    Good morning from New Zealand. For the binding on the sleeve, I now join right side of binding to wrong side of sleeve. Stitch, turn, and pin. You are then stitching from the outside which is more accurate and anything that may go off piste is on the wrong side. Regards, Heather

      I do the same. Attach to the back and fold over to the front and stitch down so it always looks good from the right side. I also made my own 2" binding with my little $6 bias binding tool which gave me 1/2" binding and I didn't need to trim any fabric. I also did the diagonal quilt binding technique to join rather than sew together first and hope that it fits!
      My pockets fit each other perfectly. It is a new pattern so perhaps they have fixed any past errors?

    I used to sew all my husband's and kids clothes but haven't had a sewing machine for 25 years. I found a 1967 Singer for $50 and picked up Simplicity 8910. I made the jumper style with the long skirt out of light weight gray checked linen. It was the perfect toe in the water. I love this pattern and will make it again. as an aside, I'm not the same size I was 25 years ago and should have checked measurements, so the jumper has a 3 inch addition in the sides of the bodice and I had to adjust the pleats. lol.

      Congratulations! Also the sizes on patterns changed at some point. So don't feel bad, also the sizes of patterns have absolutely nothing to do with the sizes marked on finished garments. But we learn and I'm glad you enjoyed it😊

    I decided to try getting my measurement and sorting out what pattern size to cut out. Well, what a surprise. Now I’m a bigger size again, I’m going with the finished garment size with ease if I need it for comfort. You have hips I have about 4 inches bigger hips the waist. Discouraging so I’m getting out and walking. I love how your garment s look on you and that makes sewing fun. Love your style.

      I know the frustration... thankfully the only thing you really need to worry about fitting on this pattern is ther bust measurement because everything else is really loose. Enjoy your walk. 😊

    I have just cut out the short puff sleeve version of the pattern this morning so your video and this is my first try at it, so your tips are going to be very useful to me. I love the versatility of this design with the possibilities of making multi seasonal versions. The long sleeve dress is perfect for spring and autumn in a heavier cotton like yours and then there's the beach dress option and the short sleeves for a dressier summer event. Like you I am planning to make several!

    Hi Marie I liked this dress on you and I had the pattern so I made it in a lighter cotton the short , sleeveless version. I was thinking how easy and comfortable it would be. When I put it on i didn’t like it because the pleats make it stick out right on top of my butt😂 it’s to short and not drapery enough so back to the drawing board! I always learn a lot even when it’s a fail. Should have made the longer version 💕

  • @lindak8664
    @lindak8664 Рік тому

    That is also my go to getting stuff done summer dress pattern. I think i’ve made 7 of them. When one dies i make another one. I actually bought a second copy of the pattern, just in case. I prefer the sleeveless version for our aussie summers, but i did lengthen the long sleeves on one to reach full length and made one from french terry. It worked out fine even in the knit. I wish i’d thought to lengthen the dress skirt though. They’re somewhat short on me.
    I feel vindicated now that i’ve seen your pocket was odd too. I have a vague recollection that i had a problem at the waist too. But i fixed it a long time ago.
    That fabric you chose is very pretty. The heavier weight one seems to work nicely, it’s such a forgiving pattern!
    I also thought i was hearing the storm through the video until i took my headphones off and discovered we were having a massive storm 😂
    Got no doggo to run to me to save her anymore though 🥺

    • @CeciliaL2011
      @CeciliaL2011 8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Mary! My machine is a Meister by Meisterwerk. Late 40's vintage. It was my grandmother's and I also have fond memories of old machines 😊

    Just discovered your channel yesterday and this is the second video I have watched. I was just wondering - I noticed in the first video you used stay tape instead of stay stitching. In this one you stay stitched. Is there a fabric type, pattern type that determines which method you use? Fabric weight? Thank you!

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  2 роки тому +2

      I'm afraid I don't really have a simple answer. It's more of a judgment call on each garment. I would say that in general I will be more inclined to use the tape if the fabric is more delicate or I feel it's more in danger of stretching. If it is something that is very sturdy like the cotton canvas that I used for this dress, I'm not worried about it so I did Stay Stitch, but my method of choice is to use the tape. Thank you for watching!

    Thank you for sharring this dress pattern. I have been looking at this one for a while. Also, What king of tool do you use to make the holes on you darts, pleats, etc. That is a much easier way of marking your darts, etc., without getting out the tracing paper and wheel.

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Sandy the tool is actually a leather punch I bought mine on Amazon. If you do a search on screw-type leather hole punch, you can probably find one. Thanks for watching 😊

    Hiya i am from the uk , i really love your dress , you look great in it .,thank you for making this very comprehensive video it has been very useful. On a dress similar to this we would some time make a deep facing on the neckline . As you have made this dress many time, to make it less bulky do you think a main fabric face would work here ? Thank you for reading my comment. I hope this finds you well , blessings Maria 😊

      Hello there, I looked at the little dress that I have, and the only problem with the facing is that the shoulder same is only about an inch wide once it is made up and it's so that's very narrow for a facing. But honestly anything is possible and you want to give it a try that would be up to you. I think that doing some kind of a bias tape binding is the easiest for me.

    I just found your channel and subscribed. I really enjoyed your video and wondered if you made the white blouse you were wearing as you put the hem in your dress. If so, do you have the pattern information? I will go through your videos to see if you have one on that blouse. Your farm is beautiful!

    The directions show cutting pattern pieces on fabric folded right sides together, (albeit special cutting notes with a star). I see you are cutting on fabric with wrong sides together. May I know the advantage of your method. I'm not a veteran sewist and I have many questions. It is a very expensive venture and I want to make sure I don't waste materials. Thank you for your wonderful videos and for sharing your experience. xo

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  2 роки тому +2

      So, in general, for patterns where you are cutting out 2 of each piece (a right side and a left side) or symmetrical pieces that are cut on a fold, it does not matter if your fabric is laying right sides together or wrong sides together. Ther only times I can think of where you need to be concerned is where you have asymmetrical designs, or are matching fabric patterns. I hope this helps.

    I am thrilled to have found My Bucolic Life videos. Your teaching skills and witty humor sporadically interspersed are so appreciated. I bought the Simplicity pattern 8910. Is there any way to raise up the vee neckline; it is way too low for comfort. Not suitable for Sunday Mass! I’m holding up laying the home dec fabric I purchased until I can make this adjustment. Any advice, Marie?

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  Рік тому +1

      I've been trying to figure out how to answer your question without being able to show it to you. This pattern does not have a facing so you really only need to change that front bodice piece. If you've already cut it out what I would do is tape another piece of paper to the pattern and then at the very center front draw a DOT where you would feel comfortable with the bottom of the v. Then add about a half inch to that and draw another Dot. Then connect that dot to the shoulder point and you have a new neckline. I hope you're able to get it made up and wear it to mass soon. Good luck!

    I've made my bodice but the shoulders are too narrow. How can I adjust them. Otherwise, it went pretty smoothly and it's all together.

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  Місяць тому

      There is a very small amount of fabric at the shoulder. Unfortunately the best way to make more frabric up there is to cut out another bodice front and back piece with the adjustment made at that point.

      Hi! The neckline is very comfortable and secure. I have made this pattern for my mother too and she loves it, so I should hope you wouldn't have a problem. Thanks for watching!

    • @sandraobrien8705
      @sandraobrien8705 2 роки тому +1

      I think you could bring the neckline further in i.e. not cut it as wide and deep. I would probably do that but I don't know if it would affect the binding finish.

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  2 роки тому +3

      @@sandraobrien8705 Since the binding is just a simple bias strip it should be fine. And part of the fun of sewing is that you can tailor things and alter patterns to fit exactly what you want. So if you don't feel comfortable with a neckline that shape by all means bring it in :)

      I got mine on amazon, or they have them on ebay or leather working sites. Look up screw leather hole punch or automatic leather hole punch. Something like that. In general about $10 and have several sized tips.

    • @mybucoliclife

      I guess so... but since that has a stretch to it, and the pattern is written for woven fabric, pay attention to making sure you have all your structural seams reinforced. Like how I did on the knit dress I posted last week. Can't hurt to try :)
