I suspect that just like mountain goats climb mountains to obtain much needed salt found on the mountain sides Orcas probably seek specific nutrients they do not ingest elsewhere. Truly amazing.
Every time my dad made liver and bacon in the saucepan, my dalmatian dog used to howl at the door for ages until he could get some. So, I understand how orca’s love liver.

I think they are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. If we could only speak their language maybe we would discover how intelligent they truly are.
The craziest thing is that for each large prey (even for each variety of a shark), the Orcas always go for specific body parts and leave the rest, and they go for different body parts for different spicies, they're so good at hunting that they can afford to be that peaky.
Orcas are very intelligent mammals. I think they have figured out, that shark livers are very nutritious and supply the Orcas with what they need. The Shark livers probably taste pretty good to the Orcas. The sad fact is, that Great White Sharks are critically threatened and really need to be left alone - by Orcas AND by humans.
I rather have an ocean full of orcas than one filled with great whites! Orcas don't kill humans unless you kidnap them when they are very young, imprison them in a glorified swimming pool, force them to do tricks all day, and tease them with tiny snacks! As long as you don't do _THAT,_ wild orcas are perfectly safe around humans. Just dont hand feed them, they may comfuse your arm with the fish! (Took me 45 mins to type this with only 1 arm. 😂).
They know the liver is most nutritious. They remember that. They communicate that to others in their groups using distinct sound patterns. So they can teach to others. Amazing creatures.
They are so smart to even understand that we humans are superior to them with weapons , ships and such. That's why they Orcas NEVER attack us but sharks on the other hand they attack humans whenever they can.
@@cksammi As someone genuinely fearful of sharks after seeing an attack as a kid, I've done my fair share of research on them. It's actually very rare for them to attack compared to what they could. Chances are if you swim in open waters or even the beach, you've had sharks swim right by you without even knowing they were there.
@@cksammino.. they actually do not attack humans whenever they can. In fact, sharks really don't attack humans anywhere near as much as the news and UA-cam would have you think.
they've been doing the same thing to sting rays off the coast of New Zealand for YERARS now, it's actually shown in part at the end of the video when the orca tail-whacks the ray. They knock them out like then take the liver. You think it's hard for a huge orca to extract a great white liver? Imagine them doing it to something as small as a sting ray and STILL only taking the liver. The liver is the most nutrient rich part of the animal, it makes sense for them. The real question is why don't they eat the rest? Maybe they can't digest it very well or have trouble getting enough real meat out of it, nobody really knows. But they definitely like liver, and scientists have known this for a looong time. The real crazy part is, since the whales are doing it off the coast of South Africa (where most of the awesome videos of great whites breaching the water for seals come from) the great whites have essentially left the coast, from what I hear. As soon as the killer whales start to attack the white sharks, the sharks abandon the area. They're worried about it happening in New Zealand now too, since white sharks are an essential part of the ecosystem. Funny, how it seems once an animal becomes smart enough to screw up it environment (yet not smart enough to save it) they immediately go for it. Every organism is just trying to survive out there. We call it human nature to outspend the earths resources, as if every other animal is somehow more in tune than us with conservation. Really, we're just better at it, every animal will take more than they need when given the chance. Thats why predators are so important in nature, if it weren't for things like wolves we'd have things like deer WAY overpopulated and they'd destroy the grazing and eventually go extinct by destroying their own habitat. If you want to see exactly how that works, watch any of the several documentaries on what happened when they reintroduced wolves to Yellowstone. Every single part of the environment improved. It's not human nature, it's just nature. What sets us apart is we can see the bigger picture (we're still screwing it up though) so I'd argue that real HUMAN nature, is to try to keep the environment steady so we can continue to have civilization. It wasn't until about 10,000 years ago when the climate became stable enough to support farming and therefore cities. for 30,000 years before that, 3/4 of our existence as a species, we were essentially cave men. We got a break in the weather and ran with it. Now, we're speeding up the rate of change so fast that we are now in another extinction event, this time greater than the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. As is RIGHT NOW, we've lost more than 70% of biodiversity on the planet. The even that killed the dinosaurs killed about 76%. And it's all happened since the early 1900's more specifically after WW2. So in 1-2 human lifetimes, we've caused just as much or more damage than the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs. And guess what? Whales AND sharks have been acting erratically since it all started. Even though there are 50% less sharks in the water than during WW2, there are FAR more shark accidents. Especially with great whites off the western coast of Australia. Although that one is kind of like the rise of bike crashes, there's just simply more people there. The percentage hasn't gone up in that part of the world, only the amount of people. In other parts though, attacks are becoming more frequent, as if they're getting more desperate. We've got to start paying better attention to the world around us
You wrote a whole essay and I commend you for it. Why don't they eat the rest? It doesn't taste good. They don't want it. They are the apex predator of the sea. Apart from that. How do you establish dominance over another species? You kill it and put it on a stick for everyone else to see. That's what's happening. They're just asserting their dominance in the ocean.
The reason for this is that the liver of any animal is was has the most energy and contains the essential nutrients they need. While the Great White and other sharks are much more dangerous targets and are one of the few specieis capable of killing the orca, it is a matter of weighing the pros and cons. Either go for 100 rays or one shark
This is super interesting. The liver is a very rich source of some, particularly fat soluble, nutrients. Perhaps the Orca are using the shark livers to avoid a deficiency of something at a particular time of year? It is possible that their prey are deficient too, because of changes to food webs, e.g. due to over fishing or climate change? With some funding it would be possible to test these hypothesis. I'm a fish nutritionist, let's do it! Could be a fine natural example of an animal taking a nutritional supplement and a marker of disruption to oceanic life. Somewhat gruesome but certainly something very clever at play here.
You are on to something. Could be that they are only hunting for population control and since the liver is what's gonna give them the most energy to hunt more without filling up on a whole shark
yeah u dumbo ! ORCA can MAYBE challenge a smaller white shark - no chance vs a 23 Foot BIG WHITE SHARK...they can breath under water and have a higher bite force...ORCAS can'not - once the battle is under water , they are DONE FOR!!! And sharks go DEEP!
Sharks store fat in their liver, its a very large organ and rich in nutrition. Also its soft compared to the rest of the shark which is rubbery. Orcas do this to whales and pinnipeds to, they like liver best. Like most predators actually. Also, sharks without their fatty liver do not float but sink to the ocean floor.
Yup. Liver is the healthiest food on the planet. It's chock full of trace minerals, vitamins, and amino acids in a bioavailable form. They're doing it for their health.
The amount of power that orca produced , it literally smashed into that shark , and that didn’t slow it down one bit from straight launching into the air . What a beast
Those Orca are super smart. They employ a devastating maneuver called "Tonic Immobility" This is when the Orca charge into a Great White and flip them on their back. This induces a paralysis state where the Shark is now physically helpless as the Orca help themselves to their liver.
Orcas are the largest dolphin species, that makes them the most intelligent creature in the oceans. They are THE apex predator of the seas, not sharks. The literally hunt and kill great whites for sport.
Sharks are caught off guard because they didn't have any creature actively hunting them before the orcas. Now they are the prey. Orcas are heavier, bigger, stronger and more intelligent. That's why sharks run as soon as they sense Orcas.
no that's not the case, as a fact Sharks don't swim in packs but orcas do, sharks like the great white are solitude animals they don't know what family is and team work is so that makes them very vulnerable and huge disadvantage for the sharks as for orcas they are more equipped.evenso I would still not underestimate the great white shark.
Yeah its like anything else. They learned by taste that liver is an important food source, so they learned how to target it and passed on the skill. Same way mountain goats will go out of their way to find salt and pass on the location to their babies.
Prepare to be amazed, friends!

@@cksammino.. they actually do not attack humans whenever they can. In fact, sharks really don't attack humans anywhere near as much as the news and UA-cam would have you think.

Orca really said:ay dont fuck around with my humans, oohhh your a shark give me your liver now 💀🙏
they've been doing the same thing to sting rays off the coast of New Zealand for YERARS now, it's actually shown in part at the end of the video when the orca tail-whacks the ray. We've got to start paying better attention to the world around us
" ...paying attention to the world around us." Perhaps, it is too late now.
Ok.
I ain’t reading all that.
Well written and very informative. Thank you.
A nutritionist calling food a supplement 😂 A supplementary bit of liver lovely.
Just joking of course
You are on to something. Could be that they are only hunting for population control and since the liver is what's gonna give them the most energy to hunt more without filling up on a whole shark

Thank you I was looking for this answer. May I conclude that alcoholism could improve the floating capacity of sharks 😉? And humans 😝
Yup. Liver is the healthiest food on the planet. It's chock full of trace minerals, vitamins, and amino acids in a bioavailable form. They're doing it for their health.
