair is a pain to take care of and it gets in my eyes when in the pool
