  • Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Queen - they all lip synced! But they did it the right way. And demonstrated us the only proper way to lip sync.

You should probably learn what LIPSYNCING actually is before you make a video about it.
Lip syncing in the movie industry is dubbing or adding actors voice in post production if the audio on set is too bad or they need to ad lib some sentences.
Lip syncing in the music industry is just a fancy word for Playback. The singer mimes the song to a track played over the PA.
What Iron Maiden did was making fun of Playback on what I assume was Top Of The Pops UK. The first ones who demonstrated their hate of Playback was The Mamas & Papas back in the 60s.
The singer ate a banana on live television to show the viewers it was Playback.
What NIRVANA did was not lip syncing. They used Singback, when everything except for the vocals is Playback. So to make it seem live, the singers microphone is on and the original vocal track is removed from the master tape so they can sing live on top of the track. That`s very much still in use today as it is the best form for Playback around.
Playback was back then mostly hated by the artists themselves while the audience actually didn`t care that much. Many many performances on TV in the 70s and 80s even had the songs fading out live (as on the album) and left the bands end the song in some very awkward situations. It made them look pretty fake and stupid. Like puppets on a string slaving for Television.
Back in the day most Television music programs who had several bands and artists performing at their show used Playback or Singback. That`s because there was not enough time for change-overs and sound checks as the bands usually just played one song each. So because the viewers didn`t care if it was Playback or not, it made it much easier for the broadcasters to just make the artists mime to the songs. Television and radio was the only media platforms musicians had and being on Television in the early 80s was a big deal if a band would make it or not. People wanted to SEE the band. They had already heard them on radio and records but with these music programs, they were able to see them "play". THAT was much more important for the viewers than it being live in the studio. So most artists went along with it.
What we see today is a much more advanced version of Singback than before. Now, singers use autotuners and like with Paul Stanley, they have a special microphone or sound engineer equipment that mutes the pre recorded vocal tracks when he sings into the microphone. When he knows he can`t reach a note or something he stops singing and starts to mime, which cancels the microphone and activates the pre recorded vocal track.
That`s another level of fakery so I really hope it`s only the old bands that can`t seem to hang it up uses it.

Thank you for such a comprehensive comment. Yeah, it’s a lot of meanings for the lip-syncing, so yeah I was a little bit confused if I’m using it correctly. But looks like yeah I said exactly what I wanted to say. Lip-syncing is when a band mimicking to a playback. That’s exactly what I meant.
