Sorry I've been out the past couple of months everybody. I've been hard at work finishing up a new studio space which I'm excited to share with you all next time! In the meantime, let's say goodbye to the good ole' storage unit. It's been real. If you'd like to take your drumming further, you can book a one-on-one online lesson with me here: jeffrandalldrumming.com
Waddup man I play in a metal box too and was thinking of hanging some stuff for a bit of treatment cause I thought a storage unit would cause issues, but I may try your route by focusing on mixing do you have any channels on yt to recommend for mixing in a tincan ? Thanks @jeff Randall
@@karllathan731 I don’t have a particular video or channel that I can recommend. I just watched a bunch of different videos to get a sense of what the “industry standard” approach to mixing is. Hope that helps!
Congrats Jeff! Storage units will always have a special place in my heart. When I was in stationed in Oklahoma, the cops ousted me out of my garage due to neighbor complaints. The storage unit was out in the middle of a cow pasture/rodeo and I would play after I got off of my swing shift, around 1am. I would play until 3am or so. Needless to say, I would always get unique visitors since the sound would carry very far.
This is done in Pittsburgh with whole bands using these for practice spaces. Often with multiple bands practicing at the same time on full blast on the same floor. We shared ours with 2 other bands. I imagine it would be the same in Nashville with so many artists I just dont think you knew this was a thing and to look for one.
Hey Jeff, from the worst space out there you managed to produce the best drum lessons on UA-cam, can't wait to see your next videos from a real studio. Really excited for you. All the best of luck
I’ve always been impressed with the level of polish and overall aesthetic/sound you achieved in that space. Congrats on the move, I’m excited for this next chapter!
The goat, always sticking it to the basics. You taught me so much the last few years, Jeff. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be where I am today without your channel bro
Hey Jeff, I did this as well in Santa Ana, California in an outdoor unit for a year of woodshedding until I got in a band and we acquired a great rehearsal room. It was truly a great experience in life.
You deserve a new studio, mate! Thank you for all free content over the last 10 years. You help me to improve my drumming so much. The most quality drum lessons on youtube.
Sounds like a nice guy. Love his feel and drum sound. Never knew it was a storage unit. Jeff just knows how to groove and make anything work. Good luck with the next chapter. Keep that open big sound
5-51 sounds like my tinnitus,So glad your on the up ,I’ve watched you work so hard over the years, you’ve also helped me a great deal in my drumming journey ) Thankyou
I appreciate your dedication and all your videos, totally worth it. You are one of the very few you do this with total modesty, and one of the very few who make it fun and interesting to watch and learn.
Gonna miss seeing you in this spot. I'm fortunate enough to find a storage unit spot in Nashville that encourages bands & musicians to practice. Thankful for the little space to rehearse.
I commend you, Jeff, and have gotten shed loads (pardon the pun) from your blogs. I hope that your new venture gives you the freedom and opportunities to broaden your horizons. Best of luck mate, you're a champion 🏆
Being in a storage unit myself, I feel the frustration! Haha. But we’re all still thankful to have a place we can drum in and call “the shed.” You’ve stuck it out long enough! Enjoy the new place😊 Thanks for all the storage unit advice over the years!
MY FIRST VIDEO FROM YOU....and subbed. This was fun! I am a drummer with no space to play my drums. They usually sit in storage, a 5x5 unit but recently I have been I given opportunities to play in jazz clubs and other venues so it really helps!
this place is in my opinion a part of your "brand". It´s crazy to think that it is basically a storage unit, because every time I watch your videos it feels like you are in space. Keep up your brand, my man!
Hi, Jeff. Three years ago, I saw your "Getting Great Drum Recordings On A Budget" video. I found your page while looking for proof of concept on the storage unit drum studio. At the time, my living situation was slated to change after a break up (townhouse with a basement to a one bedroom apartment) and I needed to find a space to practice drums. After seeing your video, I lucked out finding a storage facility with management sympathetic to my intentions. Reserved a 10'x15' with a block wall in the back of the unit, six feet from a power outlet in the hall, on the same level with a bathroom that site management gave me coded access to, and 24 hour access to the facility for an extra $5 a month. Framed out over the two sheet metal walls and shimmed to prevent vibration. Three years later, I still practice there and teach online one night a week (hi-speed mobile hot-spot for connectivity.) So, thanks for the inspiration, bro. Still use an AT-2020 as my overhead 😅
You know man your videos to me have always looked very honest but also professional. Seeing how you made them is really cool, and makes me respect you more! Congrats on the move
congratulations on your move! I've been so blessed by your videos. It's been wonderful learning the basics through your videos. I appreciate all the work you've put into doing it. It's definitely a labor of love. Best of luck to you!!!
You should check out that one knob waves plugin. It's called clarity or something. It completely gets rid of those background noises. Even though you're leaving the space, it can really save a recording and is helpful in a lot of situations
I'm so hyped for the new place. Watching you make the best out of this place really inspired me when I had to move in a flat, so I can continue to play drums even if it's in a cold lightless garage. But this week-end, I'm moving my drums to my girlfriend's parents house, and I'll be able to play as hard as I want again !
Great recap of your journey Jeff. Very inspirational. Greatness overcomes barriers. Excited to see what's next. Love your channel, your playing and your story.
Very cool video! Appreciate you sharing the annoying bits too! I’m an apartment drummer with occasional access to loud drums, and it can be a challenge to get all drum practise I need without spending all my time arguing with my neighbours. Congratulations to you for making that storage unit work for you for so long! You really made it works for you, I’m very impressed by the look and sound you managed to achieve there.
Hi Jeff, so happy to hear that you have a new space. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are my fave youtube drum instructor. Love all your videos! Please continue doing what you do. Looking forward for your upcoming contents! 🔥
Hi Jeff, this answer about Yamaha giveaway seems "copy-paste" on almost every comment, Your UA-cam account has maybe been attacked ? This doesn't look normal.
Congrats on your new space! I shared a larger storage unit with another drummer in L.A. back in the early ‘90s. Same situation, it wasn’t really allowed, but we got away with it, and management looked the other way. And yes, there were a lot of distractions! Can totally relate, ha ha!
Jeff Storage Randall is getting upgraded to Jeff Studio Randall! Congrats mate ;) My first room was a moist garage with no heating and no electricity. I almost grew a batch of mushrooms inside my kick, for real - it became fuzzy in there, I almost lost that drum shell. But you gotta start somewhere, you gotta learn somehow - that's all part of the journey. Super happy for you, Jeff!
I had a spot in a storage unit and it was a 24/7 access the owner was totally cool and just said after 5 no problem and weekends were fine. The whole band played there it was super loud and inside we hung carpet on the walls and floor problem solved and there was an open roof which gave a cool reverb effect because the spot was huge. Great times in the 90's Denver scene we had some great times in our spot, no complaints, thieves, cops, or other bands to try and drown out in a typical monthly rehearsal studio.
Looking for demos of Randall guitar amps, found this absolute beast of a drummer (you)! There's a lot to be said for suffering for your art. Whether having to play in a storage unit, a moldy basement, on shit gear, etc etc etc. Best of luck to you!
Kudos Jeff! I've followed your content for a few years now and just love it. How you approach the kit, the music, the beat --- you've got it! Thank you for sharing your content also. It's inspiring. I love seeing the light and energy in your expression and eyes, you clearly love what you do. And, yes, it is hard work but the rewards are coming. Keep drumming your heart out?! Al
Right on Jeff! I for one will be sad to see that place go, it always had such a recognisable vibe! Excited to see your new place and see everything set up 💪🏻
wow well done. You're really driven to be working around these constraints. most of all that ac time schedule... keep the heart in it and good luck in your new place!
I don’t know what it’s like to drum in a storage unit but I do know what it’s like to drum at American One Productions Rehearsal Studios in Woodland Park New Jersey. Absolutely amazing! All the gear is pristine🏆🥁👏🏻
Only recently found your channel and I’ve come to really like it. Great practical advice for playing, practicing, and growing on the instrument. Thanks for all your work… and best of luck in the new space. Looking forward to seeing it.
Hey Jeff, always loved your videos, glad you did a rundown on your rehearsal spot. I too used a storage unit for rehearsal for a couple years, not fun but I was just more than thankful to have somewhere to practice. I know the feeling of moving from a storage unit to a real rehearsal spot, but I cant imagine the feeling after doing it for 10 years. Excited for what you got planned
Awesome job dude, don’t play English music, more regional Mexican music, but music is music! Had some guys up in Madison Wisconsin practice in storage units too, remodeled everything too, drywall, painted it, and electricity. Except in the winter, it’s get cold and you know had to have my mom come out and make us coffee lol.
Congrats! Great things come to those who wait. The Jeffersons was a a favorite series their theme song Move on up alone says it. I'm sure we'll be impressed 😎 Stayin tuned. Best wishes!
I was in a storage shed band in college. Our drummer played out of his apartment until his duplex neighbor got pregnant. He asked the owner of the local storage shed if he could set up shop there, and the guy actually put in an extension cord to the unit. Cool. When the owner sold the business to a larger company, they adjusted the terms to where we had to get the largest size of the air conditioned units. The price kind of sucked, but it was at least spacious and air conditioned (coastal Georgia).
Those black sheets really did make your space seem much larger. Once you took them down I was like "Oh damn, that metal door is literally right in front of his face".
